The Shura=boots meme is one of my favorites on the FE community. But ironically I never killed Shura in any of my Conquest runs, the guy is just too likable to bring myself to change him for a stat booster.
Waiting for the army management FE. Where you are the leader of a mercenary group and actually have to balance equipment, gold, units, and take jobs that pay.
@@mathishd5558 not to the degree I'm talking about though. I meant like: Paying your units when you use them, but also paying for them on a housing basis. Hiring new units in an efficient way. Buying newer/better equipment. Taking jobs that pay, instead of pure story progression. etc.
10:19- So about this story gold, it actually leads into something that I find kind of interesting and blows the cost of hiring any of these "Beowulfs" out of the water. [Warning- Minor Spoilers for Path of Radiance.] For those wondering about the story gold that comes on this map, it was supposed to be Daein's payment for receiving the aid of Naesala and some of his Raven Soldiers. However, that 50,0000 gold is not all of the money that they were promised. After clearing that chapter, you get 70,000 actual gold for you to use. What this means is that Daein paid 120,000 gold for their services. While Daein never paid this gold since they were only supposed to be paid after and how Reyson persuades Naesala and his men to withdraw, I always found it amusing that the enemy in this situation were willing to pay more money than what most FEs will give you for just a single fight for one mercenary group and failed horribly. Granted the price does make sense since at most, Daein is paying roughly on average 7,500 gold per Raven if you count all the Ravens (16, Naesala included) that could show up on PoR Hard Mode, but that rate might be even lower for the common Ravens given how high Naesala charges for himself. Speaking of which, you also have to wonder how much Naesala himself was charging for him to take part in the battle since in an earlier chapter he toyed at the idea of himself costing triple the rates of what most Ravens charge for their services and how much the cost of hiring Naesala made up that 120,000 gold.
I still can't get over the fact that Corrin deadass takes the guy he just executed's boots off of his corpse. Probably the most ratchet thing Corrin does in all of Conquest (and that's saying something). Also I don't think I could make such a decision regarding Nyx if we were given the same option in Rev...though given that I was the guy that spent half a day training her up to the same level as the rest of my team in Rev, I guess that would go without saying.
I honestly want a mod/remake of FE6 where Hugh would leave if you refuse all of this offers, then return to a later map, where he could only be recruited by Niime, who would literally pull his ear to the other team.
He's one of the few Fates characters that isn't a one-note personality, comes with plot-relevant backstory, has personal motivation for fighting outside of lord loyalty, and is solidly written all-around. Outside of paranoia of him betraying you during a first playthrough (I admit the thought crossed my mind during mine), I don't know why anyone could possibly want to off Shura. He's just great.
@@0ctopusComp1etely Furthermore he is one of the few units playable in all three routes, and comes promoted lvl10 really early in Conquest which makes him quite unique as a unit.
I really wished that in Crimson Flower (Fe3h) If you didn't recruit Shamir, you could hire her in chapter 14 (Defence of Garreg Mach) for 25 000 gold since its quite clear that she would leave the army she is in for those numbers
I actually have a funny story about Shura. When I played Conquest and was presented with the choice to kill him, I felt too bad to go through with it, but was terrified that sparing him would lead to him betraying me later on. Because of this, I decided to have my avatar S-Support him so he have too deep of an emotional bond to double-cross me. Of course, this fear ended up being unfounded, by I was still somewhat new to the series and it seemed like a legitimate concern to me at the time.
@@zxylo786 Eh, there are plenty of strategies for dealing with Conquest Endgame on Lunatic, besides there are few characters in CQ more fit to trivializing the Ninja Cave than Shura.
Hugh is such an interesting character, and a weird unit. I love him to death as a unit and he's an amazing character... But he's not really worth his asking price unless you're doing the Magic cap glitch
I used Hugh in two of my normal mode playthroughs, and he was equally as good as Lugh and Lilina. All three of them are solid units. Although maybe I just got lucky in those two playthroughs cause I'm surprised to hear that his growths aren't great.
