  • I bought a 2017 Porsche Macan S and sold it again 6 months later. Why? Because even though the Macan is Porsche's most popular car ever, and there are a lot of great things about the Macan, it just didn't come close to what I expect from a Porsche.
    Watch the video for both random facts (lots of them), and my owner review of the 2017 Macan S (my 7th Porsche)

    I embarked on a thorough exploration of top-tier SUVs in search of the perfect vehicle, meticulously test-driving models like the Cayenne, X5, X3, GLE, and GLC. However, my SVU automotive odyssey reached its pinnacle the moment I grasped the wheel of a Macan S - it was an instant infatuation. The Macan S transcends the typical SUV experience; with its dynamic handling and responsiveness, especially in Sport and Sport+ modes, it exudes a palpable sense of power and agility.
    What truly sets the Macan S apart is its ingenious design. Featuring larger rear tyres and smaller front tyres, it effortlessly embraces the curves of the road, particularly evident when navigating the winding paths of Mount Dandenong. Every twist and turn reaffirmed the value of my investment, as the Macan S delivered an unparalleled driving experience that exceeded every expectation.

    I have owned various versions of the Macan - Turbo, GTS, S, Base and so on + a few hundred hours tracking them. I have had ZERO issues with them. The driving dynamics are fantastic (find one with PTV+). I have a small child and a dog - no problems with space. Buy a CPO vehicle or an extended warranty if it provides you piece of mind. Jump in, drive and enjoy. Some misinformation info in this video - including costs for various issues (timing chain bolts and transfer case). Yes- the SQ5 and the X3 M35/40i are also a great choice (i have owned both) BUT neither feels as special. Side note- cross shop the Alfa Stelvio if you prime target is chassis feel (its the best of the bunch). Drive them all and see what fits you best! Otherwise - great work on the video's!
    Drive what you enjoy!

    We rented a 2015 Macan S a couple of years ago on vacation, drove it for 4 days and loved it. I'm 6'3", my wife is 5'11" and my son is the same. We all fit just fine. We loved it so much we bought a 2018 GTS. The GTS sounds better than the S.

    I bought a 2016 Macan S December 2021 and so far no problems... Next week I have an appointment at Porsche dealer to extend warranty by another 2 years... This fun will cost 2500€ together with the preliminary 111 Point inspection.....
    With my limited experience so far, I can recommend the car. It looks good, it makes you look good :)
    Don't sneeze in the car otherwise you may press on the throttle inadvertently and beam instantly... fast car... :)

    I love the Macan. I rented it for a few days through the Porsche Drive app, and I discovered that the driver's seat is not comfortable. It caused me some back pain. That was the deal breaker for me. Too bad. It's a gorgeous car.

    • @cadreamdrives
      @cadreamdrives  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's such a bummer when that happens. I've had other cars where everything else was great, but I just couldn't get the seats to fit me. These days, seats tend to adjust in a million different directions, but I find that actually seems to make them more difficult to fit just right. Maybe I'm just weird that way :). In any case, thank you for watching and for your comment!

      Test drove the new Gen 3 S with 14 way seats for half a day. Extremely comfortable. 18 way seats also felt nice in a Cayenne they had. Currently with my order I specced the 14 ways, as the leather on the 18 ways bolsters tend to wear prematurely. Not sure why you guys think it’s uncomfortable? Adjustability is great, and the seats are some of the most comfortable I’ve been in. But it rlly is just personal preference.

    40 years ago my first porsche was a 73 914, since then the wife & I have owned seven 911's. We just purchased a 2015 Macan S. Early impressions are awesome. It's powerful enough, and rides like a dream. She's very smooth and quiet. We got our Macan with 50K miles and we paid under 30K out the door. Haters are going to hate, opinions are like @ss holes everybody has one.

    I can respect your point of view. For me, being a new driver for 1 year standing, I’ve only owned a 2020 mustang eco boost before it got totaled in a hydroplaning accident. I’m a musician (jazz bassist) & I love the trunk space for my music gear. I prefer the mid size suv over the Cayenne size. I even have the same 2017 Macan S volcanic grey color, gotta admit if it’s not in sport mode it’s not as spirited a drive. I do love the sound of the exhaust with the windows down. Also when cruising around it’s a pretty comfy ride. Got mine used 2 months ago at 79k miles and has only had a coolant leak so far. Crossing my fingers for no TCC leak!! The repair was $1400 at dealership but for me there’s no price tag for putting a smile on your face. So far there’s been no other issues. Maybe as I get more experience I will feel differently in the future. Apples to oranges of course. Thanks again for your thorough review.

      I’m so happy you’re enjoying your Macan S! They are great cars in many ways - and they are drop dead gorgeous!
      For me, the Macan never really made my heart beat faster - but that’s just my experience, and I’m sure it makes a lot of people very happy!
      Congratulations on the entry into Porsche ownership. That’s a special feeling - and a fairly exclusive club to be a member of!
      I’ve been lucky enough to own quite a few Porsches, and my one recommendation would be to find a good non-dealer mechanic in your area. Your wallet will thank you immensely over time.
      There are several great online forums for Porsche owners (rennlist.com is one of the biggest) and people are generally great about recommending local mechanics there.
      Good luck with the Macan S going forward!

