You know what’s funny? References are KEY to getting good “fast”. I was very stubborn - still am - and very rarely used refs for my work. And, to my surprise, my art work comes out looking better when I have refs to go by. Old and newer artists, please don’t be like me. 😂 Happy drawing! ✍️
Since I had so much restriction on electronics as a kid, I couldn’t be on phones at all close to bedtime and that’s when I’d be inspired to draw. So, I spent most of my life drawing from imagination only. Trying to get used to drawing with references is getting better but I’m not entirely used to it yet
Referencing both finished art and the process of better artists are two very important things to learn to do regularly. Sometimes I would be stuck fighting myself over something that doesnt turn out right at all, then I watch literally 10 minutes of a better artist drawing that very thing and suddendly I can do it now. Seeing someone do it with confidende makes it easier to analyze and figure out the reasoning behind, as well as just having a good example of it being done right to copy
im pretty sure surprise like that is an actual method used by some nurses in psych wards? like, saying something so shocking and surprising that it completely distracts a person from their distress 😭
Talent is never the thing that makes the artist. Talent is like an early boost. It gives you a headstart over others, but it doesn't take you far. It's the effort you put in and the sacrifices you make for your art.
I’ve came to this realization too when I realize that references are better serve as inputs of information and knowledge rather than a direct copy so that you can draw them imagination applying it to the output. The input also helps expand your visual Library so that when you encounter similar problems you can just apply that previous input that is now ingrained. Also helps when observing new things from references
THIS, art is really difficult cause in some ways you can interpret using references as either something to break down and copy but a lot of times we aren't given the fine print that it should not be a copy. I struggled for years trying to draw whatever I liked cause I was not understanding the reference and how it reinforces how a certain aspect of the subject works, and instead looked at it as a means of copying an exact angle for example.
My perspective about references changed so much after AI hit. I'm not focusing too much on perfection or detailed things. it's more about identity Many great artists changed their styles over the years into simpler ones. we learn all the fundamentals so we can bend it later
True, as a digital artist, I cannot deny how significant using references had help me. To me when I was younger, using references felt like “copying” similar to tracing… but its not that at all! Using a reference. Your questions like “on dear, how does the arm look again” or “how should I shade this part” could potentially be answered by looking at how others do it. Yes at the end of the day you still are kind of copying other ppls work, but I’m the whole process, you cna learn a lot from it
- do now and figure it now later - Do what ur uncomfortable with and trust you will figure it out - Stop overthinking it - Figure it now and do it later - By doing you can learn something new - Keep doing it and eventually, you will plateu and repeat mistakes - Targeted practice - Figure it out -> Theory learning - Do it-> Put theory into practice - Then problem solve to improve - Balance output and input - If you are not improving, do the opposite, either output or input - Challenge yourself - Overcome - Improves confidence
As someone who has done art for years, I sometimes put off art for a year, two years or more DUE TO fear of what I can or cannot do. I’ve had issues with self-doubt and confidence in myself for who knows how long, causing a constant loop of starting and not completing pieces that I’m “satisfied” with as they are. The moment Aaron mentioned something about self-doubt, fear and positive reinforcement, that was the moment my eyes opened up. I’m glad I stumbled upon your video at 1am in the morning, tired or not. Thank you for your wise words good sir, and may you always continue to make amazing art :D
Also, no shame in following a tutorial 1:1 or trace to learn if you truly struggle. I wasted to much time trying to figure (semi)realistic rendering when i started digital. Then, found a tutorial that said, "here, pick a portrait, trace the face (U aren't learning anatomy today), colourpick the color from the reference (U aren't learning colour pallets or lighting) and step by step, DO THIS. Immediately improved. If I ever find the tutorial again, I'll link it
asking for insight and critiques from other artist peers has helped me alot, I realized the very best artists I personally know still ask for critiques from others, I felt really inspired by that
hello!! i was wondering, do you ask for critiques from people who draw similarly to "your style" who you think of as better, or just asking any artist friends? I draw a lot differently from my friends so I do not know if they would be able to see the issues 😔 ?
@@mankinzMaybe looking up discord servers or other chatting platforms of your favorite artists/artists whose style is similar to yours can help? There are a lot of artists on TH-cam who create discord servers and such to encourage people to give advice to each other and sometimes even take your art and give advice on how to improve it in a video themselves. Angel Ganev recently does really helpful “fix your art” vids, so maybe start from there.
