The Authority is inexplicably the subject of the second DC Universe movie after Superman Legacy, so we ask in this series, Who should play those characters and also who are they? We've got the last three in this video, The Engineer, The Doctor, and Swift. I also talk about one other character who I think might get added to the team.

Dan Stevens is capable of portraying complexity and intensity, which is essential for Manchester Black. His work on "Legion" means he can play a character dealing with psychic powers and moral ambiguities, much like Manchester Black. His experience in drama and action sequences, along with his ability to balance likability with an edgier side proves his potential to bring a certain unpredictability to Manchester Black, keeping audiences intrigued.
Dan Stevens was my pick for Constantine. Another British punk who smokes and plays loose with rules. Would love him as either.
Stevens is a great pick but he is also an actor I wouldn't want to waste in a limited appearance if he was willing to have a recurring role in the DCU. He could be a great choice for a lot of characters. He was amazing in Legion.
also he did The Guest, an action/slasher protagonist/villain, so he can do pretty much anything

I have loved these authority videos..I really appreciate how much thought you put into each casting and I actually learn more about the characters through that! Each fancast on this team has been SPOT ON!!
His examination of who the characters are and how they work is easily half of what I enjoy about these.
@@DanGibbins I don't learn actor names (or recognize them 90% of the time) so talking about "who" could play the character is worthless to me.
But these summaries of the characters and their deals is super interesting and just makes me more excited for these DC projects.

I’m really intrigued on how Superman Legacy is going to introduce all these characters to us. Most movie goers know the core Superman mythos, but are unfamiliar with Hawkgirl, much less the Authority. This is a lot of exposition that could bog down the film, and I wonder how much of it will be saved for their solo movie and how much of it will be included in Legacy.

You didn't mention him, but I think Taron Egerton would make a great Manchester Black. He's got the look down, and Eggsy has the perfect British punk energy for that character.

Im guessing one of the reasons Nando didnt choose taron is because of his height, as he seems to have wanted a tall and lanky manchester.

The engineer costume could end up going the same way as Mystique, which could be anywhere from a CGI suit to painting her for 10 hours.
I have to say, these videos have made me really hyped for James’ DC movies. I had never heard of any of these guys before the movie was announced, now I’m kicking myself that I’m only hearing about them now
I'm hoping grifter will show up even if not apart of the team then just as a person who sticks around sometimes and helps out and could have some sort of relationship with one of the members either retcon him to be a sibling or could be in a relationship with a member but could be like a character who doesn't like working with others so he never helps on missions unless he's convinced
Knowing James he might show up in Like a show or something down the line like vigilante in peacemaker
I would love a running joke if people get Grifter and Red Hood confused in universe.

@@acemagalor2519 I mean id expect him to show up in the authority and honestly he could be pretty cool as like a loner character who maybe has trauma from his last team the wildcats getting killed and him being the only survivor but then him picking up in missions where he could be helpful and if the authority becomes a successful franchise he could join the team later on down the route maybe like nebula or rondhu from guardians of the Galaxy
@@SummerOtaku it would be a cool scene if the in a adaption of under the red hood batman gets misdirected into thinking that grifter was the one who killed all of the villains and the half way through the fight scene batman figures out he has the wrong guy

Given that Manchester Black was a clear satire of Jenny Sparks and the Authority, the idea of Superman: Legacy featuring the Elite, and then having Jenny Sparks recruit the redeemable members into the Authority, is hilarious to me and I hope it happens. Also given I was apparently the only one who ever thought Jack Hawksmoor was east Asian, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Angie was Hispanic, I remain convinced Lucifer's Aimee Garcia would be perfect.
Except we already know that none of The authority characters will be in Superman: Legacy. Gunn said so.
I dunno…the whole time you were talking about The Doctor, couldn’t help but not think of David Tennet in the role. Setting the doctor who thing aside, I think he’d fit right into a role like this beautifully.
I also think he could rock a Manchester Black.

Hes porbably out of the age range now (44) but when Nando was describing Manchester Black as the quintessential Brit, I immediately thought of Paul Anderson (Arthur Shelby on Peaky Blinders). Havent read any Manchester Black comics but he plays absolutely batsh*t crazy very well.

As you were listing off the important points for Manchester Black, I kept thinking to myself "This sounds like a job for Alfie Allen," and yet he wasn't even mentioned. He's British, in his mid 30s, and capable of being both supremely cocky and *intensely* unlikeable. Seems like a perfect fit for him.
When you mentioned considering a Game Of Thrones actor for The Doctor, my mind immediately went to Alfie Allen. He could knock it out of the park and portray the sensitivity, self consciousness, and loser-ish attitude you’re looking for.
Alfie Allen was my choice for Manchester Black in a Superman vs The Elite film.
I mean for the Engineer, to make it flow-y let's take a page from that JL rewrite where Cyborg's whole body is moving around like a Rubik's cube. Instead, maybe she can have nano bots that goes around her body treating her body like a city. Perfect for comedy stuff or lighthearted scenes plus it can explain how she produce her Nanobot clones.
James Marsters kinda played a similar character as Spike on Buffy back in the day. Tom Ellis would be awesome too.

