Ok,Capt bobs..this trip is on my bucket list.To me this is fishermans paradise! As an ny surf fisherman ,to catch fish like that is a dream."BUCKET LIST"
Great video. You really documented this. Even the drive. Nice fish. Just got back from a week of fishing there. We got 150 lbs of fish total. Great trip..
Thank you @Deckhand Cody. The whole crew and everyone fishing were very cool, and it was a great day out there! The weatherman was totally wrong about the forecast and the weather ended up being pleasant.
Fished out of homer a couple years ago and did well out near the Ushagat and Amatuli islands. Our biggest was only 115lbs. But wanted to also catch lingcod but was told the fish were not around or fishing for them was not good for awhile. Well next trip coming up and will need to find another place for some good Alaska fishing! Homer is such a beautiful place!
When we were using the gear to catch Rockfish, I hooked a Lingcod but he escaped as soon as I got him to the surface and let slack get in the line. We were also hooking some small Salmon. In the previous trip a month earlier some of the anglers hooked Redeye as well. The main target was Halibut of course but the waters have much more than just Halibut. It really was beautiful out there, the day started rainy but turned into a sunny day by the end. The islands we were between looked like they were Hawaiian with the sun on them.
We freezed the fish after putting the filets in seal-a-meal plastic, and then put those in freezer boxes that are shippable. We checked those in, on our flight back home
We're spoiled now, eating Halibut every other night and the freezer is still full! But you can't have your Halibut and Eat it Too. 243lbs would be a monster!
@@creativelivingnorthwest yup I would of let her go but she was hooked deep. The best eaters are the 40 to 80 lb fish by far. You can prepare it is so many different ways..
@@mdv2043 That is true, the 50 pounder that I caught and the 50 pounder that my dad caught one month earlier (different video) taste excellent. Grilled Halibut... Pan Fried Halibut... Halibut Fish-n-chips... Sounds like Forest and Bubba talking about Shrimp...
@@creativelivingnorthwest fired coconut halibut with mango sauce, halibut parmesan, smoked. Grilled, fried in panko bread crumbs I really like to stuff a fillet with cornbread stuffing with shrinp, crawfish and scallops and grill them. I just made myself hungry.
Thank you, it was a lot of fun for my dad and I to experience these trips as well. We are not sure on the cost, we were gifted these trips as payment for our work that we were doing in helping our friend build their garage in Kenai. Each fish is given to the person that caught them.
The small ones are Rock Fish. We put our catch in freezer boxes that can be bought in any store in that area. They are Styrofoam with a cardboard outside. Our haul was under 50lbs so we didn't have to pay for freight bringing it on our flight back. There are other options to process and fly it back wherever you need to
Nice video, but I don't understand why you kill and keep these large halibut. Given the consrvation issues why keep any halibut over about 75lb? I have caught many many halibut in Icy strait and I release large fish. They are often females and ofen full of worms and the fillets are too big...............
Are these giants really in abundance like this out there .. here in ny a 10 lb fluke is a considered a door mat but I really don’t know if I’d want to kill it cuz there the ones that reproduce in big numbers with good genetics I say this cuz I feel like it would be the same for 100+ lb halibut
There have been so many Halibut taken from the water out by Homer AK... there is a reason it's considered the Halibut Capitol of the World. We were hooking one at a time... there are vessels out there that do "Long Lining". They bring up Hundreds of Halibut at a time. They just keep coming!
Fished out of Homer in 97, got into a school of young ones, most were 25-35 lb range, and we just popping them off, looking for a larger, lucky catch. People wonder about shooting them also; well, that beast took a 45 to the head, and was still flopping; can you imagine one with energy to snap your legs/ankles? It's fun to watch others "JUMP" at the gun-fire.
I think over all the video was great 👍but there were a few dislikes " THAT DRIVE in the beginning, and to top it off at the end " and your video guy needs some help.
Glad you like it. And the video guy was myself. Yeah, I do need some help. It is hard to be the videographer and to be in the action at the same time. It is a balance of capturing the moment without viewing the trip through a screen the whole time. Wish I had some kind of film crew but that just isn't in our budget
That might make the pistol last longer, require cleaning less often. Otherwise it was safe there, there wasn't any chance of Mutiny on this boat; we were all friends.
Those guys are the worst at using gaf hooks. They both hooked the body when the head was such a big target. Then the whole gun thing is beyond dangerous.
It took both of them to lift the monsters in. The Captain explained to me that he dispatches the big Halibut with the pistol before they come onto the boat; that way they do not thrash around and damage the boat, equipment, or hurt the people on the boat. You want to come back to port alive and uninjured; this ensures that.
That's the way life goes isn't it? Always the best man and never the groom... I suppose I should strap a camera to my head next time... would make things a lot easier, but would have a lot more video to sort through afterwards. Anyway I had fun on the trip, and was able to record the other fishermen reeling up their catch. I got to live it. This is just the video that you all get to see...
Hi Marc. It was a beautiful drive, and not one that we get to see very often. If you would like to see the fishing instead, go ahead and Fast Forward to the Fishing! Cheers!
It's a Free Country, you can do as you please. There is also a feature on TH-cam that lets you skip forward or backwards to the part you actually want to see. Yeah its not all action-packed like Wicked Tuna or Deadliest Catch... I wanted to document the whole trip, as this is something we don't get to do or see often.
