  • Welcome, one, welcome all. to the Most Hated Characters: Part 2! Featuring three Fire Emblem characters that fall under my intentionally broad and ever growing term of “most hated”: morally questionable, scummy, disliked within their own universe, notorious among the community and something more particular for this batch: Assholes. These three characters can’t help but tear into their allies and evaluate them when nobody asked. This video covers a some of a handful of characters that aren't your typical goodie two-shoes.
This video contains spoilers for the following Fire Emblem Titles: Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Fire Emblem: Fates

With Shinon while he is racist I feel he also just generally hates and is rude to most people, except for the few that earn his respect. It's just that due to his upbringing this comes out in the form of racism when talking to Laguz and more normal insults when it comes to Beorc. Also, I think part of the reason that cements his hatred for Ike is that he doesn't believe he's a proper replacement for Greil who he greatly respected, if Titania became leader of the Mercs he probably wouldn't have left. All these factors and his pride have cemented his hatred for Ike which will probably never change but despite that he does genuinely care for the Greil Mercs as a whole

Setsuna is, in my opinion, one of the best characters to demonstrate the "incompetent writing" that everyone says Fates has in terms of it's characters being "one dimensional". Sure, she may be funny in many scenarios, with how often she gets herself caught in random traps and her obliviousness causing her to misinterpret what other people say to her in hilarious fashion, but I feel that her supports get boring to read after a while since they all rely on the same punchlines I just mentioned. She also never really develops, either, and just comes across as the kind of person who is more so a liability to everyone else around her in spite of her supposedly being good with a bow and arrow; which actually makes a good segway into the fact that I think that she is, rather unsurprisingly, probably the single worst unit in birthright as well

I loved Azama for a number of reasons.
      1. War is messy, and you’re sometimes forced to make uneasy alliances. I thought Azama really portrayed that kind of culture shock well, just as well if not better than most Nohr/Hoshido supports.
      2. His carefree nature was refreshing in a game with so many characters concerned about trivial matters. It made him oddly jovial and fun.
      3. It’s important to never surround yourself with “yes-men”. Criticism and judgement, especially in times where failure is not an option, is not a flaw. Honest feedback is important for any kind of growth and improvement. Azama’s a bubble burster, and I think that’s a positive trait, one that can’t be easily sugar coated.

Yeah but that doesn't do jack shit. Redacted doesn't give a damn. He is too stuck in his own mind to care. If anything, Felix is making him worse by further fueling his self-hatred. To Felix he isn't human (or he refuses to call him one); Redacted doesn't see himself as one either. To Felix he is a killer and beyond help; Redacted feels exactly the same. Felix enables him in a way I feel nobody ever points out. He fuels the monster that is acting and destroying the person that used to be his friend. You are purposely cherry-picking and coloring information to make Felix look worse. He doesn’t *think* Dimitri is a monster, he watched Dimitri be a monster by enjoying slaughtering people, a fact Dimitri doesn’t dispute. Felix is right about Dimitri until later in the story, but even still he doesn’t truly give up on Dimitri. He was right about Dedue too. Dedue admits he’d senselessly massacre children and his comrades if ordered. Felix is the only person who realizes how messed up Dimitri is and how has and could lead to so many deaths. I’d hate Dimitri and Dedue if I was him. He’s pissed everyone treats it like it’s normal. He’s afraid everyone he cares about will kill innocent people. For vengeance, for their people, for the knightly concepts of loyalty and chivalry. Felix only seems like the asshole because Dimitri never goes as dark as he very reasonably could have in these timelines. Felix hates death. So he trains harder than anyone else (except maybe Leonie) to prevent it, and if Dimitri had gone down darker paths, he’d have to kill him. The strongest human on the planet and one of his best friends.
TL:DR Felix witnessed a mass murder as a 15 year old, has to be around the mass murderer all the time, is reasonably in a bad mood about it.

