This beautiful hymn was written by Horatio Spafford after the death of his four daughters in a ship sinking accident. It amazes me that after losing his children he was able to compose this song which truly portrays his faith in God's goodness even in the midst of trial and tragedy.

Meeting all of you today was honestly one of the best moments of my whole life. I felt so privelidged to be given the opportunity. I'm the biggest fan ❤️
I don’t believe in coincidences. I believe that you have been introduced to this choir at the exact time in your life you needed to be and this trip to General Conference that has been made possible by such a generous soul will be the right place for you and at the right time in your life. The church has redone their hymnal for the first time since the 1980’s and this hymn is one of the ones that has been added to the hymnal. I love it more and more every time I hear it.
I don't believe in coincidences, Pmedic. I believe that God had you comment this, so I could come around and tell you that your religious leaders married little kids and impregnated other married-mens wives after sending them on missions.
Enjoy the mountains and the culture and the warm people, they’re real. Expect to have a few testimonies thrown in your direction, but know that they come from people who want you to have what makes them happy, and want to share. And by all means, feel the power of the choir wash over you. It’s an awesome, immersive and joyful comforting sound and sensory experience. I’m glad you can go.
As a member of the Tabernacle Choir, I have to say that you have reviewed some of my most favorite songs to rehearse and perform. I have one recommendation for you. Our associate conductor, Ryan Murphy, has an exquisite song he was commissioned to do. It’s called “Lullaby”. I’d love to see what you think of that song. You are right when you said that Mack is a genius - he truly is!
Hi Kathie!! I’m so happy you are seeing this channel. The world feels so small! I’m on TH-cam, watching reaction videos from someone who lives in Britain, and find a comment from my childhood neighbor. What a world we live in! You are part of something truly beautiful! Love you and pray you are well!
I have been watching "Music and the Spoken Word" for several years. I LOVE IT! I got a great introduction to the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square. I watch/listen to your music daily. I have a huge personal playlist of it that I play every morning while I get ready for my day. I was amazed to find that "Music and the Spoken Word" has been broadcast for 95 years. Amazing! I love it when the cameras pans the choir, orchestra, and organ. It's uplifting to see so many happy faces so appear to be enjoying themselves. I was a music major in college and have sung in several local audition-only choral groups over the years. I'm too old now to be a member of the Tabernacle Choir at this point in my life. Keep up the good work.
As a lifelong member of the church I have been a blessed recipient of the talents and gifts of our magnificent choir and orchestra. So much so that it is easy to take it for granted. But, to see the choir through the Charlie’s eyes gives me a new and deeper appreciation. What a gift!
I literally cry every time I see your reaction to this choir and orchestra. So glad you have the opportunity to witness this beautiful music, which in my mind is written and performed perfectly with the majestic hand of God.
You should totally do The Spirit Of God Like A Fire Is Burning. It opens with a soloist and you get to hear the individual voice of a singer in the choir, gradually more voices and instruments are added until a final triumphant ending.(It is also one of my favorite hymns)
Our family contributed to your trip! We hope you love your time in Salt Lake City and seeing the choir in person. There is nothing that compares to the feeling!
If you're in Utah on Thursday and aren't too tired. The choir practices on those days (usually). It is free and open to everyone. It's cool to watch what goes in to perfecting their sound.
Thank you for playing this song! My husband died three years ago. I had 3 children still at home, the youngest was 11 years old. This song was sung at his funeral. Your timing couldn't have been better as I was having a challenging morning today. Such a beautiful song and so peaceful! Thank you!
You’re such a celebrity here already! All my friends have been talking about you and posting your videos! Can’t wait to have you in SLC! Praying for you and your family!
@TheCharlieSmithChannel If you don't already know, I will let you in on a little secret.... all the concerts that the Tabernacle Choir puts on are free to attend. At least all the ones in Utah. All you have to do is reserve your tickets. Welcome to Utah. Drive the Alpine loop and see the fall colors between sessions. You will love it. Good luck with your family. You will be in more prayers than you know about. In fact you will have millions praying for you.
@@TheCharlieSmithChannel There are few things that will make you feel torn in extreme directions as being in the same space as the Latter-day Saints. The haters are nearly as committed as the Saints. Nearly. 😊 Agree with your response earlier Charlie: live and let live. Enjoy the conference and our world-class music! So fun to watch you get introduced to the tabernacle choir! Be sure to find the choir’s historically important moments on TH-cam and react there too; your journey has been too fun!
