      If they are oil based wouldn't they over time, have the oil seep into the paper? depending on the paper maybe? I used ball point pens in my old planners for work, and older ones I could see a sort of clear sheen around each line as if that had happened. Almost like the paper was turning transparent, the same way it does when you wrap fried fish in newspaper.

    Phenol is the solvent used in Solv-X as well as in many aircraft-grade paint strippers (for stripping epoxy and polyurethane which most chemicals won't attack).
    It's likely the smell you remember from the aircraft hanger.

    These Parker 25 pens were very popular in the UK in the 80s. I got one for my 18th birthday which I am still using at the age of 54. Mine is in steel, still works well. The paper these days is more porous which absorbs much more ink, making it damper more quickly, and more prone to bleed through. I prefer a fine nib which suits my handwriting, and I find I am able to write better with a fountain pen rather than a ballpoint pen.

    It's interesting to see how differently some people write. Not the handwriting necessarily, but where you begin each letter and the order in which you draw the lines.

    • @recoveringsoul755
      @recoveringsoul755 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It also is interesting to see HOW people hold their writing instruments. Sometimes I am so disturbed by how they hold their pen I can't pay attention to what they are writing. Just, like, how on earth does that feel comfortable? And then i am reminded of the strange way I hold my pens. I am double jointed and what feels most comfortable to me, where I feel like I have control over the instrument, used to drive my 3rd grade teacher batty. She crumpled up balls of paper and shoved them into my hand so my hand was forced to go around them. But I kept dropping the pencil. Fun times.
      The way people are "supposed" to hold pens just doesn't work for me.

    For anyone wondering what Peter was talking about when he mentioned Japanese breakage (as much as I like his word, wabisabi) that word is known as kintsugi or kintsukuroi which is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas with gold, platinum, or silver. By doing this, it symbolizes how breakage and repair of an object is part of its history rather than something that should be hidden.

    • @_Hakiko

    Oh goodness, yes! I'm 62 so this takes me back to my childhood when my Mom, who was an accountant, in the era before computers, would only use her Parker pen in her great big ledgers. She had the most amazing handwriting. In those days you were only allowed to use fountain pens for school. Being lefthanded made that very difficult. Anyway I still have my mother's Parker pens from the early '50's until she retired in the 90's. They still work. We used to pump the ink bladder in the pen a couple of times to fill it up. Thanks Peter for this.

I am curious about the writing you often use in some your drawings (the kind that, to me, looks like a take on Chinese characters). Is it improvised, or a constructed writing system you or someone has created? I only ask because a hobby of mine is creating writing systems for fun...languages, codes and cyphers too. And a constant struggle of mine is finding something that looks natural. I have to say, I love the look of that writing you do, whether it be improvised or not...and you make it look so easy! I can only aspire to create something that flows so well like yours does! Anyways, thanks for sharing your art and thoughts with us!

    I gave my spider plant a haircut just last night. Cut away some of the dead leaves and such. The plant was my mum's but one day she stopped watering it, and it was dying. I took it off her hands, watered it every day, and brought it back to life. Even planted some of its babies in the same pot, since there was space for them. I also have an umbrella plant.
    If you're worried about over watering them, or forgetting to water them, you could get one of those watering globe things. Fill it up with water, stick it in the soil, and the water slowly drips out into the earth.

      oh yes spider plants seem to live forever. And spawn babies so you can make more. When I was in highschool, I bought a Philodendron plant at Walgreens, of all places. It was maybe about a foot tall. I kept it alive for decades. Repotting when necessary, staking it up to the wall, and later the ceiling. It survived the move to college dorms, off campus housing, to an apartment and then my first house. But after I had a baby, I was too busy I guess, and there wasn't a room with really good light. It was mostly the baby thing that distracted me from watering enough or something. It was well over 9-10 feet tall with each leaf easily spanning 12-14 inches across when it died off. So sad. I tried to make it grow UP, and it put out "roots" from higher up nodes, They'd grow longer and longer and I'd guide them towards the soil. I think it's more of a vine supposed to creep along the ground maybe?

