Tell this to my roommate. I bought him a Start Collecting: Tyranids for Chrismas. The box is just sitting on his shelf. He watches plenty of painting videos, but he still hasn't even glued them together.
I asked my dad for painting advice and he said if you want a nice patterned finish use wallpaper. I've been doing this for years now and while my floral themed marines are rather lovely I still struggle to get the paper on the mini smoothly and it does tend to obscure fine details, so hopefully Duncan has some good tips.

This was so incredibly helpful. I'm very bad at miniature painting (though I like it regardless of my lack of talent) and do a lot of these mistakes very frequently. I just never know how and when to fix those mistakes. This video with the visual demonstration is a dream come true for me. Please, please more of this kind of videos.
Collecting and cleaning from paint Warhammer miniatures has become my hobby. Perhaps in the future, twenty years later I will start painting my miniatures.
Honestly, I really needed to see the messy highlight section of this video the most, it's currently what's killing my motivation trying to paint up some primaris space wolves for my buddy, I didnt have time to paint for a while and i left off at edge highlighting, driving myself mad doing a poor job highlighting, might just need to start some other models fresh to get back into the groove. Thanks, Duncan.
I have used a similar, but less aggressive, technique to remove unwanted paint/wash as you demonstrated on the Space Marine. Instead of using paint stripper I use isopropyl alcohol (99%) and an old brush. After a few seconds the most superficial coat of wash re-liquifies and I can just brush it away without removing the base coat. This can also be done with a smaller old brush moistened with IPA for fine detail removal where I just repeatedly brush over the area I want removed. Using less IPA prevent pooling and spread to other acceptable areas. Keep in mind if one is too vigorous you can start to also remove the base coat. I use this method for those times where I look at a model in progress and have a WTF moment wondering how did that get there? Somehow, taking a photo of my mini while painting tends to better highlight the imperfections.
When it comes to highlighting marines I find that sometimes having a rough finish to them actually works, it kind of gives a scuffed highlight that looks just as good. Also my eyes are feeling their age...
I want to thank you for your video on your storage options for painted miniatures. I never thought about using magnetic sheets before, and it has changed my storage for my models!
I always think a skilful painter is one who knows how to fix the mistakes with great skills. You know not everyone has extremely steady hands and microscopic eyesight.

Fixing mistakes or damage can be very satisfying! I'm working on refurbishing a used Forgeworld Mortarion (I am guessing at least third-hand based on how many layers of paint there were when I cleaned him) and he's coming along nicely. Used Simple Green and the built up paint came right off with some gentle scrubbing after a soak. Right now I'm replacing some missing or broken parts by rummaging through the big bag of accumulated bits of things
Duncan: "Don't worry, it happens to the best of us." Also Duncan: "Now let's make some fresh mistakes, because I don't actually have any previous mistakes to fix." 😋
The drybrush issue has happened to me a LOT, no matter how much paint I wiped off it left streaks! So I realised what to do is get a spare model/base and drybrush that first until it stops streaking and THEN do your proper drybrush, works every time now

Just loads pf practice. People have been doing this miniature painting thing for decades. And even ten or fifteen years ago, there was very little online material on the subject, you had to just bang your head against the wall and figure stuff out for yourself by trial and error. With the wealth of tutorials, videos, tips and what have you, people starting out now can very easily kickstart their painting and catch up, tricks and techniques that now seem like no-brainers and are given to you by every content creator in the first five minutes used to take months to figure out by yourself. my wife recently wanted to try out painting, gave her a miniature, explained how basic highlighting works and her very first dude turned out like my hundredth because she could instantly use what I had to learn across several years. This is really the best time to get into miniatures, the amount of support and instruction you have at your fingertips instantly is unprecedented in the history of the hobby.

Stripping minis - it requires a bit of investment, but an ultrasonic cleaner is great, no scrubbing with a brush required. They're also useful for cleaning airbrushes

Hey Duncan! I'm the guy who met you at the tram station in Cracow some time ago. I forgot to tell you how much I appreciate your work back then. Keep up the good work and ping me if you happen to visit Cracow again :)
yep - been there, done that :) Glad to see all these mistakes are common . Also it's fine to make a mistake, you learn that way, what works and what doesn't.
Your videos are so insanely helpful! A lot of these are tips that I just haven't found from other tutorials and are definitely mistakes that I, as a newbie, make a lot of. Keep up the good work!
That AK Interactive paint stripper is amazing. I left my model in a bowl of the stripper for about a half an hour (I got sidetracked with some other stuff and forgot about it). When I took the model out, the paint mostly sloughed off all on its own without me having do some much scrubbing with a brush at all. The stuff is downright amazing.
Ahhh it's so great knowing you've gone through and found the same ways to fix! One problem I still have is just terrible choices for tones/highlights sometimes, especially moving away from citadel paints.
This guy is out here telling a bunch of lonely wargamers to run out there and start dipping their "miniatures" in "strippers". Ya'll gonna end up with a lot of itchy "miniatures", I'll tell you that much is for sure =P. On a serious note, I'm looking to get involved in painting these guys and I'm terrible at any form of painting so these videos are a great help. Thank you so much for them and keep them coming!
Instead of personally attacked: treat it as created personally to support your betterment. An amazing thing happens when you seek criticism for self betterment. Ego is an obstacle to improvement, and being wrong means you can instantly get 10 to 20% better at something by knowing what's right.
Duncan, your videos inspired me to get back in to painting 40K and it's been a hoot! Got a Knight and a pair of Armigers painted up that I'm really pleased with.
You can also work mistakes into your pieces, like the dry brushing, you can make it look like the armour has scraped against something if you add a few darker lines in
It is a relief to see that the mistakes I keep making are common enough to all be featured in this video lol
What a pleasant suprise to find you here in the comments. Keep up the good work, you are a blessing to the gaming community! :)

One of your best videos. Thanks Duncan!!
Hey Duncan! I'm the guy who met you at the tram station in Cracow some time ago. I forgot to tell you how much I appreciate your work back then. Keep up the good work and ping me if you happen to visit Cracow again :)
Hahaha. Yes, I remember that well and me and my girlfriend still talk about it. Thank you for the kind words 😊
yep - been there, done that :) Glad to see all these mistakes are common .
Ok I'm not going to read the comments but I'm sure someone has already said it but you're the Bob Ross of miniatures.
YEEES. Lovely stuff. We are all human, just need to roll with the stumbles.
Love that... 'Roll with the stumbles' Nice.
Solved the wash issue by dropping washes and using coats of lighter paint + contrast paints thinned down with medium. Perfect for that grimdark style.
Great tip!
Man your videos are like little rays of sunshine. Stay awesome
That thumbnail reminds me of my first miniature I painted (still new to the painting part of the hobby), and I feel personally attacked...
...so did Brother Cataract when he decided to take a peek into the warp.
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA well fucking played sir...
That sounds fantastic @Glory. We are glad we could help you a little on your hobby journey 😊
The lense one is class. So obvious but I never thought about it
Two things:
1: I make a lot of common mistakes
2: This is the most useful technique video I've seen
The eye painting tip was useful . Painting eyes scares the hell out of me but at least it easy to fix now. Nice video thanks.
You can also work mistakes into your pieces, like the dry brushing, you can make it look like the armour has scraped against something if you add a few darker lines in
People getting excited for the first Falcon and winter soldier episode, meanwhile we getting happy to see a new Duncan masterpiece!
