- Battle Hymn of the Republic sung by a uniting congregation of thousands at Saint Paul's Cathedral for the Memorial Services in London, England. Memorial Services are attended by the Royal Family on September 14th 2001 for the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. Prayer services are by the Reverend and Archbishop of Canterbury (1991-2002), George Carey. The UK did a lot for us on that terrible day.

As a citizen of an Anglosphere country ( Australia ) , in my view my country is much more loyal to the USA than the 4 nations mentioned here. But I understand your pointthat they are on our side. Some of the Royal family attended this service at St. Pau's but what most people don't know is why the Queen was not present. Her Majesty hosted a private service at Westminster Abbey for American military service men and women and their families currently serving in England. No media, no cameras. This showed TRUE heart.
Duty, Honor, Service, Country. The Queen was all of those to a fault.
I didn't know that. She was very sensitive to the need for privacy at moments of tragedy.After the school shooting at Dunblane, she went there with Princess Anne and met parents and teachers privately.

Twice in US history, we were reluctantly drawn into world wars thousands of miles from our shores. Pacifism runs through our bloodstream. But both times we were headed over to assist the free European nations and were victorious. More recently we decided to crush ISIS and other terrorist forces because they attacked us.
What we do whenever we are victorious is rebuild the countries of our enemies and leave. We helped rebuild Germany and the rest of Europe via the ‘Marshall Plan”, saved Japan and exited. Donald Trump is working to do exactly that from the Middle East.
Europe is about due for one of their world wars, correct?
Great Britain was the parent,and the thirteen colonies were our teenage child!
In the latter part of the 18th century,our child decided to find its own way in the world.
The parent looks with pride at some of the things that the child has achieved in its 246 years!

I lost my brother on that terrible day at the Pentagon. I was unaware of the at the time it happened, we were in such grief. But I just want to say how very much I appreciate this. We all have to stand together.... Especially the UK and the US.... Sisters always!

I grieve with you Ms. Godwin, I was in the Pentagon that day. Everybody in my office, we were on the ground floor, A & B rings, got out okay, but we did lose friends in other parts of the Pentagon.
As an American I am honored we have such an awesome best friend in Great Britain.
I visited NYC in 97 and had lunch in South Tower. Very sad reminder that freedom is fought for, not a right Greetings from UK.

The evening of the Queen's death, the Prom concert by the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Albert Hall was cancelled snd the Orchestra played the National Anthem then Elgar's Nimrod, which was favourite of hers and was played at Prince Philip's funeral. It was beautiful. At the end there was total silence.

As an American I remember seeing a British band play our National Anthem "Star Spangled Banner" that day and it moved me to tears. It's not every day that you see a British band play an American patriotic song. For a shell shocked country that meant a lot to us.
Right! I saw that and cried. We didn't forget them either when Manchester happened either!!
Pablo, the Star Spangle Banner was a poem written by Francis Scott Key, it didn’t turn into a song till much later but likely caried similar tunes to some British medleys. The song was about the British trying to thwart the American resolve during one of the last battles of 1812 at Fort McHenry in Maryland (that’s what we call it, the British don’t seem to recall they were also at war with the US while battling against Napoleon), right after Washington DC was burned by British troops. The British navy attacked the fort expecting the Americans to quit and lower the flag in defeat hoping to use the bay to reach Baltimore. In the morning, despite the onslaught of bombings in a rough fort that likely didn’t have the updated weaponry to defend itself, the flag was still flying above the fort demonstrating the pride the people had defending the flag and victory.
That’s why the American flags are cherished to certain patriots, the average flag represents a government of most countries. While the American flag is different because it represents the spirit of the country, not necessarily the government. The anthem is about honoring those willing to fight for the US despite the odds.
Also, Battle of the Hymn is a different song, it was written during the American civil war used to rally support for a united country. Star Spangle Banner was played at Buckingham Palace, requested by the Queen, and it was such an honor that she asked for it if one actually understands the song. Just as it is touching to see our close allies sing a song of supporting our nation in a time when we were questioning if we were that detestable to have those attack on us. There is a story with each of these songs, but it carry’s a different meaning the way how the Brits, and some of our other allies, reached to give whatever condolences they could convey in an emotional time period.

This is the anthem of Lincoln, our greatest President as he sought to abolish slavery. A great man. By the grace of God we live on. And what this man did and the people that died will never be forgotten, on both sides.

Hugh Franklin Yes, the U.S. is still the daughter nation of Britain and, as you say like all teenagers, thinks she knows everything and sometimes tries to get as far away from mom as possible. But her mother is a thousand years older and wiser. Thankfully, in times of real pain mom's arm's are always open when her little U.S. is really hurting, just like my wife, although the girls are now 25 and 29.
Of course little U.S. maybe wasn't so little in the 1940s and helped save mom and that funny talking cousin across the channel.
Of course little U.S. was so glad that mom didn't hold a grudge too long when we were in our terrible 2s those 230 some years ago and took us back in the family so quickly.