I've always gotten Rennac in Sacred Stones, (using La'Rachel) but by that time I've groomed Colm for the rouge class. So I get him but immediately Bench him.
If you bought the guide book for the game back in the day, it basically tells you to use La’Rachel to recruit him, never mentions the option of paying for him. So that’s how I always recruit the bum. But like you, I train up Colm.
I reclassed Shura into a berserker and he was a mad lad. High speed and skill, with enough hp to withstand a couple hits. I was really happy with him :)
Should've mentioned Overflow Hugh, the glitch where if you recruit Hugh for the lowest price, suspend the game, then immediately promote him to Sage he gets capped Mag and Skill lol
I honestly didn't know Rennac was a "Beowulf" I always just talked to him with L' Rachel since I knew he was with her and Dozla before, so she would obviously be the one to recruit him (Also with her it would be a bit easier to catch up to him with her 6 move versus the Ephraim/Eirika and their 5 move).
I also use L’Rachel to recruit the bum, so I never knew he had to paid otherwise. Then again, I do have a guide book (magazine really) that tells you to use L’Rachel to recruit the idiot.
Japanese slang nickname for Shura is ブーツさん (Būtsu-san...i.e. boots or mr. boots). I guess like English fans Japanese fans can also reduce characters to their lowest common denominator. For FE7 if you talk about the funds rank than promoting Dart can be similar to recruiting Farina (bit off-topic as it was not a recruitment cost). Maybe I always approached funds rank wrong as it felt like you both had to be ultra-frugal and keep track of things externally though I recall in modes with silver card it was somewhat easier (as you can turn gold into elixir to double it's value).
In another case of "Kaga did it first", the mercenaries you do hire in Berwick Saga (i.e. most of your army) DO cost money every chapter, and the higher level they are, the more they cost. I mean, eventually they become free after you finish their personal sidequest, but those come only after MANY maps you play with them and you won't get most of them permanently recruited until 3/4 through the game. Really incentives you to go after those bullions and treasure chests in that game.
(FE3H CF/Edelgard route spoilers) I wish killing Claude in CF gave you Failnaught and/or boots, just to provide a material incentive for trying that choice out.
Two fun stories about the characters in this video. When I first played radiant dawn, at the chapter when you recruit volke, spent all my gold on forges. I thought “it’s the second last chapter anyway, may as well.” I remember talking to him, exited to get one of my favourite characters from path of radiance back. Only for him to call me poor and just fucking dip. In my first play though of conquest, I was under the impression that my choice to kill shura meant nothing (as does literally every other choice in fates lol). So I killed him thinking Elise would stop me or something. Boots were 100% worth tho.
Here's a fun fact about Rennac, having a price that ends with 8 is basically the Asian equivalent of having prices that end with 9 in North America or Europe. He's basically saying "I'm not $100, I'm only $99.99."
So interesting thing about Volk in Radiant Dawn: He still takes 50 gold per chest or door you unlock with him, but by that point there is only one chest in the game. So what happens if you don't have 50 gold? You can't open the chest. but what's more is that if you then check the info box, the text will be "dummy", meaning that this is such a remote situation that the play testers never found it. (Source: BigKlingy) Edit: Realized after writing that this was already in the video, whoops.
@@halcyon_echo42 Agreed. I find it so amusing to see her due basically as Green Scorpion put it on his least favorite Fire Emblem "Pull Rennac back by his ears" even if I never use him since I like to to quote Oscar again "Make Colm an Assassin and just give him a lockpick"
I always thought that you were SUPPOSED to recruit him with her. Because they work together and such. Never in my life I'd think that he actually charged money.
Perfect timing. I’m in the process of doing Hector hard mode for the first time (with save states because holy shit is that mode tough) and am just about to recruit farina.
This is great - I have fond memories of grinding to make sure I had enough gold for Farina, just because I wanted to utilize the triangle attack for the first time!
