      Hi Frank! Truth is that we have a lot of skilled tradesmen in the family. Lucy and I couldn't even think about doing what we do if we didn't have their help and support. We really owe a lot to a lot of people. Thanks for watching.

      Geezer at the Wheel With all the fuss about technology, people seem to forget we will ALWAYS need skilled craftsmen (and women) to build stuff and keep it all working. These talented people will never starve. Take care....

    I'm so glad that you are doing the repair the proper way and not just Jerry rigging it like so many would do for simplicity. You should be ready for the summer I'm sure. Thanks for sharing my old friend.

      Hi Jerry! I like to fix it once and then move on. Paul has the same mindset, so rigging it is not an option. I hope we get ol' Classy ready for a short trip next month. But we'll see. Thanks for your continued support my friend.

    it is looking great. I love to see our old campers loved and fixed. Your nephews are a blessing for you. Most repair shops charge way to much to do that kind of work. I hope more viewers see that it can be done and do it themselves. Great Job.

      The problem with the big shops is not only the price but are they any good my brother had one replace his roof they did a lousy job first trip out and the fiber glass side panel on the cabover rip off they fixed it on warranty but instead of properly joining the new to the old they just put a seam on a trip 3 years later the other side came loose fortunately some one let him know it was flapping he called me asking me what to do I told him to screw it and duct tape it so he did and it's still holding now it's my problem to fix as he gave it to me before he died so video like this gives me an idea of how to fix the unit as the roof has been leaking on the cabover since the warranty died about 6 years ago

    Geezer, I'm in the middle of the same re-build...completely deconstructed and about o rebuild. Please tell me what you used to attach the skin to the new sleeping deck. I tried liquid nails on one of the rebuilt stantions behind the front seats and at this moment it is laying flat and screwed tight. I'll be releasing it on Monday to see how well it adhered. Not sure if I should be using resin for this so I'd love to know what you used, what your experience was with adhesives. Thanks a lot! Great video, it's one of a few that inspired me to take this project on. Peace

    • @GeezerAtTheWheelGang
      @GeezerAtTheWheelGang  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael! I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I had forgotten what we used and had to go out to the storage yard to get the information. We used Loctite Power Grab Heavy Duty as the adhesive for the skin. It worked great! Thanks for watching and have the best of luck with your project. 👍

    • @michaelferry2733
      @michaelferry2733 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! That's timely info. I tried 'Liquid Nails' on the skin piece for the lateral support, screwed it together and screwed that whole thing to a solid platform, waited 2 days and NOTHING! Liquid nails does not work. So, I cleaned that whole mess up last night, sanded it all down clean and used fiberglass with one layer of matting between, unscrewed it this morning and VOILA!!...A BOND MADE IN HEAVEN! So, it's good to know Loctite works. I'm bringing back all my Liquid nails now and will get Loctite. I did notice that you all took that skin piece all the way out and I've seen others leave it in and use clamps to hold it together. I was leaning toward the latter method. What are your thoughts on that? Why did you find it necessary to take that piece all the way out? I can see that it would be easier to do it on the ground or bench. All those screws are easily accessible so I might do it that way too. Probably won't get to that part till tomorrow so I'd like to hear your thoughts on that if possible. I'm really grateful to all you folks who took the time to vlog this operation cause otherwise I never would have taken this on. As it is, I have a '98 Coachmen 22ft (hard to find when you're looking for one) with V10 In otherwise good shape, for $1750! A steal I think but who would touch something like that? One side of the lateral support brace was completely soaked and rotten and that's what I'm rebuilding now. The whole camper body was literally separated from the cab!!! But it becomes apparent that once you know what's involved and have everything you need on hand. Two able bodies can do the whole job in 3 days and yet there's one couple on YT that paid 11k for this repair!!! There's a huge market for this now I think as there are plenty of these Class C's with the same problem going cheap. I'll let you know how it comes out. Thanks a million for the feedback. Looking forward to hearing back from you on the issue of leaving in vs taking out the sleeping deck underskin. Happy trails! I'll be on the road behind you this Fall. Will have to sell my '97 Bounder that I love but it's just too big. The 22 footer is so much easier to drive and the power to weight ratio is fantastic with the V10 which is a gem of a motor. So, if you know anyone looking for a Bounder (no slides) in good condition, let me know. You can see it on Craigslist Maine. It will be a few pages in. Thanks again! Peace

    • @GeezerAtTheWheelGang
      @GeezerAtTheWheelGang  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We really didn't have a choice regarding removing the skin. To rebuild the nose framing it had to come off. You definitely got a deal on yours. Like you said, once you see how these things are built it's not too difficult to rebuild them. I hope your project is a great success and you make many great memories as fruit of your labor. I'll look forward to hearing how it all goes. The best of luck to you!

