Alphonso dunn is a great artist! He's a science teacher and his channel focuses on linear drawings, adding texture, dimension, perspective, anatomy, shades and more with just one pen.
love life drawing was the first yt channel i went to for figure drawing, it helped me get into the flow, and understand how everything worked, its very beginner friendly
Its really nice to see another person learning art on the internet instead of Just art masters. It gives a levels of relatabillity that can't be gotten easily
I remember when a bunch of kiddos in a discord told me they didn't learn anything about basic anatomy in their art classes and i went "bet" and did some art streams to help them because some of them didn't understand certain tutorials. I miss it 😢
This is my biggest problem with art classes! Depending on your course a lot of them skip over the fundamentals and go straight to techniques to make your art pieces, which limits your improvement simply because you dont know the basics! I’ve had to teach myself due to the fact that i simply didnt know how to translate my ideas onto paper with the techniques I was taught
Hot tip: if you like anime/manga/manwha art, try looking up art terms in Korean or Japanese. I found alot of good artists that way and alot have English subtitles.
Search terms to try. Remember to translate them into koren or Japanese. Koren tends to work better for me. : illustration making is a big one. A lot of them use that term. Illustration process and digital illustration I think work too. For tutorials, I found "how to draw" to be the better thing to search over just art tutorials.
@harshitakumar7191 TH-cam will not show my comments where I give the channel names. Let me try again. Manga materials: good for tutorials and critiques. Rinotuna: has alot of his streams here, including his tutorial stream where he breaks down his process. The instructions are written in English and Koren. JINWU: I learned alot from just watching their speedpaints. Also, they are great artist, check them out. Pixiv: They have alot of interviews with artists with speedpaints of there work in the background. Yoneyama Mai: a very well known artist who also has a TH-cam channel with speedpaints. I had another but youtube is not allow me to type there at for some reason. I typed this out like three types. T-T
Winged canvas is my favorite channel for anatomy and basically everything art-learning related. Not only do they have free videos online, but if you want even further instruction, they are an art school as well. The artist Jessie from winged canvas is my favorite, but they also have other instructors with different styles, strengths and backgrounds. You can watch their full streams for instruction and laughs, or just the stream highlights which tend to not be much longer then 12 minutes. They are very informative and helpful. And funny, too. Seriously recommend them to you and anyone else reading this.
@@yaz9938 glad to hear I'm not the only winged canvas fan here! I really love the videos teaching how to connect animal anatomy onto a human body. Very helpful for D&D drawings lol
I love the content you put out. It feels like just genuine excitement for what you do and not just endless grind mode. I love it. Thank you for the space youve created!
thank you!! I just love drawing and creating and want to share that passion with others in as friendly as a way as possible!! so happy that things are approachable, and thank you for watching!
I've started posting my art online again after taking a two-year break, and have been wanting to start enhancing my anatomy skills and watch more videos. This was such a good and useful breakdown! You have such an easy voice to listen to and really make me excited to start learning again. I added so many of these videos to my to watch list and I worked on a piece of art while watching this which was great!
i revisit a lot of your videos frequently but ive been revisiting this video an extra lot lately, and i really wanted to thank you for it. this gave me the push to really start studying my art and trying to get better. i admire your work a ton and it inspires me so much and it made me want to get better. your videos always motivate me to try new things with my art and i even picked up painting again. i almost always have your videos in the background while i study, and it makes it more fun. your videos have even gotten me back into sketchbooking regularly, and being kinder to myself when they dont turn out perfect. my entire perspective has been changed in the best possible way and i just cannot thank you enough for sharing your art with us.