I totally forgot about Conquest ch16’s gold mechanic, that’s so clever and I wish I had time to play Conquest again. I think I’ve always kept Shura even without using him, because I just don’t want to kill characters
Such characters do round things out in a world. The lack of such in Awakening might be a nod to perhaps the different atmosphere of the area (now and back in Marth's days).
Keep up the great work Ghast. I always spend the money on these units, and the highest amount on Hugh, even if I'm not planning on using him. I'm a sucker.
Can’t forget Hughs magic stat can roll over and instantly cap out if you refuse his initial price and he rolls a few specific stats (I don’t remember which) and then he will immediately have capped magic.
I was waiting for this comment. This is called the Underflow Hugh glitch. It comes from Gringe's older FE6 translations. It's caused by FEditor (the hacking tool used to edit text, graphics and other stuff) applying a patch that allowed for stats to surpass the cap of 31 by saving extra stat data to another location. You need to break the caps, then suspend and resume and they'll reset to their max caps. The Feditor Patch freaks out when Hugh's stats get manually reduced from the recruitment choices. Gringe has since patched out the glitch.
When Shura gets added to FEH I hope he comes with Odd or Even Tempest (a skill that increases movement on odd/even turns).... so I can kill him for boots!
I mean this vid is sorta catered to people like you... This series has a lot of history, characters, etc. It's also actually done things before a lot of people want to see in newer games. Like a "darker story", people think Three Houses was the first game to do that when fe 4, 5, and 8 exist (albeit more implicit for 8). Also, it's kinda disappointing recruitments have become much more streamlined and less complex ever since Awakening. Only really having "talk to enemy". Echoes doesn't count cause it's a remake.
@@korinoriz at first, i was wondering why you considered 8 one of the darker games. after some thinking, i remembered that one character is all but directly stated to be a necrophile
Shura had one major flaw going against him. Lack of supports. He honestly should have atleast had support options with the other ninjas. Even though they were from different clans, i'm sure there was SOMETHING to draw conversation about between them. Also in revelations he is ironically kind of busted due to joining absurdly over leveled.
Deen and Sonya are interesting cases as well in Shadows of Valentina... While they may not cost gold, Getting either one is in exchange of the life of the other.
My choice is always Sonya, after all she *was* the better choice in the original version according to a few, and that’s my reason. Besides, hot mommy witch is better than lazy looking nut.
I didn't even know about paying for Rennac since the only time I've recruited him I did it with L'Arachel since I figured she was the only one that could.
Ah, this was interesting! I’ve played several of these, but I still learned a lot here. As for me, I could never take the boots for Shura’s life, regardless of whether I intend to touch him at all. Say what you will, I really like to immerse and let my morals play a part in such decisions!
Man I haven't played Fates and I have no idea what I'm going to do when I have to make the choice with Shura. I always make a point to recruit and protect all possible characters yet I also make sure to collect every stat-boosting item. What an impasse.
I think it'd be super cool to have a Fire Emblem game where one of the main mechanics was hiring characters. Like there'd probably be some story characters who join no matter what, but a bulk of the characters have to be hired for either lump sums, or per-chapter. Like, you could hire one character, let's say an archer named Henry, for 5,000G straight up, or lease him for 500G per chapter, and then at the end of the chapter, he and all of his starting equipment leave with him (so you couldn't just hire somebody with baller starting inventories for one chapter, trade away all their good shit and then let them go). Characters would be more expensive if their starting equipment, level, base stats, weapon ranks, etc. are better, which could incentive you to hire somebody like a Jeigan if you need a boost, but let them return once they're no longer needed. I think it'd allow for a lot of customization of armies in a rather unique way.
I don’t think I’d be able to play Fire Emblem because I would get too attached to everyone and try to collect all of the characters Then cry when they die
That happens to me too, every time I play a Fire Emblem game for the first time I always do the "No deaths" thing. However by my 2nd or 3rd playthrough I'm always like "Whoops healer died lol"
@@b.f.2461 He’s right, classic is for casual chumps. Real champs exclusively play Phoenix mode. I will say Conquest looses a little something on casual mode though. Take that with a grain of salt.
