!THAT! was a brilliant review. Pretty much covers all the things that aren’t usually covered properly. The 770 Pro 250 Ohm headphones were the first studio cans I ever owned due to a good friend of mine working for beyerdynamic. I still love them and most other headphones in the price range were a let down compared. After all these years! Many more expensive headphones came after them, but I still return to them frequently and they still are my drum monitor. Even after 12 years, my first pair is running like the first day. I love them. Just a great pair of headphones.
There's just something about them, that special combination of qualities. I have the AKG K371 which I think are probably technically superior in terms of sound. But I just keep coming back to the 770.
Wheezy Reviews I actually just bought the K371s. They are way superior in many aspects but I experience the issue that depending on the song, the vocals sometimes overpower the rest (feeling like a Peak, in my ears, should have been more present between 1.5k and 2k instead of 2.5-3k) and that a lack in presence of frequencies around 50-100Hz (especially compared to the sub bass regions) lead to bass drums drowning in the mix or then again, in other songs, being to harsh. Then, sometimes, they get completely lost against sub 50Hz some bass sounds which drives me nuts. I never had those issues with any other cans, respectively the DTS.
I (mistakedly) purchased the Beyer Dynamic DT770M. They are isolating, but that's it, they sound s&*%!
Just stumbled across this vid. Excellent summary of the DT 770 250. I have a couple of these and they are an excellent well rounded headphone. I have one pair of DT 770's that just recently broke. The cable seems to have broken or come out of its clamp in the ear cup and now the right channel has stopped. I'll be fixing them this weekend. But it should be noted that this set of DT 770 250's are a little over 7 years old and have been used every day for several hours daily during that time. This set was my daily workhorse headphone. So keep that in mind when buying. It will hold up for years even with daily use.

I'm very happy that I went with these headphones! And being so repairable, I'm ecstatic at that! I'll absolutely be modifying mine once the 3yr warranty runs out on my pair. The cable was absolutely the one big point of contention for me, but if they're that easily repairable / moddable, it's not an issue!
Yeah I've been covering the DT770 for a long time of course, and that's a good observation about the bass. Back when I started, even the 250 ohm was considered a basshead headphone. But nowadays with Harman saying a bass shelf is desirable, it might be considered just right

I use my dt770 250ohm with a Astro mixamp. Its used for movies and sounds fantastic. I have to go to half volume on the mixamp to get to a decent listening level. I thought the mixamp would be under powered but it does work. The headphones sound full and robust with decent soundstage.

I've owned a pair from 2012 and this is a very accurate review. I recently changed to HD 650 as my daily driver, but I always come back to this pair as they sound so good with a little EQ.
What do u use to drive them?

So far from all of the reviews on these I've watched/read, it seems the big sell point is the coiled cable, well I'm sold.
thank you for the detailed review! i bought a set based on this review. i have a ATH-WS1100 i will be replacing for them with these. i am new to the audio game from the general gamer headphones. i cant stand the AT brand at this point anymore since i have had 2 of these headphones plastic fail at the earcup. having a large head is a curse
listening to these on my dt770 pro's I got off an auction. I wasn't really into audio before this, but I bought a cheap amp (e10k) and hooked em up and they are nice for what I got em for. Although I didn't notice *much* of a difference between hooking them up to my monitor and my dac/amp combo

