  • I set out to replace the brake discs on my 1990 Citroen C25 (Talbot Express) Elddis Autoquest 270 motorhome. Along the way I find more problems that will require additional work to fix.

    I'm not qualified to offer advice with regard to vehicle maintenance (I gave it up many years ago when I realised how inept I was whilst attempting to service the TR4 I owned at that time) I can however tell you I enjoy watching your channel, and always look forward to seeing your latest vlog.
    With luck, the new parts will arrive sooner rather than later.

    at 13:25 a wire brush attached to a drill would work wonders on the part where the pads contact. Just for future reference. Nice video though.

    Tip, Copper grease an essential workshop consumable for all car rebuild jobs. Makes you car Work easier next time. ( but use sparingly ) and not near breaking surfaces. Only rear of pads. Looks like inherited that stuck cylinder.

    I wouldn't bother with the run out gauge; you've replaced the discs so should be good and true. You will feel distorted discs as a pulsing through the brake pedal when you press it anyway. When you overhaul the calipers it can be tricky to get the old piston out. Recommendations are to use compressed air but if you don't have a compressor like me, one of those JoeBlow stirrup type bicycle tyre pumps will do the trick. Use the beachball inflator nozzle (the fat one, not the needle obvs) pushed into the hole where the brake line connects, not forgetting to keep the bleed nipple done up nice and tight. You can hold the nozzle in by hand. Use a bit of rag to catch and protect the piston when it pops out. Also if you're game, wire brush (drill ones are best) all the rust off and give it a nice lick of paint too.

    • @ttxela
      @ttxela  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got a run out gauge on order, it might come in useful for other stuff no doubt. The repair kit I've ordered looks to come with new pistons. Just hoping the bore in the caliper isn't damaged 🤔

  • @charlietango1635
    @charlietango1635 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you damage your near side mirror against the wall when you jacked up the front wheel? only it looked quite close to me. Could you not have had them skimmed? or were they, or would they have been too thin? High melting point grease should be OK but not too much, I did have a piston that would not budge, so I pulled it out, and cleaned up the front edge to get rid of the crudge and build up of rust with fine wet &dry, clean out the piston bore while you have it out, then replace piston using that red rubber grease to protect the rubber seal, it should work fine then, please let me know if you go down that route.

    • @ttxela
      @ttxela  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it didn't touch the brickwork, it's actually not that close, I think the camera angle makes it look worse than it is 🙂

  • @DesmondsDonders
    @DesmondsDonders 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I think whatwe have learned from Part 1 is to always make sure your rubber is fitted properly and that your piston is free to move.

    • @ttxela
      @ttxela  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed, along with the danger of rusting up if left unused for too long 🤣

    Hi Alex. No Mr Safety Owl. I am not a mechanic either. Great job on the brakes. You may need to buy a new caliper as those darn pistons can be a nightmare to unseize. I have had the same problems on a Fiat car I owned many many years ago. I tried heat and eventually drilled piston so I could use a puller. That meant piston knackered and not available to purchase. Bore so badly pitted it wasnt usable. The bore was plated lined and had worn away with use exposing the metal which then rusted. Not sure if this comment helps or makes it worse for u. Hope it all goes well. Cheers from old George

    • @ttxela
      @ttxela  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mr Safety Owl is currently on sick leave suffering from stress he claims was brought on by below standard work site accommodation (overhead locker). I've just had a rather confrontational letter from his union!
      I'm expecting removing the piston to be a bit of a game but it does rotate when gripped with water pump pliers so may not be too bad. The rebuild kits I've ordered look like they come with new pistons so fingers crossed........

    • @ttxela

      I think what kills the discs is standing long periods so they get rusty enough for pitting to occur.
