Thank you for covering the dual record options. This is something I hadn't seen mentioned in detail anywhere else and is extremely important to us wedding filmmakers
It's kinda wild that noise is super important especially with a m4/3 and yet some reviewers only shot footage in direct overhead sunlight with no ISO tests (Petapixel to name one). Glad WhoIsMatt did an ISO test but in my experience once you grade the footage is when you can see the actual noise performance.. You can see quite a bit of noise at ISO 6400 @ 20:39 but maybe it's good with ISO 1600 or less?
I own sony a7iv bodies and I was thinking recently. I use them for weddings (mainly hybrid coverage) and I always film in 4k60. The crop factor is 1.5 (it is annoying but this is not my point right now). Then I use lens breathing compensation. As far as I know it adds 1.11 times crop. Then I use active stabilization which adds another 1.1x crop. Combined it is a whopping 1.83 times crop. That is closer to an mft crop than an apsc and the camera is downsampling the footage from 9.85 mpx which is barely more than 4k. At that point I bet you money the gh7 and the g9ii both have superior image quality. And even then I like the video I get out of the a7iv (even the bokeh is enough with f1.4 lenses), so I think these cameras are capable of really great things. Honestly looks impressive and the price for these specs are really good.
I have the gh7 today. What's the best setting to photograph and video for my own use. I don't want to grade or do those complex things. All i want is shoot and store for future memory
Thanks Matt. Now I'm torn between the S5IIX and the GH7... I don't care about stills, but I'm not an event shooter either. I want a camera to narrative shoot short films and documentary (solo or with a skeleton crew), sometimes with an anamorphic lens. Currently don't have any camera system or lenses, only a X100VI for stills, so it would be start from scratch for me.
If it's a budget thing, I'd go GH7. Internal raw is very cool UNLESS you're married to DaVinci. I am, so I got the s5iix and a video assist. Tbh the internal color on the gh7 I like just a tiny bit more and it doesn't have very much rolling shutter. It really comes down to if you're gonna use davinci anyway and want b raw or if you don't care and want to shoot compressed.
Thanks for the review. MFT versus Full Frame advantage is zoom lense size. An MFT doesn't need a Hubble Space Telescope and a crane to support telephoto.
You can still get ProRes or BMRaw open-gate (as well as 5.7K 16:9 at 60 fps) via an Atomos or BlackMagic recorder. The internal RAW recording seems to be limited to about 50% of the maximum sensor bandwidth. The results you and others are collecting put this camera somewhere in between most APS/S35 cameras and full-framers like A7S3, and that's quite an accomplishment for an M43. It seems that they've really ironed out the kinks in their simultaneous-dual-gain implementation (aka "dynamic range assist").
good review. my main reason for upgrading from a sony a1 full-frame is REACH. that camera has no crop factor and when shooting wildlife, mostly, i need 1,000mm or more many times. full frame fails to get the reach with relatively small light-weight lenses. i have the g9ii and am thinking about this for the flip screen, express card, and locking mode dial.

As mentioned in the video, you will want to use the USB port to record to an 2 TB SSD due to file size. Honestly, given the fact that Apple users are known to spend a lot of money, it makes sense to make them happy.
I don't see much chroma noise , some denoising in post could work wonders and the image from the camera is very sharp so a bit of softening wouldn't be that bad which may get comparable picture to the lower resolution sensor in the fx3. also with internal Raw and arri log things might get even better .. needs more testing ..

such a nice camera. wish sony would have those futures in fx30s. Both of them 2k but this one definitly beats the sony. what do you think ? would you buy this over fx30 ?
The GH7 is what the GH6 should have been. Having PDAF is what users wanted. The other specs are cool but having the PDAF is what is most needed by those who buy the camera
Each new Lumix camera seems to be a test bed for features on future cameras. Some of those get into previous cameras via firmware updates, provided the hardware supports them. This likely will replace my GH4, which I've avoided upgrading, patiently waiting for a GH with PDAF. FINALLY!!!!
