The real necessary update to any video capable camera is internal ND filter. When most systems have log profiles, and high ISO is required for optimal image quality, this addition looks so obvious that I can't comprehend why no maker comes up with it. It would give that system a competitive advantage over any other.
@@RedFrameTech I used to have a Sony XAVC camcorder back in the day, can't recall the name, but a big one that first recorded on a proprietary memory card. That camera had built in ND filter...like 20 years ago.

The GH6 is absolutely fantastic, luckily I ignored most tubers disappointing reviews and went for it. I have captured some absolutely amazing footage in the Scottish highlands and had no issue with streaking luckily in my 2 years of owning it, is it really a thing?? The only downside for me with the GH6 is not the Contrast based AF because I mainly use MF lenses or switch the AF to MF 90% of the time though the AF is fine anyway I have found. My issue and its only minor is the format as I am so used to ENG cameras, i kinda like the heft and the shoulder mount etc. The G9ii offered nothing I was interested in and the GH7 doesn't really either apart from real time LUT which the GH6 could easily handle if Lumix update the FW. looking at GH6 vs GH7 and G9ii footage I must say that I prefer the GH6, maybe its softer or the colors just look better, there is just something more digital in the newer models. Maybe its being used to tape based late 90s footage that makes me prefer the GH6 I am not sure. If I was coming into the game new now would I buy a GH7, probably not tbh as I have also bought into Sony FF low light A7Sii so I would likely be holding out for the A7S4 but for many people the GH7 is going to be a great intro and may be a worthy upgrade for the GH5 crew who weren't keen on the GH6 maybe. Better to swoop on a GH6 soon though as with the Pen-F when folks realise just how good it is for so cheap, the price is gonna start to rise again. its hard a short production run so will be a rare beast eventually and I think its footage is in a nice niche of its own. I agree. The GH6 should easily be able to handle Real Time LUT. I feel like Panasonic are ignoring the GH6 at this point. I share your observation on image quality between GH6 and GH7/G9II. From what I’ve seen so far, the GH6 looks much better. Like you said, the GH7’s (and G9II) image looks a bit more digital. My guess is that it might be a compromise due to a sensor with PDAF. Cool you’re still using HVR 😄 The DJI Pocket 3 is definitely a good youtube camera and I’d like to get it. Perhaps I’ll wait until there’s some hands on videos and comparisons to the GH6. Thanks for sharing all of that!
Thank you for this review, very complete. As a solo shooter, I am always looking for ways to reduce the workload, the number of steps I must go through before I start filming. Lighting, audio, camera operation all take specific necessary steps to be done correctly in order achieve quality video. Although my GH6 works well, I can see producing the kind of video I shoot ; animals in Africa, quick honest expressions from people, will be more easily achieved with the GH7. The audio attachment and improved auto focusing , are the two standout features that I will benefit from.
I can definitely see why the GH7 would be a welcome upgrade for what you do. I didn’t talk about it in my video, but filming wildlife is going to be so much easier with the GH7 because of the PDAF
The GH7 is everything the GH6 was supposed to be, and a bit more. The GH7 is also not just a G9-II. It's a GH5-II, GH6 and GH9-II stuffed into one body and then some extra sauce added. And the Smallrig Black Mamba cage also uses the strapmounts to secure the cage. Phase detect AF, 32-bit float audio, internal RAW and the streaming functions from the GH5-II all in one body is a lot more than just a G9-II in another body.
@@RedFrameTech I already did. I just hope, that Kamera Express gets their act together this time. It took them ages to get S5-II X stock and fulfill the pre-orders. The XLR adapter is 550 EUR in Germany (Foto Erhardt). Kamera Express didn't have it listed, nor the dummy, so I had to order those from B&H.
@@RedFrameTech It's Kamera Express in the Netherlands, I'm ordering from :p ..... meaning I get it VAT free (inter-EU trade) and their pricing tends to be really good. But they constantly break their webshop.
Wow, I love your video. I actually watch quite a lot of (lumix& co) camera related TH-cam stuff and your setting looks to me so much out of a real professional work life. I can also follow your view on this new camera as well as on the older models. Even though I’m more a beginner on the video side doing some simple productions for my own company (while I’m MFT photo shooter for many year) I also need much more those features that ease the recording process.