Hey, I have a question.
I’m debating on either the 250 ohm vs 80 ohm. I’m going to be using a MOTU M2 to power them.
My question is, in my specific scenario I play games, and also do simple in-home vocal recording and mixing. Which one would be best?
I now use these with just a cheap simple tube amp, the Bravo Ocean tube amp. And what a match made in heaven. The sound is simply fabulous. Highs and mids are very good. But the bass is what make this headphone so fun to use. I use primarily for movies. Watching the remake of Dawn of tbe Dead and wow the bass is more than i could wish for. When tbere was a gun shot, explosions i could feel the bass. Music has a very nice lean and precise punch to it. Overall this is a very good headphone that shines for movies and is fun to use.
Another excellent review. The DT770s were my favourite closed back for many years. I have owned a pair of 250ohms and now own a more recent 80ohm version. The 250ohms sounded like they had a little less bass and perhaps ever so slightly more refined/boosted treble. I kept the 80ohms because I decided the bass sounded just as clean to my ears, and I liked the boost :p Also the treble differences were much harder to tell, I spent a good few weeks with both and could still not reliably tell which one was which on tracks with no bass.
I would still be using my 80ohms if I hadn't gone into store and tested them against K371s, DT1770s & MMX300s (I took my Topping DX3 Pro into store to test with me haha) I liked the sound of the K371s but they did not seem to have good positioning in the tracks I used to test so I felt they would not be very good for gaming, which is just as important to me as music. The DT1770s and MMX300s sounded quite similar, but after 20min of ab testing I decided I liked the MMX300s sound better. I felt they were slightly cleaner all over the frequency response, which was shocking to me as the MMX300s are only 32ohms.. I have owned them a few weeks now and I still think they have the cleanest treble resolution out of any closed back I have heard. Already shrill sounding tracks that are slightly sibilant to my ears on all other beyer closed backs I owned or tested are just clean sounding on the MMX300s. The treble is still lifted, definitely more so than a DT770 80ohm, so probably slightly more than a DT770 250ohm as well. Probably around the same quantity as a DT990 actually, but the refinement and improved detail in the high end makes them much more listenable and enjoyable to me. Also for gaming these are like laser pinpointers - soundstage width feels the same so not sure if it's the imaging that has been tightened up or if it's the treble resolution that makes it noticeably easier to track enemies accurately than on my DT770 80ohms.
Thanks for your detailed comment. I really want the 1770 but I have heard they aren't worth it over the 770 as they don't sound much if any better. I'd still like to check them out. The MMX300 looks like a good option. I suppose its a closed back 880 with a mic attached.

Just got my DT770 250 ohm the day before you posted this review. I agree with everything said. These are such solid all-rounders that I think they will always have a place in my collection. They are legends. Out of curiosity what amps did you power them with? I use a Monolith Liquid Spark and it is a pretty sweet pairing.

Interesting. I remember the 250ohm version sounding a bit hollow in the mid range. Looks like I'll have to get one in again. Wish the custom studio was easier to get, it is still Imo the best sounding "dt770".

I don't know why the custom studio needs to be such a price jump from the 770. I've been wanting to check it out for a while.
Wheezy Reviews I cant even find them where I live anymore. From memory they have the bass and mid range of the 250ohm (on linear bass position) but with the more toned down treble of the 80ohm(even less sharp IIRC) You loose a tad bit of soundstage but having treble that is just as detailed and a lot less sharp plus a removable cable is easily worth it IMO.
But price seems to be higher because of the removable cable and it seems to be less distributed as it just didn’t caught on in the semi mainstream market like the DT770 did. The removable cable I’ve also seen more than a few people have issues with it.
But I’m guessing it cost more to make and the broader market still eats up the DT770 so they could just want to cut costs and push the DT770 more. But that’s just a theory.

How is the bass extension of custom Studio? Is it better or same as dt 770
@@shashankgarewal I don't have the 770. About the custom studio, they are quite neutral and dry. With sliders is possible to set bass intensity. For video games I prefer everything down, Iron maiden 1 step above and for Tool 2 steps above. CS sound cold but precise, not warm at all.

Awesome review. I bought the Dt 770 80ohn a few days ago and I'm enjoying them a lot. However, I'm missing some of the Soundstage that I had when I tried the Fidelio X2HR ( replaced them because of the piercing treble).
Your review of the HD 599 got me thinking... do you think i should go for the HD 599 or keep the Dt 770?
Or since I like the Dt 770, the Dt 990 would be the better choice?
If you have a little more money to spare go and get the Hifiman Sundara. They were the perfect upgrade to my Fidelio X2! The soundstage is a little smaller, but the detail and Imaging are way better