    I got one as a loaner car surprisingly and it was pure agony. the car drives way slower than it's actually going, the steering wheel bruised my hands, the ac barely works, and the brakes are so good they suck. what I will give this car though is the handling was astronomical and it's very roomy for such a car, so don't shove it away, but keep in mind I would never buy one for myself.

    Seeing your new upload is literally the highlight of my morning! Thanks for these insightful vids! I have so many things to say and ask about the Macan S. I’ve always been a fan of small performance-oriented crossovers, and the Macan was my dream car. I currently drive the Mazda CX-5 (with Turbo), and went to test drive the Macan S you had - same as you, I was very disappointed - literally agree with everything you said. I know that for the new model year, the S is the new GTS, and the GTS is the new Turbo. With the facelift, interior refresh, and the added power, would you say the new Mecan S is finally a proper Porsche now for the price? I am also looking at the CLC 43 and X3 M40i - very torn on which one I should set as my goal for the next a couple of years. How would you compare the three, in terms of handling and reliability? Thank you so so much!

    • @cadreamdrives
      @cadreamdrives  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your kind feedback - It means more than you can imagine!
      I have not yet driving the new '22 Macans, I like the way they look (but then again, looks were never the issue with the Macans!), and the interior updates are nice (but still fairly minor). I am very happy to see that they added a spot for your sunglasses / phone on the center console :). For me, the main issues were the overall blah-ness of pretty much everything that affects the driving experience. My Macan S never put a smile on my face and it never made me feel excited in any way. I'm going to guess that a slight bump in horsepower isn't going to change that much. My X4 M40i is magnitudes more fun and engaging (the X3 version should be the same) and a much better car for the money. I've also had a GLC300 Coupe, and that car surprised me with how much I liked it. I had the most base model you could get, so it wasn't exactly a performance car, but it felt luxurious and drove very well. I would definitely check out the the 43 version of that model before buying a Macan. I would also look into the Jaguars. The F-Pace and the new, facelifted E-Pace can offer tremendous experiences in the right configurations. And for something truly different, The Alfa Romeo Stelvio will likely make you smile all day long as well!

      I also had a chance to test drive a ‘19 Macan S about three weeks ago. My expectations ran so high given all the positive online reviews. Well, test-drive day arrived and I really wanted to love the Macan. But in the end, it sadly didn’t speak to me. It was overall a pretty unexceptional ride, exactly the same way Henrik described it. It reminded a lot of an Audi Q5. For a Porsche, the car totally lacks excitement. The salesman informed me the ‘22 version would feel the same as far as its driving dynamics, just a bit more power (up about 35 HP).
      The next day it was a trip to the BMW dealer. I test drove a ‘21 BMW X3 M40i and did not look back. What a world of difference in terms of driving dynamics, throttle response, adaptive suspension that goes from very compliant to stiff based on your drive modes (very noticeable changes). Steering is exactly what I expected on a car for driving enthusiasts. Its technological features are better, as well as its rear seat/cargo space. It also has the ability to be tame, very compliant on rough roads and even more fuel efficient than the Macan. It makes a great daily driver. We got ours delivered just a few days ago and we’re totally stoked.

    I had a 2017 Macan S just like yours but no sunroof and black interior. I had it three years. Nice car but overpriced. I had multiple recalls and problems with it. The Porsche dealer was pompous and unprofessional during warranty service. It was too much of a headache so I traded it for a RC-F. Not to mention the Macan is build on a VW/Audi chassis. With a VW transmission not a true PDK from a 911. And Audi engines starting in 2018. I’ll save for a 911.

    I managed to hold on to mine for 14 months hoping against hope it would somehow get better. But it didn't. So it went, along with a £20k loss in that time. I agree with most of this as I mentioned in another review of this car. It is a good car in many ways but it is NOT a sports car and it might have the build quality of a Porsche but it does not drive like one. It is by some way the worst car in the Porsche line up and sells here in the UK mainly on the Porsche name and its snob value in some eyes. It handles terribly - OK I had the diesel version (just as fast as the petrol equivalent but uses half the fuel) so it was even more nose heavy and lumbering. This car does not like changing direction. The gearbox is clunky and noisy from starting, the brakes are very "grabby" at low speed making it very hard to drive slowly in traffic say. The ride in Sport mode is like a steamroller. Porsche uses the profits from Macan to pay for Boxsters (told to me by a sales person at a dealer). And the sales service and servicing was terrible. That might just be Scotland though. Overall a real DUD. If you want an SUV (and I now realise I don't) buy the Audi instead. But really, don't. Just buy a BMW 5 series. It outclasses the Macan in every single aspect.