@@mankinzAsking for criticism can help regardless of this! Especially if their style is different. They might see something you wouldn't, and vice versa! But remember: not all criticism is stuff you have to apply. Some criticism can be just that. 🤷🏼
Yk what, thanks alot for this. My mums an artist and all I hear is practise practise practise and not actually breaking it down and looking into what you really need to do. This video has genuinely peaked my intrest so I've subscribed cause I genuinely wanna see what else you can teach me. Again thanks alot and I hope you the best
I genuinely thought i was going to hear the usual old tired points that everyone makes like "You need to draw every day" ( dude i have a job😢), or only tips for beginners (i have been doing art for 20 years). But i was pleasantly surprised to find good pointers that can be used by both rookies and struggling pros! Great video thank you so much
You dont understand how much I needed to hear all of this in this moment of my life, I have lost so much confidence and will to draw these past months, and honestly I can not wait to catch your streams and watch you thank you so much for these videos they are incredibly helpful and that little push we did not know we needed.
I feel that. I have peers around me who excel at drawing realistic proportions when ive been doing cartoony chibis for the past 10 years and just now throwing myself into it. Ugh
Another reason why "just do it" is good advice: books and tutorials etc. are there to answer questions. But I learned from experience that until you have been around the block a few times with drawing, you do not know which questions to ask, so the tutorials don't help at all. I confess that as much as I am awed by Proko, I found his TH-cam channel of very little use to me, because it was like putting a primary school kid in an advanced calculus class. Now once I have done a bit more of "just drawing", I'll have specific questions that Proko will be able to answer - so then I'll get back to him. Let me do the arithmetic first before I go attempt the calculus. 🙂
i really took this video to heart and immediately tried drawing something "new" to me after watching it; i proceeded to draw the best hand i've ever done so far in my life, and i struggle supremely with hands! especially ones doing things "in action." so thanks a ton!!
I quit my job, had enough saved to last me a year off from working. This marks the first time in my life that I had time to myself. It's insane how fast I have progressed with having all this time and no stress. I still think the real reason why Pewdiepie has progressed so fast in his art journey, is because he could afford all that time to himself with no stress.
I have a friend who's really good at art and everything you say here he told me a few months ago, I'm so glad this type of knowledge and pathways to improving are being exposed to newer artists. Thank you dawg.
This was crazy helpful, I love the way you described the cycle of positive reinforcement. The idea of focus studies and creating pieces to become a cycle of practice, learning, and visualization was really awesome to see.

This video has gave me a bunch of motivation Thank you so much! I was struggling with forcing myself to draw something lately because I only learn(taking curses, watching guide videos etc.) but in conclusion I found myself completely burned out. Your video really helped me to find a way further! Thank you again!
Watching this vid, it definitely confirmed that working just on the fundamentals was not the way to go, and I may have taken it too literally that they were "important". They definitely are but what I found out is that most artists in general just work on art instead of tackling the fundamentals. Either way I believe is fine but I think by having an imbalance to the input and output like you mentioned, I was glad that you could point it out. This vid's a gem.
tysm for the video, I've been hitting a real slump after my first year of art college and this video just covered everything I wanted to know and that other people feel exactly the same as I did. Art is scary when you seem to not live up to how you thought you could do, and the industry itself is hard to see yourself in in god knows how much time. But this vid is helping me realize how to get on track and focus since the summer started.
I think at a certain skill level self teaching art plattoes unless you actively seek out feedback from more advanced artists. Especially when you are sorta good and want to improve but feel overwhelmed with the topics like anatomy, visual storytelling, simplifying, composition, lighting etc. Another artist can give you direction on what to focus on. I learned that this is the main difference between self taught artists and those with a degree in the arts. I myself am currently looking for finding artists that offer critiquing. In a nutshell its applying the method of Design Thinking. Identify a goal or problem you wan to tackle, brainstorm/draw something half backed (not 100% perfect) and ask your target audience/advanced artist for feedback and going back to the drawing board and incorporating the feedback just as quickly for another round of feedback.
This is THE video on how to improve in art - or literally any skill. You've mentioned everything important, even some things that are usually overlooked in this type of videos, and I'm so thankful that I came across your channel. Totally inspiring!
I've been stuck for a long time because there's too much to learn and I find it overwhelming, but this video helped me understand what I need to do first. Thank you so much 😭

Also, the bloopers were a nice reminder of what being human means to me, so thank you and I hope you have a great day :D
Fantastic video, full of great advices. I have been lacking targeted practice and just doodling around. Thank you so much. Now I can see a clear path on improving. ✨
BRO THANK YOU SO MUCH I REALLY NEEDED THIS :D I was so unsure of myself on whether I was even good enough to create art after failure after failure in improvement. Thank you (:
This video might've just fixed my art block. It seems so simple but i've never thought of my art or process this way. I was so used to pumping out tons of drawings of my current hyperfixation and after 2 years of taking medication it feels like I've been stifiled. But now I see that I actually have the freedom to focus and improve on the things I've always wanted to but could never focus on. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us ♡
I think your advice is the best I could ever get . I’m not new to art because I’ve been studying it for quite a while but whenever I stagnate . It’s either because I don’t study and get burned out because I don’t improve or because I study too much and I get burned out from studying too much.
