The "default" nib actually looks like regular #5 nib that comes with Jinhao fountain pens like 599 or 992. The "camel hump" on the nibs with round ends is called reservoir and is meant to hold more ink thanks to surface tension. To improve the flow, the reservoir needs to be pushed slightly more forward towards the tip (you moved it back a little while trying to insert it into the handle). It works better with "calligraphy" inks because they tend to be slightly thicker than fountain pen inks.
Stab the nibs into a potato for a few seconds to clean them before use. Then clean them with water and dry them before storage. You could also use windex to clean them before use.
Hey, Peter :) Thanks for the entertaining video! A trick i've learned for more ink capacity and a more even ink flow in dip pens: holding the nib into a candle flame - a thin coating of soot will form that helps hugely! I read somewhere that this was common in the days of the dip pen - and it definitely works. Greetings :)
Hi, Peter. First be sure you clean your nibs well. Hold calligraphy pens at a 45-degree angle. Up strokes are thin and down strokes are as thick as the nib. The round nibs are "Speedball" knock-offs. There are some good YT vids on using Speedballs. You'll get the hang of it and create some wonderful artworks! Also, I love the videos where you just draw and talk . . . you have a wonderful way of telling stories and a such a soothing, peaceful voice. Just draw and talk - love the drawings, love the talk.
So with nibs I was advised to hold them over a flame to give them a bit of carbon on the tip so it holds more ink (because of the texture). That has really worked for me. To clean them you can wash them, you just need to make sure they're COMPLETELY dry asap to avoid rust afaik.
I think this is a very good starter set! I always liked dip pens because you don’t waste empty pens, I have thrown away a lot of pens that just stopped working and that is wasteful! You should always clean a nib before use and after washing up be sure they are dry before putting them away. I have disliked refillable pens because they always seem to have restrictions on the ink you are supposed to use with them. I just find them tiresome, I will say that you have brought pen and ink back into my awareness andI am thinking about doing some ink drawings and InkTober might be just a wonderful jumping off point! Thank you for your review, have a great day!
I love your Channel Peter, the way you talk and simply live your art is so relaxing. This video in particular is great because a friend has gifted me a similar second hand set and I was wandering what each nib would be useful for. I mean, just looking at the tiny metal hand made me think "I have so much to learn about calligraphy".
I'm from the future. In fact, after two years of worldwide pandemic and the craziest rollercoaster of events, Peter is pretty much the sanest human left.
Peter, after using the nibs you should quickly deep them in alcohol to clean. Also you are running out of ink too fast because you are taking of the ink frm underneath the nib, try just to touch the tip on the glass after deepin in the ink to take away the excess Great channel, love your work
I enjoy your soothing yet honest reviews. I feel like too many channels overhype their products and I never feel like I can trust them in good faith. I’ve been listening to these when falling asleep :)
Hello Peter. Yes those humps are used to hold more ink for writing. I own some by myself. The other one with the big round point is usally used to fill areas with ink, if I remember right. Cool stuff. Looks like a good set to start with for one who is into handwriting and wants to improve. P.S.: How does the ink taste? ;-)
Peter, new subscriber here, the humps are inkwells. With the last one you used, the reason it did not keep writing after your initial dipping was because you interrupted the ink flow by tilting the pin upward. If you look up a few demonstrations on how to use those, you just might like the way they feel and write. Hope you enjoy them. I know who you remind me of now, Bob Ross. The way you are so calming.