British churches often use the first few words of the first verse instead of the proper title when introducing a hymn. "Battle Hymn" is a well known and often sung hymn in Anglican churches.

I remember when in Camp Lejuen, NC. we started sending a lot of Marines to Vietnam and we had a couple of Canadians in our Company, who joined the Marine Corp to get CITIZEN SHIP in the USA , if they completed their enlistment. Well , they decided to DROP OUT and go back to Canada. Looks like they just wanted things in a peaceful situation . Lot of that was going on back then ( draft dodgers fleeing to Canada etc. ) It was a wastful war , just like the current ones . Regardless , when you sign-up and raise that R/Hand you don't run away later.

There's something about this that just really makes you feel emotional as an American. Another country, that your history is based around defeating to make your own country, showing you respect and solidarity during a dark time.
This is incredibly moving. As an American, I will always stand with the UK.
Think of it as England is the father, Canada is the polite lovable younger child and America is the older independent son that left home but no matter the distance, that parent still loves their child.

It's only recently in our snowflake -infested society that we hear "Let us live to make men free." At Churchill's funeral the lyric was certainly "die."

I was there. I had moved to London for a year of study abroad. The kindness and solidarity shown by the good people of England is something I will never forget.
The United Kingdom did so much for us on that terrible day and the weeks afterwards.... To anyone from Britain, or anywhere else that did good for America on that day, thank you. You showed us exactly who our friends are. :) We're forever in your debt.

20 years later, I am sitting here crying. Thank you for your solidarity with us. I am an American who very much feels the deep connection between our two countries, our two people. God Bless Great Britain and God Save the Queen.
I may not be an American nor British for I'm a Filipino. But nonetheless I am also in solidarity with US regarding this.
I was only 5 when 9/11 happened. My memory at that time was vague for I was only 5 but I still remember that my Dad was watching our evening news back then while I was playing with my toy soldiers in front of the Telly back then when an emergency live broadcast of the 9/11 suddenly popped out. At first my dad thought it was only part of the movie he was watching in CBS that night but soon realized that it was a live broadcast of a terrorist attack and told me that I should go to my room.
Fast forward years later, even though I was only young at that time, when I got older, I felt the sadness, fear and anger that the american people felt back then because of the countless lives that was lost during that horrific day.

I'm from the UK. I was around 20 at 9/11. I can tell you, we felt what happened on that day, like it happened to us as well. If you're ever interested look up the British parliament (our government, politicians) reaction after 9/11. You can find it on youtube. Some of the most moving and rousing speeches you'll hear. Put it this way, our bayonets were being sharpened...
As an American, I will never forget the support we got from all over the world. Brits are and will always be my brothers and sisters. Xoxoxo

As I watch this some 20 years after the fact, with the current state of our countries (and the world), I can sincerely say I have never been so inclined to utter the words, but truly God save the Queen!!! I am an American. I am a Texan. I am very proud to be both. But I cannot fully express how touched I have been throughout my life by the things Her Majesty has done. I was fortunate in the early 90s to see the Queen's motorcade after she landed at Love Field in Dallas. The streets/sidewalks were lined with little British flags; we were oblivious. Then the cars began streaming through the gate and I was shocked to see Her Majesty and Prince Philip in the back seat of a limo. There they were, waving at little old nobody me. It probably dud not mean much to me then, as a 19 or 20 year old, but now, at 49 and having witnessed the events of the last 30 years, I can fully appreciate it. This few seconds, those little waves -- I know there are citizens in the UK that have/will never seen their own queen, but I did. I must say, ESPECIALLY after all her support over the years, even if we haven't always agreed, she has seen to it that we had her support. I feel privileged and honored to have caught even a glimpse of her all those years ago. If only she could live 150 years and reign throughout my lifetime. Again I say, from America, God save the Queen!! Please!!!!!!!!!

American here - I was 14 on 9/11/2001 and I never knew until tonight 9/10/2021 that England did this for America during that horrible horrible time. Watching this brought tears to my eyes. As an American, I know we have our differences. We fought a war for independence and won. But through the years, we have become the closest of allies. This just made me weep, all those years ago. I was working as a brand new graduated RN and watched the smoke from the parking deck roof of a hospital in New Brunswick NJ. Remember as if it were yesterday. My childhood best friend was in a office across the street from the Twin towers and my big brother was on the path train on the way there! So many never came home again. Prayers for their souls and God's comfort to their loved ones. Thank you England. My mother's people left England 1633 and settled in America, proud of my English blood. Her grandfather fought for the union to free the slaves. This was the union army's song!