Thank you, thank you!! I came here specifically to suggest that video! It gives you a whole new understanding and appreciation for this beautiful hymn....
When Brigham Young first commissioned the establishment of the choir, he knew of the Welsh singing prowess and most of the early choir members were from Wales.
Oh we sang that last week on music and the spoken and word and I definitely cried during the practice run and broadcast. Such a wonderful song! It was my first time singing it with the choir.
Wow, Charlie, I think you will really enjoy SLC. I think you will enjoy the conference. God bless you, sir. I will pray for you in your struggles with your family. Have faith.
Charlie, you have a wonderful heart and wholesome soul. I love to watch you react to the choir. How marvelous your videos are. Please keep it up!!! You are fabulous! I live in Salt Lake and have all my life and have rather taken the choir for granted. Thanks for reminding me of the beauty and spirit that is right here in my neighborhood!
Utah welcomes you Charlie. I have attended Conference and listened to the choir a few times, mostly I have watched it on TV is so beautiful and perfect. Bring a box of tissues, YOU WILL NEED IT!!!
The story behind the lyrics of this song is mind blowing too. Horatio Spafford wrote it after the great Chicago fire burned his business, then his daughters died when their ship sank, and he lost an infant son to disease.
Thanks. That background matters. I will listen with different ears now. I lost my best friend, mom, dog, aunt, and nephew all in 2 years. Today is the 1 year anniversary of my dog. I miss him the most second to my mom. It is still well with my soul...😔
He suffered even more than that and never lost his faith. Hugh Bonneville was in tears narrating it, and so was I listening to it. th-cam.com/video/ReApJymYSiw/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared

Hey... I have a message from one of my seminary students that just watched your video. We are so excited for you to go and experience conference. Here is Zoey with her message... "I am a choir student at my school, and seeing you react to the chords the same way I do brings me happy tingles. Enjoy conference and the fellings of peace that the choir brings!"
I’m wreckd too! Those chills down our spine and tears in our eyes are not the choir, but the Holy Spirit of God that this choir is able to invite to open hearts.
I’m so happy you can come hear us in person! I don’t know if anyone else has pointed it out but we no longer use folders now and it resulted in more quality sound!!!🎶❤️🎶
How can you remember the parts? Mostly the words ... I can't remember the words, have been a member of the church for 26 years but I can sing alto with my eyes closed 🤣
Wait he’s coming to conference!?! Nice!! The music in person is on a whole another level. One of the most powerful in person experiences I’ve ever had. Truly amazing and soul shaking experience
Charlie , thank you so much for your kind words about the church and the choir. It's refreshing to see someone not of our faith be so kind. So thank you. I really hope you got to see the choir in the tabernacle and hear the organ in person. I grew up in the salt lake valley and had many opportunities to see the choir perform. Hearing them in the conference center is amazing, but the tabernacle is where to see and hear them. There is nothing else like it .
I don’t think I ever even thought of it that way! Great observation and comment. The spirit of truth shines brightly through the music sung by those who believe the words they are singing! I LOVE IT!
Dear brother, the reason it hits you this hard is not just because they are a technically brilliant choir. It is because everything they are singing about is true! The spirit is testifying straight to your heart through their music.
I couldn’t agree more!! That performance was impeccable and will always stand out in my mind as the epitome of Sissel and the Tabernacle Choir joining forces. To be there in person was an experience that is hard to put into words. For those saying he already did it, in the comment section of the Battle Hymn video he specifically says he has not done it yet. He actually replied twice saying he hadn’t done it yet. As of today, he hasn’t.
Charlie! I am so excited for you to attend Music and the Spoken Word and conference in person. I am one of the team of hair and makeup artists that work the broadcasts. The whole experience will be so awesome for you. I hope you love it and I can't wait to see your reaction to seeing it in person.
Be prepared for an overwhelming and amazing experience - one that you’ll never forget. Wait til you feel and hear the organ . What a wonderful gift you’ve received. God bless!
I’ve grown up since childhood (I’m in my 60s) listening to the tabernacle choir and I am so happy that your choice in music is so wonderful. Thank you. Have a wonderful time.
This song is so wonderful. My high school choir took it with us on tour in Southern California. We sang it at Catholic and LDS services and everyone, including us, was in tears. What a powerful message.
When my husband passed away last year he asked our four kids and their spouses to sing this song at his funeral. It was his favorite hymn. It was so touching.