One thing I always liked about the Tellius games is how they actually show a deep spectrum of behavior within the core themes in their world. It's a lot harder to hate Shinon for being an ignorant, antagonistic jerk when you compare him to an actual monster like Izuka, for example. You know both of them are in the wrong, and on similar issues, but it's hard to compare someone who's just an asshole to an actual war criminal who'd give real-life Nazis a run for their money.
As another example, there are any number of radicalized Daein map bosses to compare Jill to, and realize that the simple act of opening herself up to the possibility she might be wrong was actually a pretty remarkable thing to do. Comparing Jill to Petrine, as a specific example, shows that even though both of them were radicalized, one of them had the courage to question herself, while the other was a coward to the end, delighting in the misery of others just to deny her own insecurities.
And Tellius gives us both sides of the coin: for every comparison that flatters characters like Jill and Shinon, there's also an unflattering one: a Zihark or an Ike to compare them against, so that you also realize that even though they may not have the absolute worst character traits, they've got a long way to go to actually being good people. I really think that the shades of grey Tellius paints are underestimated. It's something I never see Tellius get enough credit for, and just thought it was worth mentioning here.

    • @The_Evening_Sun
      @The_Evening_Sun 3 ปีที่แล้ว +67

Tellius also portrays that casual Racism applies on both sides of the spectrum, many of the Laguz at times have been shown to somewhat look down on the Beorc as weaker. It also displays the disparity between different kinds of racism such as Shinon's Racism where he'll say offensive crap but not actually do anything, as compared to the racism of the begnion army where Laguz hunting is treated almost like a sport.

@@cyrusblackthorn7222 It's funny that if you actually look at a drawn up journey of the routes in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, PoR travels around the perimeter of the continent, while Radiant Dawn usually focuses on the interior.
Also, Shinon may be a racist but I'd also say that he dislikes Soren because he's a branded, and considering he also has a personal grudge against Ike just cause he hates Ike's guts and such make him part of that most hated group.
Though to me, it's kinda hard to hate him when you see how much Rolf respects him, especially since Rolf had a sick father and a mother who left. Shinon filled in for that in a way, and Rolf really felt attached to him, and Shinon says this too, "I like watching you, kid, I like seeing you shoot better every day... Then someday I can point at you and tell prople 'that's the best student I ever had.' Which is when Shinon gives Rolf the Silencer, one of the more powerful bows in the game, designed by Shinon to give to Rolf.

Someone I've noticed who's been catching a lot of flack recently is Hilda. And honestly, it feels like Launch Ingrid discourse. People absolutely slamming her, calling her racist for her C support with Cyril and complaint about her laziness.
It's a shame because like most of the characters in 3H, she's not a bad person for unfounded reasons and it's not like she doesn't develop. But for some reason people just don't have the tolerance or understanding they do with Hilda as they do other characters.
Her prejudices are only present in a single C conversation and she's worked through them by the A, but even then so many people seem to forget that the Almyrans are literally functionally Vikings, try to kill her brother and invade Leister for fun constantly, conscript prepubesent child soldiers and just in general completely justify and reinforce the stigma against them. She has one support chain with the only Almyran she's ever seen who isn't trying to murder her closest family member (she doesn't know Claude's Almyran), the fact that she says stuff along the lines of "Wow, you're far better than most Almyrans" is completely fair and honestly a very tame reaction.
And in regards to her laziness, crushing expectations and feeling of not wanting to do anything because you feel like you'll disappoint everyone is like, the core of her character and completely justified considering her brother is possibly the strongest man in her country. "Man she's so lazy I hate her" rings so hollow to me after actually reading her supports, yet I see it all too often. It's a typical case of not getting the issue so minimising how bad it is, basically most Hilda detractors I see just say "suck it up" or "who cares she's still horrible" and I'm like man, where's that energy with literally anybody else in the roster? Probably because other character struggle with either trauma, clear mental illness, class issues or grief, which is far easier to understand and more relatable. People who don't have imposter syndrome probably aren't gonna take it seriously, to them it's "just an excuse to be lazy" because instead of hearing voices or breaking down crying, she procrastinates and overrelies on others due to not having faith in herself.
It's a real shame her honestly great character flies under the radar so often because she's got a nice rack and rough exterior.
No idea why I wrote all this out, just kinda wanted to put why I like Hilda to writing and considering how often she's disliked a vid about hated FE characters seemed the right place.

