    Had the opportunity to perform (with a different choir) Handel's "Messiah" at the Tabernacle. It's an experience like nothing else - standing there with my back against the base of the F-pipe, glad I was in the back because of the tears running down my face, the biggest smile I could sing through, body shaking from the organ and my whole soul coming out of my mouth. It's not just unforgettable, it's life-changing.

    Difficult to say everything that I want to and short comment, but I’ll try. If you understand what was going on in the United States at this time, you will never listen to this song in the same way again. At the beginning of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln said that he wouldn’t touch slavery. He only wanted to maintain the union. He went through a personal conversion, and then he took the nation through a national conversion. He once stated that “God wills this contest and he wills that it not end yet.” he called for days of fasting and prayer and national repentance. In his second inaugural address, he specifically talked about the sin of slavery. When have you ever known a national leader in a time of war stand up and say in effect “we may not be the good guys.” Both the north and the south had to reform and Lincoln knew it. By the end of the war the union knew what it was fighting for and this song represents that so beautifully. Let us live to make men free. I love this song.

      Charlie, @blakeear's comment is spit on. This hymn is part military march, but a march for and behalf of Christ. The faint brass at the beginning reflects the distance in time and space from these Civil War battles leading the many voices to proclaim 'truth is marching on.'

    Yes, Charlie. All the singers in the 350 person choir and the players in the orchestra are volunteers. They all go through tryouts where they are tested vocally, and academically in music theory and practice, and they practice every Thursday night for a few hours, then perform Sunday mornings. They are expected to learn and know over 350 songs, practice them in advance, and come to their practices already knowing the songs so their practices are advanced. The organ's beginnings date back to the 1850s when the pipes were brought via the Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America, and then transported from San Pedro CA across the Mojave Desert and up to Salt Lake City by wagon train. The choir usually performed only with the organ, until the 1990s when the Church added the orchestra. (They did a number of vinyl albums with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in the 1950s-70s.) But, to appreciate the Choir, you really need to hear them in the Tabernacle, because it is the acoustics of the Tabernacle (where they perform weekly) that puts you inside the sound, engulfing you. Sit about the 5th-10th row back from front, center, and see what happens. I'll never forget the first time I heard them on about June 12th, 1972. Something I will never forget. Maybe it won't be the same for you, but for me it was awe inspiring.

      I was in attendance on Sunday morning for Music and the Spoken word when they did Come thou Fount of Every Blessing. I was in the front row directly in front of the first chair Violinist. My little brother sings with the choir, and it's been fun to see how hard they work. They are expected to know each piece really well before they ever sing it together, so their rehearsals aren't focused on learning the music, but tuning into each other and polishing the piece. Since the choir started performing regularly with the orchestra, it's taken their music to a fantastic new level and I love listening to it.

    We sing this very same arrangement in our church choir, and hold practices in my home. We are not the Tabernacle Choir, with about 10 men and maybe 15 women. But the magic is there when we sing. I feel blessed to have a main room and a piano that fits us, and the home never sounds better than when we sing! If I'm not mistaken this is the Mack Wilberg arrangement. Glad you enjoy it also!

    I had the opportunity in high school to learn this arrangement of the song and have loved it ever since. The was in the 60’s in, of all places, Southern California. After we performed it in our school auditorium, we all went to a local pizza place that had a piano in the hall and sang it again. In the crowd at the pizza joint were members of the military with tears in their eyes-to a man. At the piano was our lead tenor. He was a gifted pianist and tenor. Years later I saw him singing at the Met. Every time I hear this song I remember that experience. I now live in Utah and am a proud member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Keep up your great work sharing the beautiful songs of “my” choir.

    If you would like to know about the origins of this song, please research. The lyrics to the "march" were rewritten by the poet Julia Ward Howe by suggestion of a pastor she was standing next to while a Union Army (U.S. North soldiers) marched and sang rather foul lyrics regarding John Brown's body (fierce anti-slaver). She took the challenge, was awakened during the night by the words forming rapidly in her mind, and scrawled the new lyrics to this tune. It was the North's battle cry as they fought against their brothers in the South to free the slaves and to keep the Union together. *See United States Civil War (1861-64).

    • @TheBudhenson
      @TheBudhenson 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Also of interest ... the ORIGINAL 4th verse was, 'As He [Christ] died to make men holy, let us die to make men free ...'
      In the modern version it's, '... let us live to make men free.'
      During the US Civil War men of the north who were enlisting knew very well that 'war is hell' and that they may well die to eliminate slavery.
      There was a blood price to pay to end slavery in the United States and many good men paid that price.
      The same is true for any of our troops who become engaged in actions to preserve or protect freedom anywhere in the world.
