Since memory choice can be very application-specific, balance is usually best. For Ryzen Zen+, Zen2, and Zen 3, I would advise a budget conscious person to use either 3200 CL16 or 3600 CL18 and not worry at all about single rank or dual rank. General users will rarely need anything better than those, and they won't unduly stress your memory controller. I've used 3200 CL 14 and 3600 CL16, and I can't justify spending almost twice as much for imperceptible -- though measurable -- difference. I just bought the last pair of DDR4 sticks I'll ever buy, 32GB of 3200 CL16 for a Ryzen 5600X and a 2080Ti. I paid a mere $70 US. I'll try it at 3600/16, and it will probably work. If not, no big deal.

Now that prices are coming down on parts I'm hoping to upgrade my PC in the near future (built it myself 5 years ago). This was helpful to know about how the memory effects gaming!

I keep seeing the cost effective videos that talk about this or that component only having a 5 percent boost or so. Well what I'm seeing is if I don't skimp that small amount on each component I will get a combined 20-30 percent performance boost.
Great summary and good job on this topic. A variation of your % cost spreadsheet is against the CPU and motherboard cost (not the total system cost), to ensure the RAM cost is proportional to the specs of the CPU and motherboard. No point pairing high end RAM with low end CPU/motherboard.

Nice job. Good balance between making the info accessible but not overly simplified. H/W reviews are a crowded space with lots of established incumbents. You're doing well to find a niche here. In this vid you did refer in the beginning to the difference between 4 single rank sticks vs. 2 dual rank but didn't circle back to that. Small point but thought I'd mention as many (like me) may have come from the GN vid on that topic. Good luck to you :-)
Good video, broke it down pretty well. I'm trying to build a roughly $1500 5600X build and originally I didn't care that much about the memory, but now that I have no idea what GPU I will get I figure I might as well see what the best RAM for my budget is.
Interestingly, I had some old DDR4 that was 2x8GB dual rank. That was from my old Skylake build. In my current R5 3600 build I'm using 2x8 G.Skill FlareX 3200 C14 OC'd to 3800 C16 with 1900 MHz FCLK. It works great!

@@PCBuilderChannel lol, I get 1200 in the range and about 500ish in comp. I'm also running a 5950x. The CPU was a huge bottleneck for Valorant, I had my 3090 first, running it on a i7 7700k and could usually reach a stable 250-300 fps but the 5950x took it to the max. Great video btw, exactly what I was looking for, my last upgrade is the ram. I'm a "willing to spend the money for the best but I'm not a OCing enthusiast" type and would rather not overpay if there wont be any performance gain, your video confirmed that 32gb cl16 3600 is the sweet spot for me. Thanks!
A good option for those on a very tight budget is to get 16GB (2x8) 3200 C16 with your initial build, giving you dual channel/single rank, but then later on when you have a little extra money, or can save some, buy the exact same memory kit again (16GB (2x8) 3200 C16, same brand and kit model number), pop it in the spare slots and now you have 32GB and dual rank. That's how I did it, and the system ran fine for well over a year with 16GB, but then I had a little spare money and bought the second kit. My RAM is now future proof for the life of my system.
Funny, no one can get any graphics card unless your in the unlimited funds category. I plan on going the 3600 16G when I can actually buy a Ryzen 5000.
I had already decided on the 'middle' option (on your conclusion slide) before watching, but your video cemented it for me. Thanks for being easy to understand and straight to the point!
threw in a comment for ur algorithm. you summarised what like 5 different youtubers would have spent around 8 minutes each of my time in just that time! I will laso be rendering content which primarily uses my CPU so i think the sweet spot will be 3800 3600.
It's really great to watch your Channel explode I've been here since you had it 1000 subscribers and I already see you have almost 50,000 congratulations I really love your videos and I want to see more and future although I watch and 1.75X speed
Honestly I just upgraded from 16gb to 32gb. I see a performance difference in which my gaming is no slowing down. I had to make sure the memory matched. I have a nvidia 1660 super with Ryzen 7 5800 series. Now when I say the ram must match I mean it must be the exact same kind. You will need to not only match the memory brand and model but pay attention to the megahertz and make sure they match. I had to go and if you can I recommend hold on to the box of your memory stick and look at the bar code and match them. Once you get the Correct or exact ram that matches you will install them carefully. Make sure that the slots are properly aligned before insertion and locking in the memory stick. Next you will turn on your pc after hooking it up to your monitor. Keep in mind you wont see your monitor light up, not to worry don't panic. You should depending on your tower see a button with an infinity logo that says insta light loop. Press the button and it will show the bios on your monitor. You will see the bios and go to the Ram speed. From their look you will set your ram frequency to its highest setting ( for example if it says 3600, you will set it to 3600. Don't go any higher than what your Memory stick is recommended for!) My Memory stick was recommended to 3200mhz and that is what I set it to.
Great video! I just installed Crucial Ballistix 4x8GB 3600Mhz (CL16) overclocked to 3800Mhz/1900 FCLK CL16 @ 1.41V. Running flawless on a MSI Tomahawk X570 w/ Ryzen 5800X! I originally had only 2x8GB at that same OC as mentioned above...once I installed 2 more sticks I did see a performance boost of ~5%. Good stuff!