Hi! I am searching for nice sound at moderate volume. I am adding vocals to piano tracks. I like what you said about being inspired by the sound but I have sensitive ears and want to protect myself from hearing loss. Would these 250 ohms headphones work with my Motu M2 pre-amp? And would they be isolating enough in a recording session? (You mentioned some sound leakage.)
I have a Motu M4 and just tested both the 80 and 250 ohm versions with them, both were loud enough, with the 80 ohm being able to reach a higher volume. In terms of how isolating they are, I've used them for monitoring spoken word and it hasn't leaked into a dynamic mic. They should be fine if you don't have them at a high volume but they do leak more sound than stuff like the 7506 or m50/m40.
If you like closed back I'd HIGHLY recommend the Denon AH-D2000 There very old hat now an there is probably a better modern equivalent. But I've used mine to death. I'm looking at Beyers just to round out my closed back can collection.
1more triple headphones are comfy on-ear, and with a little mod (found on Head-fi) they sound truly amazing ! They are very very cheap on amazon.co.uk these times. I had mine for about 60 pounds.
how much the sound improved? i have these headphones without mod and honestly i hate them.
@@nonenothing4412 It depends how you hate them. with the mod, less bass (but still not as precise as plannar of course), better detail retrieval in the mids, and clearer highs. If your problem is distortion in the bass region, it's still here but less proeminent. with the mojo, the are ok, but with a more neutral dac/amp (such as the apple dongle) it's a delight. But maybe your hate is for something else. Crossovers ? My pure personal hate is for the DT770 80ohms.
I use these for gaming and they are amazing. Sound is very clear. Very flat sounding compared to other gaming headphones. They work very very good for gaming. I do recommend these, I use these on pc, not sure how console would work.

The 2i2 struggles to properly drive the 770 so I would use a separate headphone amp

I can't say 100% as I don't have that phone but I do have the 80 ohm 770 here too and it's much easier to drive off of my phone than the 250 ohm version

I'm very new to this high end headphone stuff and recently I got sick of using these cheap amazon headphones that don't produce low end at all. I have a Focusrite Scarlett Solo interface and that's what I have my microphone plugged into. I was looking at the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro's and I think I would want the 250ohm option because I heard it's better for music and general listening. But I have also heard that they might be too quiet or just sound wrong if now powered correctly.
How can I power 250 ohm headphones using a Scarlett solo, and do you guys have any budget recommendations?

I have only tried the K371 and 770 but personally I would pick the 80 Ohm 770 for movies, tv and games. The K371 for music.

Man, I dont know why all the reviews keep saying 250ohm needs an amp. Ive been using mine in my phone, computer, or guitar pedal, to block out noise, no problem, without having to crank the volume.
@@GeeMorno honestly i agree, it’s not super necessary to use an amp. it’s not very loud without one but it’s not quiet at max. but i’ve found when i use one it sounds cleaner and gives more separation to different parts of the mix. all preference when it comes down to it though, and i may just be trying to justify my purchase😂 oh well
@@gwendohshidt No need to justify your purchase. I think you did great. I love my 250ohmers. I did have a thought about what I said, & it did cross my mind about what you said; frequencies do seem to clear up & mixes seem more clear with a bit of a boosting help. Im still content with simply using my phone only. Its JUST enough, where I can block out, outside noise without cranking my ears off. But in louder places, most likely the level would not be enough. Those are the places where I resort to my in ears, rather than cranking the volume, I try to isolate outside noise first, before raising levels. Ive gone too many years as a child cranking junky 80s headphones, sterios, guitars, drums, mixing, live shows & attending concerts. So with that, AND the construction noise at work being a stage hand; Ive REALLY become cautious, & sensitive. My ears ring after every over exposure to sound, so at age 40, I can already sense fatigue early, & it seems to come even quicker these days. But I mainly bought these with reference mixing in mind at night. But listening to Dream Theatre with these, sure do make me hear a lot of things I never heard in the songs, previous to using these. Ive contamplated making a second lirchse, so that Im not wearing out my precious 250ohmers. But im worried about going lower in ohms & possibly sacrificing the main reason as to why I love these so much. But hey, hope these are still working out for you & thanks for the response.