During the part around 12:31 I just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POINTING THIS OUT! I’m currently learning how to do anatomy and when I heard the tip of trying to understand the form in a 3d kind of way, it actually improved my anatomy a bunch ☺️ I’m still practicing but TYSM ❤
Personally that tip never worked for me-just not how my brain works-but I love seeing when people say this because everything somebody says this I feel happy for them :) good luck on your art journey and keep up the good work❤
I decided to go back to drawing 'cause my heart was begging for it but I got lost with the process, you have no idea how needed this was 'cause I was looking for a video like this❤ so thank you sm! Btw, perspective being highly important is so true, It's insane how much it helps
You know shay, your the main channel I use to improve my art! Your anatomy and style is so beautiful and Ive used it to help me gain motivation! You and your work is a large inspiration for me and im sure im not the only one that feels this way
What a thoughtful and jam packed video! Thank you for all of your resources, they are so helpful. I’ve not tried drawing figures for years, as tend to stick to plants and nature, but I feel after watching this I wanna get back into learning again ^_^ and yesss to nostalgic youtube content… ❤
YAYYY you can do this!! just start simple and slowly build, and before you know it you'll gain confidence and realize you have what it takes! glad you found this video useful!!
men just by hearing I can tell we live in the same timeline u mention those channel make it feel so nostalgia. Cant say how grateful i am for those ppl
Kaycem is super relatable: I got injured halfway through an art course in 2019 (a tendinitis) so I had to rethink art but I’ve spent some time learning Blender & want to get back into 2D
i’ve fallen into the opposite trap where i jump into finished pieces (following so closely to references like it’s the law, sometimes just tracing things like hands) without warm ups or figure practicing regularly. i find that it takes forever that way but i’m such a perfectionist - thank you for these resources on getting back to the basics and finding the fun in it :)
Thank you soso much! I've been drawing for years but I came to realise I literally know nothing about art and I'm trying my best to learn again and I don't care if I'm beginner again its all part of my journey!!! Your art is so impressive! Thank you for introducing us to such a great artists this was so helpful
If you ever do a step by step anatomy tutorial I would love that!! Your art is amazing. I’m taking art classes in college but I feel like I’m not improving but you inspire me to draw more!! Thank you!! ❤️❤️
whenever I watch your videos, it makes me want to draw! I love the way you explain things and your videos really help me understand the more technical aspects of drawing
Excellent video! This was so good for me (a good refresher) as I'm trying to get back into drawing as my anatomy skills had became rusty from not practicing. Commenting for the algorithm 🤌
tysm for doing this video, it motivate me to continue learning anatomy and some other things to improve my art, a few days ago i proposed myself to start learning drawing on a serious way because i felt like i wasnt improving, and this video really inspired me to continue learning tysm!! ♡
Thank you for this video, I just got burnt out pretty bad from trying to learn anatomy on my own through yt. There are so many little tips in this video that Im sure are really gonna help me keep my sanity in the future :)
even though I am in art school, its been all fundamentals for a while and its been so long since ive even drawn a figure that, trying to right now is so discouraging. i dont feel i even can anymore. was assigned to fill a couple sketch book pages with figure sketches and ended up not even turning it in because i was so frustrated with my lack of ability to do it anymore. even a couple months ago i was doing fine, but now it feels so foreign and impossible> HOWEVER, this video has been a great reminder that everyone needs to take a step backwards sometimes and that its okay to need to re-learn
Lovely video, thanks for taking the time out of your art journey to help other fellow artists who are struggling with where they should be starting to improve their work and fundamentals 😊 Im always having to remind myself to go back to my roots when i beginfeeling frustrated with myself and burnt out ❤ Goodluck with your learning!
when you listed out the old but gold art youtubers in the day, a wave of nostalgia washed over me (why did that make me sound so old lmao). I remember those times when I, just like you, was very eager and loving every single thing I was learning and discovering. I sometimes go back to those videos when I seek motivation and it does the trick alll the time. I'm now what you would call an "intermediate" artist, not quite there but not clueless on fundamentals anymore. And I've been really stuck for the past year if I'm being honest. I feel like I've studied so hard that I don't even remember what I was studying for. I've covered the fundamentals and discovered my artstyle, now what? And the problem isnt even the lack of choices and things I like to draw, it's actually the overflow of so many thing I want to do that everything I make isn't satisfying unless it covers it all, and ain't that just impossible? I want to draw characters, make a story, do amazing backgrounds, but I also want to animate, make portraits, do concept arts. I like all kinds of artstyles: painterly, animated and simple, a mix of both, detailed. What about genre: Dark, gritty, and angsty? Light, wholesome and bittersweet? Action-packed and adventurous? Love them all. And sure nothing's stopping me from making all of those things, but I do want it to at least be less scattered y'know? Narrow it down a bit. Like, Pick a struggle lmao. Honestly now that I think about it, my biggest problem is probably perfectionism lol.
