  • In this video I review two of my R.L. Allan Bibles.
    1) I review the ESVSCRBL1 which is the single column reference ESV (2007 translation) in the Blue Highland Goatskin
    2) I also review the brand new ESVSB1 (2011 translation) in the Black Highland Goatskin. This Bible just came out this week and is very impressive.
    Please comment below if you have any questions about either of these Bibles.
    Thanks and God Bless!!

    Beautiful bibles! I have the ESV study bible with single column and i love the way the single column reads. I can’t go back to double column now.

    About the imperfections on the leather those mean that the leather was not shaved down ( making it thinner and weaker ) a true unblemished leather is rare . Most perfect looking leather covers are shaved down and won’t stand the test of time.
    Great review.
    Blessings

    Hey Paul, is your used SCR (2007) still for sale? I've been looking for one for a while.

    Great review sir. I love the first one you reviewed. I own two Brevier Clarendons (original and wide margin) and have to agree that Allan Bibles are top notch. I also have the Schulyer ESV with confessions which is my favorite Bible I own. Thumbs up to the video!

      Thanks for your comment! The Clarendons are very nice, and the Schuyler is simply top notch. I am seriously considering the new Quentel the NASB.
      The first bible I reviewed was the Allan Single Column Reference in the Navy Highland Goatskin. I haven't had that bible for very long, but it is has become my favorite bible. If you like the single column reference format, I would get one before they discontinue them. I am debating buying another one in the exact same color to have in the event they discontinue these. :)

    Again, yet another brilliant review of Allan's Bibles. As stated in the vast majority of reviewers comments, you are making it extremely difficult to choose my first premium Bible. Any suggestions Paul? ESV is preferred. Schuyler is seriously catching my eye with their blue under silver gilting. :) Anyway, great review sir!

    • @pault.5744
      @pault.5744  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank yoU Darryl. :) I have to say, that Schuyler is VERY tempting. I also have my eye on the Blue goatskin with blue under silver gilting. I like the NASB translation and am looking for a premium Bible in that translation. I hear good things about Schuyler (I don't own one yet).
      As far as your first premium bible, I'd be lying if I didn't' tell you Allan bibles are ridiculously well made. I LOVE mine. I know in the video I said that the ESVSCR1 was my favorite bible, and it is. More so because of that beautiful navy goatskin and overall look/feel of the bible.
      That being said, I use my ESVSB (Study Bible) way more than my SCR1. I can't say enough how much I adore my personal size Allan ESV study bible. The one thing I thought I wouldn't like (the size), is my favorite thing about it. I keep it in my messenger bag and take it to work with me everyday. Its small enough that I can hold it in my hand and read it in the cafe at work, yet big enough where I'm not straining my eyes to read the font.
      The notes in the ESV study are far superior to anything else I've seen. I own a MacArthur study bible and it doesn't hold a candle to the ESV.
      I bought my wife the full size ESV Study bible from Crossway in the calfskin and compared the print quality to my Allan ESV personal size. I'm not entirely sure why, but the print, color maps, and text are noticeably more clean and crisp in my Allan than in her full size Crossway.
      Anyway, back to your original question. Not having owned a Schuyler, I can't' tell you how I like it compared to Allan. However, I can tell you that Allan bibles are worth every single penny. It's going to be hard to find your perfect bible because there are so many criteria in a premium bible that to find one that meets your needs perfectly is very rare. I would start with what's most important to you. For me it was: translation, blue goatskin cover, smythe sewn binding, art gilting (blue or red), good paper, at least a semi yapp (preferably full yapp), and 3 ribbons.
      The ESVSCR1 met almost all of my criteria. If you're going to actually use the study notes to study (or guide your studying). I would jump on one of the Allan personal size study bibles as your first premium bible. You'll definitely use it. If you're not necessarily into a study bible, but want a great reading bible I would look at the SCRs, or the Readers. The Readers are double column, but have better paper and print than the SCRs as I believe they are printed and bound in the Netherlands.
      Please share what you end up getting after you get it and have a chance to use it. :)
      God Bless!

    Thank you for the great review. I'm considering purchasing the ESVSB but before I do my only two reservations are with the font size and the opacity of the paper. Do you know what gsm the paper is? What would your thoughts be on ghosting? How would you rate the Allan in comparison to Crossway's ESV? Many thanks.

    • @pault.5744
      @pault.5744  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phil, the paper on the ESVSB is 30 gsm. It is not as thin as many bibles on the market, which is surprising since this is a study bible. There is some ghosting, but in my opinion that is to be expected in any bible. The ghosting in the ESVSB is not bad in my opinion. The paper quality is good and the font is bold enough to make the smaller font size legible. The font is on the small size at 7.3 for the text and 6.5ish for the study notes. But unless you're comparing it side by side to a bible with larger font, you forget how small the print is. The smaller size really does not bother me, and it shouldn't bother your especially if you don't struggle with smaller fonts. For the smaller size of this bible, and considering all of the articles, illustrations, and study notes in this bible it is very well executed.
      I've said it many times, but my ESVSB is my most read bible. I read it every single day, I typically take this bible to church, and I keep this bible in my messenger bag at work at all times for when I want a quick devotion on my lunch time. The few cons of this bible are far surpassed by the pros. I have debated buying another one of these while they are in print as a backup in case something happens to my copy or if it starts to get worn from years of use (down the road).

