One thing I never noticed till recently:
In the Mustafar duel, Anakin attempts the same overhead leap that Obi-Wan used against Maul. Because of that, Obi-Wan anticipates it and counters Anakin, winning the duel.
Knowing that, when Kenobi says, “Don’t try it,” on Mustafar, to me it kinda reads as, “I know what you’re about to do. Don’t make me do this.”

Also, idk if its legends now or still cannon but apparently as Anakin was a padawan and still training he used to use training droids to replicate mauls body and practiced the exact same leap Obi Wan did to Maul in order to impress him. Thus him thinking on Mustafar it would work. But we all know you dont mess with the high ground🤷‍♂️

I mean Grievious has a "gimmick" of 4 sabers, because he is no Sith, not even a Force-user. He compensates the lack of Force powers by having 4 sabers.

Grieveous was an amazing warrior though. He was later turned into what we know him as in the movies, similar to what happened to vader. definitely not a jedi or a sith, but I loved the character none the less and loved all his scenes in the movies.
When I first seen him, I didn't realise he was basically a xenos cybrog, I thought he was a mech that was mimicking an organic lifeform with his raspy breathing. was quite puzzled by it tbh. didn't find out till later what he actually was, and this is when I started to like the character a whole lot more.

Local Man untill now I thought he was an old coughing Android with some time-withered organic parts lol I really liked that concept as well though. A walking undead Horror.
But tbf an alien cyborg makes more sense.

In the original Star Wars Animated Series Grievous was introduced as a supreme warrior capable of intimidating Jedi rendering their force abilities inert as the would lose focus to panic, while using hand to hand and lightsaber combat skill to break his enemies physical guard. Ultimately this would lead to the death of most jedi he faced off against.

Dave Filoni actually went even deeper with this very recently. He talked about how Maul's sole purpose in Palpatine's eyes was to kill Qui-gon. This sets up how Anakin did not have the right master for him. If Jinn had survived and trained Anakin, Anakin would have had a closer relationship with the Council and would have been better prepared for losing his mother and Padme. Palpatine's plan to convert Anakin would have been a failure, for Anakin would not be so angry and fearful about losing Shmi and Padme, leaving the temptation of immortality utterly useless, all coming together to make this one duel the most important in the history of the Galaxy.

    • @chrisk_nfl4120
      @chrisk_nfl4120 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

While I agree somewhat, I think Maul's purpose there was to make sure the Jedi couldn't help the people of the Naboo destroy the Trade Federations plans for Naboo. Qui-Gon Jinn was somewhat of a renegade and wasn't even on the council, as instead of going with what the council wanted, he'd follow the "Living Force." I think Jinn would've been a good master for Anakin, but Sidious' manipulation of Skywalker would've still happened, and I don't think Jinn would've changed anything about it (imo only). You have to remember that Anakin did tell Obi-Wan about his dreams and his mother, but truthfully there wasn't anything more he could've done.
Anakin's fall to the dark side was as much down to his own choices than his master's teachings; I think Obi-Wan had done a good job given the circumstances. The council distrusted Anakin because of the darkness he had and the lack of willingness to let those he was close to go

tbf, I don't hate the talking at the start of the Anakin vs Obi Wan fight, those characters had an established relationship so it makes sense that Obi Wan would try, in vain, to pull him back one last time before they fight. Qui-Gon and Obi Wan have almost no prior dealings with Maul, so the lack of pre-fight chat is appropriate in this case.

The Old Republic may not be canon but there's so much source material for them to create a story from where the expectations from fans is far less intense and they can go mental from a creative standpoint as long as they have a core vision and direction to follow.

“I find Kylos cross hilt a bit unnecessary.” He’s descended from a bloodline where not one but two of his relatives lost a hand in a lightsaber duel. The crossguard makes the most sense of any lightsaber modification in the cinematic universe.

Actually there is a reason for dooku's and kylo's lightsaber design. Dooku is supposed to be a master duelist and Christopher Lee actually requested the design to make it more practical. The reason why kylo has a cross saber is because his kyber crystal is damaged, thus needing an exhaust port to prevent it from exploding. Anyways that's all. Great video

2:59 using two single-bladed saber with a curved hilt is less nonsensical than a double-bladed one.
In combat, your mind tries to keep track of each blade separately, effectively doubling the number of possibilities. But the two blades are connected: by knowing the location of one, you are automatically aware of the location of the other. In actual practice, the double-bladed lightsaber is more limited than the traditional lightsaber. It can do more damage, but it is less precise. It requires longer, sweeping movements that don't transition well into a quick stab or thrust.
And then you have curved hilt sabers.
The use of curved hilts allowed for more precise movements as well as near-perfect flexibility when engaged in lightsaber-to-lightsaber combat. Curved hilts needed to be held more in the palm, farther away from the fingertips. The hilt's curvature also gave the wielder more power when delivering overhand strikes and would change the angle of the attacks by the merest fraction of a degree; this was usually just enough to confuse and disorient an unsuspecting opponent.
Some techniques were more difficult when using a curved hilt, but many others became far more effective.