I’m excited for you, Charlie. I hope this is a great experience for you to be in the room and feel the power of the choir in your body. My heart goes out to you being in a custody battle that’s wearing you thin. I truly hope you find a bit of peace to keep you going 💪
Welcome to Utah, Charlie! I will be anxiously awaiting to hear about your experience this weekend. I hope it lifts you, and that you return home feeling blessed and filled.
I've experienced that emotional, tingling, shaking sensation like you did, probably thousands of times in my life as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS. From the music, reading the scriptures, and the weekly sermons at church. It's more than an overwhelming reaction to beautiful music. It's a DIRECT message from God. He sends that as a message of confirmation of beautiful things, and truth in their messages. Not everyone is open to receive these "communications" from God. Bless you, and anyone else listening as well. And, try to "listen" to the message, follow through with your thoughts & feelings from them, and they will change your life for the better, even if it's already great.
I just found you an hour ago and have been watching all of your reactions to The Tablernacle Choir. I had the opportunity to sing two conferences ago with the young single adult choir and being there to sing in front of the organ is something I will never forget. Thank you for helping me remember how amazing it is for me to have grown up listening to them and feel the spirit through your reactions. So excited for you to be here in Utah and see General Conference. It is something I hope you will never forget! Love from Utah!
This hymn is one of my favorites as well. This rendition was so beautiful. Horatio Spafford wrote the words as a poem after visiting the place where the ship that was transporting his family sank and his four daughters were lost. His wife managed to survive. Knowing this story gives those words so much more meaning. Enjoy your trip Charlie.
Thank you for your reaction videos of the Tabernacle Choir. You’ve helped me to hear their music and message with a refreshing newness of tender emotion..
I've been listening to the Tab choir since I was a little girl. I always thought they were angels singing ❤ Please do a reaction on Sissel and the Tabernacle choir "Slow down". Love to watch your reactions.
Dear Brother, you are feeling an outpouring of the Lord's spirit when they sing. I joined the church in 1978 at the age of 25 and this beautiful feeling radiates in every church meeting as the Holy Spirit testifies of truth. I know you will have an incredible experience when you hear them in person. God Bless you and thank you for showcasing the Tabernacle Choir, as members of the church we all feel that angels are accompanying the singers as they perform which I truly have no doubt that they are. ❤
I've always thought it was amazing, that everyone is a volunteer. They aren't paid, they do this to help others feel the spirit. I love the Spirit of God, and Come Come Ye Saint's. Mainly because I have ancestors who migrated from Missouri so many years ago. These two songs make me think of their struggles.
Thank you so much for posting these reaction videos! I have been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints my entire life. I hear them at least twice a year for the last 35+ years and for that reason might I have taken the beauty, brilliance, and magnificence of this choir for granted. Watching you see them for the first time and see your soul shake has ignited something in me. Not everyone understands and experiences the language of music that touches every fiber of your being the way you do. I hope you have a wonderful experience at Conference this weekend!
Charlie, welcome to Utah this weekend! Our beautiful state welcomes you! Being in the Conference Center with the acoustics that are in there will bring the choir to another level for you. Enjoy your time. ♥ It's a rare occurrence to see one of the choir members become emotional. When you do, you can't help but know that the song/hymn has some deep meaning in that person's life. Thank you for your reviews of this wonderful choir and orchestra.
Please do a reaction to the Tabernacle Choir singing “Homeward Bound.” Their rendition of that song it’s just phenomenal. It really makes you feel like Heavenly Father is truly giving you a hug.
You really need to listen to Sissel singing "Slow Down" with the Tabernacle choir and Orchestra at Temple Square. A beautiful and touching performance.
Wonderful, Our daughter who has been a missionary for our church, also got to be at Conference. She said it was unforgettable. She speaks of her experience often. Enjoy and feel the SPIRIT. LIKE YOU JUST DID
My sister is in the choir and this will be her last Conference singing in the choir. It is a very bittersweet moment for her since she too is going through a tough time. Performing in the choir has been an emotional reprieve for her and it is sad she won't have this form of spiritual support going forward. Luckily she still has Christ, me, and our parents to help uplift her along her way to overcoming this temporal speed bump in her life. Being in the choir is considered a church calling, a service position and is a 5 year voluntary commitment. Mack Willberg, the choir director who arranged this, is a musical genius. I hope you enjoyed your visit and attendance at the conference session. It truly is a fully encompassing spiritual, emotional and uplifting experience regardless of anyone's beliefs. Cheers from Utah!