Look at what happens with most other people in support chains. They believe in chivalry/knighthood, they bother him when he is training, they risk their lives for him, or they just don't leave him alone when he wants to be alone l. Annette doesn't do any of that. He approached her and complimented her about her singing and dancing as well he has a thing for girls who can sing. Even when she did approach him he wasn't bothered by her as she wasn't interrupting him training or him wanting to be alone.

Felix is definitely an asshole, but I will say that most of the time his evaluations of others aren't actually wrong. Or at least not totally wrong. In addition to his initial evaluations, he does discover that there is more to them than what he initially observes.
Dorothea's reason for being at Garreg Mach was to find a suitable husband, and when Felix assumes that she's is interested in him because he's the heir to house Fraldarius, Dorothea words her way around it, but never totally denies it. He later realizes that she's more aware of the realities of the world than he thought, and while he seems to be pretty oblivious to girls' feelings, hopefully he also figures out that while she is looking for a wealthy husband, she also wants someone sincere who sees her for who she is.
His deduction that Dedue is blindly obedient to Dimitri isn't totally wrong either. Dedue would follow nearly any order issued to him by Dimitri unquestioningly. However Felix realizes later on that part of his reason for doing so is to help Dimitri achieve his goals no matter the personal sacrifice Dedue must make.
Felix's statements towards Ingrid come more out of concern for her life. He knows what has happened to knights who valued chivalry and pride over everything else, and he sees Ingrid following that path as well. He doesn't want her to follow a path that will get herself killed. He calls her out for romanticizing blind obedience, which Ingrid doesn't deny, and she later decides that she should follow her own beliefs rather than blind loyalty to a superior.
With Ashe, his evaluations of tales of chivalry aren't wrong either. Tales of chivalry romanticize and glorify war and often, if not always, leave out its true horrors. Because of these tales of chivalry, Ashe's perspective on the world was very idealistic, making him naive to the underlying darknesses in other people. Felix's point isn't to say that Ashe should give up on tales of chivalry entirely, only that he shouldn't draw so heavily on them when looking at the world.
The one example I will agree with is his assumption about Leonie. He flat out underestimated her, and it cost him. It served as a humbling moment for him, and gave him an opportunity to reflect on some of his weaknesses. His remark that she's "impressive for a girl," is more just his back handed way of giving compliments, and they banter back and forth. I'd say that through his support with Leonie, Felix found his ideal training partner.
Like it is stated in the video, Felix's evaluations of others aren't 100% correct, however it should be noted that most of the time they aren't flat out wrong either.

I think one thing you kind of missed in the Felix support is how much he views, and is made to view, himself as an outsider. A lot of his problems I think stemmed from the fact that not only he never healthily dealt with his Glenn's death, but the way that others dealt with Glenn's death and the tragedy in general made them feel cold to him. Without anyone non-patriotic to comfort him all he was surrounded with after his death was all that chivalry stuff and him seeing Dmitri get socially rewarded for coping (ie masking his feelings) while he could see he was suffering the same as himself really would of just made him feel that people weren't respecting his feelings which he turned into bitterness. Even M'Dmitri post war phase would annoy him with the amount of outward concern he got for his character change when Felix probably interpenetrated he get none when he lashes out. He is just a perfect storm of emotions that means he is kind of justified not letting people in while all the while not letting people in is preventing him from moving on in life which makes it really sweet when you get glimpses of it showing through his A supports. Probably one of my favourite characters in the game, and I agree with most stuff you talked about him, and he is just a really fleshed out edgeman that fits in with the world really well.