BRUH I totally get your struggle!! I feel like there’s so much I want to do too, and still feeling like my art is not quite at that professional and polished level yet. AND YEAH perfectionism is our worst enemy!! For me it makes me fixated on the smallest thing and waste so much time trying to fix and area that it ultimately just makes the drawing worse. The best thing we can do is focus on the moment, and what we are doing right now, and just create because we love it and enjoy, rather than trying to perfect it or wrangle it in. Through our exploration of different media and forms, we may find the format that best works for us, but I feel like when you’re still in an intermediate or learning phase it can be really harmful to limit yourself. It can be great to build a cohesive body of work and really great professionally to be able to show your work and be able to connect it, but that doesn’t mean you cant continue to explore different things in the side and in your personal practice!! Sorry if this was rambly, is something I really struggle with as well as an emerging artist that likes a little bit of everything!! Might make a video topic about this, do you mind if I quote you?
your channel is sooooo helpful and i keep trying to watch others but you are just goated and they dont compare!!! seriously seriously ridiculously grateful for u
my issue is that i have a ton of things i want to draw, and i can sit and watch these videos all day but can't for the life of me pick up a pen or pencil. i feel like i've just lost so much love for doing art because i'm extremely critical of it. i don't know what to do now, or if it's just a lost cause
Your art videos have inspired me to pursue art again and take an interest in traditional media too. I want to try using acrylic gouache since my art teacher in high school once said I might like gouache, but I never had the chance to try it and seeing you use it made me excited to try using it too. I want to try it soon and get back into sketching in a sketchbook and go after art as passionately as I used to. Love your videos!
Thank youuu so much😭. I just discovered you with this video and it has been so helpful. Mostly because the amount of content there is out there can be so overwhelming, but this is such a great guide that makes my journey easier. I often feel like I have started this art journey too late, and I won’t have enough time to be an artist someday, but videos like this where you can see the process of someone is truly inspiring and gets me to be more confident on the process.
thank you for watching my videos, and I am happy that they inspire you! also, your art or skills are not determined by your age. so many people start earlier in life, or later in life, so try not to beat yourself up! it's never too late to start, especially if you have the passion and the drive to get better! just start drawing and making it a part of your routine again, nothing too time heavy in the beginning. Give yourself a chance to explore what schedule will work best for you and build a habit of just doing a little bit per day. I would tackle one drawing fundamental per month and just take it simple and slow. Don't overwhelm yourself with learning everything in a week. Slow and sustainable habits make for a lifestyle of learning and creating that serves you best. I mentioned a ton of drawing resources in this video so I hope they help you out! best of luck, don't stop drawing!
❤Thank you Shay for taking the time to make this content for us. This was super helpful information. Being a OG art graduate as well I have taken the time to go towards photography and being a nail artist instead and now coming back to art after 15yrs this is a great start to get back 😅. Thank you 🙏🏻💕
Thank you. I appreciate all the informative resources that you gave and how you you explain are in a simple form. God bless you keep drawing and have a good 😊👍.
Excellent Video Shay! You've got a new subscriber for sure! ❤ I'd also like to add illustrator Tim Mcburnie to a list to anyone who's learning anatomy or just art in general. Tim has this extraordinary ability to explain detailed processes in such a constructive yet VERY simple manner! Especially if you're learning the Loomis framework, Tim does a fantastic job in fixing gaps you may have when reading Loomis's books.