The background with this hymn is amazing of the family Horatio Gates Spafford. The peace he can have after that loss to be able to write this message of his being. It is quite a marvelous combination of the choir and orchestra "breathing together" . We have listened to the choir in person a number of times, in fact it is one of my most watched on my little YT videos. Thank you C.S. (my grandfather was named Charles that came from Wales to USA as he converted to the Gospel) I just subscribed to you.
Growing up listening to the tabernacle choir I totally forgot what a blessing it is in my life that I have taken for granted. Thank you for reminding me what a blessing it is to hear such amazing this with my ears as often as I do💕

Absolutely agree!
I love that one!
This!
Also "How Firm a Foundation"
We are definitely doing that one this weekend!!
Almost all Thursday rehearsals are open to the public. Unfortunately, this Thursday's rehearsal will not be open.
Thank you for playing this song! My husband died three years ago. I had 3 children still at home, the youngest was 11 years old. This song was sung at his funeral. Your timing couldn't have been better as I was having a challenging morning today. Such a beautiful song and so peaceful! Thank you!
sniff....yes. My father passed away in July....this was sung at his funeral as well. I can sit with you in this moment.
You’re such a celebrity here already! All my friends have been talking about you and posting your videos! Can’t wait to have you in SLC! Praying for you and your family!
Ahh I'm flattered. I can't wait to be there ☺️❤️
@TheCharlieSmithChannel If you don't already know, I will let you in on a little secret.... all the concerts that the Tabernacle Choir puts on are free to attend.
Nearly. 😊
Agree with your response earlier Charlie: live and let live.
Enjoy the conference and our world-class music! So fun to watch you get introduced to the tabernacle choir! Be sure to find the choir’s historically important moments on TH-cam and react there too; your journey has been too fun!
You should see the backstory of this hymn which the choir presented at their Christmas concert with Hugh Bonneville.
Yes, that version of this hymn has me sobbing EVERY TIME.
Here's a link - Hugh does a wonderful job narrating the story alongside the choir. th-cam.com/video/ReApJymYSiw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lP1lhId1rx-J3i14
One of the best videos ever made is that Christmas special
The history behind this hymn will break your heart and then lift your Spirit. One of the greatest testimonies ever written.
Thank you, thank you!! I came here specifically to suggest that video! It gives you a whole new understanding and appreciation for this beautiful hymn....
When Brigham Young first commissioned the establishment of the choir, he knew of the Welsh singing prowess and most of the early choir members were from Wales.
Catherine Jenkins sang in the choir and asked those in the choir if any had Welsh connections. I think most of them
did.
Redeemer of Israel accompanied by an orchestra gives me goosebumps every time.
Oh we sang that last week on music and the spoken and word and I definitely cried during the practice run and broadcast. Such a wonderful song! It was my first time singing it with the choir.
Charlie, thanks for coming! It was great meeting you during our lunch break after the morning program!
The Choir sang of that story in a Christmas special a few years ago. I highly recommend to watch that video.
@@bradybalser1698 I was at that concert. Of course it was amazing
He suffered even more than that and never lost his faith. Hugh Bonneville was in tears narrating it, and so was I listening to it.

@@dawnhasbroken6304Oh, you poor, brave soul! My heart aches to hear that. I don't know what to say that might comfort you, but I will pray for you. If you don't believe in prayer, then let's just say I'm sending good vibes/feelings your way. For what it's worth, just know that some random dude on the internet cares about you and your struggles. ❤
Guess what? During the Sunday General Conference Sessions you will get to sing with the Choir!
Christ is with you I can feel the spirit while you react to the heavenly chords may he bless you always
I get what you're feeling. It's like your soul is being plugged straight into heaven.
Excellent way to put it Vannersp!
Thabk you so much for forwarding that to me Mike. Please thank Zoey for her lovely message. I'm honoured she watched the video ❤️❤️
HI BROTHER BAIRD!!! (This is Kimber btw 😀)
How beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
I’m wreckd too! Those chills down our spine and tears in our eyes are not the choir, but the Holy Spirit of God that this choir is able to invite to open hearts.
Both for sure, as these people are extremely talented!
They don’t sing with the orchestra at general conference, they sing with that magnificent organ ❤
Oh my gosh I'm so excited you are coming!!!!!! Would love to meet you!!!!!