Focusrite Support: For all 1st Gen, 2nd Gen, and 3rd Gen Bus-Powered Scarlett interfaces (Solo, 2i2, 2i4, and 4i4), iTrack Solo and Saffire 6 USB look for headphones with a maximum impedance of 200 ohms.
xDGx does this mean 80ohms are preferable for the Scarlett 212?
it does not actually, I just got them today and connected to the focusrite solo they are not as loud as they should be. My ZST's in ear headphones are surprisingly great when connected to the focusrite
Interesting- as a user of ATH50s for 15 years having 3 pairs as a music lover you mentioned how you prefer Open back ? Perhaps I should try a pair of Grado’s since I want to have a new listening experience and people rave about them ?

m50 is a garbage of headphones and you want Grado which also is company with flawed headphones (all of them), if someone claim to love music usually invest in that hobby meanwhile you use some cheap headphones most likely with cheap source not knowing how your music should really sounds
Nice review! What do you mean under that it must be run through preamp because the phones can't power it. I'm tying one now, with my UAD arrow. Lower 30% lower the volume than my M40X but, on 75% volume it's very loud with music and guitar. With iphone 11pro, the sound loudh enough to enjoy the music. Or what you say means, that without a proper preamp it doesn't has proper sound details, lacks sound quality? UAD arrow manual says it runs 32ohm with 98miliwatts and 600 ohm with 32 miliwatts, and the DT needs around 90-95miliwatts to run properly. I hope you understand what I mean! Thanks!
If you have a good output from your interface or phone then you should be fine. My phone struggles with them and so does my Focusrite interface. But the Focusrite 2i2 doesn't have a particularly good headphone out.
@@WheezyTech Thanks for the answer! With the scarlet your volume is unsiffucient and hear less detail? Is it a noticable difference? Sorry for this noobish questions, but on other forums everybody says need amp, no volume, no details, on UAD arrow, because it powerd via thunderbolt. But the only notable difference what I hear is that, i have to turn the volume 30% up. Now listening music loud on 50% volume. I know if sounds good to me, it's good, but if i can achieve better details with the 80ohm version I'm going to change them :)

A shot there looks like these plugged directly into a Focusrite Scarlett interface, yet they recommend nothing above 200 ohms for use with this. How does your 250 ohm perform with this, or do you use an amplifier?
I have used them with the 2i2 Gen 2 and they get to a reasonable volume, tired with the 2i2 gen3 and its not as loud but its doable. However, using them as a monitor with the direct monitoring feature on the interface is a no go. The interface lowers its output when direct monitoring is on and it just wont drive them loud enough.

I got these babies today and I thought they will be great with my focusrite solo but they were not, they are not as loud as they should be so I guess a headphones amp is a must...unless I am doing something wrong connecting them to the focusrite? anyone? also, does this mean that if I return these and get the 80 ohms version they will sound great on the focusrite? thank you
Focusrite have a pretty low output so it struggles to drive the 770. The gen 2 Focusrites were a little bit better at that than the gen 3 but still not that loud. Best to use the 770 with a proper headphone amp.
I got mine with straight Cable . It is 250 Ohms Mine sound amazing I don't know why some don't like it. I didn't have any problem to drive them at all. I love mine. I also have DT990 pro 250 Ohms and Premium 600 Ohms and Premium 600 Ohms. DT880 . I love them all. . The VModaCrossFade LP2 I don't like them that much. Beyerdynamic are the best for me.

Hey Wheezy. Good review. You made me notice other aspects of these cans. I have the 250 Ohm version as well. Allow me to ask... Have you tried listening Metallica's Black Album with it? It's very bright to my taste, for instance.

The way the drums on that album are mixed always struck me as annoyingly bright, which is only going to be pushed even more forward by the 770

I left the DT770 for EDM and heavy metal in general, for instance.
To conclude, I'll leave a very cool song to listen with the DT770: "Kickstart my heart" by "Mötley Crüe'". Sound is huge on these cans.

I been trying to get use too them as my new headphones for music production but holy fuck everything feels so bright, shit sounds like it’s sizzling , Ssssssss
I find it strange how many people claim that these headphones are hard to drive off phones. I have an exynos Samsung s8 plus and even with a EQ and preamp of - 4dB, I still get plenty of volume out of these. Even with things with more dynamic range, I don't find myself maxing out the volume, nearly at all. Maybe for very high dynamic range stuff I would need to max out the volume and maybe even turn off the EQ, but I don't think its impossible to run these off a decent phone.
No doubt there are phones that can drive the 250 to reasonable levels. I basically have to max my OP6 out to play to a reasonable volume and anything with any dynamic range is just no good with my phone. Same goes for using these as monitors with an audio interface, I just cannot hear myself loud enough in the monitoring with my Focusrite. So yeah its not so much that its impossible to drive these with portable devices but that its often not easy.
Will the Fiio E10K be enough power for these? Thanks in advance!
I have no interest in the DT770 but I watched the review just because I love to hear your take on audio. The only thing I remember about the 770 is Anna kendrick's character uses it in Pitch Perfect lul.