Almost forgot about Rennac because I think he was the only one who died in my playthrough when doing that post game area place (or something of the sort.
Kind of surprised that Gaius from Awakening and Saber from Echoes weren't brought up as honorable mentions. They don't actually cost currency to recruit, but they do require material compensation. Gaius is more just flavor text (heh), but Saber actually does cost an item that Celica comes with. It does inevitably circle back into his inventory as a unit and you can take it back if you want, but Saber does nonetheless cost something to recruit (and it is, well, gold).
the most expensive fire emblem characters are anna from fates and anna from three houses. they're so expensive that you need to spend actual money to recruit them. that's pretty meta. it's also pretty on-brand.
Awesome Video! The only question left of my mind is: what is the most expensive unit possible? Not just full characters but even Including buyable extra units like the Avatar log in Awakening or in fates. Where are the limits how expensive can you go?
I'm a little disappointed you didn't mention the Hugh glitch. I wasn't too keen on him either but then he randomly capped his magic and skill in one level up. I had a ton of fun with that and it doesn't hurt that he's one of FE6's most entertaining characters.
-Ah, Beowulf, the original FE base breaker. He's okay, I mostly pay to recruit him for the sake of completionism but I've used him as a dad and the stats aren't bad. (Brigid/Beowulf is underrated, he can actually pass down Pursuit and a decent sword to Patty.) -Farina may be my favorite Beowulf, she's a great character and well worth the money she costs. -I recruit Rennac with L'Arachel, always. FE8 isn't terrible with money since you can tower-grind for those gold chests, but the recruitment convo is funny and she has the range to grab him before he flees. -Lilina is usually my main mage but I still pay full price for Hugh. I guess because I arena-abuse like crazy in FE6, steal all of the gems, and 10,000 is just a drop in the bucket. That, and he's actually pretty good and he's Canas's kid. -Volke is another one worth the money, but mainly for story reasons. I don't remember using him as a unit a whole lot, but I try to because he's the only assassin in Tellius and I love his role in both games. -OH YEAH I FORGOT YOU HAVE TO PAY TO RECRUIT SHURA IN CONQUEST.
Poor Shura, not only does his life suck and you can kill him for boots but he's the only character available in all three routes that's still support locked with Corrin.

10:19- So about this story gold, it actually leads into something that I find kind of interesting and blows the cost of hiring any of these "Beowulfs" out of the water. [Warning- Minor Spoilers for Path of Radiance.]
For those wondering about the story gold that comes on this map, it was supposed to be Daein's payment for receiving the aid of Naesala and some of his Raven Soldiers.
Hey, sometimes you just got to kill a man for his boots.
@@DarknessDpa Good boots were kind off hard to get in those days.
Corrin really need those boots after walking barefoot for half the game even in snow.
I honestly want a mod/remake of FE6 where Hugh would leave if you refuse all of this offers, then return to a later map, where he could only be recruited by Niime, who would literally pull his ear to the other team.
YOU KNOW i traded Shuras life for those fresh pair of foams.... Can't win a war without my nikes
Shura somehow managed to become one of my favorite units in Fates, I could never even imagine to kill him for boots lmao
He's a great unit and solid A tier
Respect your elders!
Wish Three Houses had more recruitments in general. I get it doesn't really work for the game it is but still sucks.
I just wish Shura had more supports
Yeah, like Azura. I was so confused why he mentions but they never get to talk with each other
Shura is one of the few good Fates characters and it blows.
The characters from the Fire Emblem Echoes Season Pass.
Awakening DLC too
Worst thing is that they aren't even that good lmfao.
