B550. Nowadays no graphics cards to buy for the time being. So, my upgrade path now is to buy an amd chip with inbuilt graphics with a B550 motherboard. My question now is what chip to buy? If the graphics cards are available i want to upgrade to ryzen 5800x chip with a 3070 card or 6800xt card. I do not know if i am the only one thinking in this direction. Can you give us more input on this topic?
I truly appreciate this channel..my 12 year old son (and I) built his first PC. We watched many of your videos and depended on your advice. We went with an AMD Ryzen 5600x build on a TUF gaming B550 plus motherboard with bios flashback and kingston 1TB M2 SSD. Everything went smoothly (a couple minor learning experiences). We couldnt be happier. The speed is amazing. RGB lighting was a nice add on. Thanks again. Great experience!
I was in a bloody dilemma between x570 and B550 for my new build, your video has just give a clear cut of what are wants and what is actually needed for my use. This is just SO BRILLIANT, loved it, liked it, shared it. AWESOME man
Your videos are extremely well thought out, put together, and organized. Straight to the point without wasting any time. Highly informative, with very practical information! Happy to have found your channel, man. I look forward to your future content. I'd like to see you talk about some niche things that some of us think about too, like who actually benefits from using a PCI-E 4.0 SSD instead of 3.0. Are there any other uses for PCI-E 4.0 chipset slots, other than M.2's? I've seen SK Hynix Gold P31 SSD's beat out 4.0 SSD's in game loading times for some reason, which leads me to believe, that gamers simply won't benefit from anything "faster". Also, who benefits from upgrading to, say, a 5800x+ from 5600x (maybe low settings, competitive gamers? Star Citizen maybe? Maybe there's little difference now, but could there be in a year when newer, better GPU's launch with a 5800x?) in gaming. Are there ANY gaming scenarios in which someone benefits from upgrading to at least a 5800x? Another good question is.. How much does 16GB versus 32GB matter for gamers, in say highly RAM demanding games like Star Citizen? I like the idea you did with your video about RAM. You made a quick little checklist for spending more money on RAM. I think the same could be done for other factors too, like upgrading RAM capacity, CPU's(going up in core count), SSD's etc. Thanks again.
Fun and accurate roundup with one exception. As an ITX enthusiast, I would not recommend the MSI model; it has a non-traditional back-plate and makes it incompatible with many coolers.
I just picked up the B550-F (w/ wifi) for my ongoing build. Your last few videos on Ryzen 5000 motherboards have been a huge help my shopping. Thanks for all the great content!
what RAM are you getting? I plan to buy the ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming (non wifi) and the Ryzen 5800x. I want 32GB total RAM but not sure which ram to buy under $200. Should I buy 2x16GB or 4x8GB?
@@afqt80 I went with 3200 CL16 2x8GB. From the videos I've watched, there doesn't seem to be much difference between using 2 or 4 sticks since the board only supports dual channel memory.
Thank you for taking the time to explain the different kinds of motherboards. The tip about the audio codecs was really valuable! Never would have considered that to be a factor. If you're looking for an indepth video talking about the different AMD motherboards for your Ryzen 5000 chips, this is the one to watch!
This has easily been the best and most informative video I've seen so far on what motherboard to buy and why. Thank you for doing all the research and simplifying it for the rest of us. Liked and subscribed
@@PCBuilderChannel Yeah, never built a AMD system before, so before watching this I thought X570 was the only way to go. Now I ended up buying an ASUS ROG Strix B550 instead :)
I just bought an x570 a-pro even tho I probably will never use those extra gen 4 stuff but it was cheaper than similar b550 ones in my region. got it for 150 usd
Funny enough, a couple of months ago, I put together a Ryzen 5800X machine, did the search and ended up with the Gigabyte's B550M AORUS PRO-P. It's a fantastic board!
I have three AMD Mobos: GB X570 Ultra, Asus B550-E Strix, and GB B550 Elite. All of them are great choices at a different price point. The X570 and the Asus B550 are paired with Ryzen 9 5950x, no thermal throttling at all. The GB B550 Elite is paired with Ryzen 5 5600x, no issue at all. One thing I do not like about the Asus B550-E Strix is that if I shut down the computer and unplug the power cord, the computer does not boot when the memory is overclocked. I have to clear the CMOS every time I unplug the computer. No such issues with the Gigabyte boards.