Wow this came out at the end of 2020, talking about almost reaching 5k subs. Now its currently Sept 22' and got 195k! Big growth! Love to see it!! The amount of new information that I've learned binging your videos these last couple days has been absurd. I built my first PC in 2012, Jr in HS, very low budget build. In 2019, I bought a complete gaming PC off craigslist for 500$ Very Decent parts. I have yet to ever own a High end PC and with the market prices going down. I don't need the latest 12th gen or 3080s but buying now with my adult budget, I am trying again. And you sir, Have helped a lot with my decision making. Not being a 1440 gamer, or content creator, big help
I'm in the "can't hit 2000MHz on the infinity fabric" club. Ryzen 5900X on an Asus Strix X570, with Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR4-4000. Hoping future BIOS updates will enable it, but for now, sitting at 100% stable 1900 MHz infinity fabric, and DDR4-3800. Guess I can at least try tweaking some memory timings in the mean time!
i built my x570 system 4 years ago, using a 3700x, 16gb lpx 3200 ram with a 2080super, 1000w psu and an 860 evo ssd and it all just worked so good... sill does. it seemed like the perfect combo of parts...but now i just finally got me a 3090... haven't bothered installing yet because I'm thinking i might just upgrade to a 5800 or 5900x and a 32gb kit of good ole Lpx 3200 and hopefully that should last (future proof) for another 5-10 years but i was wondering about memory compatibility so this video answered all my questions! well done
@@PCBuilderChannel I appreciate it! I haven't done a custom build since 2014 so it's been very fun learning about the "current" or future compared to what was 2014 🤓👍

I game at1440p with a 3080. About to upgrade to 5600x from 3700x. From what I understood, ram isn't gonna do much for me because of my resolution. Thank you, I would of been so annoyed with just 8ish FPS increase for over $160 on new memory modules.
R5 5600X / TForce Vulcan Z 2x8GB CL16@3200mhz / RTX 3080 I felt it was necessary for *future* gaming, to double the ram. Now sitting at 4x8GB of CL16@3200mhz Seriously got the feels that games like Starfield, and more importantly, ES6 are going to demand quite a bit, in terms of high/ultra qualities, and loading it all.
Enjoyed this concise and well edited video. Now you have more than triple the subs mentioned in the video. Glad to do my part to help your informative channel grow. #Subbed

Thanks for this informative video, it joins several concepts and makes a good sense for the buyers at the moment of buying things.
Glad it was helpful!
8:26 : "Who game's at 1080p on a 3090"
Me: Running Valorant at 1600x900 on a 3090
Wow, I get like 400+ fps on valorant at 1080p while streaming on a 3070. You can run that game on a toaster. How many FPS are you pushing there?
Thanks!
@@MMTMacroTrader i think 3600 cl16 can easily give you 4000+ boost clock.
Bought an Ryzen 9 5950x and a RTX 3090 FTW3 ULTRA too. There's a unboxing on my channel.
I have a 5600x and rtx2060 and get over 450 everywhere, game on 280hz 1080p monitor.
lol@ 5k subscribers, 5 months later you've got 24k. Good work.
Growing fast!! Thanks! It’s been a wild ride (:
Thank you, a year later and this is still the best no bs guide.
thank you! Glad you enjoyed
Getting 3600mhz cl16 (16gb kit) for my 5 5600x + 3060ti !
Hope I can get this build one day :)
I got ryzen 5 5600x with 4x8gb rgb pro @ 3600mhz with 16 cas and a 5700xt oc evoke.
@@sopcannon yeah bro 🔥👍🏿
I was saying to make a video on RAM ICs🙏
Thank you for the suggestion. What would you like to see covered in that video?
@@PCBuilderChannel all information about RAM ICs
How many are there, what are ICs , how to check which one is better etc ...
@@yuvrajmadaan2 bro i saw u in gambit senpai's youtube channel and PC Wale too i think😁
@@pixels_buh yes you are right. I am top commenter on pc wale, gambit senpai, tech nation, tech Suvidha youtube channel 😁
@@yuvrajmadaan2 awesome👌
Funny, no one can get any graphics card unless your in the unlimited funds category. I plan on going the 3600 16G when I can actually buy a Ryzen 5000.
looking back on this in 2022 when gpu's are starting to drop but a good 3080 ti is the system budget .o.
I had already decided on the 'middle' option (on your conclusion slide) before watching, but your video cemented it for me. Thanks for being easy to understand and straight to the point!
Glad we were helpful! Thank you for watching
Can you do a video of actually building the pc. I’m a first time pc builder and I don’t really know that much.
Coming very soon!
There's plenty of videos out there
"who games on a 3090 at 1080p?" *looks nervously at professional fps esports playing at 360hz monitors*
Lol, but for the esports titles that get played at 360 hz you actually don’t need a 3090
@@PCBuilderChannel I dont think anyone 'needs' a 3090
threw in a comment for ur algorithm. you summarised what like 5 different youtubers would have spent around 8 minutes each of my time in just that time! I will laso be rendering content which primarily uses my CPU so i think the sweet spot will be 3800 3600.
Thanks for the comment! We appreciate it (:
for ur services in schooling generations about PCs i offically knight u rise Sir Pc Builder ⚔️