    • @michaelferry2733
      @michaelferry2733 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I got some of the adhesive you recommended. Today we built a new platform with insulation. And I sanded all day on that underskin to get it completely clean. So, we're going to sandwich that with two 3/8 panels all glued together with Loctite heavy duty and then 3/4 plywood's going on top of that. The platform we made came out extremely well so I see this coming together well. Still have to figure out the nose. I also had to rebuild both of the lateral supports behind the seats. Had to jack up the camper to realign it with the cab and have that all screwed together tight now so it's getting there but it is a lot of work and detail and learning experience. A second one would take half the time after all the trial and error experience. So, thanks again and I will let you know how it turns out. Peace

    This is a great video series! Thanks! I am going thru the same repairs in our Class C and had a question about the sidewalls. In video 1, Paul shows the sidewalls were rotted and commented they would have to replaced/repaired. In this video, you show the bracing to the sidewalls and it looks like the surface was removed. What did you to the sidewalls as far as the rot? Thanks again!!

    • @GeezerAtTheWheelGang
      @GeezerAtTheWheelGang  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike! Once we got everything opened up, we discovered that Classy has a steel frame. We thought it was wood. The steel was very rusty so we reinforced it with 1/8" steel angle iron. The rotten interior wall was overlayed (after we cut out the rot) with plastic coated bathroom paneling. Kind of like wainscot. It's not a beautiful way to do an intereior, but we're only going to use it for storage anyway. However, with a little trim, new paint and flooring it would make a nice sleeping area. I hope this is what you were asking. If not let, let me know. I'll try to help any way I can. This is a nasty project and I wish you great success. Thanks for watching!

    • @mikel7467
      @mikel7467 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Geezer at the Wheel Geezer, yes, this is what I'm asking. You cut out the sidewall rot but didn't have to cut the entire wall so you could replace the cut out area with the plastic wainscot (great idea, that doesn't rot). Another question, what type of wood did you use for the rounded piece? It looks like 2 types. Did you green treat it? Yes, nasty job but you and your family did a great job on Classy!!

    • @GeezerAtTheWheelGang
      @GeezerAtTheWheelGang  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      All of the wood was replaced with treated wood. Some was green treated and some was brown. I really didn't want to use treated wood because of the chemicals, but I really didn't want the problem again. :) I hope yours goes well for you.

      I really don't remember. I'm trying to contact Paul. When/if I do I'll be able to tell you. Or maybe it will just come to me. Sorry I can't be more help right now. For a guess, I believe that we built the nose assembly and then attached the whole rounded nose to the framing under the window and to the deck.

    I bet you will be happy once classy is fixed and you can get back on the road. It's sad how cheaply these class a revs are made. They should be a lot better made for the prices they charge for them when new. I'm sure they could at the very least make them waterproof so so much damage doesn't happen when they are not being used. My friend's parents got one new in 1982 when we were 8 years old and it only lasted 3 years before it started leaking. It was stored in a heated garage during the winter because we live in Canada. It only had 2500 miles when they had to take it in and get it repaired the first time and by the fourth year they had to trade it in because how bad it kept leaking from the roof and from the sides.

      Hi Allan! Oh yes, we will be so glad to have Classy put back together. But we're very willing to wait and let Paul do it right. It's sad that your friends had such a sad experience. I can't imagine buying a new one and have those problems. I would probably come unglued myself. :) Thanks for watching.

    Looking good. I think Paul should have his own you tube channel. :) Just curious if you are going to keep the cab over as a bed or do something else..

      I agree that Paul should start a channel. I think we're all a little surprised at how well he took to the camera. We're removing the insert for the bed and will just use the space for storage. Thanks for watching.

    Hi, I need to do the same job, but I am doing by myself. How you fixed Fiberglas with the new wood? Did you use a special glue? Thank you!

      That's been a while ago. I don't remember the product anymore. But I can tell you that it came in a tube, like caulk, and was called a quick (or fast) grip adhesive. Sorry I can't be more help, but I can wish you good luck on your project.
