For someone with a Kenobi pfp i thought you would have more sense.
      Prequels arent shit.
As a saga it isnt as good as the original but way better than the sequels.
Im not saying theyre perfect but they are not bad.
Only movie in the sequels i can say is shit is The Last Jedi.
      The rest are alright.

This duel plays out like a horror movie, and that's why I love it so much. Vader's towering presence is actually kind of terrifying when matched with the heavy breathing and his slow, methodical lightsaber swings, with the entire duel taking place inside of very dimly lit rooms with plenty of dark corners to hide in.
Other duels focus mostly on the spectacle, whereas this duel feels like a scene from Alien (1979) - the only differences being that the Xenomorph is wielding a lightsaber and is also dealing with extremely severe asthma problems.

Yes to your comment. The xenomorph and vader are both these very terrifying black shapes in the darkness, very tall, they both have a sort of hiss(vader has his breath while the alien just hisses), the futuristic mechanical environments, the way both characters can hide in the darkness, and the way they are just so physically imposing.

Olympic fencer, sword master, and coach to actors in the Lord of the Rings, The Mask of Zorro, Barry Lyndon (hand-picked by Stanley Kubrick, no less), The Princess Bride, Pirates of the Caribbean (the first one), Highlander and Die Another Day.
There so much that said in a TH-cam comment about this fight when you know that context. In short though: when you see Vader in this fight, truly you are watching a master at play.

  • @YNWALfC05
    @YNWALfC05 4 ปีที่แล้ว +751

I always noticed that when Luke escapes Vader on Bespin, all the admirals are thinking Vader is going to kill them like he has done to all those that failed him throughout the film. When he doesn't they must have been thinking wtf this guy has been murdering us all for losing that ship and when it has his main target on it he is just walks away, what gives.
This is where I think Vader started his journey back to being a Jedi and in the end saving his son, he is becoming merciful. Because Luke reminds him of what he once was and also what he was never able to do, which is resist the dark side even in his most desperate situation and facing death.
Another brilliant video you had me gripped throughout, even though I've watched the film a million times, the narration and description of the scene made me feel like I was watching it for the first time again! 👍

Admiral Piett was responsible for the sabotage of the Millennium Falcon, which has just now escaped, and is terrified that Vader will kill him; however, for the first time in the movie, Vader doesn't kill someone for a perceived failure, and never will again. In a way, his redemption is already begun.

Yeah I don't think admiral Piett felt sorry for Vader as much as he felt afraid he was going to end up like admiral Ozzel for failing Vader again. That wasn't sympathy, it was fear then relief. I doubt he ever knew the real reason why he was spared that day. Vader had just witnessed that same fear in the eyes of his son, done by his own hand. He got very lucky that day.

100% Anakin Skywalker trained in 5 different forms of lightsaber combat and trained with the greatest swordsmen that existed in the previous century. Luke got partial training in form 1 the learners form. At no point was Vader trying to kill Luke. And a part most people gloss over: he let Luke go. Moments earlier he was throwing chunks of space station at Luke, he could have easily caught him in mid air when he fell, then carried him back to the Carbonite chamber to freeze him.

This was a phenomenal video, and it just further shows how solid the writing was in the OT. I just wish more writers today would capitalize on the potential of what a parent-villain plot twist can provide for their story. It not only shakes the story up, but complicates things for the main character which is what a writer wants.
Will they follow down the same path as their villain parent? Is it inevitable? Should they pursue it to finally get the relationship they were devoid of for so long? Is everything they believed in wrong? How will their loved ones, or the rest of the world react to this?
    So many possibilities.

Great video. The one criticism I would have is Piett’s reaction. Context is important, so if one only looks at the shot that you edited in then sure, you could be convinced that Piett feels sorry for Vader. That said, the context is that Vader, only moments before, had asked if Piett had confirmed the Falcon’s sabotage, to which the Admiral responded affirmatively. The Falcon proceeds to go to lightspeed, making the officer’s incompetence as clear as day. Vader murdered his predecessor for a blunder not dissimilar to this, so Piett’s reaction is that of intense anxiety, knowing that the most likely next thing to happen is his immediate execution. Vader walks by, highlighting that unlike Ozzel’s death, he knows nothing will soothe the hole in heart, exacerbated by his failure, and so he walks on by

This is Star Wars perfection. The power and menace of Vader contrasted with the survivalist tactics of Luke, burdened with so much expectation and desperate desire to save Han and Leia, and the almighty plot twist ever conceived. It was brutal, it was dramatic, it was brilliantly shot and acted, with the right amount of symbolism behind each of the characters leading up to and beyond this moment.

