2023 BMW X1 xDrive23d - Comes at a Premium (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • BMW X1 U11 is the third generation of the sub-compact SUV. It comes as front-wheel drive, as well as all-wheel drive with petrol and diesel engines. For example a three-cylinder, 170-horsepower petrol engine propelled the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, which I reviewed last year. If you don't need all-wheel drive, it's an engine worth checking out.
    Except for the least powerful petrol and diesel engines, which are non-electrified, all others are either mild hybrids or plug-in hybrids. Plug-ins finally have charging up to 7.4 kW and batteries with more capacity than the BMW X3 PHEV I reviewed about two years ago.
    I decided to remind myself what we liked about diesels, before it became clear that the future belongs to electric and electrified models. And by the way, BMW's sub-compact crossover can also be ordered as an EV called the iX1.
    This is the BMW X1 xDrive23d, which means the most powerful 197-horsepower two-liter diesel, which, according to the manufacturer, should use about 5-5.5 L/100 km combined. This result is easily achievable.

    I think you nailed the summary of the X1, Marek. The 2nd generation is the most popular vehicle purchase within my friend group for exactly the qualities you've listed. The X1 seems to hit that sweet spot of being practical and premium, but with pricing that only seems like s small stretch from fully specced non-premium competitors. I'd probably be looking at the Mazda CX-60 in this price range as well

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd probably spec it a bit cheaper, but the CX-60 argument keeps popping up on my Polish channel. Have you driven the CX-60 already? I understand how it may be appealing to some, but I'd take the Bimmer any day of the week.

    • @laupakhin
      @laupakhin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarekDrivesENG In my local market customer CX-60 will arrive in Q2 - at the moment they're taking pre-orders only I believe. The base engine available here for the X1 is the sDrive18i which makes a lot more sense price wise, as the xDrive20i pretty much lines up directly with the inline 6 CX-60 in AWD form. I must admit that there is a certain allure to having an I6, but then again it's an SUV, so does it even matter?

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว

      Now get this! I'm writing the script for my GLC review, and it seems a comparably specced CX-60 is maybe 3-4 thousand euro cheaper, than the Mercedes. OK, Mazda has the 6-cylinder engine, but IMO it has no real impact on performance. Instead Mazda falls into a higher tax bracket in some markets, because of the larger displacement.

    Hi Marek, thanks for the video. While waiting my 23d (maybe august 🤷🏻‍♂️😅) a question: I am very impressed by the 7.1 seconds needed for 0-100 acceleration: you mentioned “sport plus” mode for reaching this result, but what do you mean specifically? Sport driving mode while pulling the “boost” lever on the left side of the steering wheel?

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      BMW has several driving models - Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus. I suppose Sport Plus is a compliance exercise - i.e. it allows BMW to advertise performance, which will rarely be accessed, hence it keeps the regulators happy, and clients excited. The Boost function is independent of drive modes, and it probably takes you into Sport Mode settings. Sport Plus may (I'm sorry, but I don't remember what it does on every BMW model) limit traction control, so that has to be activated deliberately by the driver, rather than by accident, when the paddle is pulled.

    I own a F48 18d with xdrive and I'm very happy with it. However, even though I considered going for a new one, I really dislike the fact that everything seems to go digital, dashboard, gearbox lever, no real physical buttons and worst of all, no I-drive, while the price has gone considerably up (even if some of the gadgets are thrown in "for free" to make it less obvious). Seems like they're doing everything to produce them cheaper while selling them at a higher price. Kind of feels like a backwards step in terms of premium feel for me

    • @urosvranic4930
      @urosvranic4930 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ranko, I have the same x1 18d x drive face-lift , and BMW Serbia gave me new model for one day to test it. It was Sdrive 18d, but it was so good. I thought my car was perfect, but the new one is improved. Sound isolation, gearbox, fells faster, you do not feel it is diesel in cabin, steering is lighter, just feels better in every aspect. Only missing 8 gear on high way after 150km/h. Test is and you will probably think the same.

    • @rankod
      @rankod ปีที่แล้ว

      @@urosvranic4930 I have no doubt there are some improvements, I just feel it's not all in direction I would like to see. Looks like most of the change's gone towards design but the real feel is more like a poor man's BMW. Configurationwise, 18d is no longer available as xdrive which is a shame considering a vast torque this engine offers, for that you have to go to 20d which, of course, is much more expensive. Meanwhile, I found out the 150hp in my 18d is more than plenty but loved the inclusion of xdrive for safety and better traction. Also, there are split opinions to say the least about the new DCT, why was this switch necessary when the old converter 8-speed was excellent? This seems to me like a step back, or a cost-cutting measure. Now the quality gap between X1 and X3 is in my eyes much wider and pretty obvious, and I feel even a lower spec X3 would be a better way to go next, even though I didn't choose it last time for size reasons

      As this is a mild hybrid, someone's probably adding the electric motor power output to the petrol engine power. I have a spec sheet for this particular test car from BMW, and it says 197 hp. On its website in Poland, and in Germany BMW doesn't state the power output for this model. Data sheet from the press website just states 197 hp for the diesel engine, and 19 hp for the electric motor.

    In Canada we only get the X1 28i xDrive with 241hp. Mild hybrid. Not sure what the hybrid is doing because the mileage rating doesn't seem that great and it runs on premium fuel which is 35 cents more per litre than 87 octane. I booked a test drive of this next week anyways to check it out. I think this looks sharp and it almost has the same interior space as the X3 while being a little more agile.
    Is it just me, or do all of the modern cars have designs that need 19-21 inch wheels to make them look proportional? This X1 needs at least 19s imo. A shame the iX1 isn't coming to Canada. I think I'd buy that. Thanks for the good review Marek!

    I often wonder who is "The Genious" behind BMWs policy of paid options. Do you have to pay for lumbar support in 2023? Lumbar support is not a luxury but common sense - you want your buyers to feel as comfortable as possible in the car - especially the family SUV. All other crap can be some package option, but lumbar support in the SUV seats? Cmon man... That is the reason why I am going for 2023 Kia Sportage instead - I get everything there
