ARC Trooper -Halo to be fair tho, they basically kept the siege of mandalore off the books (meaning only the Jedi council knew about it, I don't even think palpatine realized or cared that it was happening) and that was because of the imminence of the situation. Remember palpatine was "captured" by grevious right before it all began. I also think to that end, if maul had been delivered to the Jedi council THEN palpatine would've sensed it and done something about it (because maul could've given them the missing pieces about sidious) but that never happened

My favorite part about this episode is just how well Maul's voice actor is able to get across the full range of emotion's he's going through. The tortured lab rat who realized what he was after he was discarded, all the while begging the other rats to listen to him about the scientist.

Yo, am I the only one who thinks filoni's work got weaker and weaker with time. Clone wars is peak star wars to me-legit takes the best part from all star wars content (when it is good itself-d squad). And season 7 was definitely a tremendous return to form, with the bad batch being fun and siege of mandalore being phenomenal (hot take to say the best of star wars?). While rebels was great, It missed the mark a lot more than TCW and just wasn't on the same level. And the mandalorian... yo, I'm hopeful for season 2 but for me season 1 was the most boring thing I've ever seen in star wars, just could not get into it. For me mandalorian < rebels < TCW < siege of mandalore (yh it deserves it's own place don't @ me). Like, am I the only one?
I also forgot resistance, or at time of writing the comment originally forgot filoni made it, but resistance is generally less than rebels (though I say better than mandalorian, first 2 epsidoes of season 2 hasn't changed that, but to watch ep 3.

Sam Witwer, the voice actor for Maul, confirmed that Maul actually had the better plan, was actually trying to stop Sidious and save the galaxy, and that Ahsoka should've joined him. You completely disregarded this by saying that Maul was just trying to kill Anakin without explaining the context of that. Maul wasn't trying to kill Anakin because that's the Sith way of doing things; he was trying to kill Anakin to stop Sidious and--more importantly--stop Vader from being born. Ahsoka asked Maul what he wanted with Anakin, and instead of lying to manipulate her, he tells the truth.

Yeah, this video seemed very much like the conclusion was reached long before the “debate” started. Like downplaying the fact that they used real actors to not only capture the physical character of Maul when he fights, but also to give it a sense of weight that makes the hits feel harder. That point is given as “it’s closer to live action” - seriously? I also don’t see why Maul not being able to fight in live action is anything to do with this, especially in the way it was said.
And comparing this fight to awkwardly going back onto the stage after a mic drop is just unfair, especially since while Maul vs Obi-Wan is a great scene, it’s far from a great *fight*.
      - in my opinion, anyway

    • @noahmeserve9165
      @noahmeserve9165 3 ปีที่แล้ว +116

Yes, Maul wanted to kill Anakin to stop Sidious, but Maul has always been obsessed with gaining power, especially after his return in Clone Wars. Ahsoka was still right, Maul wanted to take Sidious' place.

    • @georgiopapakonstantinou1580
      @georgiopapakonstantinou1580 3 ปีที่แล้ว +124

@@noahmeserve9165 @Noah Meserve I really don't think it was about gaining power here. He knows he, the jedi, all have lost except for Sidious. After being stripped away from his family, the choice of how to live, and then being cast aside, he want to take Sidious' most prized possession. like a dead man's hand. To ruin all of the work he has done for so long cultivating Anakin into the perfect Sith apprentice.
In the long run, perhaps but having lost almost everything I don't think he would have pursued power as Sidious has. He does not care of the extermination of the jedi, he purely cares about revenge on all of those that have crossed him.

I think both fights were homages to the canon time periods they were close to. The Maul and Kenobi fight almost represents the simpler, less drawn out combat that we first saw in A New Hope, whereas the Maul and Ahsoka was both an Homage the Kenobi and Anakin’s final duel as well as to the flashy cinematic and mythic combat of prequel movies.

Actually the Maul vs Kenobi fight is an homage to the qui-gon jinn vs Darth Maul fight in episode 1.
Kenobi starts out in his normal stance, but shifts to the form we see qui-gon jinn fight and die in before the batlle actually starts.
Baiting Maul into trying to defeat him with the same moves he used to kill qui-gon jinn all those years ago.