England, once we got over out little squabbles in 1765-84 and 1812-15, has been our staunchest ally.
This was our Mother Country. Our bond will never weaken.
This service is an example of the Queen and country showing America support in our dark hours after 9/11.
Dont forget the diplomatic Squabbles in between 1815 and 1868. Mainly just territorial disputes, and people in the US wanting to seize Canada from the British after the Civil War since they supported the Confederacy.
When you say England you mean all of Great Britain and then the United Kingdom.
My affinity for all things British began when I was eleven years old, watching Dr. Who, Monty Python, Dave Allen at Large, Fawlty Towers, the Two Ronnie's, and many others on PBS. It was cemented by my British councillor's when I went to camp in my teenage years. We're two people separated by a common language. I had nothing but love for you then, and now at 53, I have nothing but love for you still. God bless us all.

2) Those who are arguing that America deserved this really need to learn some cultural sensitivity. The terrorist attacks on September 11th were unprecedented, and if you think otherwise then you are poorly misinformed
The attacks weren't unprecedented. It's just that war and mass death isn't familiar to Americans. Tragedies far worse than 9/11 happen all the time in war-torn regions of the world. That's not to downplay the tragedy of the 9/11 attacks, but nobody seems to care about war and terror unless Americans are killed.

I feel rage and horror for the Holocaust, the slaughter of the victims of Stalin, the savage butchery of the wars when Yugoslavia shattered, the massive genocides that vile racists and zealots have poured out throughout human history, and yet 9/11 shocks me as it was out of the blue and staggering in single day losses. Yet it is again an act of evil, planned by a cabal of evil men. If it and the rest are not horrific to someone then I feel horrified by that individual.

The organ playing and choir is magnificent and the congregation is equally worthy in this wonderful display of raising the rafters of the venerable old St Paul's cathedral in London. Truly a great musical show of respect for the 9/11 tragedy.
Simon Johnson was the Organist and Assistant Director of Music at the service. He deserved a medal from the British and the Americans for his tasteful but powerful playing!

Twenty-two years later, and this still brings to tears to my eyes. As an American whose parents were from the World War II/Pearl Harbor generation, this struck deep and resonant chords in my soul, even more so knowing that Queen Elizabeth was behind this memorial service to reach out to the UK's American allies in a time of pain and anger. Out present administration in Washington would do better to remember who are our real friends and allies are in this world, and with whom we most closely share ties of faith, democratic values and kinship.

This song... not only did I lose my aunt in the North Tower but a few months ago I laid my grandfather to rest with this song.

I remember being quite numb and overwhelmed by the events of 09/11/2001. On Fri., 09/14/2001 I was working from home due to a tropical storm watch (I live in FL), and I had FoxNews on TV. There was a story of world reaction to the 911 attacks; it then showed the playing of the Star Spangled Banner at Buckingham Palace per the direction of Queen Elizabeth, because "she wanted Americans to know they have friends in the world". I was no longer numb, but moved to tears by such kindness.
Makes me cry Everytime. You guys are truely the best Ally's. May God save both of our Nation's! May we all want for now on stand in solidarity. I have a deep love and respect for you guys!

We have since become great friends. With abiding hopes and dreams.
When I listened to this broadcast back in 2001. I was overwhelmed by the great passion expressed to us with this song at that great cathedral in London.

Almost 20 years later, and you got me in tears UK!! I'm from Texas but I'll never forget what happened that day. I was in the 6th grade...about 12 years old at the time. I was in class at the time. My mom was the school nurse and was in the office watching the TV. They tuned into the news after hearing about the first plane hit. They told all the teachers to not turn on the TVs in the classrooms as it would upset the younger kids. I found out after school let out what had happened. She still remembers watching the news in horror as the second plane hit. We were miles and miles away and just as scared cause we didn't know what was happening. That day, lots of parents got off of work and picked their kids up early....and I mean a lot. There was so much news about the attacks that I didn't even know that this happened. This really brought me to tears and is much appreciated even almost 20 years later!
An event you'll never forget, defining a generation. I grew up in SE Texas and remember the day President Kennedy was shot. I was in 2nd Grade, 7 years old. School let out early, and I walked the 2 blocks home. I turned on the TV (I guess I had a house key) and watched the profile picture of Kennedy as no one had words to say. Then Mom came home from work and went to her bedroom to cry. I didn't know much geography, but I knew I lived in Texas, and Dallas was in Texas, and I couldn't understand why someone in Texas would shoot our President. We Texans were all nice people.

I was barely 14 when that morning dawned. In the first few days that followed, I learned a couple of important things....firstly, that I was a patriot. Secondly, I was a member of an international community. Thirdly, I was human rights advocate. Finally, because of this broadcast, I learned that this song existed, where it came from and what it meant, not just to my country, but to me, personally, now that I identified as the above. A year later, my choir adopted this song as the official finale of our joint high-school musical performance each spring.
So, thank you, Great Britain, for introducing me to something that means so much to my fellow citizens and I. God bless the USA. God Save the Queen.