      Romanian Redneck Thank you for the reply. Your reviews are very helpful when coming to considering which bible to purchase. I have decided to go for the Allan ESVSB. I also greatly enjoyed your review on the Schuyler Quentel NASB...I'll maybe get my hands on one of those when I can save up enough! As I'm in Northern Ireland I think it's something like $80 postage, which would cost me around $300 for a Schuyler...I'll start saving the pennies! Once again many thanks, and God bless.

    Im undecided which of these bibles I should get. In your opinion, which bible is better for daily reading and use? Also, is the ESV SCR too big in your opinion? I like the fact that the study bible is more hand sized but the SCR can be used almost as a wide margin bible. Decisions, decisions...

    • @pault.5744
      @pault.5744  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are both fantastic bibles. That said, having now had the chance to use both bibles more extensively, I highly highly recommend the ESVSB. I actually sold the ESVSCR from this video. Not because of poor design, but because it was so big. It is every bit a full size bible. And the single column verse by verse is not ideal for daily reading. It is better for teaching and preaching.
      I cannot ring the bell for the ESVSB loud enough. I love it so much I have 2 copies :)
      Great size, limp binding, fantastic leather, and the ESVSB from Crossway is (in my option) the best and most comprehensive study market in production.
      You can't go wrong with either one, but my vote for daily reading is the ESVSB.

    Based on my observation, the edges of the paper in ESV study Bible is quite "wavy." How is it? Does it bother you?

    • @pault.5744
      @pault.5744  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It used to, but not so much anymore. It's the text block that is causing the issue. Some are worse than others. I'm going to post a full length review of the Allan ESV study bible in both brown and black in about a week and you'll be able to see the waviness after 6 months of heavy use in my black one, vs the waviness in the brown one which is brand new.
      The waviness appears (to me) to get progressively better the more the bible is broken in and the binding loosened.

    R.L. Allan just e-mailed me today the following: "The Allan ESV Personal Study Bible is out of stock, I¹m afraid. We hope
    to have new stock at the end of the year."
    Paul, would you say this is the best quality and softest (leather) study ESV study Bible out there? I was looking into Crossway's CalfSkin, but nothing seems to match this quality!

    • @pault.5744
      @pault.5744  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Roman Kozak Roman, the decision to rebind the ESV study bible is a new decision by Allan. Initially they were adamant that they were not going to re-print the ESV study bible. I am curious what changes they will incorporate in this new release.
      As far as the binding goes, you really cannot beat an Allan bible. The highland goatskin is incredible. The copy I have reviewed here I use almost on a daily basis and have done so since November 2013. My copy is perfect broken in and lays flat in Genesis 1 with no problems. Crossway is a mass producer of bibles so they will not have the quality nor the materials that Allan uses. While Crossway does have a nice premium line, for the money, I would buy an Allan. There really is nothing like a perfectly broken in Allan in their trademark highland goatskin.

      I purchases the SCR from Evangelicalbible.com last fall. I believe it was around $215. These bibles may be out of print. I have heard that Allan is planning on binding another round of ESVSCRs this year sometime.

    I am searching for a study bible and came across your channel. It does not appear that RL Allan has any more study bible. I saw in your comment to someone else below that Allan no longer binds ESV personal size study bible. Do you know if they bind any ESV study bible at all? Thanks so much!

    • @pault.5744
      @pault.5744  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      Unfortunately Allan no longer binds the ESV personal size study bible. There was rumors that they may eventually bind the full size ESV study bible in 2016, but in speaking with the owner or RL Allan that does not look like it will happen. Of course things are subject to change.
      The best place to find one of these ESV personal size study bibles by Allan would be the Bible Exchange Facebook page. It may take a few weeks, but that is the best place to find one.
      Good luck in your search!
      Paul

      You are the second person to refer me to the FB page. I am not comfortable using public posting as my FB account is a personal one. But I will look for a way to privately message the page admin! Otherwise, I might settle for what your wife has, and get one from Crossway. I have been happy with their products and services in the past. Thanks again!

    • @pault.5744
      @pault.5744  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually I am still the first person that has told you that, and if you message the Bible Exchange FB page admin, I will still be the first person to tell you that since I run the website, this TH-cam channel, as well as the FB page. :)
      Your other option is to keep an eye out for one that is posted to eBay. People often sell these on eBay. That said, the prices tend to be much higher than the price Allan was asking when they originally bound these and they were readily available.
      Paul

      Oh it was you haha. OK then I will try the FB page. I just keep hearing people saying they swap or trade or bought on Bible Exchange and I was not sure if that was referring to FB or the website. I took a look at the website but can't see to 'get in'.

    How much and where could I buy these?

    • @pault.5744
      @pault.5744  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Allan ESVSCR1 (blue) is $215, and the ESVSB (black) is $225. You can buy both of them at www.evangelicalbible.com. They are the only U.S. approved carriers for Allan Bibles. You can also buy directly from Allan at www.bible-direct.com, but prices fluctuate depending on the exchange rate of the dollar and shipping usually takes longer.

    Do you have the ISBN for these?

    • @pault.5744
      @pault.5744  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark-Anthony, yes I do but the ISBN will help you find the text block bound by crossway, not RL Allan since neither of these text blocks are bound by Allan anymore. However, Allan will be binding the full size ESV study bible as well as the new version of the ESV SCR later this year if you can wait it out.
      ESV study bible personal size: ISBN 1-4335-2461-9
      Crossway single column reference vbv: ISBN 1-4335-1235-3
      Hope this helps!

      +Bruce Norton it is printed in China, but it was done very well. I've been using this bible for 2 years now and it's broken in very well. Also, Allan no longer binds the ESV personal size study bible.
