the refurbished phones comes with new batteries and a screen if there are any visible markings. the housing however does not get replaced understandably
Trade in!!!! They get it, fix it up and resell it!!! Turn it in for recycling via apple store directly or requesting a package that can be mailed to you. While you may or may not get something for it, it at least keeps it out of the trash and is recycled properly.

However, because Apple no longer provides updates four years after purchase, but the apps all require an update, a fully functional iPhone has become completely useless. And that's just so you can buy a new, overpriced iPhone. This is not sustainable, environmentally friendly or economical! So no, I don't think that Apple dose a lot for the environment.
