nah, a cartridge with a larger rim, S&W /Schofield's have a hard time grabbing the rim to extract the casing. Definitley should be in 357 magnum though, perhaps .44 special?

I heard a S&W rep call the 1854 44 mag a “throw back to our heritage”. I’m a 10mm guy since about 1990. Super excited with the S&W M&P 10… bought two. Both jammed regularly, (failure to feed), The magazine fell out the bottom while shooting in both, and on one the supplied plastic optics plate cracked, the screws sheered, and my RMR flew backwards over my head. I sent them back to S&W twice. Failure to feeds continued after receiving them back each time. Called a third time and was transferred to a girl who sounded quite young. She interrupted me, talked over me, and told me that my request that S&W exchange my pistols wasn’t going to happen since the issues were fixable. And she said that I “should shoot better quality ammo”. I guess higher quality than the Federal, Fiocci, Mag Tech, Sig, and Hornady that I had written them about failing, and that I spent a fortune on testing their guns. I filed a BBB complaint but through mediation had no confidence in S&W’s offer to “service my guns”, (for the third time). I wonder if engineering a defective product and then having an arrogant and entitled sounding young lady dismiss your victims is also a throwback to S&W’s heritage; or perhaps rather, they are turning over in their graves.

For the price they have it for I’ll stick to my Henry levers. S&W lost their claim to being high end a very long time ago. Granted when it comes to levers I prefer classic looking lever actions instead of the new/tactical/CoD looking lever actions. My ARs are for M-LOK gear, my lever actions and my single action armies are so I can forget, for a brief moment, that I live in a post modern hellscape.

Zero interest in this rifle. In general though, I’m getting tired of $1,500 to $2,000 lever actions, it’s getting ridiculous.
Also, at $1/round for 44mag, good luck feeding it.

Wood stock would probably be a better sell for me, and I might have thought about releasing it in S&W first cartridges 357, 44, 460, 500. Yes that may be answering a question nobody asked, but I have not seen leverguns in 460 and only can think of one in 500.

For those who care, the LOP according to S&W is between 12.-13" vs the Henry Model X's 14". I just got off the phone with both and Henry has no plans for a shorter LOP though you can order wood furniture for it for about $150 and cut it down yourself. Since the Henry Model X is their only center-fire with a factory threaded barrel and this 1854 comes with it with a shorter LOP, this appears to be a pretty good deal.

It's not even particularly "tacticool." It's just a lever-action rifle that makes use of modern industry standards for optic and accessory mounting. Polymer is lighter and more consistent than wood, and less susceptible to warping in damp conditions. That plus the stainless steel makes this rifle ideal for the southeast or the Pacific northwest.

I think S&W might have came in to hot with this one. They are trying to capitalize on the trending lever gun market, but for a company that does not have a name in the lever action rifle game they just came in too hot. A ton of people have already lost their faith in S&W. Now they introduce a new to them platform rifle priced at almost 1300 and 3900 bucks. Smith should have entered the lever gun market at more of a Rossi/Citedel price point and garnered some followers and fans of it first before they tried stomping the yard with Marlin and Henry. I know supply on them is limited, but I cant tell you how many Ive seen just sitting on the shelf in FFLs in my area with no one giving them attention, while most places around here couldn't keep a 44 magnum Henry or Marlin on the shelf for 48 hours. It just signifies to me that S&W my have reached to far with this one, but time will tell.

Where is your free gun Yankee? I think Smith and Wesson has given a 1854 gun to every other gun channel out there. You have given the only honest assessment of the marketing of this gun I have seen- total mistake to not establish a wood version before the tactical version. I disagree with you about the tube though- if it is removable, you need to be able to load thru it, otherwise you lose 1/2 of its functionality. I have become so used to loading and unloading thru the tube on my Henrys, that I would hard think buying any lever gun without that feature.

Have to disagree with one comment you made here. You said this is the only "stainless" 44 mag lever action available. Not quite right as Henry has the 44 mag All Weather. This one is actually matte chrome plated steel with black wood stocks and a 20" barrel. I know this to be true since I have one. I am not a huge fan of straight grips which is what I had to settle for with the Henry. If I had known this was coming out with the pistol grip, I would have waited for this. Oh well, I may have to have 2 lever actions in 44 mag!

It may be much better than Henry, but not Remington Marlin. I say Remington because they made the best Marlin lever guns ever. If you shoot one you will know how good they are. Remington also sold them at a price the average Joe could afford. Ruger is scalping people with their inflated price point. Remington only four years ago sold their 30-30’s for under $400, Ruger now sells theirs for around $1,200. Same with the 1895’s Remington four years ago $ 630, Ruger now sells theirs for around $1,500 for the American Walnut type
and Stainless for $1,800. Thank you Smith and Wesson to the rescue!M

I don't get the point. If you want to have a modern lever action, then build one, if you want something old fashioned, also fine, there's plenty. But an old fasioned lever action with a few modern features... What for? Playing stainless wild west in the rain or hunting with a subadequate weapon. Cold have put a box mag in, could have made a free floating barrel, etc. but instead fitted a weird looking picatinny.

There’s no way that design is from an 1854 patent. That has features that weren’t developed until decades later.

Dirty Harry would be proud to see this rifle. He would have a pistol and rifle in the same caliber. Go ahead with Make My Day.

S&W + lever action = Volcanic rifle or pistol..... This one is a swing and a miss for me.

Sacrilegious to put a composite stock on a lever gun. It took me years to accept stainless steel finish. But I'll never appreciate or buy one with plastic furniture.

Of course they ruin a nice gun with a cross block safety. Typical Smith and Wesson. I’ll pass.

The stainless body and barrel turns me off. Too bright and shiny for me. I want my guns low key, not flashy.

Do you always review firearms you don't have in your possession?

It's made in Italy. If I'm going to buy what appears to be a 2nd rate copy of a Marlin, I'd prefer a real Marlin. You want Italian, buy an Uberti. This rifle appears to be the result of corporate boardroom confusion. Focus on your core product. If your marketing team has exhausted their bag of ideas, maybe it's time to kick ass & clean house. Maybe they've lost touch with their civilian base of hunters, target shooters & competitive shooters. S&W has purchased & destroyed one of the finest American firearms companies of the latter 20th century. Thompson Center. Think of the possibilities that could have been explored with that combination. What's next, cast zinc non-firing replicas made in China? If I buy a S&W, I want it made by S&W.

Love lever actions but they have to be true to original designs. If you modernize them you lost me.

Henrys are all modern design. I just don't believe that the smartest designers of lever guns only lived in the late 1800s. There are smart people today too.