Man.... You have saved me SOOOOO much money when putting together my kit. Thank you so much for all of this amazing content!!
Happy to help!
It's really great to watch your Channel explode I've been here since you had it 1000 subscribers and I already see you have almost 50,000 congratulations I really love your videos and I want to see more and future although I watch and 1.75X speed
Awesome! Thanks for sticking with us (:
2 years later this advice is valid and appreciated !
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching :)
Don't go any higher than what your Memory stick is recommended for!)
My Memory stick was recommended to 3200mhz and that is what I set it to.
Good stuff!
Nice work!
This is amazing. After hours of searching and no answers this video covered everything I needed to know.
Glad it was helpful!
i'm glad i found your channel!one of the more cinsere and easier to understand channels for us normal people!i really hop that by new year it really takes off because you deserve it!i hope you have a great year with plenty videos to enlighten us all!
I appreciate that! Thank you so much! Have a happy new year and welcome to the channel!
Thank you so much! We have grown fast and we really appreciate the support. So glad we can help you plan out your build!
Epic videos - respectful and addressing actual consumer needs in a succinct way
Thank you! So glad it was helpful!
Now that's a real tech enthusiast talking straight to the point. Way to go, all the best.
So glad you enjoyed! Thank you for watching
This video was extremely helpful thanks! You deserve more subs
Building my first pc, a Ryzen 5600X one and I've learned a lot from your videos on autoplay than what I did searching for specific videos. Thank you!
Glad I could help! Best of luck with you build!
I don't know why but I have a feeling your channel is gonna get big with that quality content.
I hope so! Thank you for the support!
Guess I can at least try tweaking some memory timings in the mean time!
i built my x570 system 4 years ago, using a 3700x, 16gb lpx 3200 ram with a 2080super, 1000w psu and an 860 evo ssd and it all just worked so good... sill does. it seemed like the perfect combo of parts...but now i just finally got me a 3090... haven't bothered installing yet because I'm thinking i might just upgrade to a 5800 or 5900x and a 32gb kit of good ole Lpx 3200 and hopefully that should last (future proof) for another 5-10 years but i was wondering about memory compatibility so this video answered all my questions! well done
WOW! You were at 5k subs on this video. Look at you now. 334k+ I understand a little more about ram now, watching both your videos back to back
Its crazy how we've grown! Sure appreciate the support

@@PCBuilderChannel I appreciate it! I haven't done a custom build since 2014 so it's been very fun learning about the "current" or future compared to what was 2014 🤓👍

I don't comment often if, at all but, you're awesome and do a good job explaining. Keep it up.
I appreciate that! Thank you so much!
I love how your videos always have a intro where you list literally all my questions
Thank you! I try really hard to focus on what the community wants to know rather than just what I want to put out. It's a lot harder to do than anyone thinks (especially me before I launched the channel!). It's great to get feedback like this.
@@PCBuilderChannel Honestly its like you're somehow reading my mind!
I game at1440p with a 3080. About to upgrade to 5600x from 3700x. From what I understood, ram isn't gonna do much for me because of my resolution.
Thank you, I would of been so annoyed with just 8ish FPS increase for over $160 on new memory modules.
Glad we could help!
R5 5600X / TForce Vulcan Z 2x8GB CL16@3200mhz / RTX 3080
I felt it was necessary for *future* gaming, to double the ram. Now sitting at 4x8GB of CL16@3200mhz
Seriously got the feels that games like Starfield, and more importantly, ES6 are going to demand quite a bit, in terms of high/ultra qualities, and loading it all.
Alright. I dragged my heels subbing to this channel but this video took me over the finish line. Great stuff!
Enjoyed this concise and well edited video. Now you have more than triple the subs mentioned in the video. Glad to do my part to help your informative channel grow. #Subbed
Thanks again!
I love how synthesised and easy to understand your videos are. Before i see your video i watched the videos from you description and only after i have seen your video i chose which memory to buy. Great work!
Awesome, thank you!
I started watching from the motherboards video, thought im more of a Buildzoid watcher, I still love these kinds of videos that are energetic and easily consumable by normal viewers that I can highly recommend to my friends that are in the know how but not too technically deep but still needs the extra info
Thanks! Yes Buildzoid is a whole other level into hardcore overclocking. My audience is pretty wide from beginners to intermediate builders to experts. Welcome to the channel!
Logged in just to like the video. Well laid out and you made a lot of good arguments. Thank you!