I love this video, its very well made. I've unconsciously been checking out the list. Im at the point where im figuring out my weaknesses and dealing with them. Right now im carrying out stylised portrait studies focusing on the fortiche art style and i would love to begin full illustrations soon. I'll admit i have never really done art studies on a grand scale like drawing hands for a week cos of time as a uni student studying physics. Thank you for making this video, please make more like this.
Wise advice. Thanks for making this! The self talk is huge for me. Staying positive and making sure I keep the idea that I WILL eventually get better if I keep going. Even if the progress doesn't seem to happen for months, I stay positive.
This video comes at the right time when I had the worst slump ever.. been months now I'm feeling stuck and I have to try this suggestions you have put in the video. Thank you so much for making this content
You did try to be as easy to understand in your video as you could, and I think the video gives great advice overall. But I think going even further and giving actual examples of what you mean by certain things (like when you do "art study" literally give an example of what you mean - like draw a hundred hands idk?). You are one of my favourite art youtubers, very sigma
This was such a good video tysm for making! I really feel like my mindset has been refreshed, I've been putting of actively practicing and improving for a little while now and this is exactly what i needed. Everything you talked about really feels relatable and achievable! It also helps that your editing and filming style is very entertaining lol
Very good timing on that video, I needed it. Awesome content as always man, you're getting good with editing ! It made me laugh a lot. The video was really pleasant to watch honestly. Keep going ! I'm sure you'll succeed in the youtube game. I'll try to come by on your streams !
Ok why do you only have 12k followers??? You deserve atleast 200k!! Your videos are hilarious,so well edited and actually educational at the same time🤩🤩
Let me just say you're absolutely hilarious. I loved the bg music and the intro. All the random memes are hilarious as well. I'm literally laughing every two seconds 🤣🤣
When I started out, I started out with Gacha Club/Life :D I did digital art first but I had somehow realized I don't draw good digitally but I draw good traditionally. I also learnt that I traditionally I can't color and i can color digitally due to the unlimited supply of color. References also helps when you do art. Bases, references and ideas help a lot to maximize your imagination and creativity! I'm still a beginner but I love my drawing even though i see the flaws. Thats why I'm still drawing :D
This video was very helpful! Thank you for making this video! Hoping to see more videos like this one in the future from you. Looking forward to it! Have a great day!
I started drawing when I was 14 but started really taking it seriously when I was 16, and I’ve improved a lot this year esp but this month has been really good for me ! I’ve had tons of motivation and inspiration, and I'm finally figuring out what I'm struggling w (composition and basic anatomy) I’ve always ignored trying in art to keep drawing the same portraits bc I'm decent at them but I’ve been drawing more angles and literally drew my first full body "illustration " w different references and it's so nice? Idk if it's bc I'm growing or bc I’ve gotten older but I'm not as scared of it being ugly it's very nice
"If you are a beginner, then just do it and figure it out later. If you are plateauing in your progress, then figure it out and then do it." -Aron Min 2024.
They are all tips but remember u also need to figure it out on your own like make some techniques to make it easy 😊. also another tip socialize with some artist conversation still have very big impact for verification.
Don’t think, just draw everything you love and every artist and style you love! Got it! Also make as many mistakes as possible to learn. Got it! Can someone keep on eye on me so I actually get it finished? I never ever finish anything I start! I get so unmotivated and think it’s so garbage that I abandon and move to the next possible project!
Cool video, I would have also added trying to recreate an artist drawing that you like, an then compare your drawing above the other, see the errors, and with this feed back try to figured out what are your main problems to achieve certain result you want
Wow it’s so simple, output and input. Ying Yang, Surfer Wave, Mining Crafting, Pura Vida, Water Pee, Food Poo, it’s all a cycle man, life is just a circle. ⭕️👈 Love for all 💕😩

Also, the bloopers were a nice reminder of what being human means to me, so thank you and I hope you have a great day :D
I don't usually leave comments on TH-cam but holy moly this whole video was an experience, great stuff, keep up the amazing work :)👍
Balancing input vs. output is absolutely goated advice. thanks Aaron.
one of the better: how to improve videos ive seen.
seeing the limits of what you're capable of is a really great advice
I feel like every single artist has to watch this now, this is such a steal
Fantastic video, full of great advices. I have been lacking targeted practice and just doodling around. Thank you so much. Now I can see a clear path on improving. ✨
BRO THANK YOU SO MUCH I REALLY NEEDED THIS :D
I was so unsure of myself on whether I was even good enough to create art after failure after failure in improvement.
