Enough time has passed that the Academy has spoken and more importantly, all of the other TH-camrs have made their best of 2023 lists. So I wanted to chime in with five movies that I don't see on many such lists but should.

I should have mentioned it but I did talk about DnD this year already in my Who should direct the first MCU X-Men movie video.
TMNTMM goes hard af. It's like claymation and a teenager's doodles mixed together.
If you like seeing the Jackie Chan style done in animation the LEGO Ninjago movie might be worth checking out. It has a similar style of action and was also coordinated by Jackie Chan as he plays a very similar role to splinter in that movie as well.
Except that movie's pretty dull with childish jokes, inconsistent animation, and everyone except Lloyd and his father being flat and one-dimensional
Theater Camp is one of my favs from last year. One of my film students during a summer film program was in the film. We all went together as a class to see it with him; oddly enough, we went on 7/27 which is the exact day of the Joan musical takes place.
I, too, loved Mutant Mayhem. I think the changes to Splinter’s character were wonderful. The TMNT franchise can survive reinventions to its characters in ways that other franchises don’t.
The soundtrack of it was also absolutely banging. The second I heard Ante Up, I knew this film was going to try something new.
Blackberry was such a sleeper hit for me, I ended up watching that movie 3 times the week it came out

I came here to say this. Especially with criticizing some truly fantastic costuming work. They got worse later on, but the costumes from that movie were and are a marvel of technology and performance art.
I don't understand the point you are trying to make. The turtles have an abysmal track record movie wise until this one. That is exactly what he is saying

I only knew about Mutant Mayhem because it was on the box when I got Pizza Hut, but it was amazing!
"It was on the box when I got Pizza Hut" is the single best AND the single most 90's way of being made aware of a TMNT movie, and nobody can convince me otherwise. 🤣

The Weekly Planet guys said Russell Crowe's Greek accent for Love and Thunder was a very specific accent you hear from Greek people in Australia. I'm guessing it's the same with his Italian accent.
It's basically an impression of Con the Fruiterer, who's a comedy character from a Greek-Australian sketch show in the 80s/90s.
I know you said Jennifer Lawrence has never done a movie like No Hard Feelings before, but she did win her Best Actress award as the lead in a rom-com (although it sounds like this leaned more heavily into the "com" side of things than Silver Linings Playbook did)
Yeah SLP feels like more of a Dramedy than a Rom Com but it's definitely closer than most of her work.

The best part of the Pope exorcist is the goof up they had with the inquisition.
Instead of the real world symbol, they didn't double check and used the Inquisition emblem from Dragon Age XD
Dude the old TMNT movie is FANTASTIC, it is literally the opposite of "bad costumes"

THANK YOU for that No Hard Feelings appreciation!!! Somehow it was one of my favourite movies of 2023, and sometimes I feel like I’m the only person who actually liked it. Partly because I’m already incredibly biased towards JLaw and ABF, but also just because I had an absolute blast catching a spontaneous 9 pm summer night showing with some of my closest friends. It’s such a fun movie and I have a blast with it every time

I just wanted to mention recently on the lead up to deadpool3 me and my wife rewatched all the X-movies in release order (many of which she had never seen)
It was a great experience however I will say I expected x2 and First Class to be highlights. They are not. IMO they really don’t hold up as well as some other films in the series and some actually fair better on a rewatch. Apocalypse is still terrible.
I would love to see you rewatch these movies either on this channel or your podcast to see how you feel about them on a revisit.

Love your number one pick! I absolutely loved this movie! It's definitely the most underrated movie of the year by far. I've watched it 3 times, and every time, it feels like the first and can't help but smile throughout the whole movie.
Calling the 1990 tmnt costumes horrible is a horrible take but glad u enjoyed mm! Great vid as always dude
It's gotta be an editing mistake. Nando isn't always right, and I sure don't always agree with him, but *intentionally* calling the original 1990 costumes bad? That would be so bafflingly ignorant as to put his credibility into doubt. The second and third movies had lackluster costumes but that first one was JHCW's best work to date.

May December was 100% snubbed. Portman and Melton should have been nominated. Portman's performance where she slowly mirrors Gracies mannerisms is creepy!

John Wick 4 was EASILY my favorite of the year. My jaw was on the floor the entire movie, best action scenes I have seen in years. Also Godzilla minus one really is amazing!

is it weird that in that whole movie i kept thinking that matthew broderick was supposed to be jennifer lawrences father, but they cut that story from the movie? I mean it fits perfectly with her backstory, and his backstory at the end, basically he says it right out. and she says it when recounting her mother's tale of meeting her father.

Probably my favorite comedy of 2023 was Joyride, it missed a lot of people's radar(mine as well but my gf wanted to see it) but it has easily some of the funniest moments I've seen in modern day comedies
Have you seen Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2? I feel like Dichen Lachman's Jiaying is kind of a decent adaptation of Magneto but for Inhumans

here's my IMDB review of the TMNT movie (9/10):
*Do yourself a favor and see this in 3D if you can*
What a total surprise, the 3D was outstanding and popped more than usual. The characters and art assets looked fully rounded out, there was a lot of effort put into framing the foreground and background elements to give them a lot of depth.
I grew up collecting the original graphic novels and watching the show, but every franchise project afterward merely felt derivative and did nothing for me. Tonight, I started with low expectations, but decided to give it a chance as I felt like watching a new 3D animated film on my VR headset.
I'm glad to see the Spiderverse urban influence feeling appropriate, as though giving the artists the architecture and vocabulary for this movie to exist.

While I thought TMNT was just a fine movie. It was movie during the the strike I felt bad for. Mostly for the kids.

I don’t understand the love of mutant mayhem. They got Splinter wrong, just like in Rise. And to pair him with scumbug? What? And then the last minute change scumbug’s gender to soften it or whatever, is also weird. 2012 remains the best TMNT in my eyes.

@@TheEvilCheesecake not a soul. Disliked the design as soon as it was revealed and a simple summary of his actions in the film Seth Rogan’s comments about parenting made it clear this one wasn’t for me, or my kids. Splinter as a devoted Dad is a key element of the TMNT and that’s not an angle Rogan understands and there was no need to make him look so goofy.
If you don't like Rise Splinter at first, I suggest power through the first few episodes* as he definitely gets better over time
* or if you don't care about spoilers, I can just tell you what happens