12:25 is he though? Dorothea generally is seen trying to marry into nobility, as much as I love him Dedue IS nothing but a blind loyal dog when it comes to Dimitri, and Ingrid was trying to follow in Glen's footstep, a path which ended up in death, something which he doesn't want to happen to her; he's seen first hand the brutal, vicious, savage and sadistic side of Dimitri when they were quelling a rebellion and that sight must have horrified Felix (and heck, Dimitri essentially BECAME what Felix said about him for most of Azure Moon)
As for his worldview regarding chivalry and self sacrifice in general....I get it. Look at this from his perspective: his older brother, who he loved and admired greatly, died in a massacre that left only Dimitri alive. So obviously he must be grieving, he's vulnerable, mourning his brother's death and he's in need of comfort And what does his father do to comfort him? He tells his son to be proud of Glen because "he died like a true knight". His older brother is gone and he can never come back, and his own father tries to make a beautiful thing out of it, something to be praised and admired (Heck, Dimitri himself says there was no beautiful death to be found that day, it was purely a massacre, with Glen's face contorted with pain). Those words did little to comfort him. In fact, they had the exact opposite effect. So because of this, Felix not only begins to hate his father, but also chivalry in general. He sees it as people needlessly sacrificing themselves when they should be placing their own lives first, and the romanticization of that idea sickens him even more because he feels like it's trying to make out of death a beautiful thing, something to be admired and an example to follow, just like his father. He just wants people to live, and that if there's a reason to fight, it should be to live.
His opinion on chivalry is purely subjective, based on his own personal feelings, but he does have some valid points regarding of ugly side of it: regular people HAVE a romanticized idea about what it means to be a knight because of books and such, and those same people may decide to follow that path without truly knowing what it entails. People THINK dying for your country is romantic and such, but who knows how many of those people would still feel the same when faced with death. And heck, knighthood is not all protecting the innocents and the weak; sometimes your lord orders you to quell a peasants rebellion that are only revolting because of the lord's mistreatment. Knighthood can instill good values like devotion and protecting the weak, but it also promotes more nasty stuff like dying for "king and country"

Sure, he's bummed out for a while with how Dimitri died, wondering if he could have done something to save him, but other than that there really isn't much for him to turn into a self deprecating man that seeks death on the battlefield like in Crimson Flower, where he absolutely loathes himself for what he has become: a traitor to his own country, committer of patricide, killer of his friends, a hypocrite no different than he boar he was chastizing all those years ago; but he keeps moving forward nonetheless

I find it odd to call a character like Felix edgy in the first place, sure on a surface level he has that "edgy anime swordsman" kind of feel, but his character is literally defined by feeling that people's lives are of upmost importance, I feel that in order for a character to be edgy, they should have to have a flaggrant disregard of lives, just the opposite of Felix's views.

The issue with Felix isn't that he is wrong but that he expresses his observations in an unoproductive way. There is also the structural issue that he is by default member of a route that operates against his personal values. Azure Moon believes in all these ideals he despises.

I think it's worth mentioning that the Shinon base convo also features him getting hung up over Greil's death. That ire towards Ike could also be fueled by living in the shadow of the one dude he respected and is still grieving over. IIRC, there's also an RD base convo where he raises some money by selling bows for the mercs. Ike finds out and him and Aimee ponder over the weirdly kind action.
Then of course there's Rolf who is trained and even given a prf weapon by the dude.

I can't speak for the other two, but Felix has a right to be angry, seeing as he lost his brother, and then had to sit there hearing from his father and everyone else how "great a death" Glenn had. One can imagine that he couldn't ever discuss that topic with his father, because his father is um... who he is. Chivalrous. He really has no reason to be nice or open up to others, save for Slyvain, who occasionally flusters Felix for reminding him of the person he used to be. Someone weak who would run up to Slyvain "crying" and who looked up to Slyvain as a big brother. Felix, I think, is in such a dark place in his mind that he really tries to convince himself that the optimistic and justice-loving masses are weaker than himself, because they glorify death; and tries at every chance he has to dehumanize himself, as he feels it's disrespecting the memory of his brother.

A lot of support conversations in the series are written as the two characters antagonizing each other and then coming to a compromise. Having prickly characters kind of just makes it easier to write these, I imagine.
I think in Shinon's case, he's a guy who is skeptical of any human contact and will come up with any excuse to not interact with people. His racism seems like it isn't so much about "beorc>laguz" as it is "this is a convenient excuse to not interact with a big chunk of people on the continent."
Felix is actually usually trying to help people when he antagonizes them, because he has genuine feelings about things that don't matter and things that do matter. He vastly underrates the worth of loyalty, but his existence actually seems to have a positive impact overall, helping people to remember the value of things not of a social nature but of a human one.
Azama is a "people explorer." He's an asshole to try to gauge reactions from people. He's like Bugs Bunny, or that guy who made phone videos of himself roasting random people in public. He takes insult with the veneer of politeness that people hold and wants to get under it and experience "the real you" without earning your trust. I would have big personal issues with someone like Azama to the point where I'd have to confront them at some point.