It’s either because I don’t study and get burned out because I don’t improve or because I study too much and I get burned out from studying too much.
i like the humor and the fish eye camera bits, nice video bro
pullin up at the crib with the world 1-1 music 🔥‼️
Loved that game as a kid and still have the whole ost in my head kid me also took like 4 months to beat it.
Heck yeah!! Honestly though, the music helped my nostalgia-riddled brain take this all in. It's great
editing king shit, great video aaron ur killin it dawg
I love this video, its very well made. I've unconsciously been checking out the list. Im at the point where im figuring out my weaknesses and dealing with them. Right now im carrying out stylised portrait studies focusing on the fortiche art style and i would love to begin full illustrations soon.
I'll admit i have never really done art studies on a grand scale like drawing hands for a week cos of time as a uni student studying physics.
Thank you for making this video, please make more like this.
Your editing style and how you talk about your process is such a nice change
I appreciate your realism and sincerity, it’s very easy to relate with you. You’re gonna go far.
Wise advice. Thanks for making this!
The self talk is huge for me. Staying positive and making sure I keep the idea that I WILL eventually get better if I keep going. Even if the progress doesn't seem to happen for months, I stay positive.
This is the most helpful art advice I’ve probably ever heard and EXACTLY what I was looking for
This video gave me a wholeee new view on how to go about drawing and mindsets! You’re amazing man keep up the great videos
This is the first video of you I watched and I must say you got me. I'll follow you everywhere from now on
This video comes at the right time when I had the worst slump ever.. been months now I'm feeling stuck and I have to try this suggestions you have put in the video. Thank you so much for making this content
I really love the bloopers! Hope you keep them in in the future :3
Thanks for the continued support man I really appreciate it 🙏🙏
This is the first video that actually motivated me that i immediately grabbed my sketchbook again
thanks I will rewatch every day, every hours, when i get stuck on art
Ok why do you only have 12k followers??? You deserve atleast 200k!! Your videos are hilarious,so well edited and actually educational at the same time🤩🤩
AHH, this was rlly helpful imo, I struggled and still struggle with a lot of points or stories brought up in this video. Tysm
Great, well made art video lol, honestly THIS is the quality of art content I aspire to create
Your art is so beautiful and this has definetely helped me realize some things about my own art, thank you so much for sharing!
Let me just say you're absolutely hilarious. I loved the bg music and the intro. All the random memes are hilarious as well. I'm literally laughing every two seconds 🤣🤣
Love your video style and pacing, thank you for making it!
Dis video is great!,Love it (also you made my fear of going to school disappear, ive been absent for a week now,I think this is my biggest mistake)
Thank you this video really helped me realise a lot of things that I’m doing wrong.
I’m old as heck and you’ve really helped me. Thank you.
Genuinely the best art advice I’ve come across, I wish I had this video a long time ago ahah
This is really good advice that answers many important questions, thank you ❤
It’s like the TH-cam algorithm knows when I’m procrastinating art holy. Great advise tho
The mad lads that can go straight into contour drawing and getting it right! :O
Great humor, tipps and editing
Loved every second❤
genuinely fantastic video good job man
Great video! Loved both the educational content and the editing 🙏
Proko whipping that skeletons was hysterical
Can't help but feel the nostalgia hearing the mario background sounds
"If you are a beginner, then just do it and figure it out later.
If you are plateauing in your progress, then figure it out and then do it."
-Aron Min 2024.
I loved the video, the edit was so entertaining😂
They are all tips but remember u also need to figure it out on your own like make some techniques to make it easy 😊. also another tip socialize with some artist conversation still have very big impact for verification.
10 seconds in and I'm already subscribed
You're literally The Best art TH-camr
Omg this was so eye opening like actually a must watch for artists😞🙏
Awesome video!! I resonate so hard with the bloopers. Filming yourself is not easy at allll thank god for editing software 😅
This is a super cool and helpful vid :0 I think I needed this
damn love your editing! That was one blast of a cool inspirational video.
Didn’t anticipate this to be therapeutic
Really great video - thanks! Really insightful!
Don’t think, just draw everything you love and every artist and style you love! Got it!
Also make as many mistakes as possible to learn. Got it!
Can someone keep on eye on me so I actually get it finished?
I never ever finish anything I start! I get so unmotivated and think it’s so garbage that I abandon and move to the next possible project!
super inspirational bro im going to apply this ASAP!!!
⭕️👈 Love for all 💕😩
Solid video man! Nice editing, you did good! :D