I used to think full frame was the only way to go, but then I got GX80 and liked it very much. Pair it with Olympus or Leica lens and you can't go wrong.
Great review Matt. I committed to the GH5 line and you were 100% correct about the low light. Oh boy was it terrible. I eventually bought a GH5s which became my main camera for corporate.
Solid review Matt....I wonder if Sony will incorporate 6K open gate with the a7SIV and 32 bit float audio? If they do, plus add the a7RV screen....game over.
I own a S5iix and a GH5. My GH5 is really old and I'm thinking of upgrading it as my bcam. Is the gh6 worth buying since it's cheaper or would you just spend more for the gh7?
Does the dynamic range boost stop working in any higher ISOs or is it only above 60fps that is the limit? Prores raw not being workable in Davinci is a big ouchy. And also something about prores needing specific sensor areas for it work, which I'll to watch again to understand it.
I'm still rocking the GH5. Sometimes just in 10-bit 1080! For instagram, clients eyes don't see the difference....but dang, the GH5 auto focus still curses me!
It’s silly they didn’t include the 32 but float unless you buy their adapter.. is that correct? I can’t just plug my shotgun mic into the mic port and get 32?
@@whoismatt32-bit float only works with the XLR Adapter which is $500. It isn't in the camera and every camera can do the same. Just buy a DJI Mic 2 or a Rode Wireless Pro It's the same difference and honestly shouldnt be touted as a feature
The GH7 effectively has simultaneous dual ISO, as does the GH6 in "extended DR" mode. The way a conventional dual-ISO sensor works is that you select one of two gains to be applied when clocking out the sensor, and that's what you get. The way a dual-gain sensor like GH7 works is that it simultaneously applies both gains to _every_ pixel, and then chooses which one to use based on the signal strength. If there isn't much charge in the photosite (low light level, fewer photons) then it uses the result of the high gain stage, otherwise it uses the result of the low gain stage. It's analogous to how Sound Devices' multi-stage A/Ds in the MixPre II and 8-series work. GH7's implementation appears better than GH6's though.
That's the big question that no one is answering. The only reason I'd buy the GH7 is if it's stabilisation is noticeably better, as that is major benefit to me.
So if recording audio with a shotgun mic in 32-bit float using the XLR2 then we should just set the gain to zero to have the most flexibility and dynamic range? I have a rode NTG-3
I've never recorded via SSD before; is that considered risky for shooting weddings, seeing as it's only one drive and there's no redundancy? Or are you able to dual record to the SD slot and SSD?
@@bernardomachado2842 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 are terms used for video formats that involve chroma subsampling, a method of compressing video by reducing color information. @@michalwalks thanks for clarifying! So Pro res raw has no compresion? As oposed to arri raw? Is the 12 bit raw hdmi output from the gh7 that can be recorded on the ninja pro res raw or something else?
gh7 looks amazing, but I'm not convinced it's overall cheaper than a FF camera. The price, size and weight of the 10-25 1.7 is in the same ballpark as FF zooms like the sigma 24-70 (and significantly pricier than the sigma 28-70). Right now, S5ii bodies are cheaper than gh7s. Likewise for primes, a 25mm 1.4 MFT is similarly priced to the 50mm L mount. It doesn't help that the gh bodies have always been on the larger side. I love my gh5, but are we at a point where MFT costs just as much as FF, if you're not already in the lens ecosystem?
wait internal raw recording, how are they starting to get away with the infamous RED patent? because is some kind of compressed raw which is allowed? and how come davinci does not plan to support it? wait WHAT? is it also part of that patent problem? Wonder if there raw to raw conversion is even possible to get around it somehow. they must be pretty confident with the dynamic range boost if they don't even allow to turn it off... sometimes I turn it off on my s5mk2 if I want more contrast from an already flat setting. or play around with the intensity of it. hmmm 32bit float is def the best, but can that external audio recorder allow 32 bit float for s5mk2? thought it did but might be confused with the senheizer wireless boom adapter who allows 32 bit float to be recorded to the transmitter. still rocking my gh5, lost 80 % of the rubber from so many handheld shoots but still more than usable. A Panasonic rep told me that there are no changes to 4:3 recording resolutions or frame rates. Everything in this regard is the same as the GH6, so 60fps 4.4K 4:3 is going to have that horrible crop. Would love to hear that this is wrong… perhaps by someone who actually has the camera?