Fantastic videos and tutorials, Shay. I love this channel. Thank you for sharing your experience and insights! ...and favourite online learning resources. Instant sub. Also, your drawings are super amazing.
quickposes does let you filter out nude and partially nude figures in the timed practice and random poses! So if anyone was interested in using it but doesn’t want nude/partially nude the option is there
this video is pure gold :D, It was rlly helpfull thank you so much for putting this out for other artist, I would like to also share a channel that I have been watching lately in case anybody is interested, his channel is called chommang drawing, I think he is korean and beside the lenguage barrier, I think the way he explains every concept in such a chill way makes It rlly easy to pick up, even tho I have seen other channels talking about similar aproaches, idk he just makes It rlly easy to go through, at least for me, I started watching kaycem bc of this video, rlly nice discover and again thank you, I think this video is something I will comeback from time to time just to get my things in order, thanks
Hello! I love your sketches they are so good! I noticed many artist do start drawing the figure by drawing the torso first instead of the head, why is that? I'm currently taking a figure class with Will Weston, and his method is similar to yours, keep it up!🌺
Starting with the torso makes it easier to capture the gesture of the pose more accurately!! Your torso twists and turns and is more expressive. When we start with the head, it often leads to stiffer figures, and is a lot harder to change! And when you start with the head often times you get caught up in the details and get too attached, therefore it’s harder to change it in the long run 👍
Omg thank you so much for replying and for the info, now I understand why and it makes a lot of sense, I really appreciate it!! I really love your style, if possible could you create a tutorial video in the future about drawing the figure\gesture. Your sketches are so GOOD!, and I'm sorry for my annoyance 🥲@@sketchesofshay
so glad to have come across this video whilst ive been seeking ways to improve, all the recommendations have been super helpful and your tips as well!! ^ ^
Hi! I love your vidéos and your art style so much! I discover your Chanel Last week-end and i'm only watching your vidéos since. 😁 Thank you so much for thèse références. You give me a new motivation to comeback to my sketchbook! (So for my little english.. I'm french) Kisses
Dude, your art is amazing! It must have taken lots of time, practise and effort to get to this point. I’m personally not that good, but I just started seriously getting into drawing just a little while ago. Anatomy and hair have been the most difficult for me. Anatomy mainly due to its ‘complicated details’. Also, you’re soo underrated, you deserve more subs!
this vid was so helpful! I am absolutely terrible at anatomy and I've been trying to practice but it seems no matter how much I practice I'm still bad 😭
I haven’t finished the video yet so I’m not sure if you’ve covered this but I wanted to ask-How do you keep your lines intentional? To elaborate, I find that one of the biggest differences between beginner and more advanced sketching is being intentional about lines and being confident. I’ve heard that just practicing is helpful but I wanted to know if you had any other tips that can help hone in on that during practice :]
In my own works I find that I struggle to know exactly where I want the artwork to go and that leads to a bunch of hesitant lines and then a lot of erasing. I want to have a better understanding of anatomy so that I can a wide variety of body types because I find humans so beautiful but I don’t think I can properly do them justices with my current art skill set. If you can, tips on how you became more confident in art would super help!
this would make for a great future video topic!! I struggle a lot with confidence in my work and technique as well so I would love to share my experience!
If you do make a video about it in the future, I look forward to seeing it! I think it’s a common struggle for artists of any skill level and it would be really helpful!@@sketchesofshay
I love all of your artworks so much omg!! You're truly an inspiration for me :o May I ask what sketchbook do you use? Or the mg of the page? Really like the feeling of it!
If someone wants to draw figures like you, and knows absolutely 0 about drawing in any way, what would you say is the best place to start? is it practicing form with 3d shapes or gesture drawings? or actual in depth human anatomy?
These resources are good, but I'd personally go further back: Leonardo, Michelangelo. Things can get a little flat and generic when all of the references are squished into a smaller period of time. Just my opinion ;)
the old masters definitely had a lot of knowledge! it's always great to learn from a variety of artists from across the world, there's no one right way to interpret the figure
tysm for this video!! i've been surviving solely on force live streams (which arereally good too you should check them out) so your list is really helpful ❤
i learned that by just watching people draw, or looking at things my brain just kinda absorbs the shaped and understands how they work, so even just surrounding yourself with art works i guess hahaha

your channel is sooooo helpful and i keep trying to watch others but you are just goated and they dont compare!!! seriously seriously ridiculously grateful for u
I’m so happy you find it helpful!! Thank you for watching my videos 💖
my issue is that i have a ton of things i want to draw, and i can sit and watch these videos all day but can't for the life of me pick up a pen or pencil. i feel like i've just lost so much love for doing art because i'm extremely critical of it. i don't know what to do now, or if it's just a lost cause
thank you so much! i love watching you draw and it’s always motivating watching your videos 🫶
you're welcome!! I am glad you enjoy them!!