I agree with Azama and Shinon. Felix? Not so much.
That dude just lost his brother, which he loved more than anything, but instead of support from his father he gets a glorification of his death. And he didnt hate Dimitri for surviving the massacre, but for lying and pretending to be someone he's not. He just saw his best friend slaughter soldiers during the rebellion with a smile on his face and the next time he saw he acted as he didnt just went super phsycho? I wouldn't trust him either. I agree that he goes to far with Dimitri (verbal abuse us not cool) but remember, he's traumatized.
Not continuing towards his, apparently false, accusations.
    1) He's not actually wrong about Dorothea, that girl practically screams about her search for a rich noble to support her. And did she outright deny the claim that she was interested in him, in the beginning? And she is totally not word wise. She knows a lot, growing up in the streets will teach you something, but she is also horrible naive about how nobility works ( Ferdinand support) and just assumes they all are the same.
    2) Dedue confessed that he would kill innocent people and CHILDREN on Dimitris Command, no questions asked.
That sounds like a "royal rabid dog" to me. Yes he has more depths to his loyalty. But in the core of the matter I would not call him wrong.
    3) Ingrid, oh Ingrid. She is the literall humanization of what he hates the most, ultimate loyalty and chivalry. And even though he shows some really unpleasant traits ( sexism is not cool) he too is right to some degree. Later Ingrid confesses that she couldn't not blindly follow orders, a fault which will kill her on the path she is set to go. And she too comes to the conclusion that she should fight for her own beliefs instead of trying to copy them.
    4) Ashe, the media has power, even in the middle ages. The true horrors of war are glossed over, blinding many young people, which leads to them throwing their life away. And yes Felix did not have to bitch at Ashe so hard ( its still just a book) the core of the matters correct: don't underestimate the horrors of war.
Leonie is just a fault of Felix, can't defend him there.
Still I don't agree with how wrong he was made out in the video, just my opinion though.

I think Felix hating Dimitri is out of fear than hate. He knows how insane Dimitri can be, and since he witnessed that insanity when he was young that could result in trauma.
And even before time skip, he knows the 'boar' side still resides in Dimitri. So he keeps his distance to him because to Felix, Dimitri is a ticking time bomb that's ready to go off at any moment.
So in conclusion, I think Felix still thinks of Dimitri as a friend, but is cautious and resentful because he thinks Dimitri is a wolf pretending to be a lamb.

I might get a little flack for this, but Azama, while absolutely an asshole, has one unintentionally redeeming thing about him. When he's criticizing the others within the Fates cast, he's often times correct. Yes, he is a bully. Yes, his criticisms are usually unwarranted with rare exception. But he is right, even if he is a jerk about it. But he's only right about this because of the world he's been placed into the characters he's criticizing. Put that same character into a better written cast, and he's just some jerk who gets his kicks from bringing down others.

I don't know if you'll decide to do a part 3 later on, but if I can make a nomination for a hated character (At least a character I hate, lots of people love him so this'll be an unpopular opinion), I'd like to suggest Niles. When I played Revelation and I got Niles, I had THE hardest time trying to support him with other female characters (I ship mostly on dynamic, so I'll have characters with meh or poor stats) because he's just an asshole to mostly everyone (with the exception of a small number like Azura, but I sure as hell wasn't going to marry her to him, and I already shipped her with Subaki based on my Birthright run). He purposely likes hurting people and messing with them physically and emotionally, and what especially pissed me off was his support with Camilla; he tried to pull the whole "Well you're a princess so you're privileged and you only love Corrin for your own emotional benefit" and she straight-up suplexes him with her past (that he wasn't entitled to, by the way, it was none of his business). Even when he tries to "apologize" to her, he goes straight to his masochism fetish and she leaves him groveling without giving him any satisfaction.
And he's a shitty father to Nina. Literally dumps her in the DeepRealm while barely checking on her and not even noticing she left, and in their A-support claims he didn't want her living the same life he did while at the same time not being the father he should have been if he was serious. His reasoning was that he was trying to protect her from the war, but if he really wanted to do that and be a dad at the same time, he could have been like Silas or Laslow or Subaki.