Do you mean the one with Count Dooku, Anakin, Obi Wan and Yoda?
If so, that is the single worst lightsaber duel I have ever seen in my entire life -_-

@@willemmmmm No, the one from Empire when Luke fights the Vader spirit and cuts off its head and sees his own face. I think that's a really underated sabre fight that no one talks about enough.
The AOTC fight is enjoyable but it is easily the worst of the original 6.

This far more detailed, vulnerable, and subtle picture of Vader as a protective father changed the way I saw Vader and the end to this saga. On first viewing, Vader's invitation just seemed like an expected and somewhat dry plot device: the villain tries his best to turn the hero to the dark side. It had the same level of depth as Kylo asking Rey to join in him "ruling the galaxy" or Maul suddenly offering to Ashoka to join with him. The motivations are hard to grasp, and the villain only becomes more one-dimensional and despicable in the process. But Vader was no comic-book villain trying to turn over a hero, he's a father trying his best to save his son.
For all his life, Anakin has been played a pawn to Sidious. Unlike the idealist that Luke is, Vader knows a harsher reality where innocence does not survive. The only way that he's been able to survive is by sacrificing himself as a pawn to the emperor. It reminds me of the resigned horror with which Anakin kneels after killing Mace Windu in ROTS. Anakin's initial reaction isn't villainous satisfaction or triumph, but genuine horror as he asks himself with glazed, teary eyes "What have I done?" As he sits down defeated, he realizes his innocent past is fully dead, that he must forever commit his fate to Sidious if he wants to see himself and his loved ones survive. That little moment of ROTS solidifies the reality that Vader's tie to the emperor is a bitter, resigned, nihilistic, sorrowful loyalty. If you can't beat Sidious, join Sidious--that's not a truism, it's a tragic reality in Vader's world. In his view, Luke's turn to the dark side is indeed "his destiny" because no other course of action exists. The bereaved husband who already lost Padme once, now as a desperate father, will do anything for Luke's survival, even if it means forcing Luke down the same path to the dark side as he did. Like a mother pleading her son not to go to war, Vader's begs Luke not to foolishly face the emperor on his own.
Seeing Vader as a true father only makes his redemption better one film later. Nothing could have made Anakin prouder than seeing his own son prove him wrong, to show him that good still lived in him, that Anakin was not dead yet, that another way of life existed, and that Anakin did have the power himself to save the ones he loved without the manipulation of Sidious. Anakin indeed was the chosen one who restored balance to the Force, but he was only able to do so because of the faith that his son restored in him. As Vader takes off his helmet on the Death Star, he's not only happy to see his son with his own eyes before his life is unfairly ripped away--he's happy to know his son is freed from the oppressive shackles of evil and hate that he was controlled by all his life.

I agree. I never saw Vader as a menace on screen. Mind you I was born in 86 and watched the movies growing up, after the fact.
Maybe I needed to experience the movies first hand on the big screen. Maybe the prequels sullied my version of Vader?

Lord Darius maybe they did. Maybe giving vader a personality before he became vader ruined his character a bit.
Still though. I would be frightened if I genuinely saw vader. Even from miles away

The slow and smooth ignition of Vaders saber in contrast to Luke remains iconic and the shot of the silhouetted at the top of the stairs is one of the great shots in cinema history. And Earl's voice...masterful

2:32 What's interesting is that Yoda and Obi-Wan are entirely correct. Luke does NOTHING to save his friends. He actually puts them in extra danger because they have to turn around and save him instead. If Luke had remained on Dagobah, it probably would have been *better* for just about everyone. But Yoda, as you point out, is kind of bad at dealing with emotional arguments and can't manage anything more convincing than "sacrifice your friends," pretty much like he did with Anakin 25ish years before.
(As an aside, I think there's also a neat contrast with, of all things, Episode 9. Rey is depicted as being dedicated to her training to the point she's getting chewed out by Finn & Poe for never going on missions, and it seems like that isn't the first time they've had that argument. But then she goes on to display a bunch of new talents - justifying her choices, and showing that she's not repeating Luke's mistakes.)

I agree. Luke even apologised for it in Ep VI when Yoda was on his deathbed (That's the only moment I think the NPR radio show got wrong. In that, Luke was still arguing about how it was right to try to rescue his friends).
Although, to be honest, I still feel that in a way, Luke DID rescue them. I mean, if Vader wasn't preoccupied, he would have been there to escort the prisoners, and there's no way Lando and his men could have pulled guns on him and got away with it like they did with the Stormtroopers