I thought I was already subscribed to most big art accounts yet you've introduced me to new ones 😮
yayyy!! glad I could share some new accounts with you!
I FOLLOWED YOU ON INSTAGRAM but I didn't know you had youtube channel until now 😭 I LOVE YOUR ART SM 💞💞💞💞
Thanks!
thank you so much for the super thanks! I really appreciate it michael!
I’m so happy you feel encouraged and inspired!! You got this!
first of all, i really looove your videos, they energize me
thank you for watching my videos, and I am happy that they inspire you! also, your art or skills are not determined by your age. so many people start earlier in life, or later in life, so try not to beat yourself up! it's never too late to start, especially if you have the passion and the drive to get better! just start drawing and making it a part of your routine again, nothing too time heavy in the beginning.
@@sketchesofshaythank you so much for your words, they helped a lot!
Ur amazing at making art work I can never do this but I'm trying
such a great video! I learned a bunch, including how I've been pronouncing brunet wrong for so so long
❤Thank you Shay for taking the time to make this content for us. This was super helpful information. Being a OG art graduate as well I have taken the time to go towards photography and being a nail artist instead and now coming back to art after 15yrs this is a great start to get back 😅. Thank you 🙏🏻💕
Seems like you have a lot of great experience to pull from to get back into art! Happy to hear that I could be a part of your journey 💖
Thank you. I appreciate all the informative resources that you gave and how you you explain are in a simple form. God bless you keep drawing and have a good 😊👍.
thank you so much! I am happy you found the video informative
Excellent Video Shay! You've got a new subscriber for sure! ❤
I'd also like to add illustrator Tim Mcburnie to a list to anyone who's learning anatomy or just art in general.
Tim has this extraordinary ability to explain detailed processes in such a constructive yet VERY simple manner!
Especially if you're learning the Loomis framework, Tim does a fantastic job in fixing gaps you may have when reading Loomis's books.
OMG thank you for sharing this! I will have to check them out!! And thank for subscribing !🥺💖
Hi! I just wanted to say that you inspire me so much and I love watching your content while drawing
im so happy that my content inspires you! thank you so much for watching!
So if anyone was interested in using it but doesn’t want nude/partially nude the option is there
thank you for sharing that!! that's so useful to know, I appreciate it!
I’m literally in awe of your sketches ❤
Thank you
Thanks for sharing! Very useful!
Istebrak is a really good critique account, but she’s really harsh (not unfair), so I would only recommend her to those with thick skin 💕
tysm for sharing all the artists and sites, its so useful! ❤
I’m happy to help!!
this video is pure gold :D, It was rlly helpfull thank you so much for putting this out for other artist, I would like to also share a channel that I have been watching lately in case anybody is interested, his channel is called chommang drawing, I think he is korean and beside the lenguage barrier, I think the way he explains every concept in such a chill way makes It rlly easy to pick up, even tho I have seen other channels talking about similar aproaches, idk he just makes It rlly easy to go through, at least for me, I started watching kaycem bc of this video, rlly nice discover and again thank you, I think this video is something I will comeback from time to time just to get my things in order, thanks
I’ll have to check that channel out! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Thankyou these resources, it means a lot for beginner artists! ❤❤
you're so welcome!! glad I could be helpful in your journey!
Aahhh thank you!
I had really been wanting to improve my anatomy, so all of the channels you recommended are so helpful!
yayyy so happy I could help!
@@sketchesofshay ! :D !
so glad to have come across this video whilst ive been seeking ways to improve, all the recommendations have been super helpful and your tips as well!! ^ ^
YAYY so happy that I could help!
Honestly I learned almost everything I know from TH-cam, practice, and Pinterest.
Exactly !!💖
Wow! Thank you so much!
Hi! I love your vidéos and your art style so much! I discover your Chanel Last week-end and i'm only watching your vidéos since. 😁
Thank you so much for thèse références. You give me a new motivation to comeback to my sketchbook!