Have you seen The Servant or Knock at the Cabin? From your description, I totally got Rupert Grint for the Doctor, total weird neurotic red head. He is very picky about projects but maybe with the tight director he’d give it a go

i think Ayo Edebiri would play a perfect engineer she has that friendly nerdy energy but can also be serious when she needs to be exactly like her character on The Bear
Dr. Angela Spica is Puerto Rican. She is from the Bronx New York. So that means she’s Latino. The actress from Morbius is a great choice, although I think she’s Cuban but it’s fine.
Joseph Gilgun as Manchester Black is perfect casting
He might be a bit older, but whenever I read Manchester black, the voice i hear is ewan mcgregor from Trainspotting.

First of all this is a great fan cast BUT for the doctor I would have casted Matthias Schweighofer from Army Of The Thieves as the Doctor, when you said Dutch and messy I instantly thought of him. He’s a great actor and he look exactly like the Doctor I hope they cast him.

Joseph Quinn and Taron Egerton are two I would really like as Manchester Black, who I also theorize will be apart of the team in this movie. Wouldn’t be surprised if they more Elite members to the team. Watch Monaghan in Gotham and Shameless and I could absolutely see him as the Doctor. Daniel Radcliffe is someone I could see as The Doctor also.

So I saw that and I'm not convinced that means these characters won't be in Superman Legacy. I think they just may not be called "The Authority" yet. Also, he might be lying.

I really liked your choices here but when you were fancasting Manchester black, you forgot to incorporate that he’s from Manchester. This would require Black to have a pretty distinct accent that sincerely doubt that any of the actors you named could pull off.
for the engineer i can really see Greta Lee. She’s very age fluid and passable for someone late 20s-early 40s. She can play the kind loving friend as we’ve seen in Past Lives, but isn’t afraid to be an angry almost petty yet disturbed charecter in Problemista and The Morning Show. and if they want to play her very bubbly and fun Spiderverse and Russian Doll show she can do that. I have no idea if she speaks english or can do an english accent but Audrey Tatou of Amelie fame also comes to mind.
On the subject of Angie's costume, it wouldn't be much worse than mystique in the x-men movies. I'm sure if Gunn wants the og comics look he'll go for it.

Would love to see you fancast John Varley’s Titan, Wizard , Demon trilogy. How no streaming service has discovered this series yet is beyond me! The lead character was clearly based on Ripley from Alien, and I think Sigourney could have played her even as late as Cabin in the Woods era, but it’s now 15-ish years later. Also of all the rest of the characters, I’m curious who you would cast in the ‘Gaea’ role? I would give up being an atheist if I could see Oprah play that role!
Given you've done a video on who should direct the MCU's first X-Men film (fantastic vid btw), is there any chance you could give us some vids on who you think might be strong choices to direct DC's The Authority and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, since those are the only two announced Chapter 1 films that haven't confirmed their directors yet? (Gunn is obviously writing/directing Superman: Legacy, James Mangold is writing/directing Swamp Thing, and Andy Muschietti is directing The Brave and the Bold).
Personally I wouldn't be surprised if WB sought out Greta Gerwig for Supergirl given how successful Barbie is likely to be commercially and how well received it has been so far

so if i’m brit mistaken, it came out that the authority WONT be in superman legacy after all and the recent castings of hawkgirl, mr terrified guy gardner and metamorpho is the real newcomers. of course the authority will be im assuming after the writers strike. but they are confirmed now NOT to be appearing in legacy.

With how things have been flushing out in the industry over the last six month since Gunn was hired, I'd be _shocked_ if this movie ever sees the light of day. This Authority will be the first movie on the chopping block.

Clearly this man hasn’t seen enough of Cameron Monaghan’s roles. That man can play ANYONE.
I think that there’s a possibility of Gunn fusing Manchester Black and Jack Hawksmore into darker version of Manchester. I’d argue that Manchester Black is the more well known character and it would line the movie up with Superman and the Authority. I think that Mr. Terrific, Guy Gardner and HawkGirl are all going to be on the team as well. I don’t think that swift would make it into the movie. I could see a dynamic between Mr. Terrific and Manchester Black as rival leaders of the team.
My idea for the Authority team is Manchester Black, Mr. Terrific, Guy Gardner (Red Lantern?), Hawk Girl, Midnighter and Apollo
Cameron Monaghan would be perfect for the doctor, he can play an absolute disaster so well, just look at the show Shameless, he was the definition of disaster, I never even thought of him as the doctor but I want it so bad now.
after watching season 5 of Fargo i think Sam Spruell would play a perfect Doctor. he’s basically his character on Fargo with reality manipulation.
I noticed he said that the Authority movie will be kinda for kids, but I think James Gunn’s goal with this is to make it a little more pushy on the PG-13 rating. Maybe even have some movies be straight up R.

Generally, I'm a fan of superhero deconstructions being wrong. All of your choices fit how David's purer Superman would have to confront moral corruption early in his career to set up Metropolis as his home AND he as The Man of Tomorrow. It makes Kingdom Come all the more tragic when it eventually happens. All that goodwill lead to yet ANOTHER Authority, even more unhinged than before.

I mean, other than the extremely obvious name issue, I think Matt Smith would be a perfect Doctor.
In the same way The Doctor is a spoof on Dr strange, Matt Smith feels like a pallette swap of Benedict Cumberbatch.
Plus he said he did Morbius because Karen Gillan suggested doing a comic book role, so doing something Gunn related would probably be a better representation of that, lol.