I love Duel of the Fates, it is amazing, and absolutely one of the best lightsaber duels ever, but the emotions during the Battle of the Heroes are just too much for me.
      For me, it's probably

      3. Maul vs. Ahsoka
      4. Maul vs. Obi-Wan (Twin Suns)

Their arrogance in that regard truly broke any chance of Anakin remaining a jedi. Not to mention that Anakin was slated to become a jedi councilar (negotiator) when the tales he had heard about as a slave on tatooine were about the jedi guardians. the Guardians are the heroes who go out and free slaves, fight to free planets from cruel governments, they're the foot soldiers. then there are the jedi shadows the ones that deal directly with the sith. a jedi guardian won't normally come across a sith unless they are on a battlefield. the shadows directly hunt the sith down. you've heard about sith assassins? well jedi shadows are the jedi equivalant.

The one thing I feel separates the two scenes of Maul vs Obi Wan and Maul vs Ahsoka is that, like the Avengers in the Infinity War film, Ahsoka truly does not understand what is at stake. She has an idea, and she's open to learning more, but her desire to trust her master keeps her from making the difficult choice. Maul is probably being his deceptive self, but he genuinely looks tired of the war, and like he's wanting to change. Ahsoka could probably change him. But it wasn't meant to be.
In the Maul vs Obi fight, Obi Wan knows the stakes. The reality of just how important the decisions they're making are to the future of the galaxy is fully revealed to him, and he would die to protect the last chance for hope in the galaxy. His fight is short because he decided that Maul need to die the moment he threatened Luke. Ahsoka isn't really fighting Maul with that goal. She's fighting to capture him.

That’s the thing that makes Maul’s story all the more tragic, when you think about it, I think that Ahsoka really could have changed Maul and made him a better person, it was only when Maul, for once in his entire life was mostly honest, and if not completely honest probably the most honest he has ever been in his entire life and when Maul told Ahsoka the truth about Anakin’s fate she refused to believe it. Had Maul not been honest on what he had planned to do, she likely would have joined him, and maybe even changed him to be a better person, Maul is truly one of the most tragic character in all of Star Wars if you think about it.

If I’m being completely honest, Season 7 was fairly by the books until The Siege of Mandalore made it interesting.
Bad batch was the standard Clone story we all grew to love since we got so attached to the clones like Rex as characters. And the Sisters arc helped reacquaint us with Ahsoka before her showdown with Maul.

I really like Star Wars: Clone Wars (2D series), but I'm glad The Clone Wars existed. If it weren't for The Clone Wars, we wouldn't see Darth Maul having a personality, and we wouldn't have an enjoyable character of the Prequel Era such as Ahsoka Tano. As much as I enjoyed General Grievous (from 2D series) kicking Jedi Booty, I must admit, Ahsoka vs Maul is a pretty cool fight.

The moment Maul realized he's not unique in his suffering really marked his downfall. Prior to dueling Obi-Wan=driven by pure hatred for the Jedi, after dueling Obi-Wan=seeking revenge. And this flows into Rebels as well, when he's noticeably less intense in a way unrelated to aging, and it's only after finding out Obi-Wan is alive did he rekindle just so slightly.

I just love the premise. Maul trying to make Ahsoka see Sidious' plan, knowing that it has all fallen into place, but not knowing that by then it is too late to stop it. Maul is being reasonable and honest, and though not altrustic, sincere even if it is just for his own interests. He is absolutely correct about Anakin, and they come so close to an agreement, but Ahsoka refuses to believe that her friend could fall so far. It gives a lot of weight to the Vader/Ahsoka fight in Rebels, and though I do not like Rebels, that fight is amazing, and certainly one that FFV should cover if they have not yet done so.

Easily the best fight. For me it is tied with obi wan v anakin in live action. So much is built up for a fight like Ahsoka v Maul. The acting was better then anything I have seen in Star Wars. The animation and choreography left my mouth open the whole time. While we don't get duel of the fates we get something that holds up to duel of fates pretty well. That make you so invested in the fight even though we know what already happens. They make Maul so much bigger of a character cause he and Ahsoka had a chance to prevent the downfall of the republic.