(So for my little english.. I'm french)
Kisses
Thanks! I'm just learning this, I'm a begginer, very useful ❤
im so happy this is useful to you, happy drawing!
Thank you for this 🙏🙏😁 ive been using Michael Hampton and Mike Mattessi videos mostly. 🙌🙌🙌
This video helps a lot
you're welcome!! and OOO I'll have to check those folks out!
Also, you’re soo underrated, you deserve more subs!
thank you so much!! it did take a long time, but anyone can do it if they just stay consistent ! you got this :)
@@sketchesofshay Thank you :).
Omggg this is amazing thank you ao much for your rec!!
YAY you're welcome! so happy to help~
THANK U SO MUCHCHH!!
happy to help!
0:42 may I ask what pen you use here?
I think it’s Windsor and newton but I’m not sure
Great video a actual video that i will use the tips to help me with my art :)
this video was super helpful! i wrote down all of your tips and channels, thank you
awesome! happy studying!!💖💕
Thank u so much! This helped a lot and definitely gave me some confidence in my own art :]
YAY so happy it helped!
this vid was so helpful! I am absolutely terrible at anatomy and I've been trying to practice but it seems no matter how much I practice I'm still bad 😭
It takes time!! I would really recommend starting off simple (like the Tom Fox mannequin) and taking it slow! 💖
You got this!
I'm in awe with your pen! What brand/type is it? id love to utilize something similar! ^^
whats your tip on proportions? Knowing perspective and knowing the forms will be helpful or are the practises for learning proportions too?
I would suggest you check out the resources and channels I have linked! they probably have a lot better information to share than myself

Whipped out the good ol BIC ball point pen and I knew I stood no chance😂
Ty for the tips😊
Thank you for this great content! What pen are you using for your sketching in the first half of the video?
The tombow fudenosuke brush pen!
I love all of your artworks so much omg!! You're truly an inspiration for me :o May I ask what sketchbook do you use? Or the mg of the page? Really like the feeling of it!
I use Talens Art Creation Sketchbook and Pentalic Travelers Sketchbook in this video 👍
Thank you so much!!
Your Art is Awesome!!
Thank you!
Thank you for all teh resources. Love your videos and drawings=3
you're welcome!! and thank you so much for watching!
If someone wants to draw figures like you, and knows absolutely 0 about drawing in any way, what would you say is the best place to start? is it practicing form with 3d shapes or gesture drawings? or actual in depth human anatomy?
This video will be sooo helpful❤
i was waiting for this!! i love your art style and your method of doing art, and i wanna get better at art myself... this is a great help :))
so happy you found this useful, best of luck with your studies!
i love your energy
WOOOOOSHAY ART
I hope to sell cards and stickers :) you're other video really helped me...
Thanks, I love the Vid so far! What pen are u using?
I think in this video I use a regular BiC ballpoint pen and tombow fudenosuke brush pens 🫡💖
@@sketchesofshay thank you very much ! :)
Thanks
Thank you for the donation!!🥺💖
These resources are good, but I'd personally go further back: Leonardo, Michelangelo. Things can get a little flat and generic when all of the references are squished into a smaller period of time. Just my opinion ;)
the old masters definitely had a lot of knowledge! it's always great to learn from a variety of artists from across the world, there's no one right way to interpret the figure
Tomfoxdraws made a book, personally I learned a lot from him in his book. Wedging specifically
I’ll have to check it out!! I really like the way that he draws and explains forms 💖
@@sketchesofshay Yes! It’s so helpful. He’s the main reason I can draw from imagination now lol
tysm for this video!! i've been surviving solely on force live streams (which arereally good too you should check them out) so your list is really helpful ❤
Ooo I’ll check ‘em out!
Another channel that I find hard to pass over anymore is 'Tim Mcburnie - The Drawing Codex'.
Thank you for the recc! I’ll have to check it out 💖
thank you for this video
i learned that by just watching people draw, or looking at things my brain just kinda absorbs the shaped and understands how they work, so even just surrounding yourself with art works i guess hahaha
This is so true!! Learning by demonstrations can be so valuable 💖