Don't forget about 3 houses Anna
@@zxylo786 But the weapons are cool tho
@@Slendiamon we don't talk about three houses anna
I actually have a funny story about Shura. When I played Conquest and was presented with the choice to kill him, I felt too bad to go through with it, but was terrified that sparing him would lead to him betraying me later on. Because of this, I decided to have my avatar S-Support him so he have too deep of an emotional bond to double-cross me. Of course, this fear ended up being unfounded, by I was still somewhat new to the series and it seemed like a legitimate concern to me at the time.
I honestly didn't know there was a benefit to killing Shura
Those boots can be what makes possible the endgame of Fates, Boots are probably one of the best items in the game.
@@zxylo786 Eh, there are plenty of strategies for dealing with Conquest Endgame on Lunatic, besides there are few characters in CQ more fit to trivializing the Ninja Cave than Shura.
Units that cost gold to recruit.
So 90% of the Berwick Saga roster?
we're not talking about Berwick on this channel yet 😅
150 ......
Dang. I'm probably too soft to kill a recruitable character, but if there ever was an incentive, it would be boots.
Hugh's grandma still has headaches on her back
Hugh is such an interesting character, and a weird unit. I love him to death as a unit and he's an amazing character... But he's not really worth his asking price unless you're doing the Magic cap glitch
Doesn't that glitch revolve around buying him for his cheapest price?
I used Hugh in two of my normal mode playthroughs, and he was equally as good as Lugh and Lilina. All three of them are solid units. Although maybe I just got lucky in those two playthroughs cause I'm surprised to hear that his growths aren't great.
Missed opportunity to talk about the Hugh money glitch :c
A week late but fancy seeing you here :o
@@michaellevin664 Same saaaame o:
I've always gotten Rennac in Sacred Stones, (using La'Rachel) but by that time I've groomed Colm for the rouge class. So I get him but immediately Bench him.
If you bought the guide book for the game back in the day, it basically tells you to use La’Rachel to recruit him, never mentions the option of paying for him. So that’s how I always recruit the bum. But like you, I train up Colm.
5:36 He's in Grado castle, not Renais castle.
Thing about Shura, he doesn't begin as an Outlaw, he's an Adventurer when you recruit him.
But anyways, great video man.
Don't forget Xavier from Thracia.
The cost: your sanity.
Japanese slang nickname for Shura is ブーツさん
(Būtsu-san...i.e. boots or mr.
Kind of like Tactics Ogre, where every unit except Destin's has a deployment cost.
(FE3H CF/Edelgard route spoilers)
I wish killing Claude in CF gave you Failnaught and/or boots, just to provide a material incentive for trying that choice out.
Lmfao, tbh I would probably pick the boots, sorry but boots are just so good.
Trick question, it’s all of the characters from Three houses, as it is the most expensive at retail price!
Is everyone forgetting about Gaius? He was recruited over some sweets... 😅
Also the generics in the DS shadow dragon that require a certain death count of your own units
(Source: BigKlingy)
Edit: Realized after writing that this was already in the video, whoops.
I didn't even realize Rennac charged a fee.
Yeah same I was always using L'Rachel because I too have a soft spot for her, and her lines are always hilarious
The thing is, Beowolf's wage is still on the player's side because of how fe4 works, while the others just eat what you pay them or something.
Where are you Rennac Gang???
Shura is a cool character, and he has a pretty good staff rank in a game where proficiency rank takes forever to upgrade.
I totally forgot about Conquest ch16’s gold mechanic, that’s so clever and I wish I had time to play Conquest again.
I think I’ve always kept Shura even without using him, because I just don’t want to kill characters
I didn't even know you could pay Rennac. I always just took him up with L'Arachel lol.
Such characters do round things out in a world. The lack of such in Awakening might be a nod to perhaps the different atmosphere of the area (now and back in Marth's days).
I didn’t even know Rannuc could be paid, I just went directly to him with L’arachel and recruited him
Seeing these comments, now I want a video on dlc recruitable units.
@@Faerghast I did not know that, the more you know I guess.
