Cleaver Restoration [Black Cleaver With Ebony Handle]

  • New Project, new technique! I used a new technique again in the restoration of this rusty cleaver. With iron (III) chloride and coffee I blackened the rusty cleaver. I made the new handle out of ebony, which now revealed a completely black cleaver. Restoring the old cleaver required me to drill, sand, file, remove rust and glue. I found this old hand tool again on a flea market website and really wanted to have it.
    ▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The cleaver was extremely rusty, so I used rust remover and a screwdriver to remove the rough rust. I used electrolysis to remove the remaining rust. I then used an angle grinder to make the rough contour and on the belt grinder. I ground down the sides until no pitting was visible, up to a grit of 1000. Using a jig and a grindstone, I resharpened the cleaver. Now I dipped the old hand tool in iron (III) chloride and coffee. The new wooden handle is made of ebony. Now all that was left was to assemble everything and the black cleaver was ready.
    ▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I used the following tools: screwdriver, wire brush, rust remover spray, hacksaw, magnetic bowl, lab power supply, sodium hydrogen carbonate, pencil, ruler, angle grinder, cordless screwdriver, drill, belt sander, orbital sander, sandpaper, grindstone, chisel, instant coffee, two component glue, steel wool

Videos like this make me happy to be alive in a time where these niche crafts can be seen and appreciated by people. A hundred years ago someone like me who works in a completely different industry might have gone their whole life without seeing a restoration. There's also something in seeing an old forgotten tool be brought back for a chance at a second life. Thank you and please keep doing what you're doing.

I know this is from four months ago so you might not see, but here’s a few suggestions that might help you (though I’m sure you’ve likely learned since then):
-to prevent the “scratched” look, you could wet send with P1200 and/or use a rubbing compound (the latter will really help out a mirror finish)
-the handle is a bit chunky, but that’s no problem at all if it fits in *your* hands well. However I would mention that the front end should be less thick than the back, even with the ergonomic fit. This is just so that you can keep a solid hold on the knife and it won’t go flying, should you give something a good whack with it. Not so much for comfort, just for safety.
-I think there may have been a slight warp in the handle? Or maybe the raw ebony that you laid the handle on was warped and the handle was straight. I honestly don’t know 😂 either way, doesn’t matter too much as long as the end result works, and it definitely does! Good job!
Overall you did a really, really great job! I loved the stains and the handle came together REALLY nicely. I never would have thought of adding ebony dust to the glue to match the color! Definitely earned a sub from me 💜

I can’t help but think that tang is going to snap at the top bolt hole if that cleaver is actually used like a cleaver.
The restoration other than that is beautiful.

I'm sorry but can you explain how?

@@kimohimo60 The tang was originally pretty wide, and he cut it down and made it more narrow. There is very little metal left on either side of where the holes are drilled. If this cleaver is used functionally, this is where the handle may break.

@@kimohimo60 There are two weak spots. It’s not much material left around the holes and the sharp angles creates stress points in the steel.

It was just so therapeutic watching the full restoration. Just amazing! I wish I had the time to acquire those skills and a place like a woodshed.