Netflix seriously needs to approve more hybrid cameras as primary cameras for their productions. I know they did the S1H, but the S5 IIX is at least as good, plus it has better autofocus. I believe they should approve the GH7 as well. Honestly, I think the G9 II is more than enough for most videographers. If they didn't mind focusing manually, the GH5 was good enough for most videographers. The GH7 is a niche camera for high-end productions. With regard to CFExpress, I would like the industry to make SD to CFExpress adapters. I know you will be limited by the SD card format in terms of read/write speeds, but sometimes, you just want to record using two card slots, and you don't have a CFExpress card or your CFExpress card is full. They used to do this with SD to Compact Flash. Of course, Sony's implementation is the best of all since the same slot can accommodate CFExpress Type A or SD cards. None of these things is within Panasonic's control, and I have to say they have nailed everything they can control. The 32-bit float internal audio is indeed a game-changer.
You say the GH7 is some weird niche product for high end productions. I counter to say that it should be the standard for videography kit. You don't get to tell people that a lesser model is more than enough.

such a nice camera. wish sony would have those futures in fx30s.
FINALLY!!!!
You’ve been holding out for 10 years! It’s finally time to upgrade!
Is 4k live cropping still there?
Just a heads up, GH6 also does open gate 4.4k :)
When I saw "Great AF" in the thumbnail, for a hot second, I thought you meant "Great As F**K"
I used to think full frame was the only way to go, but then I got GX80 and liked it very much. Pair it with Olympus or Leica lens and you can't go wrong.
On my wish list now after watching this video.
By that point we may see a S1Hii with all of those features as well. Panasonic is really competing!
Man open gate would be so nice because every client wants a reel to go with their video deliverable. Cropping a 16:9 into 9:16 is tricky
Yes that is worth upgrading for
They better
@@billem16why not film some shots in 9:16 on the day
I own a S5iix and a GH5. My GH5 is really old and I'm thinking of upgrading it as my bcam. Is the gh6 worth buying since it's cheaper or would you just spend more for the gh7?
很好的開箱評測,來自香港的感謝。Thank you very much🙏
How do you achieve the amazing colors in all your videos? Is there an explanatory video or short answer?
If you want the same colors I sell my color presets at whoismatt.com/luts, and I also have color grading tutorials here on my TH-cam channel. :)
For instagram, clients eyes don't see the difference....but dang, the GH5 auto focus still curses me!
mic drop for audio. what have they created? that is crazy
I'm so excited about it! Every camera needs 32 bit float!
It’s silly they didn’t include the 32 but float unless you buy their adapter.. is that correct? I can’t just plug my shotgun mic into the mic port and get 32?
@@JRESHOWcorrect, maybe a technical reason
I'm going to guess that the xlr adapter has the hardware in it to get the job done. @@JRESHOW
@@whoismatt32-bit float only works with the XLR Adapter which is $500. It isn't in the camera and every camera can do the same. Just buy a DJI Mic 2 or a Rode Wireless Pro
It's the same difference and honestly shouldnt be touted as a feature
What about i nternal BRAW recording just like prores and an OLPF
I thought it was 3 chanels of 32bit through the XLR accessory and when you add in the 4th (the cameras mic jack) everything switches to 24bit.
The mic jack on the xlr accessory is stereo. That's two channels there and one each for the xlrs.
Got it!
Does it have dual iso or something. Or what’s the best higher iso
Hey! I would feel comfortable up to about ISO 6400. The review shows iso examples 😁
Would you rather shoot s5ii or gh7 at a wedding?
