- Hi, guys! In this episode, we are hauling our halibut sets for the day. The sets start out slow, catching a lot of sharks but later on, our patience pays off.

Love watching you guys work. I visited my brother when he was stationed in Anchorage, was supposed to stay for a week. I ended up staying for 2 months, until my sister in law finally kicked me out!

Catching fish is great, catching big beautiful fish is a whole different feeling. You can tell by the smiles on their faces 👍👍!

As I watched this video I kept having one thought. “Work Ethics”! If only our younger generation had what you two guys have. I never tire watching you work. Dad, I know you are proud of your son and partner Matt. Matt I know you enjoy working with your dad. You are two lucky guys and I am lucky to be able to tag along with you even if it is on my iPad. Tight lines.
Philip,This family have learnd to work or starve. Todays generations think its easier to give em what they want and get them to go away but that teaches our kids nothing. They havent learnd to say "NO" when the kids wine that they need this or that. I was not given anything I worked for what I have and am damned proud of it.We in the USA have become lazy and sent our companies to China and now China is becoming a powerful and rich country , While or great manufacturing city are in ruins, and this needs to stop or we will go down the tub. Sorry I got on the rage wagon but I worries me so much what our country is coming to.

@@EISAlaska my lobster boat wasn't huge, was a 35' Penbay with a 3 foot trap rack on the stern. Loved that boat and it fished well.

I feel your pain with the spiny dogfish. I used to fish commercial deep water rockfish in California and we occasionally get invaded by those as well!

I would love to hear an explanation on the difference between slush packing fish and just using ice. Especially when and why you use each method. Love watching you guys fish a mind fix up the new boat
Slush ice is just adding seawater to the ice to create a slurry. It helps chill the fish faster and mo evenly than ice alone. It also prevents crushing on the bottom layer as it floats the fish and they arn't packed as tight.
@@EISAlaska good info. Would it be bad to gut and clean a fish before putting them into slush ice or should you minimize contact with the meat and water?
Those halibut are huge!
They started eating the dog fish in Massachusetts.. actually delicious! Ive thrown a million back. They had to try something , they multiplied cause of so much by-catch..you should look into it, turn a bad day into a good one.all around!

Just can't seem to find halibut in fish shops these days, which is great shame, but i used to like 'flooks' when i netted them from the boat in Poole harbour ( used a 1 fathom drop trammel net ) which i set on high water, then went off on the falling tide to pick cockles. Those were good days.
You guys are great longliners and make some quality catches. Tight lines and smooth seas.

Why no market for dogs? It is English original fish n chips. Soak in milk after skinning neutralize uratic acid. Deep fry tastes just like tom cod. Thats what they serve in England original fish n chips.Try a different buyer or ask around. Gotta be a market .Just throwing them back will make more of them. Duh! Ha Ha Good Luck Chuck!

Watching you two is like watching a well oiled machine, keep the vids coming and I love the way you check the halibut to make sure they are legal. Question: what is the legal size/length for a person fishing off a boat with a rod and line 👍
Nice haul after all those sharks I take it your quota goes by dressed weight. It's easier estimating weight by length on the halibut than other fish using the chart. Rounder fish are harder due to girth being so different between fish
The IFQ balance goes by head off gutted. This year the fish seemed to be running heavier than the chart showed, they did seem to be pretty healthy looking fish.
nice! i wish the halibut were like that here in wa state. currently me and brother fish in the straits of juan de fuca . but over the last couple seasons the halibut were just not here . hopefully its just a cycle and they come in the straits this next year. good work as always fellas!
We've had that before, good areas some seasons will be deserts the next. Gotta wonder where the fish go in that time. Good fishing to you!
@@EISAlaska yea, well we start our season around march, but the fish seem to be coming in late, like around end of march into mid April the past few seasons. halibut are definitely hard to figure out! but up there in Alaska that's like their breeding grounds isn't it?

Nice teamwork. Its like the sharks are your 5 second "break" between halibut! Is there a shark season up there? I know that they LOVE smoked dogfish in certain parts of the world.

Matt I love you all, but you and your dad are unbeatable. I have seldom seen a young man so responsible taking care of the boat that supports you all. You are fastidious and my wife and I both smile as we watch you care for her. Here is some rare advice Matt, I seldom give it. Never let a woman know just how adaptive you are in a kitchen...ever! Make them think you are a total disaster or your life will be very ....... Different.
I do laundry, cook and do dishes, don't let it happen! Ahhhh who am I kidding! If course it will happen one day, maybe fifty years from now? 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Can't believe there's not a market for all those sharks you catch.... there's not a fish & chip shop in Australia that doesn't sell it..

The only real way to deal with the dogfish problem is to have a domestic market for them then they will be harvested

That looks like a Dexter Russel knife. What model is that as I'm sure the profile has changed a bit due to use and sharpening. Great knives and hold an edge very well. Just wish they offered them with a sheath. It looks like the Fish Splitter but I only see that in 12" which yours appears shorter

Nah, we prefer cod. The meat looks like it would be pretty tasty though.

Well at least they weren't sleeper sharks..but not much you can do when a large group of sand sharks passes thru .
That's for sure! The sleepers are the worst. Hard to handle when they get rolled up in the gear.

How about dropping down with the jigging equiptment baited up in new areas before putting out the long lines to detect shark-infested bottom water?
It'd be pretty tough to gauge that way, since the fishing can change at any moment, one second you're in trash the next you're hauling on lunkers. That's where laying longline really shines, it covers a large area of bottom and depth range.
@@EISAlaska That makes sense because you have the gear down there a long time after the sampling time. But you might want to give it a try when the sand shark density is so grim. And I guess that because you have a smallish quota for the under 35" boat class halibut permit you can afford some bad sets because you are probably going to hit that quota regardless.
It was cool that you got the lunker halibut on the high spot. I enjoyed that strategy for sure.
Also I learned that "sand fleas" are Amphicods (sand crablike Crustaceans). It's tough to have to deal with these issues (sand sharks and amphicods). You guys work hard for what you get.
Seems it was worth a few dogs.

Is there time after the gear is in the water to drift bait on your fishing lines. It might be interesting to see what you could do drifting a hot spot and fighting some of those giants in
Not much time to do anything this late in the season, we had about an hour or so to chill and grab a bite before we started hauling.

Bycatch needs to returned to the sea with a minimum of damage and harm. They annoy us, but they are also part of the environment and deserve the same respect as other creatures.
