  • My review of the legendary Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80ohm - still my personal favorite closed back under $200. How does it stack up against the ATH-m50X? The CM MH751? How to pick which Ohm variant?

    The dt 770 80ohms are my favourite headphones for metal because of their bass response. The elevated sub bass makes the mix sound full and phat, but they have a nice dip in the mid bass which prevents the bass from sounding bloated and overpowering the guitars in the midrange the way many bass heavy cans do.

      @@squidwardstesticles5914 I’m new to all this and I’m a bit confused about ohms. So is ohms only about volume or is it also something else too?. I don’t listen to music that loud so if it’s only about volume then I should get the lower ohms version right?

    • @squidwardstesticles5914
      @squidwardstesticles5914 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@wyattandrew438 the impedance (measured in ohms) has many effects on a headphone, but the most obvious one is how much power they require, or in other words, the volume. Higher impedance headphones will generally require more power (because impedance is electrical resistance), so these headphones are best when paired with a headphone amp as they won't get loud enough on a phone or something and often won't sound as good. Typical headphones meant for use on anything will be around 32 ohms. For headphones like the dt 770s where multiple impedance options are available, The different versions will often sound different, even if everything else is the same. I haven't personally listened to either the 32 ohm or the 250 ohm dt 770s so I can't really make a solid recommendation, but I can tell you that both the 32 ohm and the 80 ohm will get plenty loud enough on the majority of devices. If you want the dt 770s and don't want to use a headphone amp, do some research about those 2 and see which would be best for you in terms of sound signature.

    • @briancase6180
      @briancase6180 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@wyattandrew438 the impedance goes up because there are many more windings of the wire in the voice coil. This requires more drive voltage for an equivalent response, but we higher voltage it also also creates more response, more accurate drive of the diaphragm. That's why higher impedance can be better. 80 ohm is a good compromise.

    DT 770 Pro are for music recording studios especially for recording vocals so the music from the headphones does not bleed back to the mic. The sub base is really great in those because some of the Studio Speakers are not able to reproduce low low frequencies so they are great for the reference. Never thought of using those for gaming... although it could be great not hearing your wife screaming at you for playing too much :D (they are that good) I guess you can't go wrong with those. I just got mine today. I have been mixing and doing FOH for years. I love the quality and comfort. The only thing that is bugging me right now is the seeming boost in the 3-6k sibilance range. It just seems a little artificial. They don't seem as flat as I was hoping for. I like them a lot, but not sure I would totally trust them for mixing due to the increased sibilant frequency boost. The bass isn't too loud at all, but do have the great low bass extension. I have an old vintage set of AKG K240 "made in Austria" that I always felt were great for flat response. The AKG don't have the good extended bass like the DT770 Pro, but seem more correct for a flat response mixing. I hope I can get comfortable with the 770. I do love the build design and comfort.

    • @briancase6180
      @briancase6180 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, I think that boost is useful. I have realized that some listeners of my music complain about "distortion" when what I think it really is is their system having a response like these headphones. Now I see that if I reduce the response where these headphones overemphasize, I can solve that problem, mostly. 👍

    • @descai10
      @descai10 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just EQ them. Also, the sibilance is actually at 5.5k-7.5k if you look at the frequency response. And then another peak at around 10-11k

    I have the 250 Ohm version of these and truly love them. The review is spot on. My reference point are the Sennheiser HD650s. And while I love the 650s for their tonality they are not exactly exciting headphones. The DT770s however are extremely fun to listen to. They have very fast drivers and the bass feels punchy and on point. So I would also recommend them for Rock. But I also agree with your comment about sibilance: For most tracks you don't notice it but as an example I feel that on some tracks the hi-hats are a little more prominent than they should be.

      @@nimanaderi1237 I would say so. The DT770s are going to sound great especially when you are on distortion. This is where their fast drivers really shine.

    If you're wondering if your phone/ipad will push the 80 ohm version well - they don't. You'll only get medium level volume at best even when your phone is maxed out. I'm using them with a motu m4, so it's not an issue for me personally. If you intend on using them with your phone or computer, I'd definitely get the 32 ohm version.

Although i'm using 250 ohm version :) I've used both. if anyone curious the difference is 80 ohm version has more bass, 250 ohm version has more detailed bass and overall more detailed signature. 80 ohm is a bit more fun imo so there is no right or wrong they both great and similiar.

    I had a DT 770 PRO 80 ohm for almost a year. It was my first venture into higher quality headphone sound/equipment. I drove them with my iPhone paired with an Audioquest Dragonfly Red and a FiiO A5 portable headphone amplifier. I've gone through several different headphones and associated amplifiers/DACs since then but nothing has quite replicated the almost holographic soundstage of that 770 system. To have sound floating outside the ear cups both far left and right but also above and below was stunning!

    For anyone considering to switch from a pair of “gaming” headphones to higher tier headphones like these, make the switch as soon as possible. A couple of months ago, I bought a pair of the Sennheiser HD 598 cs and they work wonders. When I first put them on, the sound was so much different. You can really feel the sound with headphones like these, and not even just with the bass. But with “gaming” headphones, the sound is washed out and watered down. Beyerdynamic, Sennheiser and AKG are really good reputable brands that you should look at. Headphones can be expensive, but it’s completely worth it. Another great video as always.

      The DT 770 definitely doesn't lack bass :) Unless you have the 32-ohm version, which does sound harsher and lighter on the bass than the 80 or the 250 in my experience. I'm thinking maybe the frequencies you're missing when listening to metal are actually not deep bass notes, but rather somewhere in the low-mids? The midrange is quite laid back on the 770s (less so on the 32-ohm version).