Awesome video! This is exactly the information I needed. Thank you so much! This is very valuable. I've worked as 3D graphics chip architect over many years and every once in a while I build a new system as my latest "my precious" home system. This is a continuation of the hobby I started with, long ago. I started on an Altair 8800 back in the day... (long story). I'm used to working with other senior engineers and your awesome presentation reminds me of my great coworkers. This is one of the best videos I've encountered. Great work! Thanks again.
Got the tuf gaming B550 pro together with an 5600x and i am still mindblown about the perfomanance! Its day night different to my old 4690k.all my games are running amazing great! I nevr had so mich fun using a pc! And it runs stable af.
Your videos are easily the most digestible in-depth tech videos i've found. Im new to pc hardware and these videos have been helping me so much in building my first pc. Cheers!
Thank you for actually covering onboard audio! Finally upgrading from AM3+ with awful audio interference. I'll be happy to ditch the USB dac solution soon
Thank you for your videos, they help a lot. I'm a really picky person and over-analyze a lot before buying anything. I always want to go for the best quality(for me it means durability+speed)/price(gain comparition) products, and with what I call dishonest marketing tactics, it makes the process so much more complicated.
Friendly reminder to all Ryzen 5000 users, also remember to make sure that you are using the latest Chipset drivers as a month or two ago there was a bug in the previous driver that hackers could exploit and with the updated chipset driver, that issue has been resolved.
After watching this detailed review, I decided to go for the X570 Aorus Elite. I had this for almost a month now. This motherboard have all the features I needed and plenty more. It does nice in overclocking. And fits well with my 3700X. Thanks man you helped me to find the real board and the ones to avoid.
On top of this being a very excellent video, I also have to thank you so much for including the audio ALC specs which I have never heard of before but now that I do it's a game changer. Your other videos have been very informative as well. So I have subscribed. Thanks, again.
Purchased the b550 Aorus pro ax back in December to go with an nr200p and I think its great. No complaints whatsoever and I like the bios interface far more than the b450 tomahawk I was replacing. Would recommend 10/10
Really good video. Explained a lot concisely, explained the reasonings behind why you chose that board, showed the board and information most people don't talk about, and there's loads of choices. Plus, it's fairly recent and takes into account the current pricing as of the time of upload (most ppl go by MSRP, which in 2021, is a lost cause). Though one huge, huge warning I have to give is look out for the ethernet chip, especially on the more expensive Asus motherboards. Specifically the boards with a 2.5 gigabit port. They use the Intel i225-V, which is notorious for being defective by design. And there's 3 revisions of it (the first 2 are defective while the 3rd supposedly fixes all the issues), so which revision you get depends on the manufacturing date. Only problem is, Asus corporate is useless and doesn't let you know this information, so it's literally a gamble to get a board with the revision 3 i225-V. And to figure out which revision you have, you need to either disassemble the motherboard and look for the writing on the physical chip, or get it to boot into an OS and check using Asus' Armory Crate or device manager. Trying to get information out of Asus support regarding which revision they're shipping (because it's confirmed they're shipping revision 3 since July for the Intel counterparts, but it's not confirmed for the B550) is like pulling teeth. Like seriously, I bought an Asus Strix B550-F, Asus support told me corporate didn't give them any information whatsoever so they couldn't help me, and I ended up having to follow a random forum post in order to take off the VRM heatsink, angle the board at a very specific angle, then use a floodlight to capture a readable picture of the chip. Got a revision 2 board after all that trouble. I'm lucky in that I have the resources and free time to RMA and return, but a lot of people don't have that luxury. So fair warning to those who buy a board with an Intel i225-V. Loads of angry complaints on reddit, amazon (check the reviews for the boards in this review with the i225-V), and Intel's forums (it got to be so bad that Intel deleted the entire thread dedicated to documenting this issue). But the workaround is to add an external ethernet port via an NIC card thing. You shouldn't have to do this with a $200 motherboard imo, but 2021 is shaping up to be the year of compromises so 🤷 (Time to buy a used 1660 for $500 USD unless you want to wait until 2022 for stock to maybe appear 🥴)
Thank you so much for making this list. One thing I'd like to see in a future list is a list of motherboards that work well for VFIO passthrough. Either as a section in another round-up like this, or its own video.