@@Faerghast noooo I liked that glitch it didn't ruin the game
When Shura gets added to FEH I hope he comes with Odd or Even Tempest (a skill that increases movement on odd/even turns).... so I can kill him for boots!
Given that I'm a filthy casual that only started at Awakening, Shura is the only character on this list that I know.
@@korinoriz we need more Xavier recruitments
@@korinoriz at first, i was wondering why you considered 8 one of the darker games. after some thinking, i remembered that one character is all but directly stated to be a necrophile
I love Volke. Every time Lethality activated in RD it was the coolest thing.
Shura had those Jordans to die for
Ah, this was interesting! I’ve played several of these, but I still learned a lot here. As for me, I could never take the boots for Shura’s life, regardless of whether I intend to touch him at all. Say what you will, I really like to immerse and let my morals play a part in such decisions!
I think it would be way funnier if Rennac turned into an enemy if L'Arachel tries to recruit him lol
I don’t think I’d be able to play Fire Emblem because I would get too attached to everyone and try to collect all of the characters
Then cry when they die
That happens to me too, every time I play a Fire Emblem game for the first time I always do the "No deaths" thing.
However by my 2nd or 3rd playthrough I'm always like
"Whoops healer died lol"
You don’t have to play classic. Don’t let them bully you into thinking you have to.
@@b.f.2461 He’s right, classic is for casual chumps. Real champs exclusively play Phoenix mode. I will say Conquest looses a little something on casual mode though. Take that with a grain of salt.
@@Zek3nator it’s a game. You play it on whatever setting you enjoy most.
Shura be looking like Nameless from King of Fighters.
That's probably the best comparison I've ever seen.
I picked Shura even though it would be really funny if Corrin murdered someone for footwear in the story
Almost forgot about Rennac because I think he was the only one who died in my playthrough when doing that post game area place (or something of the sort.
Shura’s my boy. I don’t think I’ve ever killed him.
At least the FE6 Illian and Lycian Mercenaries are explained by being paid off already by Hector and Eliwood.
TIME FOR MY MAN HUGH TO SHINE
Loved the video, but I believe Rennac is in the Grado Keep in Ephraim's route, not Castle Renais.
We're all human.
It's been like months after the unification of Valentia. I still wanna know where my gold is
Kinda expected DLC units from Echoes and Three Houses to appear here.
they did Volke dirty in Path of Radiance
Beowulf is probably the cheapest of them
Kind of surprised that Gaius from Awakening and Saber from Echoes weren't brought up as honorable mentions.
Saber's case makes sense when you realise he's one of Celica's brothers, and is only testing her resolve, not actually asking for pay.
the most expensive fire emblem characters are anna from fates and anna from three houses. they're so expensive that you need to spend actual money to recruit them. that's pretty meta. it's also pretty on-brand.
Awesome Video! The only question left of my mind is:
what is the most expensive unit possible? Not just full characters but even Including buyable extra units like the Avatar log in Awakening or in fates. Where are the limits how expensive can you go?
Grado Keep is where you recruit Rennac on Ephirams route
“I feel we ought to spare Shura.”
“Eyyo but he got them Jordans tho.”
I'm a little disappointed you didn't mention the Hugh glitch. I wasn't too keen on him either but then he randomly capped his magic and skill in one level up. I had a ton of fun with that and it doesn't hurt that he's one of FE6's most entertaining characters.
“If you somehow don’t have enough Gold.” Rude (I didn’t have 3000 Gold so had to go back to sell some stuff)
-Ah, Beowulf, the original FE base breaker. He's okay, I mostly pay to recruit him for the sake of completionism but I've used him as a dad and the stats aren't bad. (Brigid/Beowulf is underrated, he can actually pass down Pursuit and a decent sword to Patty.)
-Farina may be my favorite Beowulf, she's a great character and well worth the money she costs.
I will never get over the fact that Shura doesn't have supports with Azura
i don't even use shura i just recruit him because he's epic
Good opinion
These scripted vids are so cool and interesting to listen to dude