The reason I bought the GH5ii was the low setting on the preamp and compatibility with the XLR1 adapter over my G9. Purchased the S5ii because i needed full frame for other (photography related) reasons and PDAF was a bonus. Considering the GH7 but waiting on more details on the XLR2 adapter to (1) see if the noise performance when the preamps are pushed is improved and (2) if the XLR2 becomes backwards compatible with the S5ii and/or GH5ii even in 24-bit mode. 32 bit is still not the selling point for me. Actually, l'm more excited about the DMW-XLR2 than I am the GH7. Thanks for your thoughts, see you Sunday on Curtis Judd's livestream. Cheers from Montana!
I’m also curious about the noise performance. I expect it to be a lot better than the XLR1. I also saw some indications of backwards compatibility of the XLR2 with at least the GH6, but that presumably means it’s going to be compatible with other models as well (albeit in 24bit). See you Sunday 🙂🎤
My thing as a 3 time GH6 purchaser is, they should absolutely not release a successor to a product until the original warranty expires. I bought a GH6 last year and I wish I had waited. To your point, I hope they continue to support the GH6 through firmware and trickle down features
The GH7 seems to be more of a quick update as a stop gap from potential users jump ship to other brands while covering few important upgrades for a small GH6 users that need them. This will buy time for Panasonic for a new hardware update like with multiple USB-C ports, possibly weight reduction, internal processor for AI, dual CF Express B cards etc. to GH8. All of a sudden M43 will be the go to pro camera 😊
I found ALL, and I do mean all, of your comments to be spot on. I've watch just a few of the other reviewers and I kept thinking (and on Robin Wong's thread commenting) that there just didn't seem like quite enough of an upgrade. You make a good point on the audio options (though I too have enough audio gear and Beachtek units that I do not wish to buy another outboard deck). So yes, better audio options at an enhanced price that I likely won't go for, and better AF. While I could argue that the better AF is enough to upgrade, by itself it is less than compelling. As to lack of marketing, it's almost like they are acknowledging that this is what the GH6 should have been more like (I'd agree), so it feels like they just wanted to sneak it into the market, almost like it HAD been the cam they released 2 years ago! lol But it does make me yearn for whatever the GH8 will be, as by then I expect it to be worth the upgrade.
You make a good point about the marketing. Let’s hope they won’t completely ignore the GH6. I still haven’t decided on the GH7 yet myself. It’s a tough one. The main reasons would be the convenience of having the XLR2 with 32bit float and the autofocus (though I mostly shoot manual). That’s quite the investment for a new camera body relative to the new features it has over the GH6. Thanks so much for watching!
@@RedFrameTech Right. To get that audio we want it will run around $3,000 US for cam and audio (Of course, don't buy it now. I bought mine for that $2,200US and promptly saw it drop to under $1,600 a few months later. And this is how companies chip away at a customer's loyalty!) 32-bit would be nice. But I want it built in. I have a Zoom H5 and can simply set that to 24-bit, which really still gives a damned good buffer zone. But also lets us run a second audio input at lower gain. Crackling issues I have had (bad cables) but I don't recall the last time I had clipped audio.
BTW, let me also add what you IMPLIED in your video when you showed you were doing a talking head with the old G9. That is, sure the PDAF is better and great. No argument. But the older AF, especially on the last revisions of it, like in the GH6, was VERY useable. Not quite thoughtless run-and-gun, or fully reliable remote. But still quite serviceable. Besides, over half of my lenses are manual anyway! lol And if someone is a total R&G shooter, and totally dependent on the best AF, they likely moved to Sony a while back. Or certainly should have. And last, the other item you noted that I had not heard, was that the GH6 and 7 images/colors don't match. That is moronic! Most of the ppl who are buying the GH7 are already in the system and likely have a GH6 (or 5, which is non-matching yet again). Install a setting: "Match GH6 Color".
yea, 24bit audio is plenty. It’s just that as a (mostly) solo videographer, not having to set gain is one thing less to worry about. Plus the added benefit of the ability to raise levels in post without raising the noise floor. But yeah, I’m probably gonna wait till the first price drop..