Great content. You're an excellent presenter and instructor. Built up a couple of systems (an original for self, one MAX for friend) with the MSI Gaming Pro Carbon WiFi and agree that it's an excellent value. A bit long in the tooth in terms of PCI-E features, but still a fabulous offering that has run my Ryzen processors from 2600 to 5800. Even better: its price has dropped by some twenty bucks since you made this video.
@@PCBuilderChannel why do we need a ryzen 3000 first to upgrade a b450? I just did it via live update 6 using a older 1600af. Is that fine? Because I'll be getting a 5600x
Thank you so much for the help. You are really hard working and thanks for the information you shared. I chose a B550 due to it's cheap price and I'm trying to pair a 5600x with a 3080.
I think you miss out ASRock B550M Steel Legend motherboard, but yeah one think for sure your channel was the first that i have seen which explain this 5000 series motherboard problem in super detail.👍
Just building a new pc and your videos have been a HUGE help. Thank you. Went with the Asus TUF gaming 550 plus just because I was getting wifi at no extra cost. I now have the 5600x, 6700xt & the board... time to start filling in the gaps with your other videos :)
Wont lie i picked one up and ended up returning it... It doesnt have bios flashback so if you want to use a 5000 series cpu its gonna be an absolute pain to setup. Not to mention the bios update is still in beta and not under warranty. I am currently decided what motherboard to pickup to replace it for my ryzen 9 5900x build
You're doing the Lord's work with all these breakdowns my guy. Even if I already know what to look for this is still entertaining. Me personally will not consider a mobo without a fixed i/o shield. Ill pay extra, much more premium feeling and a game changer.
Building my first gaming pc in years, and i chose the Ryzen5900x processsor, acquired an MSI RTX3060 Gaming X at a more palatable price after a long hunt, but I personally chose the Gigabyte x570 AORUS Elite wifi board, an NZXT 750watt {C750} PSU, and I have 4 sticks of Corsair 16gb RGB Vengence PRO stix of ram. Should suit me just fine with my setup, plus I have a 3 fan rgb water cooler going into the mix as well.gb. This rig should take care of all my gaming needs!
@@stefencruthirds2310 Wasn't there something that sometimes the board just wouldn't boot, and you'd have to remove power cord or mobo battery or something to get it working again? Also there is the thing with Gigabyte dual bios sometimes kicking you in the other bios. I do have Z390 Aorus Master though, it has none of those problems and it's great. However it does take more boot time than my Asus Z370 Strix and Master sometimes doesn't boot, you have to reset and go through bios, but you don't have to take power cord off or anything like that Ryzen variant. Anyway i guess Msi boards are public favorite nowadays. Tomahawk and Unify. I don't see any reason to buy any other board except super massive discounts or something.
Amazing video man! 🔥 I have a question... ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING (WI-FI) vs ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PRO (WI-FI). Which one is better? - price is the same in my country-I'm going for a Ryzen 5 5600x.
Was just browsing pc content and stumbled across this channel. Extremely informative, and straight forward. You've gained another sub and I hope this channel takes off big time.
Another neat feature of the Dark Hero is the hybrid oc technology. You can set a PBO curve for single core burst loads and a static oc for multicore loads. The mb will automatically switch between. I'm pretty sure this is the only board that does this since it is a hardware implementation over software. You can get the best of both worlds since settings a static oc usually kills single core performance and PBO doesn't give the best multicore performance. I ended up using the Gigabyte x570 Aorus Master for my 5900x. I wish the Dark Hero would have came out before I bought this one though for that feature.
Looking for more info on a motherboard for a R5 5600X and just stumbled on this video /channel! This has to be the most comprehensive video I've seen, no loop holes at the end, no nonsense or over-complicating things! Congrats for the work and keep it up! Hats down to you! 🎩🎩
After watching countless videos about parts/compatibility (novice pc builder here), your videos are the most clear, thorough, and amateur friendly that I've found. Thank you.