That's the big question that no one is answering. The only reason I'd buy the GH7 is if it's stabilisation is noticeably better, as that is major benefit to me.
Texas?!? Me too!! I had no idea you were in Texas. Dallas?
Thanks for the video, Matt! Just so I understand, the GH7 can shoot 5.7K 60fps in ProRes, OR, 5.7K 60fps only in 10-bit? Thanks :)
Totally you should review a lumix s52
He's too late. He didn't do the ii or the x.
So if recording audio with a shotgun mic in 32-bit float using the XLR2 then we should just set the gain to zero to have the most flexibility and dynamic range? I have a rode NTG-3
Thank you for your presentation.
Happy new release to you! Does this camera have streaming features?
Watch the video, he covers the streaming features.
Yes! I need to test how well they work but streaming is very supported
Hi Matt which stabilisation would you say is better the gh7 or sonya7r5
GH7
@@whoismattthank you fella
I've never recorded via SSD before; is that considered risky for shooting weddings, seeing as it's only one drive and there's no redundancy? Or are you able to dual record to the SD slot and SSD?
Yes, depending on the bit rate, you can record to both.
I read the GH7Specs at B&H and it says it can record externally at 12 bit raw. Woul that be 4:2:2 or 4:4:4?
neither
@@michalwalks so which is it?
@@bernardomachado2842 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 are terms used for video formats that involve chroma subsampling, a method of compressing video by reducing color information. RAW video does not use chroma subsampling. It captures all the data from the camera sensor without compression or reduction in color information.
Wonder if there raw to raw conversion is even possible to get around it somehow.
they must be pretty confident with the dynamic range boost if they don't even allow to turn it off... sometimes I turn it off on my s5mk2 if I want more contrast from an already flat setting. or play around with the intensity of it. hmmm
32bit float is def the best, but can that external audio recorder allow 32 bit float for s5mk2? thought it did but might be confused with the senheizer wireless boom adapter who allows 32 bit float to be recorded to the transmitter.
still rocking my gh5, lost 80 % of the rubber from so many handheld shoots but still more than usable.
Im a sony fanboy by the way, but every time I'm in the market for cameras Panasonic has had the best value.
“Legendary battery life of the GH5” I remember it clearly feeling the difference coming from the true legendary battery life of the GH4
Finally! I’m waiting for you to release your review ☺️ I was gonna sell 2 of my S5ii for Sony fx3/a7siii this weekend…. Saw this.. FB listing - deleted! 🤭
😂 there’s always a newer and better camera
@@whoismatt how can a normal wedding videographer (me 😅) to be a part of your review? 😅 i have an unorthodox style of shooting and will do a bts soon. 😁
Hi, why you sell s5II? Do You think that GH7 will be better than s5II? Im curious, because I want buy S5IIX but now Im confused😢
@@tomaszbabiak1606 oh i was gonna switch to sony. since i only shoot wedding photos/videos using both s5ii, i can now buy 2x gh7 for video and keep the s5ii for photos
oh wow...i am so glad i watched this video..some extra little nuggests i didnt see anyone else talk about. i had no idea about the 4.4k open gate at 60fps...is it the full sensor read out? or it's just an aspect ratio crop? so essentlly in 5.8k 30 and 4.4k 60fps does the field of view remain the same? or is ther ea crop on the 4.4k open gate mode?
I think believe its a full sensor readout considering its higher vertical resolution than the 5.7K 16:9
@@whoismatt okay.. Hopefully it could be tested. Loved the video... Was full of solutions rather than just "this is downsides of the camera"
@@whoismattthis isn’t what a Panasonic rep told me… are you able to actually check?
A Panasonic rep told me that there are no changes to 4:3 recording resolutions or frame rates.
Everything in this regard is the same as the GH6, so 60fps 4.4K 4:3 is going to have that horrible crop.
Would love to hear that this is wrong… perhaps by someone who actually has the camera?