I agree. The GH6’s AF is quite usable. The mismatch in color between the GH6 and 7 is a concern. For my G9 I made a LUT to match its V-logL to my GH6’s V-log, which was not too difficult. So I’m hoping it’s doable for the GH7 as well and I’ll probably match it to the GH6. Not the other way around
Def agree w cons.So 32bit meaning start record and stop record is in the video file without needing to sync in post .correct? Does discontinued gh6 for certain means lumix will no longer support Fw updates for say support fw to fix any issue w Dji Focus Pro w no external motor w Lumix 10-25 1.7 and 25-50 1.7 as did you mention in afm when you hold the wheel when interupted subject passing the feature doesnt work?or better yet xlr2 work on gh6🤪hopefully i misunderstood. The flippy screen is so baddazz as this show Red🎉Thank You
Answer to your first question: that’s correct 🙂 I’m not sure what the discontinued status means for potential firmware updates tbh. I suspect to see a few more for the GH6, even though it’s discontinued. What I did hear so far is that the XLR2 will be backwards compatible, but only in regular 24bit audio. No 32bit float for the GH6.. As always, thanks for watching!
I’m rocking the same 2 cameras, GH6 and OG G9. One thing I really wish the G9 had was the custom focus limiter. Really helps with those self-filming scenarios. Love the GH6 too, except for those funky Dynamic Range Boost parameters.
I really appreciate your initial thoughts. I'm a big fan of the GH6 and I keep telling myself that I'll wait, but I'm not sure I can resist. I still prefer the image from the GH6, and when I see comparisons, it's like the GH6 has that optical low-pass filter (OLPF) look and appears to be less digital.
I was waiting for your impressions and I 100% agree with you. The only difference for me is that for now I'm going to keep my gh6 and wait 6-12 months for some deep reviews and comparisons because I'm really concerned with the actual IQ of this camera. Then eventually I will grab a deal on the used market. All the nice additions are not ground breaking to justify a preorder like I did for he gh6.
I share your concerns with the IQ. I can’t be bad, but it might not be as good as the GH6’s IQ. I’m still debating getting the GH7 on preorder or wait a bit like you are.
I'm a graphic designer who currently shoots a lot of food and drink videos on location, bars, restaurants, hotels, etc. I currently use a Sony A7R5, and shoot 1080p 100fps vertically. I do a lot of handheld pans and small movements around the product or interiors. I was thinking of buying the GH7 for a few reasons. First reason for the improved stabilisation, then for the 32 bit float because I sometimes don't have the time to monitor my audio properly. The third reason is the 10-25 f1.7, that matches my Tamron 20-40 (nearly 😅). The fact that I could film in 4K 50p with no crop and AF could also be a bonus. But I'm not really sure how much Panasonics stabilisation will help me, as I've never shot on a GH camera.
@@RedFrameTech thanks - will touch screen focus work ok to establish a focus point on a product. I'm keeping my A7R for photography and if I need lowlight on a job.
@@markshirley01 You can move the focus box around on the touch screen, but it doesn't autofocus when you let go. Instead there's a dedicaten 'AF ON' button on the camera. I like it that way, but that comes down to personal preference. I'd recommend going to a store once the GH7 is available to get some hands on before you buy.
Re what's the point of RT LUT - you still get the dynamic range advantage from V-Log, actually, compared to Natural etc. It really is more for people who don't want to do post at all though I think. As for the storage solutions - yeah, I also wish it had dual CFe.
You’re right. I should have phrased that differently. My point is that you don’t get the flexibility of V-log in post if RTL is used, but you do get the dynamic range advantage while shooting
The live LUTS workflow will be of benefit for those that shoot Live (such as on a gimbal as a special cam used in broadcast) whereby it can be colour graded to match the other real broadcast cameras or those that must deliver on quick deadlines such as news shooters! I have a fully rigged GH6 but I unfortunately have not used it that much because I had bought the Nikon Z9 at the same time and that has now become my A cam hybrid camera but I too have no intention of selling my GH6 or GH5 because they will be great for travelling or used as a back up! As to the GH7, I am in no rush to buy it but I can see it also being added to my tool kit sometime in the future especially when those first price reductions kick in. It appears to be a no-brainier for those that are heavily invested in MFT as too am I. 👍🏾🙏🏾. 🏴🇸🇪🇹🇹
They didn't want to overshadowed the s9 perhaps? I agree very weird!!! coming from a gh5ii im really considering the gh7 hard... Especially with my mft lens collection but im still also thinking about a S5iix both are compelling cameras to me
Both are compelling cameras for sure! I’m sticking with micro four thirds. While the S5IIx is very compelling, I’m not willing to invest in a set of full frame lenses for a camera that I’d probably like less than I do my GH6 and probably GH7. But everyone has their own needs and preferences 🙂
I would buy the GH7 if I could afford it as there is a bad recession in the UK right now. But Lumix should have upped the resolution of the EVF and extended the battery life as GH6 battery life is weak.
