im still working on my style but my art is becoming more and more me since i stopped caring about what everyone elses looked like its so fun seeing different art styles everywhere :33
Stressing out over having a style is such a distraction from growing your skills. You can have a wide range of your style or even multiple different styles at once, what’s important is that you HAVE FUN! A few years ago I was obsessed with detailed art styles, now I prefer it simple and cartoonish but I still have that skill from the detailed era (lol) I was in and can mix if I think it works for the project I work on.
Same. After the pandemic started i felt as if i had lost my sparkle, and my style along with it. I spent almost three years obsessed with finding my style. After it, i just kinda gave up and decided i would draw in whatever way i felt like at the moment, and after that, my style came naturally
I completely agree with how social media affects your art style. It wasn’t until I showed someone my drawings, and they total me it was really similar to manhwa art. It's not a bad thing, but it broke my heart. It is not what I wanted when I started out, and it was the reason why I was having a hard time like my art. Manhwa art is beautiful, but it's not the path I want/ed to do. It takes time, but I feel like I am able to find what I like now!
i went thru the same when someone said i have an anime style, i never saw my art that way... i dont hate it, i like anime, but i am heavily inspired by disney and russians animations
I really agree with some of the identity crisis bits, especially as so many of us work in different mediums and feel like you’re doing something entirely different with each one.
I think my art style is pretty developed, I’m still working on it but I’ve come to a point where I’m happy with it. But the identity crisis is something I STILL deal with from time to time. Imposter syndrome is also a major problem. My art style truly developed for me when I decided that it doesn’t need to be perfect. My lines are sketchy and I use a thin brush so I have to add line weight by going over lines again. Which is something I never would’ve done when I was just starting out. I’m now 10x more happy with myself and my art after doing that. Letting go of perfection is SO important.
Literally me: idk what the heck my art style is. This is why I tried to make a pinterest board of drawing / coloring styles that inspire me and then seeing my inspiration images, I would start figuring out what I like. I recently started school tho so I feel like my free time goes for napping instead doing anything creative but hopefully my lazy bum will start learning drawing again etc lol.
no matter how many times ive drawn on my tablet it just doesnt feel like its ME. so ive come back to my roots, paper and pen. ive looked over my old sketchbooks. and i think im going to stay with paper. but youve also made me realise how much i compared myself to other artists, wanted their style so much ive forgotten my own. im glad i looked at those sketchbooks, reminded myself of who i am, and im glad ive watched this video!
I actually have been having a mild crisis when around the time. I felt that you nailed on the head on reverting back to the self. Because what I think happens more common in a vast world is that we consistently feel that if we don't match or above our peers or inspos then we feel that are behind. I also notice that people see others success without realizing the many years it takes to get to the skills they have. Some people are quite early while some very late in their life. The originality is that it's "you" no one has lived your life and that's your biggest advantage. By having your story you get to share your world view with all you have gathered and felt no matter how you express it ❤🎉
I am still working on anatomy and finding my art style as an artist, I love sketching little doodles and see what characters I can come up with and also making a Pinterest board. But I love your videos Shay. And also side note: sometimes I do feel a little lost as an artist because when ever I draw something and then step back I tend to judge my artwork before it’s finished and that’s just the perfectionist in me, but I am working on that. 😖
love how much you touched on the benefits of plain air; if it's possible, i think people should do it as much as they can. the speed drawing is so beautiful and warm. the colors are just *cozy*
thank you so much critique! plein air has definitely been a game changer in how I paint and describe light. I really want to do it more this fall when the weather gets cooler!
This was so helpful to hear honestly. I spent my entire childhood and teen years believing I had to know my style asap + i couldn't learn from other people because it was treated like it was copying taboo. But this video is IMMENSELY helpful to hear in my adult years with art because I feel far less afraid to study and practice. I only wish this type of advice was given when I was growing up aside from a lot of the angry advice people gave years and years ago.
I completely resonate with you. I always felt like I had to come up with things on my own, but ever since I've learned more and spoke to actual professionals, everyone draws inspiration from other work and are constantly trying to develop their work. It never really ends, but we find purpose in the process. I wish you the best in the next steps of your journey!
Hello! I stumbled upon your video about your character Saul, and I immediately fell in love! I'm Brazilian, and my God, I've never loved watching a video so much in my entire life. Your drawings are so beautiful, They're cute, and Saul seems like such a sweet character! I can't wait to see more of him and keep up with your amazing content. You're so creative! ❤
hii shay!! you probably wont see this, but so far you're one of the artists i especially look up to. everytime i remember how you've grown as an artist, how amazing your art is, you just inspire me like no other artist does. i hope u keep growing as an artist and have the most amazing days, thank u for always inspiring me :D
I also think the whole debate around "art styles" is something mostly beginners think about (and something the art community obsesses over) I used to be crazy about having a unique art style (which made me try many things, which was fun and good!) But the amount of time I invested into meshing together and getting that perfectly unique art style was uh..well wasn't that good. I don't know when but at one point I just stopped caring and with time, my art developed into what it is today. Of course I still do studies or think "wow, I love the way artist X draws X thing" and try to copy it, see how it's different from how I draw it and I might or might not incorporate into my own style. Tldr: there is nothing wrong with wanting to find your art style, but obsessing over it isn't the solution. Just study and draw and you'll eventually have a style that suits you.
I’m currently a junior in high school with plans to double major in college (art and computer science) and I have been experiencing some of the worst art block of my life. It’s more specifically my art style, I feel like my style just isn’t there anymore and it changes everytime I draw. Like one time I’ll draw something I really like and the next time I absolutely hate it. I just don’t know what to do to get back what I had as a middle schooler who just drew whatever she felt like drawing. I’m doing better but it’s still a struggle
i definitely relate to what you've described. It's a lot harder than me just saying, but trying to relieve that pressure and reduce the expectations on yourself will help make things fun and carefree again. It's difficult to let go of that, but once you do, you will start to feel like that middle school you again!
I have a question about this that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately… Are artists aware about their style? Like, if you’re an artist with a specific style, do you make art and think like oh this needs to be altered a little more to fit my style better? And are you aware of what kind of aspects make your style YOUR style? Because I’m an artist too but I don’t even know if I draw in a specific style…
As an artist: I don't alter it like that, whatever I draw just IS my style. If I look through my artwork I can definitely see that I have a distinct style. Don't worry too hard about it! An artstyle is something that will just naturally emerge as you draw. You definitely have one even if you don't think so.
It depends. I’m starting to develop a style, I feel like my art is becoming more recognizable as mine. For example, I tend to draw thick lines for line art and I like that look. I will never be the artist who draws super thin line art, it’s not natural to me. Some things are intentional on my part. I experiment a lot with different line art styles, colouring styles and such. I think actively trying out different methods can give you some direction as to how you like to do art. I’ve been really loving the bold comic book line art lately so I’m riding that wave. All these little experiments will naturally influence your art style. For styling anatomy though, I’ve had to be a lot more intentional with that and haven’t quite figured it out yet.
5:05 can I ask what you mean by 'slots'? Is there a limit as to how many people can join the discord? That's a pretty neat idea if that's the case, I feel like discords often fill up with people and it can get overwhelming
Love the drawings in the back but if I have to be honest… as an artist this situation (under most circumstances) are more dramatised, it’s not that deep IMO, no hate just my opinion!
I agree! It’s more to make beginner artists feel seen, since so many beginner artists struggle with it. finding your style is not the ultimate goal of art, and that’s why I think it’s so important to realize WHY you started making art and how simple it was starting out. social media and expectations around us have warped our perceptions of creating. that's awesome! I am so happy that your art is matching who you are
That is good