Pleaaase if you can: try out autofocus performance with the metabones speedbooster ❤
I don't have a Metabones to test unfortunately.
hoping the speedbooster can utilize the PDAF
Thank you so much man! 🙏🙏🙏
Wow... can't tell you how many times I said this during your video. Why did they lead with S9 and not the GH7?
I wondered that exact thing
Official ARRI C LOG is crazy!
Why? Because it’s called “ARRI”? It’s just another gimmick LUT. Like if your car had “Official Ferrari Mode”…. Doesn’t make the car a Ferrari.
@@JeffBourke not at all, that's not how I see it. I see it as a very helpful tool. I usually color space transform V log to C log anyways. It's just one less process I'll have to do.

@@JacobLuevanoYeah its a $199 add on, but it does help if you are in a professional workflow. But then again if you're on a set that is using an Arri Alexa, you most likely have a better B or crash cam than the GH7. Which despite what all the reviewers say doesn't make a great crash cam

what is the possibility that Lumix/Panasonic makes a hotshoe shotgun mic - no cables just the hotshoe that would incorporate 32bit float?
I’ll ask them 😂 it’s a great idea!
🙏 thanks for review Matt
Does this camera timestamp footage & allow you to sync cameras?
$3700 AUD (body only) F… that! I’ll stick with my GH5II & Pro MF3 lens collection- still rocks! Maybe one day I’ll upgrade when the price comes down
This camera body does prores internally but the sony FX3 / FX6 don't. Sony is a fucking joke.
Easy to do a lot with a tiny little sensor....
Did you test the autofocus with an adapted lens? Specifically, I have a speedbooster and Sigma 18-35.
Not yet I don’t have an adapter available to test with
Great job. I do believe that phase detect AF is available in 4k 120 - but you lose subject detection.
Correct, tried to make that clear in the video but realized after filming that it sounded like I said Phase Detect when I said Face Detect haha
That thing looks sick!
The first box my MFT camera must check is small size...
does that xlr accessory work on the s5ii? also were you able to test the GH7 with a speed booster and how that affects the autofocus?
I don’t think the XLR2 will work on the S5ii, B&h is showing its only compatible with the GH7 😭
@@whoismatt 😭😭😭
At what park did you shoot?
18:17 Sony cameras?
Agreed, and it looks like Panasonic is going for pros with the inclusion of Arri Log
You say the GH7 is some weird niche product for high end productions. I counter to say that it should be the standard for videography kit. You don't get to tell people that a lesser model is more than enough.
@@POVwithRC OK, I'll bite. What do you really NEED that the GH7 offers but the G9 II doesn't?
@@danieldougan269Only thing that would push me towards the GH7 is the fan. Overheating anxiety during weddings and events is bad. I know G9II is not easy to overheat, but it's still a possibility.
Ok elephant in the room Matt, does it work with the sigma 18-35mm well with autofocus? if it does, its going into my cart.
What's the best newer lens for gh7 or best bang for your buck, I don't want to use a10 year old lens, I need brighter wider glass I just ordered the speed booster
"ill return it whenever they ask for it". HAHAHAHA🤣
Great review, I'd love to see a GH7X
is the prores raw actual 12 bit?
This SO FAR exceeds my needs it is ridiculous. But I'll get one for the PDAF, low light, and IBIS at some point when I can afford it. 100%
The very early shot walking through the park - was that on a gamble or was that with IBIS?

I hope the arri C log is coming to the S5II...
my ears!! lol,... I far from the micro four thirds from my Gh5s, and now full frame, but the GH7 having 32bit float audio is a huge wedding videographer wanted list as the zoom recorders are now switching to 32 bit float.
Might sell all my full frame stuff and go back to MFT. I just want filming to be easy.
thanks for this video. It is not a "con" because the GH7 is advertised as a Micro 4/3 camera. It would be a con if advertised as a full frame when in fact it is a 4/3 camera - or the other way around.