Really in-depth review. However, I would like to see how you are driving these for your use. I notice you have a Scarlet audio interface. How does that fare with powering 250 ohm headphones?
I use an O2 amp to drive these. The Focusrite will drive them for audio playback but when using them as a monitoring headphone using the direct monitor feature they are too quiet to hear myself.

The 250 ohm version do sound better than the 80 ohm. Higher impedance has many sonic advantages. They need to be well amplified to reach their potential for sure. Good review.

@@ioguapin 2 watts at what impedance level? Typically, headphone amp manufacturers state their output wattage initially into 16 ohm, and then rate higher impedance. They also show the lower wattage result at higher impedance. By 250 ohm, your headphone amp is probably at 500mw or less. Is that enough? In the case of the Beyer DT770, maybe, maybe not, as it also has pretty low sensitivity. If memory serves, it's around 93db? Totally will depend on what you're doing and how loud you need things to be. Impedance is a factor, for sure, but sensitivity is also a factor in pushing volume to your ears.

Flat EQ sounding with good sound isolation for mic recording work.
Having owned and still own this exact headphone for over 8 years now..The head band plastic holder/clips are still on but broken, patched up, broken again, patched up again, original cable broke some time later so i forced myself to do a removable cable mod 2 years ago. in the mean time i replaced the soft grey earpads for black ones snug fit and its black so absolutely worth it. am now considering to do a bluetooth mod but am hesitant due to the 250ohm part, meaning it needs power to fully enjoy its features.. any word on that?

ATH-M50x or DT770 Pro 80ohms?
DT770... I have both (well I have the 250 ohms) but I gave up on the ATH-M50X for music because the boosted 1k in them makes everything sound weird.... even the best mixed, best produced music sounds different in them, I can hear the boosted 1k in everything and it made me nuts.
I use these with a Motu M2 audio interface. Powers the 250 ohm version just fine for studio work. Almost bought a Schiit Magni headphone amp when i made the purchase, but the Motu's headphone amp is plenty.
Motu M2/4 is awesome one of the very few desktop interfaces with a good headphone amp
Odd my M4 barely powers my 250oh SE. Ordered a Douk U3 to power it in monitor mode for VO/Calls with my Earthworks Ethos. Is there a setting in the M4 to make it high power in monitor mode?
NOTE : You do NOT need a Headphone AMP IF you have something like a mixer.
But what about the K371?
Its a great headphone that I think in terms of sound is technically better than the DT 770 for sure. There's just something about the 770 that makes me want to use it more on a daily basis.
DT770 has a way better soundstage than the AKG, but the FR is much more V shaped and colored. Tradeoffs. Both are good at their price and I own both.
i bought a pair of dt770 pro 250 ohms and my phone actually has wnough power to drive it. (Xiaomi Redmi 9T)
Oh no, the K371 does > not < sound better than these. These > are < the best-sounding full-size, closed-back under $200.
Mine's eight years old and still going strong.
All LG phones since the V30 have a 32 bit quad DAC built in. Can drive up to 600 ohms. Just ordered the dt770 250 ohm version.
Nice, LG seem to be the only phone company that really cares about wired audio. I always forget about LG, they seem to have fallen off the face of the earth in the UK at least, phone shops don't carry them anymore.
@@WheezyTech the majority is stuck in their Samsung / IPhone box. I would recommend ordering one online. I had to. They're sold out locally here in the states. You won't regret it. It's like having a portable DAC&. I plan to use it at the gym and when I don't want to hear my kids. That's why I went closed back.

Your eyes are huge.
I use this for audio mixing and they are almost suspiciously good compared to other headphones... with a headphone amp you can hear problems in a mix that you can't hear with other headphones... makes you panic and worry their are problems in mixes before you used them -- but just the same.. if you can't hear those problems in any other headphones are they really problems, or is it JUST these headphones? I've even found professional mixes from major label albums that have tons of noticeable artifacting in the sound with these.