      @@cadreamdrives A lot of Porsche owners and those who "aspired" to be, thought I must be raving mad not to like the Macan. But having owned two excellent Boxsters, (both with actual Porsche flat-6 engines) and done some track driving in them, I know what Porsches can do. So when I was told this was the same, I fell for it. Stupidly I did not take a test drive (my local dealer ignored me) and instead drove 500 miles to collect the car from England. On the way home I was starting to get worried that maybe I had made a £45k mistake. Over time we came to the conclusion, as you did, that they are fantastically well made cars and a joy to sit in, but if you want something a bit more interesting to drive and justify that hefty price tag, it ain't a Macan. Yes I know some people love them. Like the lady who didn't get what the paddles on the wheel of her Panamera were for (now THAT is proper car). But objectively it was the second worse car I've ever driven, beaten only by my dad's 1980 Austin Allegro (you never got that in the US but it made a Pacer look positively desirable). You know what pissed me off the most? I wrote to Porsche's UK CEO and various others to point out to them that the Macan was degrading the Porsche name - not even a response. I reached the conclusion they simply don't care about drivers any more. Their model range is looking pretty dated - the only modern car they have is the Taycan and that is tanking. Macan and Cayenne are VW/Audi not far under the skin, Boxster/Cockster/911 are all much the same except for engine location, and all at least 25 years old. There seems to be nothing new in the pipeline other than ever more expensive rehashes of older models. Porsche is skating on very thin ice. Hence my return to classic BMWs - 5 and 3 series. Now have a 5 year old 335d X drive. 313 bhp and eats most Porsches before breakfast. Beautifully designed and made cars, drive stunningly well. About to do 4000 miles around Europe on decent roads. Can't wait.

    These small SUVs are still Porsche, they were never meant to mimic a 911. Sporty design... for middle class. Thats what its for.

    • @cadreamdrives
      @cadreamdrives  ปีที่แล้ว

      I get that - I didn’t expect it to be a 911. But my old, 2012 Cayenne S has way more driving feel (and that thing is a truck) - and don’t get me started on my BMW X4 M40i. It blows the Macan S out of the water in every driving category.
      But the Macan sure is pretty!

      The Macan S did have a beautiful exhaust node - you just had to be outside the car to hear it...
      But few (stock) cars beat the M40i (before they started limiting the sound). They do indeed make you grin every time you drive one!

    • @llf4913

      well you can go for the sound and only have power to two wheels or have the Macan and the superior handling. Definitely your choice.

    By comparing to Cayenne and X4, you never mention what exactly this Macan S can’t give you? In your another video, you complained as well the recall (in fact you sound more like complaining the dealer instead of the car itself) … though you tried hard to sound fair!

    • @cadreamdrives
      @cadreamdrives  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Recall issue was 100% about Porsche and not really about the car itself, but the Macan S pretty much failed to put a smile on my face in any scenario (except, when looking at it). I found it to be a very average and boring car with zero driving excitement, and the cabin feel and quality was nowhere near what I have gotten in pretty much every other Porsche I have owned.
      I get that it’s their entry level model - it just isn’t worthy of the Porsche badge in my opinion.

    Drove one and was not impressed. Horrible seats, uncomfortable ride, poor quality cheap interior, way overpriced. Meh, I like the Mercedes GLE AMG way more. That’s a far classier ride with performance and better looks. Only the 911 is decent and I hate the new body style and prices increases.

      OMG...the seats. SO uncomfortable for me--despite trying to adjust them every which way they can be adjusted. Dealer sales person told me this is a common complaint among small framed, thin people.

    This is pure click bait on your part. …..“Subscribe!” “Click below!”. … This is a Porsche small SUV and the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Were you expecting the “911” experience from this? It’s a f’n SUV just like your Cayenne but smaller. Yeah, I clicked on your bait infused headline and I’m dumber for it. JFC…

    • @cadreamdrives
      @cadreamdrives  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for checking out the video! I’m sorry you felt it was “clickbait”. Everyone has their own opinion about the Macan S, and for me it fell short. Everything about it (except its looks) was just forgettable to me - and not up to the usual Porsche experience.
      I did not expect a 911 experience from this, but I expected some “Porscheness” - and there was none to be found. The interior was not up to usual Porsche standards, and the driving experience was very bland.
      It’s not a bad car - it’s just not worth the Porsche premium to me.
      The BMW X4M40i is infinitely more fun and sporty to drive, with an intoxicating exhaust note - and just a better car in every way - and that’s every bit as much of an SUV as the Macan is.
      Of course, all of this is just my opinion. Many people love their Macans, and that’s fantastic! For me, it just didn’t bring what I felt it should.

      He he. I have a 2005 Toyota 4Runner that I have been HOPING would bite the bullet because I am bored with it--lthough it is still fun to drive. I'm the original owner, bought it new, and I have never put a dime into it over the past 19 years other than normal, regular maintenance. Can't kill a Toyota--at least not the older 4Runners.
