Split Enz - One Step Ahead - Official Video - 1980 - Remastered
• Split Enz - One Step A...
"One Step Ahead" is a song by New Zealand group Split Enz. It was released in November 1980 as the lead single from their sixth studio album "Waiata" and peaked at #5 and #6 in Australia and New Zealand respectively.

This song is soooo ahead of it's time. This is 1980, yet it still sounds modern today. Split Enz is amazing. This is why bands like the smiths, pearl Jam and radiohead put Split Enz right up there with the beatles as the best band ever....
Lyrics
One step ahead of you
stay in motion, keep an open mind
Love is a race won by two
Your emotion, my solitude
If I stop I could lose my head
So I'm losing you instead
Either way I'm confused
You slow me down, what can I do?
There's one particular way I have to choose
One step ahead of you
Always someone makes it hard to move
She says, Boy I want you to stay
But I save it all for another day
If I stop I could lose my head
But I'm ready for romance
Either way I'm confused
I don't know what I'm supposed to do
I can only stay
One step ahead of you
Da, da, da, da, da
Da, da, da, da
Da, da, da, da
Da, da, da, dumb
Stop, I confess sometimes
I don't know where I'm going
Part of me stays with you,
I'm slowing down, what can I do
It's hard to stay one step ahead of you
(Uh huh)
One step ahead of you
Time is running out
Catching up with you
One step ahead of you
When I hold you close
Can I really lose?
One step ahead
Only one step ahead
She's one step ahead of you - เพลง
I heard a quote years ago, Somebody asked Paul McCartney "How does it feel to be the best songwriter in the world?" His answer, "Ask Tim Finn."
Neil*
That's falsely told about several several songwriters. Because McCartney was going on a tour of Australia and New Zealand, on Facebook he was asked about that "quote": "McCartney also confirmed in the over-30 minute chat that the long-running rumour he once referred to Crowded House frontman, Neil Finn, as the world's greatest songwriter is false." He added that he liked Finn's songwriting. That's all.
In another interview, he said he admires Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Neil Young, and Paul Simon.
@@SorendeSelbyBowen Yet, he stated in a far earlier interview that he agreed with the comment.
It is a British thing to see saw between two different opinions over time, depending on how they are doing at the time they are asked, whenever a topic comes up from the former colonies, and whether the asker is British or from a different former colony.
Their Prime Ministers do it all the time, so it is not just entertainers. The only ones that do not do this, are the Royals.
@@shauntempley9757 You have a cite? I'm interested, because everybody who has said that can't come up with a cite, it's always "I read it somewhere." Thanks.
@@SorendeSelbyBowen I heard him say it in an interview when I was in High School, during a rare solo tour of NZ.
I then heard him in a later interview in the UK denying he said that.
Split enz is one of the best bands of all time. Nothing like them ever or will be just legendary
Split Enz was an arty band. Tim’s brother Neil Finn (who later started Crowded House) took lead vocals on this one.
This is after TIm Finn's little brother Neil joined the group. He went on to form Crowded House and has been labelled by the likes of McCartney as one of the greatest lyricists of all time.
Split End were a very, very underrated band and deserved more airplay than they got back in the day. Some people were listening though....Neil Finn was invited to be Lindsay Buckingham's vocal replacement on Fleetwood Mac's last tour.
There are SO many great Enz songs!
Great New Zealand band.
Hell yah, you got it. I was listening to them right after high school in 1975 when I became a huge fan. The brothers Neil and Tim Finn produced so much genius music with Split Enz, and then went off on separate and solo careers for a while, but continued to collaborate. I got to see Neil Finn's spinoff group, Crowded House ("Don't Dream It's Over") live in 1990, when half way through the set, Tim Finn came out and reconstituted Split Enz for the rest of the set. The crowd went nuts with many attendees holding up album covers of Split Enz records. It was like a reunion of Lennon and McCartney. It is one of my top 5 concert memories in my life.
40 years later i still play this loud on pacific coast highway
And yes, Eddie Rayner is moonwalking in this film clip three years before Michael Jackson made it popular!
He's on the right starting around 7:30
Those keys are amazing.
Ahh my early teenage years! Such a fun time in life...Great reaction as always!
Mine too. The memories
Loving the Enz memories, fantastic band.
Split Enz who became crowded house, there songs get in your head like an earwig
Split Enz...Give It A Whirl.
Killer song
This band has always sent shivers down my spine!!
The keyboard work on this is brilliant!
The great Eddie Rayner!
@@dougmedina4619 Eddie is amazing. :)
If you like this one, you'll love Hard Act to Follow's synth work.
EDDIE IS AMAZING!
Neil is AMAZING!
I loved them since I saw them on SNL in 1981 when I was 13. I was obsessed. I got to see Tim Finn in San Francisco in 1989.