@@justinjahn8341 You shouldn't have any problems, but which one? I have a 3950x in my Tuf and a 5950x in my Master. You might need a bios update but they both can flash bios IIRC.
Ryzen 5000 is really powerful it doesn't need any oc or a mild one that works with an average air cooler I don't see any reason to buy a x570 mobo for me b550 its the best balance
Yup! Ryzen5K is extremely power efficient. BuildZoid noted that many of these mainboards could run even a 5950x without any heatsink on the VRMs and be perfectly fine.
If you're looking for durability, MSI makes the best B400-series and B-500 series. They have beefy VRMs suitable for mid to high end builds while still not too overpriced.
You said the price was gonna change a lot, and you are right I’ve been looking at a B550 motherboard and somehow it just jumped to 270 dollars out of nowhere.
What do you say when a motherboard has everything including stuff you either didn't need or didn't even know existed?? Too bad it's going for nearly $700! :)
I will just wait till the motherboard I choose has the new bios already to accept a 5000...while I am waiting I just might score darn video card to go with it!
I'm that target market for the 2.5gb and 1gb LAN ports. I connect to my network with 1gb LAN and to a Qnap NAS sitting on my desk that I use for content creation. Having the port on there saves me from having to upgrade my home network infrastructure to 2.5gb to utilize the speed from the NAS. Great video!
man^ you are THE saviour for me being off the gaming PC market for about 20 years and returning now (last things I do remember are sVGA cards and first PCI ports discussions LMAO)
I have the b550m MAG mortar. It's a fine board. Runs a 3900XT all day long, so would expect it to be fine for 5900X also. USB ports dont matter that much if you have a decent enough screen with a hub built in. I get my Audio from a £10 USB dongle that hangs off of my monitor. There's not much point in overclocking in this day and age, but check for VRM's that can supply clean power consisently without overheating. My price range is generally find out what the cheapest motherboard from a reputable manufacturer is then multiply by 1.5 - 1.6 so that they have margin not to cheap out on crap components.
I've got a X370 Asus Prime Pro. It has a BIOS update from Asus that made it compatible with Ryzen 5000. I've flashed the BIOS when I had my 1600, for better memory compatibility, then my 3700X, and now my 5700X. As you mentioned Pcie 3.0 is fine since even high end cards don't saturate the pcie lanes, yet. My board has a ALC 1220, is full ATX, and has a 3.1 type C connector. The clincher I bought it at Microcenter for just 20.00 with my R5 1600 for 85.00. It's lasted me years, and will last me for years more with the 5700X. BIOS flashing is safe, if you know what you're doing, and pay attention. The only cost to me were my processors. If you can do it stop creating e-waste, or recycle those "old" platforms into something: home file servers, 3d printer print servers, home theater pc's. BTW you had to put the chip into the board right? So you would have to put on the heatsink at least once, right? You have to clean the inside of the PC at least once a year, right? So you would regularly take off the CPU cooler and blow it out, re-paste and reseat the cooler. Geez.
I am looking at the "GIGABYTE X570 AORUS Ultra". I am in a price is almost no object situation and want something that will last a long time. I bought my last system in 2012. My last 2 topics to get covered are 1) How big a power supply do I need? 2) People are saying going past a 5600 is just for show. What is the difference in the high end CPUS? You may have videos covering these already so I will be looking. Thanks for the great video,
We actually have a PSU buying guide on the channel that might be really helpful. They can be kind of complicated so I'd give it a watch. You also might want to check out our CPU guide on the channel. You can find them both on the playlist "How to build a PC". Happy building!!
That was one thorough and in-depth breakdown...lol Thanks for all the info. Tring to configure a custom build and all of it definitely helped. Stay healthy.
I greatly appreciate the Ryzen 5000 builder-benefitting tips in this video. Been awhile since I built a PC (every 5 years or so), and it was a great surprise to me when my 5900X was black screening with no POST (ASUS TUF-B550M PLUS WIFI), and I was stumped for a while troubleshooting other areas. This video correctly and accurately pinpointed my issue, and your next video about the Flashback feature and how-to-use was very helpful (without having to use an older CPU). Subscribed with notifications. Thanks!
