Chaos have that awkward sweet spot of 50% trim and 50% panels. Great vid going through the different approaches. If you ever get the chance to try metallic Sharpies please do. It's what got me through a Heldrake with a shred of sanity left 😅
Neat trick, thinning the contrast as a guide for the unthinned paint. Very good vids, these, for people to actually get things on the table and worry about 'master painting' later. Also Peachy control that gaze, you make me blush when you throw cheeky eyebrow raises like that.
Just realised how much you guys have talked me into so many of my latest model choices without talking to me about model choices. Love it fellas 👌 choas next it is then. Yassssss.
It's a good tutorial because it reminds us that there is no right or wrong way of painting, just matter of preference. I have tried all these methods and I am currently in favour of the last one because I really enjoy using Contrast paints. I have Slaves to Darkness army set in queue but it would look great on World Eaters too.
Reikland flesh and nuln oil upgraded my minis from terrible to medicore. Great video! I love gold so I can't wait to put some of these techniques to use.
I love how I used your Abaddon painting guide years ago, met you in person at Warhammer Fest 2019 and now using this guide to get my troops done 😂 appreciate it, our kid
Hey there! Im really new to painting and just finished my first army. Im looking at getting into CSM next and was curious on the last method if the basecoat of leadbelcher was done by normally painting, spraying, or dry brushing? Thank you!
Wow!!, i I just bought Chaos Space marines combat patrol and legionaries for Kill Team... Great vid.. thank you and congratulation for your amazing tutorials. Greetings from Italy. Roby
The new Slaves to Darkness are superb fun models to paint :) ... been painting the army box and a vanguard patrol over the last few weeks and it has been a blast. I am mostly done with the army now. My method is very similar to the first techique shown here and very happy with the results :) ... For shields I used contrast over a metallic drybrushed undercoat which looks awesome as well!
Really like how these painting tutorials show multiple angles with pro & con and the guard stuff with just some simple head swaps :) Fun watch while painting.
This is great timing since I’m painting Word Bearers for Kill Team soon. What are your thoughts on Pro Acryl paints? I think this is the first time I’ve seen you use them.
Great vid. I think the bottom line is all figures, in GW color schemes, take a LONG TIME to paint, no matter what. It's a question of less long or more long :D But every color scheme, particularly with Chaos, is starkly contrasting to catch the eye. Black v gold, Red v brass, etc. I mean, even space marines, White v red, Yellov red, Blue v white and so on and on. These are great techniques, but I think (excepting things like for Nurgle and Iron Warriors :) ) a painter is just stuck, or picks a monochromatic scheme and says Chaos don't care about shiny trim, why would they?!
These days I choose armies partly based on how quick they are to paint! I know that's lazy but when I tried doing a black legion force it was a painful experience for me when I was trying to be neat.
I painted my guys as The Cleaved just to dodge painting trim.😶🌫️ But I want to do some Word Bearers so bad and looking at the trim on raptors gives me nightmares.😭
Ive just done 1k worth in 4 days, black first then the trim for me. if you do all the gold then black you have to do more coats of black because it doesnt stick to the metallics
The trim is the worst part of playing CSM haha. My preference currently is to prime black, drybrush with the metallic, and then "fill in" the flat parts with paint or contrast/speedpaint or sometimes a mix of the two. The drybrush over black keeps the trim looking worn and aged.
My rule of thumb is to use water to thin the paint or medium to thin the colour. Since Black Legion is not used here for "contrast effect", thinning with water is fine.
Why don't we ever see Chaos Warriors as anything other than black or red, when you mentioned "depending on what chaos God you choose, paint the armor panel" but no one ever seems to rock a Slanesh chaos warrior, just Abbadon and Khorne
I always primed black because a rattle can of krylon black is like 7 dollars and a rattle can of gold is about 15. No thanks. GW golds are over 30 bucks, insanity. Over the course of priming a whole army you could buy another kit instead of buying gw gold spray.
Another tip is to just not paint all the trim. You won't notice it in a squad if not every single bit if trim is done. Just get the key bits like pauldrons and helmet then be selective. Not painting stuff is the fastest way to paint lolz.

Never heard of metallic sharpies. As a beginner painter who starts chaos I'm intrigued. Which brands carry them?
@@clood0814 Sharpie permanent pens are my go-to (eBay or Amazon or local art shops) but today I did see AK do different metallic paint pens now too.
@@clood0814 Also welcome to the hobby! Hope you're enjoying getting into it.
Snakebite leather makes for a lovely aged brass for the contrast trim method, for those wondering. It's what I use on my night lords!
why would anyone be wondering if you dont post any of em?

Hahaha! The power of telly
This is one of the most useful instructional videos I've seen by anyone, ever. Thank you!
Loving these tips. My black legion is looking childish and rough. As I phase out my old sculpts for new these videos are helping loads!
Just built the legionaries kill team and this was just what I needed. Also, loving the metal riffs in the background lol

Awesome! Let us know how you get on 👍
whow last one have a nice reasult i enjoy it ,simple and effective

Snakebite leather contrast over iron hands steel is now my go to gold recipe. 😊
I think that last one would save a lot of time on a 40k thousand sons paintjob with heresy colors, thanks for the inspiration
I’m finishing up a Word Bearers kill team, so this one was right up my alley!

Where was this video when I decided to go with Thousand Sons years ago!? Great stuff, PP team!
Thanks so much for sharing.

Another great painting vid. My favourite of yours, peachy, from GW, is the Abaddon painting guide.

I have just got my first set of legionnaires and I wanted to go black so this has helped massively!
Thankyouu!
You are most welcome 😍👍
Nice clear set of guidelines.... Just ordered a box of legionaries and slightly freaked by the amount of trim!
Really like how these painting tutorials show multiple angles with pro & con and the guard stuff with just some simple head swaps :) Fun watch while painting.
To keep your sanity I can only recommend for whatever colour you do the trim in to use something that only requires one coat of paint.
Just what I needed! Thanks peachy.
😍👍 you’re most welcome
Awesome video! I was thinking how to paint my chaos marines kill team box 😊
The soul price of a beautiful chaos army…the trim.

I’ve used a few here and there in some vids, mostly the white, but tear I like them.
Great video !
Goddamn, the perfect video for me rn
Happy to help!

I love my painting tutorials with some death metal riffs

Anyone got any pictures of the first method on black legion ?
Yoooo... What beautiful gold was that with the one you sprayed in complete gold? I want that paint.
It was golden armour from AK
@@thepaintingphase thanks
What’s that third model?
I'd love to know the difference between medium and water. Peachy seems to prefer water?

Painting chaos is trim is a ballache. *Smash cut to end credits*
That's the short video version 😂

We used AK interactive spray, £5 cheaper!
Colour Forge are great too, pretty much a colour match to GW but cheaper and I think bigger cans too
@@stujm84 Yah I have seen those, they look good. Tough to get anything UK based in the US right now. :/
Death Guard when????
They're on the cards, unsure when.

I jam to metal and paint chaos and orks all the time. Hell yeah
highlights are for noobs
Watching him crappily slap on that gold and black with a way too big / split brush was painful to watch.
Thanks for the wonderful feedback.
I’ve always been partial to the second method.
Im new to this so please forgive my ignorance. Would it not be easier to prime the mini's while they are still on the sprue?
No not really, even though you’ll get great coverage priming them on the sprue, you’ll end up with a spoilt result, when you cut them away - Geoff