Really nice insight, I hadn’t thought about the parallel with TLJ. Also nice and really true conclusion: both Kylo and Maul act like they want to be something new and different, but they’re actually too consumed by the Dark Side, which, being a form of slavery of the soul, doesn’t really leave them the freedom to be something different from what they are: power obsessed monsters.
Plus, unlike Kylo and Vader, Maul didn’t even have the slight consolation of being the boss of an intergalactic empire: his life was just rage, fear, humiliation and suffering.

That quick cut to the Clone Wars movie that kickstarted the show really shows how far the animation has come. The beginning looks like a PS3 cutscene compared to what it is now

Vader vs Ahsoka in Rebels was by far my favorite. It carried so much emotional impact than any other lightsaber fight, including Kenobi vs Anakin on Mustafar. Vader is vicious and unrelenting and Ahsoka skillfully fights her former master successfully striking him and damaging his helmet. Then we get to see Anakin shine through momentarily and the affect on Ahsoka is heartbreaking.

I actually enjoy how weighted the characters feel when they were duelling. It gave a sense of how powerful the two combatants are and when ahsoka had to take a few breaths shows how much it’s taking her to keep up with maul. and the same with maul at the end he takes a few breaths, it shows how equally matched they are

They need more writers and creators on the movies that see Star Wars, as the story and characters, with the clarity you see them with.

I would put this above twin suns due to what Maul said at the end, that was unironically in my opinion the best line said in star wars, it was due to the voice acting, it was done really well and gave chills due to you knowing it is true.

The footwork in this fight sets it apart from everything else. Even when you're not looking at it, it adds power and weight to each stroke and parry.

I said from the second the duel started that it was visually going to be the best duel in any episode. It was so fluid and graceful. One wasn't a jedi, the other wasn't a sith...yet you can see how long they and trained.

This is easily my favourite arc in the entirety of star wars, the weight of the knowledge of everything else that is occuring in the universe at the time is exhilarating, yet sad, it really gets the imagination going. Hats off to the team who put it together!

The thing is, the atmosphere before the duel was pretty calm, yet slightly unnerving, like an inevitable storm was about to hit, and yeah, i guess thats the perfect atmosphere for the duel, as at the time, things are going alright, yet we know that its only a matter of time before suddenly everything goes loose and the entire fate of the galaxy is turned on its head, something this duel captures quite well

I think twin suns works better for a character moment but I always saw this fight as the last crescendo for the slick bombastic lightsaber fights of the prequels, and works just as effectively for me as a book end

No, his resume does not help him become the President of Lucasfilm one bit. He has little to no business experience and he wold probably be miserable in that position because he wouldn't be able make anything new.

  • @spinejackel

i love that they did motion capture for this fight cause it lets us see the physical weight behind how much maul outclasses ahsoka in battling skills, and how important that moment of rest she has after kicking him through a window shows how it’s taking all of her focus to go toe to toe with him
it also makes me Wish other fights in the show had been done with motion capture because i feel the “weightlessness” you said you like about the duels in the rest of the show actually under sells just how high stakes lightsaber fights were when lightsaber fighting was at its peak.

  • @Mateocabrera2389

I like that halfway through the fight they showed Ahsoka catching her breath. Makes it feel real and shows she’s exhausted to keep up with Maul. She’s not an overpowered Mary Sue. Rey cough cough.

You mentioned the difference between the usual crazy, weightless style of the clone wars, but I think the live action style of this was perfect. When you watch the Maul + Savage v Palpatine your feeling is “oooaaah daaamn” you’re excited for a crazy battle. But this fight is more about the weight of the moment and dread of what’s coming. To me that makes it perfect

Honestly that is the beauty of Star Wars in that it is more a vehicle for story telling rather than being lodged in a single theme. Nothing did this better than Clone Wars (and Rebels by extension). You can have a big, loud tightly choreographed fight, or you can have a grounded duel like something out of a Kurosawa film, and have both make sense in their place.

Yeah, first time seeing this scene, it seemed a step above, and the culmination of those who made it having spent years mastering their skills and pulling out all the stops. There's noticeable more fluidity and realism to the moves, and the result is an amazing work of art. It's a raising of the bar, and now the one to beat.

I love the end of the duel where you see Maul lose it. Up until then he thought he was still winning, even if Ashoka died he could have still gone through with his plan. But at the end he just panics and loses his calm and cool demeanor. I love the scream and the terror. “Do you know what you’re doing?!? We’’ll die! We’re all going to die!!