I haven't watched the whole video yet, but I got to say already, nice job! You're actually explaining everything and not just focusing in the presentation. I've watched so many motherboard-related videos and read many reviews but this one really helps to understand it all.
Bought my Aorus X570 board when i still used a Ryzen 5 2600 so i luckily could update the bios for my current Ryzen 7 5800x. But you're right - there will be some years before i will need PCIE 4.0
So glad! We do have an updated version of this video if you want to check that out - Best Ryzen Motherboard 2022. 2023 version coming later this spring
A major consideration is the price difference between a comparable B550 and X570; for example, the Asus Rog Strix X570-I in Australia is very close in price to the Asus Rog Strix B550-I.
if youre an asus tuf buyer, and looking at the x570... and building A ryzen 7 5000 series, flashback is only available on the x570 pro, not on the plus version.... Flashback enables updating the motherboard bios without output, aka without actual need of a cpu. This is required as the 5000 cpus require an updated motherboard bios. Ifyou have an older ryzen cpu you can use that and update that way. BTW if you use flashback, use a flash card with an mbr partition (use diskpart to do this). Almost all guides leave this out, but its required
I am going with the RTX 3060 Ti and Ryzen 5 5600x. Please help me which Motherboard will be the best pair for my build. I will be doing video editing and some gaming.
I'm going to be building that same rig in about a week or so. I went with the ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Wifi. See links in the description. Could also go with the Aorus B550 Pro or Elite as well.
I had a 3600X with an Asus TUF B450 mATX. I just got a 5800X. Updated the bios before installing and off to the races. We have an HP Rverb G2 VR headset and I’ve been reading that people with pcie 4 motherboards have been having to revert to pcie 3 to get it to work right so I’m not going to let the slower pcie 3 slot on the B450 bother me. Who doesn’t like an upgrade but I think I’m going to stay with the 450 for now.
5:07 I upgraded from a Ryzen 5 3600 to a Ryzen 9 5950x on a MSI B550m Mortar motherboard. As dumb as it seems, after I swapped it out I go to turn it on and panicked. First thing I saw was the VGA light on the motherboard and no display. First thing I thought was that it was the power supply because it had a 650W and I didn’t hesitate to buy a Corsair RM 850x. Installed new PSU and still same problem. Then tried everything to do w the CMOS even ordered new ones. Still nothing. Took out basically every part in the PC and placed it back in. Checked cables. Bought whole new better CPU cooler. Everything. Then I was like “guess it’s time for a new motherboard.” Proceeded to find this video and came across this. Swapped back to the old CPU and guess what. It works. I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH. Yes it’s something so simple yet something I wouldn’t have ever thought. Thanks again.

If you're looking for an indepth video talking about the different AMD motherboards for your Ryzen 5000 chips, this is the one to watch!
Glad it was helpful! And thanks so much for the feedback, it means a lot
@@PCBuilderChannel But how could i know with motherboard have which codec? I can't find it in the manufacturer specs
This has easily been the best and most informative video I've seen so far on what motherboard to buy and why. Thank you for doing all the research and simplifying it for the rest of us. Liked and subscribed
Glad I could help!
Thank you! Just what I needed. Building my first AMD system after years with Intel. This was all I needed to know about the motherboards :)
Awesome! Glad it was helpful
@@PCBuilderChannel Yeah, never built a AMD system before, so before watching this I thought X570 was the only way to go. Now I ended up buying an ASUS ROG Strix B550 instead :)
@@mannsounds how do you like it?

Thank you for your videos, they help a lot. I'm a really picky person and over-analyze a lot before buying anything. Hey John
Thank you for mentioning the audio section since not many channel talk about it.
Purchased the b550 Aorus pro ax back in December to go with an nr200p and I think its great. No complaints whatsoever and I like the bios interface far more than the b450 tomahawk I was replacing. Would recommend 10/10
The BIOS is already updated and ready for a Ryzen CPU right??
Yes yesss, VFIO, homelab, remote gaming, shared GPU... please yes!

That feature is rarely required. All specifications aren't in use.

If you buy a B550m pro 4 today they ship with 5000 ready bios

What do you say when a motherboard has everything including stuff you either didn't need or didn't even know existed?? Too bad it's going for nearly $700!

Geez.
Awesome video you're great !