    By: Angela Koncz The spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is considered one of the most adaptable of houseplants and the easiest to grow. This plant can grow in a wide range of conditions and suffers from few problems, other than brown tips. The spider plant is so named because of its spider-like plants, or spiderettes, which dangle down from the mother plant like spiders on a web. Available in green or variegated varieties, these spiderettes often start out as small white flowers.

    :o Brad was here!!! word from the wise. never loan your nice pens that's what the ball pens are for. they do the work of the days pen work and are not a tragedy when not returned.

    Hey peter, what kind of sketchbook do you recommend for doodling with markers? I’ve heard about Rendr Sketchbooks and i wasnt sure what my best option is. Thanks man, keep inspiring people across the world!

    My dad had a stainless steel Parker 25, the fountain, ballpoint and roller ball set in the 70’s. I recently got the ball point off him, he could not find the others but I then found a stainless steel Parker 25 fountain pen on EBay. So much a shape of their time and lovely pens to use. I have to say I love the black series.

    I have a Parker fountain pen. I have had it a while. I don’t remember how I acquired it, but I love it. I use it to write in my Hobonichi Daily planner everyday. It was made in the UK. I use it with Parker Quink blue colored ink. I am looking to get other fountain pens, although i am very happy with this one.
    I enjoy your videos. You’re entertaining and talented. I bought the Rotring lead holder that you recommended in another video. Looking forward to getting it.

    Oh good. Now I don't feel so bad that I mentioned sending gifts and am still putting it together.
    It's very nice to meet your plants. So far they seem to be doing very well, especially the snake plant. It looks very happy.
    Thats an interesting nib for sure. I've never seen one quite like that.
    You know they make scented inks but they all seem to be florals. I wonder if they have ones that are more masculine, like tractor, or dirt, motor oil, cigar, or leather. I would think so. Sometimes I feel like anything you can imagine is available somewhere..

    I'd advise getting a pot with drainage holes for the snake plant! They suffer from root rot easily if the dirt stays too damp.

    • @peter_draws
      @peter_draws  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes there is drainage but I put a plate underneath, maybe that defeats the purpose... but I didn't want it dripping all over my floor? Maybe these are meant to be kept on a patio or something.

    • @1012-s4t
      @1012-s4t 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peter_drawsThe plate is alright. If you water and theres a lot of drainage in the plate it may be best to pour the water out of the plate, but as long as the soil isn't soaking in excess water, it shouldn't be a problem. All of my indoor plants have plates to catch the drainage under them. Just keep an eye out for too much water collected in the plate and you should be fine. It was very cool to see your plants by the way:).

      That stuff is worth a lot nowadays that they don't produce it any more... It was the best ink I've ever used and I only stumbled upon it because my dad had tried a fountain pen back in 1994 and didn't like it so I was lucky enough to have a single bottle.

    I've been using mixed media paper for fountain pen drawings lately and it's not too bad. Doesn't bleed through and even though it's not as smooth as I'd like, it stands up to the nib pretty well.

    Sorry if I'm being ignorant or missing something because I've only just subscribed to this channel, but can someone tell what it is he has drawn? It's wonderful to watch it take shape, but I'd love to know more about it and what it says. Thank you. I have the silver version of the Parker 25. I know it's heresy to talk of ballpoint pens but check out some vintage Papermates, the smoothest-feeling of any other ballpoint I've tried. Only just returned to fountain pens, still have my Parker 65 from when I was at school Forty years ago.

    I've seen a few pens with the arrow on the clip. I wonder if they were parker pens. I also wish my grandmother would have been more into recording her work as she was a phenomenal artist. She was commissioned by the Smithsonian to create an exhibit of the fur trade. She was mainly a sculptor. The amazing thing about her creations was she used a clay that was an old Shoshone recipe of bread clay. I'm a direct descendant of Chief Washakie and Sacagawea. Just a little fun fact. I too am an artist and your videos are helping me rekindle my passion for art. I've been following you for about 3 years now and I'm just now getting my groove back. So thanks for your work and your commentary.