What I personally love about the ladder half of this fight, namely after Qui-Gon is struck down. Is that it ultimately comes down to a duel between two refined apprentices. I feel Qui-Gon lost because he was older and couldn't keep up with Maul's tricky moves. Not necessarily because he was weaker, Maul just finessed him. Whereas after the fact, the fight has now become personal for Obi-Wan. And this is conveyed through how much more aggressive he becomes right out of the gate. This is an emotionally charged apprentice, who just witnessed his master suffer a deathly blow, and now not only has to face the man who killed him on his own immediately after, but now has to fulfill his duty as an apprentice. By not only surpassing his mentor, but also succeeding where he failed. A bit redundant sounding, but I think my point is sound. 😂

I'm honestly shocked at how many people fail to realize what went on when Obi-wan cut Maul in half.
It's clear that his jump would never have worked normally; Maul's senses were just too fine-tuned to be taken by surprise like that. He could have just held his blade straight out and let Obi-wan cut himself in half lengthwise on it.
When Obi-wan was looking so intently into Maul's eyes, he was momentarily scrambling his thoughts, as can be clearly deduced from Maul's baffled frown. Obi-wan then used this moment of confusion to get the jump on him.
It was a technique that dabbled in the dark side, done out of desperation and anguish over losing his master.

Honestly my favourite bit about this whole fight is how Qui-Gon is defeated, there no “Aha! I have you now!”, it’s just Maul seeing an opening an taking advantage of it, all over within a split second.
Even though the fight is filled with the typical flips and spins to make it look flashy like most Star Wars duels, that little moment of realism makes the whole thing feel somehow very grounded

Fun fact: this duel was Obi-Wans trial. To become a Jedi Knight, every Jedi must go through a trial. In legends (not sure if this is still canon…) Obi-Wan is the only known Jedi to not have a conventional Jedi Trial, and the council awarded him the rank of Jedi Knight after he defeated Maul. I guess Obi-Wan was just like “how many Sith Lords have you guys killed?” 😂

See, while this fight is mostly nothing short of incredible, the fact that Darth Maul just stands there and lets Obi-Wan jump over him to chop him in half kinda ruins the entire thing for me. It contradicts everything we've seen him do during the fight and it was a stunningly bad choice choreography-wise. • @FullFatVideos
      @FullFatVideos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +290

Schaffrillas Productions true, but I kind of like the idea that Maul’s arrogance is the reason - the fact he’s playing with his food and he’s so cocksure he’s won this thing - seeing Obi Wan begin to smile is the first moment where he’s like oh shit - what’s he doing- by the time he’s put his ego aside Obi Wan is behind him, slicing him in half. It also speaks to the biggest weakness in any sith- their arrogance and their overconfidence in their abilities

But Qui Gon loses, which means Anakin’s fate was to be lost in the Dark, not having a proper teacher to help him with his conflicts, and hence Anakin suffered and went through the stages of the dark side Yoda described to him. _He went through fear in the phantom menace, Anger in Attack of the Clones, Hate in Revenge of the Sith, and throughout the originals he Suffered_ until Luke finally brought him back to the light.

That very first duel holds a special place for me, Episode 4 Vader VS Kenobi. It's tense and gritty and there's an air to it, one that I don't think you can really get again nowadays. It's an air of mystery from before they fleshed everything out, the feeling that you're not getting the full story, just the last chapter of an old book. It didn't need to be super dramatic and flashy, it was two old soldiers in what might have been the last battle of a war already lost ages ago.

Greivous's spinning mechanic was used to scare the Jedi cutting off their connection to the force to almost always ensure his victory.
Kylo is some emo teen who knows nothing of the Sith and tried to make a lightsaber, cracked the crystal and made it all weird and fucked up. He had to install 2 exhaust pipes on the side and it gave the saber the crossguard look. Although it's never used because a saber would miss the guard and go through the hilt.

I like your exhaust theory. But I still believe that were living in a fucked up parallel universe where Disney made VII VIII XI and all the other universes are laughing on us

It's not a theory, those are actually canon.

The trouble is that these "explanations" are just bullshit added on after the fact. No idea if the General Grievous one is true or you made that up, but its dumb as fuck regardless. Why would some spinning blades make people lose their connection to the force. Creators just try to up the ante; what if we gave him four spinning lightsabers hurr durr. It's all just a bunch of gimmicky bullshit to try to make Star Wars new and exciting. 90% of the stuff added in the prequels, sequels, animated shows etc have just turned this franchise to shit. Shame really.

@@kian-rhysevans5576 Then why comment on a franchise you hate so much? You are clearly here to be a negative factor and to potentially cause a fight.

    Always loved this battle.
    - The music
    - Darth Maul’s skill and athleticism
-The pauses in between plasma barriers
-The way Obi-Wan comes in angry after Qui-Gon’s defeat.. classic