@@Democratiser I had put it on a cheap tripod and was able to jam the legs between and against things like the sliding mechanism of the seat etc. It was surprisingly stable. Much more stable than i’d expected haha

XLR2 is so expensive, about $500, so in most cases it's not worth. At almost cost of Zoom F6... 32 bit float audio in general is avaialble in audio software from 2000 or even earlier, literally, but nobody bothered to implement for 20 years, and now present it like a innovation, that should be done a decade ago.

The XLR adapter is 550 EUR in Germany (Foto Erhardt). Kamera Express didn't have it listed, nor the dummy, so I had to order those from B&H.
Yeah, Kamera Express has issues here in the Netherlands as well. It goes wrong more than it goes smoothly
@@RedFrameTech It's Kamera Express in the Netherlands, I'm ordering from :p ..... meaning I get it VAT free (inter-EU trade) and their pricing tends to be really good. But they constantly break their webshop.
Oh. And if you think the GH7 release was cringe .. check out the Canon EOS C400 release 2 hours before that. That was really cringe.
If you’re new to my channel, welcome! 🙂 The GH7 definitely has some features that make life easier
Thank you for your presentation.
You may very well be right! It sure is how it feels. Still, the GH7 is an interesting camera. I’ll probably wait until the first price drop 😅
Focus limiter for the G9 would’ve been great for sure. But I think the G9 is end of life in terms of FW updates 😅
I’m telling myself the same thing. Haven’t decided yet 😅 I am slighly concerned about IQ on the GH7. Thanks for watching!
The GH7 makes a lot of sense for your use case. Stabilization is next level if you’re coming from Sony, that’s for sure!
What you’re saying about real time lut makes perfect sense! hadn’t thought of that. Thanks for sharing!
I see it as a second cam to the GH6 what i like most is the AF in a GH6 body thats it i got the Video assist
I think I’m going to wait for the price to come down a bit. Maybe it will be in the $1500-$1700USD with holiday sales.
That’s probably wise. I don’t think I want to wait that long 😅
I would buy the GH7 if I could afford it as there is a bad recession in the UK right now. But Lumix should have upped the resolution of the EVF and extended the battery life as GH6 battery life is weak.
Definitely agree with what you say about the EVF!
Does the 32 bit float work even without the XLR2 adapter?
I’m 99% sure it doesn’t
@@RedFrameTech yeh just saw another vid that says it doesn't.
i would have liked a dual iso like gh5s.. and yeah.. dont look at the screen while driving :D
You’re right. No more looking at the screen while driving from now on 😅
The footage from your G9 looks great. Did you add your skintone LUT? The GH7 is a powerhouse but I think for my use case the G9 will do.
Yeah, I apply my LUT as a standard to all my G9 v-log footage. It’s still a great camera ( apart from the hunting AF when I’m filming myself 😅)
How did you brace the camera in your car? Looks very stable.
@@Democratiser I had put it on a cheap tripod and was able to jam the legs between and against things like the sliding mechanism of the seat etc. It was surprisingly stable. Much more stable than i’d expected haha
@@RedFrameTech you know, I suspected it was a tripod as I couldn’t imagine any other way of getting that angle without specialist stunt movie type kit like suction cups etc! Whatever works! And it did! Great image and audio. I was impressed you were so articulate while driving.
Quick (probably easy) question - for in-car talking head videos, wouldn’t it be easier to just set the G9 to MF and there won’t be any pulsing at all.
That would definitely be easier and I should’ve done that 😅
i would love to own the gh7 as it is almost everything i ever wanted but i am afraid they did not bring back the battery grip option the gh6 was missing and my beloved gh5 has. this is very important to me as a hybrid shooter doing pictures and video equallly
Yeah, since it’s the exact same body as the GH6 I don’t think there’s any chance of compatibility with a battery grip. I can see why you’d want that
XLR2 is so expensive, about $500, so in most cases it's not worth. At almost cost of Zoom F6... 32 bit float audio in general is avaialble in audio software from 2000 or even earlier, literally, but nobody bothered to implement for 20 years, and now present it like a innovation, that should be done a decade ago.
Agreed!
Gh7 has no UFO detection mode?....pass
😂