Yeah. Azama is a bully, and a huge pain to find an S-support for. So it was with a certain level of smug satisfaction that I paired him with Setsuna in my first playthrough of Birthright, for what I saw as her unintentionally putting him in his place.
I also did something similar with Felix where I made him my Dancer in my first Blue Lions playthrough despite his begging to not be selected. I was also completely floored when he and Dimitri shared a paired ending. Like, he went from "boar" to missing him even more than the queen. D'aaawwwww!

i like felix a lot, he’s probably one of my favourites in the entire cast. he’s abrasive and rude on the surface but it generally stems from a place of care when he’s talking to his friends. he was a child who cried a lot and was never afraid to show his feelings, but after the tragedy of duscur and losing his brother whom he loved more than anything, witnessed atrocities and became disillusioned with the concept of knighthood and chivalry - the very ideals he looked up to all his life - he transformed into someone who tended to bottle his feelings up behind a veneer of cold apathy. rather than being the lone wolf cliche, his past puts his words and actions into context, and i enjoy seeing him grow and warm up to others in his support conversations.

I think felix’s attitude is at least somewhat justified compared to shinon and especially Azama. a lot of his cold behavior to ingrid is him caring about her and not wanting her to throw her life away for dimitri. I don't really buy the dedue support a lot because it relies on him saving his life offscreen, but I will concede that he is too harsh there. I think hes accurate with sylvain and is actually gets him to train instead of talking to girls in their support. most of his behavior stems from how he was shaken by dimitri's suppression of the rebellion and how he detests the theme of chivalry, but i think the latter shows him being caring for his friends, as he doesn't want them to throw their life away for others, especially dimitri. Not trying to say you were wrong tho this video was great and i think you highlighted some very interesting points especially with shinon. Keep up the great work and have a nice day!

I gotta say, Jakob is kind of an asshole at times too. There were times where I wanted to fire him as my butler because he was just plain rude to the others. As for Felix, I always did like him. I had trouble really understanding why he detested Dimitri until their A support where I realized that he was still really lost and confused as to what happened to his childhood friend. A big part of his character is that the past changed him permanently and unlike Dimitri, he was the realist that acted as a foil to Dimitri with how he was always in his own head and focused on the hate he feels for himself. I always saw him as an effective foil for Dimitri because he went through the Tragedy of Duscur and came out the opposite. Even so, he was still very much hurt over losing his brother and for Dimitri turning into a savage when he suppressed the rebellions in Faerghus. That was what made me realize how important Felix is to Dimitri and to Faerghus overall. But until I got to that A support all I had to tell him was "Leave Dimitri alone! Leave him alone!"

    • @Underworlder5

i agree with most of what you said, but i have to make a minor correction. felix was never in the tragedy of duscur. he was certainly affected by it, but he never witnessed it himself. the trauma comes from learning his brother died, and his father glorifying said death. dimitri witnessed the massacre firsthand, and ended up severely mentally damaged because of it. felix is still sane, just bitter

I always had the feeling that Felix isn't a bad character, just REALLY infuriating sometimes!
It's understandable that he might resent the thoughts of knighthood, as he sees it as the pointless "faith" that killed someone close to him, and i can fully understand how he has come to project those feelings on others...
He keeps people at arms length, afraid to let anyone get close, as he is obviously TERRIFIED of losing someone again, and he never allows himself to admit how close he feels to someone, as he not only already lost someone, but loses his dad too for what seems like the same reason, affirming his beliefs in his own eyes.
I think what Felix resents the most isn't the idea of sacrificing yourself for someone else or your beliefs, as he has no problems with stepping in to save someone else, but more that he hates it when someone does it without thinking of the loved ones they leave behind, and how they put everything on them to deal with the fallout because they "stuck to their belief".
What makes Felix infuriating to me is that he doesn't seem to understand that the thing he hates the most, is something he does without even noticing it! In a few of his supports he puts himself in mortal danger to save someone else, relying on his skills to not actually be in danger when he does it, but completely overlooks that if he slipped up or got caught by surprise, he would have died for the same reason he hates the thought of knighthood... He is basicly a walking contradiction, dismissing ideas and ideals, that he actually lives by without realizing it!