You’re doing the Enz? Great! Of course, this one was very different to My Mistake, and was written by a young Neil Finn
One of my favourite ever bands. Tim and Neil Finn - brothers and complete geniuses. Amazing songwriters and their voices blended so beautifully together ❤
Split Enz are a great band.
Thankyou for bringing me back to our teen years - and our Blue Light discos ttimes!
The Album this was off was True Colours the record was lazer etched so when it spun around you could see all the colours of the spectrum shining off it. It was cool.
The chord changes in this song are effortless, which makes the smoothness of the song. You would struggle at that time to find a song anywhere that compares to the flow of this song. It changes, but it flows, and that is what all musicians strive for.
I call this song slinky
No chorus either.
@@colinfuller6361 which makes it better. Prince was famous for not having a chorus
So happy to run across this channel and reaction to one of my favorite songs of all time. I was 7 or 8 when this song came out and first saw the video on MTV. Instantly fell in love with it and have never gotten tired of it. Thank you!
Great memories of this song from my childhood.
I saw them in Ann Arbor in 82. Great show. They played mostly songs from True Colours, Waiata, and Time and Tide.
You should react to some Crowded House songs, Neil Finn's next band, still touring today!! I went to see their concert recently, Neil still sounds the same and played so many guitars and the Piano!!
Eddie's forward moon walk starting at 7:26 Eat your heart out, Michael Jackson.
Any band that has the Finn brothers in it is gonna be a quality band.
Split Enz & Crowded House - Tim Finn & brother Neil Finn
We paint our downstairs den like this in the summer of 81.
The two toned steps.
Black walls with the graphic "laser" lines.
It was very cool.
It was also back in the days before great central AC - very cool.
We had a big TV down there. That we never could move out. 😂
I would be half an hour late to a party next door. I'll give my self plenty of time to get ready, but then get caught up reading or writing and boom! I'm late.
Just give me a starting time 30 minutes before the event.
That's not including the anxiety attacks though. Then I just don't show. Or I'll sneak in late and hide in a corner. Then help with any clean-up afterward. I'll usually be one of the last to leave because that's how I show how important the event was to me.
Definitely young people can like Split Enz. This is alternative music.
Split Enz are seriously quirky and occasionally absolutely awesome!
Great song, great reaction. Thanks guys 👍
Very early MTV. Always dug this song and others by the split endz despite the fact that at the time I primarily listened to hard rock music.
God i love this song well said Dei
I'm always early as F..K to gigs and late for everything else
I got you
So Tim Finn let his little brother Neil join the band, who then promptly took it to its greatest success and biggest hits.
The silhouette of the girl at the end is sublime , what a great video
I got you Split Enz
Australia invented the music video, so there was a lot of artistic videos like this.
Was when I was 15 years old I thought a great group I try say buy albums you will like the song in movies soundtrack of angel
I love The Finns
You gotta check out Dexys Midnight Runners "This Is What She's Like!"
Take a look at "ONE STEP BEYOND" by Madness. it is free-based ska.
I think you guys might like Chris Knox 'Not Given Likely'.
I would just love to see you two react to either Stand By by Roman Holiday or The tracks of my tears by Carmel.
I dare you!
So pretty. Hold on tight.
SEs best song imho.
This video was one of MTV's earliest, and don't you think Michael Jackson got some ideas from it? Starting with the white shoes or the beginnings of a moon walk at 7:38 by Eddie Raynor.
My Mistake-Split Enz
Moon walk pre MJ
Tim was good, but Neil had a better voice, and his delivery was phenomenal. He was a better writer too. Once he got a tad older and was able to do most of the lead vocals, it really became his band, as this song shows. You can listen to this song, and hear the similarities to Neil's solo work and Crowded House. don't think Split Enz would have transitioned into a serious band under Tim's leadership. IME, under Tim they would have continued to be an art band, and like so many others of that era and that original style, faded out.
One other band that made the successful transition from a variety act / artsy band, into a powerhouse of hits around the same time, is The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, forned in 72' and led by Richard Elfman. It was pretty much art and theater students that did elaborate street performaces, Richard was a up and coming movie producer and actor. In 76' it was taken over, again as in Split Enz, by a much more talented younger brother, Danny Elfman, Danny kept the theme and the name, but he had real drive and purpose, and got the on the Gong Show. A few years later, he changed the format to a real band, dropped everyone but the core players, and replaced a few of them, and changed the name to simply, Oingo Boingo, with a New Wave sound and a post punk edge. If you haven't done Just Another Day, or Stay by them , you should.
Oingo Boingo. 😂
If anything Split Enz was Eddie and Noels band more than Tim's.
This song has no chorus!..❤
Split Enz were awesome, so much better than Crowded House
They were a novelty and hard to take until Neil joined.
Do you realise that you have talked about nothing for longer than the length of the song. This is also (in part) why Australians and New Zealanders find Americans annoying... There was 4:30 minutes of pre-amble here. and the song lasts for about 2:45 ish...