Ditto
Wait he’s coming to conference!?! Nice!! The music in person is on a whole another level. One of the most powerful in person experiences I’ve ever had. Truly amazing and soul shaking experience
Same
This hymn touches me every time I hear it. Incredibly powerful!
The fact that each member of the choir has a testimony of the words and principles sung in their hymns makes a huge difference!
This
I don’t think I ever even thought of it that way!
Your light increases with each of these videos from the Tabernacle. It's noticeable. And lovely.
Even thou I’m not a part of the church, Utah is my home. I love this place and the people here. I’m Glad to see you’re coming this weekend
You might enjoy “Homeward Bound” sung by the Tabernacle Choir.
The choirs goal is to help people fell the Spirit of God and the love of our Savior. You felt it!!
My grandmother passed away two years ago. This was our shared favorite hymn and every time i hear this hymn I think of her.❤
Slow down. With Sissil and the Tabernacle Choir. You will love it. Best song I’ve ever heard. It will touch your heart. Please listen to it🌾
He already did a video on it
I couldn’t agree more!!
Totally agree - I hear a divine female voice come through when I hear Sissel sing that song.
I was just about to say this.
God bless!
There is nothing like a little 'sound bath healing'... thank you
I am so excited for you to also experience when the congregation also sings with the choir.
I love music like this, especially music that's people singing without the instruments. It is like a balm to sooth a weary soul
❤The strings in the orchestra will blow you away. It is as lovely as the singing.
I’ve grown up since childhood (I’m in my 60s) listening to the tabernacle choir and I am so happy that your choice in music is so wonderful. Thank you. Have a wonderful time.
“In a dark place we find ourselves, and a little more knowledge lights our way.” - Yoda
SPEECHLESS this performance elevate my soul to other level....thanks for sharing
You have to listen to The Lord’s Prayer with Andre Boccelli and The Tabernacle Choir. It is as if heaven and earth … touch.
I agree
This…..we need this on the channel
None better.
You need to hear the choir sing "As I have loved you". Beyond belief
Actually named Love One Another
Welcome to Utah, Charlie! I will be anxiously awaiting to hear about your experience this weekend. I hope it lifts you, and that you return home feeling blessed and filled.
Oh my gosh this is so exciting Charlie! Enjoy every minute!!!
Wait until you walk into the auditorium. Your heartfelt reactions so far will be heightened to another level. Enjoy the General Conference.
This community is fantastic.
Choral music is my kryptonite. I totally become an emotional mess. Nothing more beautiful.
Lol, I wish I could sing with them. But I would be a blubbering mess through every song.
Such a powerful spirit that was felt during that song.
Love from Utah!
emotionless lately stirred up my lost emotions by watching your reaction to this music. Thank you.
If you can, try to drive the Alpine Loop while you’re here in Utah! Is the most beautiful state in the U.S.! Though I am a little biased.
I'm so excited that you get to attend in person! Safe travels and may God meet your heart's need.
Charlie, you will want to expect that the orchestra does not perform at General Conference. But it will still be ..... amazing.
I love your tender heart and I'm thrilled you get to have this amazing experience. Praying for you! Enjoy every minute. ❤
I am so glad to hear you are going to the Conference. You will definitely feel the spirit of the Lord.
It's a rare occurrence to see one of the choir members become emotional.
You're going to have an absolute life changing experience mate! Safe travels!
I am so excited for you to be here! I hope you enjoy it! God is good. 🙏
You really need to listen to Sissel singing "Slow Down" with the Tabernacle choir and Orchestra at Temple Square. A beautiful and touching performance.
Charlie, you have got to watch, Sissel and the choir , in "Slow Down"!!!
Wonderful,
Our daughter who has been a missionary for our church, also got to be at Conference.
You are not alone. I get "goose bumps" every time that I listen to then. You should hear them sing the Halleluia Chorus.
This is my absolute favorite hymn. I’ve listened to so many versions of it and it always makes me tear up! Such a beautiful song!❤
Keep shining! You’re doing wonderfully!
There is nothing like this choir and orchestra. Truly. I am so excited for you to get to have the opportunity to experience this in person.
The Tabernacle Choir does not perform Saturday Afternoon and Evening Sessions, just fyi
Growing up listening to the tabernacle choir I totally forgot what a blessing it is in my life that I have taken for granted. Thank you for reminding me what a blessing it is to hear such amazing this with my ears as often as I do💕
