No, the album used a live drum kit - no drum machine. The keyboards (Eddie Rayner) are amazing. He was / is a very talented keyboard player - a lot of their songs that use fast arpeggios he played without electronic assistance. Check out the song “Bullet Brain and Cactus-head” for one of the most off the wall keyboard solos.
Oh my goodness. I’d forgotten how incredible this track was. I just hit the subscribe button because I love your appreciation of this awesome group. Keep it coming! I’m a happy kiwi 🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿
New Zealand, take a bow! I cannot tell you how much I love this song. I love that Split Enz was so much more than a pop band. Soi talented. Message To my Girl ia another song they did that I have continued to love since I first heard it.
To continue the metaphor, if someone's in a long-distance relationship, they may be too poor to afford to visit their love. Split Enz were great. Basically two different bands over the years - very arty and prog for the first few years of there existence, then switching to a new wave/pop sound (after original leader Phil Judd left and was replaced by Neil Finn). So many great songs: "I See Red", "I Hope I Never", "Message to My Girl", "Shark Attack", "Straight Old Line", "Give it a Whirl"... and the whole True Colours album is ridiculously good. One of the best bands ever to come out of my homeland of New Zealand. This line-up had Mal Green on drums and Noel Crombie on additional percussion, plus the Finn brothers, Nigel Griggs on bass, and the band's secret weapon, the great Eddie Rayner on keyboards.
I saw them in the early 80s a Fiesta Gardens in Austin Texas. It was an outdoor concert by Town Lake. I remember how good this song sounded in the summer evening air.
My hubby's and mine favourite Split Enz song! However, now you need to go back to the 70s, when they started out. They were so quirky, you'll see what I mean. I suggest, I see red That was my mistake Official videos please?
So I have said it before and I will say it again-in Australia or New Zealand-when bands are starting they do the pub live music scene-they learn honesty and truth the absolutely believe in their music and love their fans-as far as I know has ever been accused of limp sicking--just as bon Scott told them!-it's a hard road and a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll-they accept that and do the hard yards all the same-and that makes them Legends and gods!.
Ooh this was unfamiliar even though I'm a Gen X music nerd. I was only turning 8 in 1980 and that era just keeps on giving. The punk, postpunk and new wave hooked me via Ramones, Talking Heads, Police, Clash, Cure, Psychedelic Furs, Social D, Husker Du, Replacements... Also I saw Weird Al in 1984!
hey there is another version of this song well 2 in fact ,,from ENZSO enzso is split enz with the new zealand sympathy orchestra Tim Finn & Eddie Raynor put it together but with various NZ musicians on vocals covering there songs ,now Dave Dobbyn sang on Poor Boy & honestly he killed it on that his vocals really suited that song is was like it was written for him ,check it out Dave Dobbyn Poor Boy Enzso..
In the Album Split Enz, History Repeats, is is stated that the story refers to a boy that falls in love with a real allien Girl from outer space. With Six Months in a Leaky Boat my favorite Enz' Songs.
We liked to visualise the meaning to the song directly..(even though the detail was not explained, its easy to complete). about a socially awkward guy who obviously spends most of his time in his bedroom playing with technology and believes he has discovered his true love speaking to him in odd UHF frequency that only he can understand originating from a far far away strange female alien from deep in space, of which she's so far away he knows he will never be able to visit her because of the vast distance between them... this kind of imaginary story together with perfect lyrics and a perfect song makes for a great experience to grow up with in NZ....

I consider them to be New Zealand's greatest band.
Easily - it was a band full of superstars. I’ve been listening to them for 40 years, and I’m still blown away by their inventive compositions.
@@zoeherriot yup I've got no arguments with you
Yup
King county boys🍻
You made a former 14-year old Kiwi girl very happy! The sounds of my teenage years growing up in New Zealand ❤
I see you’ve listened to “I Got You”. “One Step Ahead”, “History Never Repeats”, and “Message to my Girl” are all great.
Growing up as a poor boy this resonates with me! Great song and band!

The Finn brothers later collaborated on the Crowded House album _Woodface_ -- which is chock-full of wonderfully melodic, and lyrically dense, tunes.
'Woodface' is amazing. They also released two great albums (in 1995 and 2004) as The Finn Brothers.
Message To My Girl and I’ve Got You are musts off this album. I owned the picture disc with colored lasers on it. 😁
My second favorite Enz song (after “The Devil You Know”). You should also check out “My Mistake” and “Things.”
The Devil you know? DD Smash?

The Managers Ska band from Auckland covering THAT WAS MY MISTAKE
By Split Enz
Love the part of the song where he sings ‘ keep losing you’
Poor Boy is one of the Enz's best tracks IMO.
