I run Armscor through mine and it's flawless. I use mine as my carry gun I don't care what anyone says when it comes down to the wire it's about bullet placement and if you get shot in the lungs, heart, liver, or head your going down. Plus if something real bad happens I got 60 rounds on me and can barley even tell it's like 2 lbs.
I was raised on 22's - shorts, LR's and my personal favorite the mag- and IF you can shoot and the weapon is accurate a mag is a killer- even a damn bear...
Amen Brother! That 22mag is 'mo better' than most people will publicly state. Mine has been almost perfect, maybe 2-3 feed problems with a thousand rounds shot. Accuracy is great and I have a mini laser on the rail for low light/night shooting. I absolutely love mine....even though when I purchased about 5 years ago, I had to spend some money.
Yes when it comes down to the wire it's about bullet placement, how many ppl can hit a target under stress far less put a bullet in a specific area, I have seen ppl shot with 9mm and keep coming far less with a .22 the only thing that .22 is good for is teaching ppl how to shoot..i.e. confidence building, hold and trigger control and how to apply the marksmanship rules....
After watching MANY videos and reading many reviews I purchased my PMR30 and the Mcarbo upgrade kit . I installed the kit parts especially the stainless steel feed ramp. I’ve got a Viper red dot mounted on it. I have never had a failure to feed or eject. CCI that Kel-tec recommended works flawlessly. It is accurate, light , easy to handle and I’m more than happy with it. I carry 3 extra mags and if that’s not enough to get the job done I screwed up!!
If people would just read the damn manual and use the suggested ammo and grain they would have no issues with this gun. The manual says use CCI maxi mag 40 gr. If you use lower grain you may have issues.
Put around 400 rounds through my son's gun after we replaced the original feed ramp with a stainless one using CCI 40gr hollow points. Zero feed issues!
The speed of the bullet is important. E=MC2 (squared). Energy = Mass (of the bullet) x Celerity (speed of the bullet) SQUARED. Consider 4 squared = 16 so when you square a number, you get 4 times the number (16 is 4 times larger than 4 as an example). So the celerity (Speed) is 4 TIMES more important to deliver the highest amount of energy. The CCI Maxi Mag delivers an amazing 571.5 meters per second. So the Energy of this gun is amazing - if the grain/mass is constant, then the speed of the bullet matters 4 times more than the mass. This is one heck of a speedy bullet to deliver amazing amounts of Energy (easy to calculate - Math 101 right?). So for anyone that claims that the 22 WMR is not potent, they should redo the math and understand that the speed of the bullet matters 4 times more than the Mass of the bullet to deliver the highest amount of energy. This also helps in the consistency of target shooting as the statistical deviation is now reduced to a minimum. Not trying at all to knock off other bullets, but the Five Seven by FN and the 22 WMR can be very powerful with virtually no recoil. So placement now improves significantly. When you add the weight of this gun is minimal, even with 30 rounds, you have one heck of a great Semi that delivers incredible energy. Do the math and smile.
LOL! The Hollywood gun! I like it. I don't know how many movies I watch and being a gun guy, I count the number of rounds fired out of a gun. Sometimes I think "Wow, what kind of gun is that? It just fired 27 times without a reload!"
Good show. I noticed that the Hornady rounds DID NOT have a huge ball of fire coming out of the muzzel. That would be a great advantage in shooting at night. Especially in a defensive situation.
Do you think maybe the polymer tips on the Hornady bullets slide more smoothly w/o binding on the plastic feed ramp? The copper plated bullets on the cci may create more friction against the polymer feed ramp and cause just enough of a slowdown or binding to cause a misfeed or even a stovepipe. Just guessing...
Mine had some malfunctions so I sent it back to Keltec. They replaced a number of parts. I didn’t do extensive testing because of the ammo shortage, but I ran one magazine with 15 rounds of CCI Maxi-Mag 40 gr Jacketed Hollow Point and 15 rounds of CCI Maxi-Mag 40 gr Total Metal Jacket, and another magazine with 30 rounds of Federal Premium 50 gr Hollow Point. All performed flawlessly.
3 in 1 oil is a game changer for these pistols....just try and it and see....I have never had failure to fire or eject while using it!....and I have ran nothing buy CCi 40 grain ammo in them....maybe its just been dumb luck, but if its working dont fix it!
Got one of these and is the latest version. If I load 30 rounds in the mag it will jam if I load no more than 25 it runs fine. Called Keltec and sent back one mag and they sent the same one back and it was a little better but still 25 was the safe limit. It's acurate, light as a feather and loud. The grip is real big and this should be re designed to be a 20 or 22 rd gun with a smaller grip and this would be the cats ass. Over all I like it as long as I don't put more than 25 rds in the mags.
I use 25 in mine too. I seem to dent the lower round if I try to put in 30. Mine shoots low and to left on the range and according to the bore sighter. I'm debating on returning it to have them look it over. I put a Crimson Trace laser on it and it is lined up with the bore sighter and shoots accurate that way.
M-Carbo makes a couple of retrofit parts that virtually eliminate all chambering jams and missed ejections. They make a stainless steel feed ramp, a replacement magazine release to lift the magazines a few thousandths higher for better alignment and also a new slide spring for better ejection. This vastly increases the amount of ammo types you can choose from.
Great Video. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Kel-Tec does not recommend anything less than 40 gr out of this little Gem. Less resistance in barrel pressure for proper function. Love this little pistol. How is the accuracy? Thanks
I don't know but that was my conclusion as well, heavier bullet is what it needs. The trigger is amazing, sights are awesome and very accurate in my opinion
It definitely doesnt like under 40 grains, I found out the hard way when mine blew apart. It was my fault for using the wrong ammo. Cci 36 grain it had an out of battery discharge and blew the slide apart. I now have the cmr30 carbine and its nasty with the hornady critical defense.
Is no fair for cci ammo because the HORNADY is 45g and CCI is 30g Don't put anything under 40g CCI 40g or 45g the more hot the better she's shoot I shoot mines with cci 40g and 45g no problems ever
Great review. Gotta love Hornady. I've always had a desire to get a PMR one of these days. I really like the idea of the 30 round mags and low recoil. More shots on target. Have Fun Be Safe :)
I own the PMR30 and CMR30 and they are good guns and I use CCI and Hornady with no problems. But the ammo is hard to get and can cost as much to shoot as an FF fiveseven. They are similar. With the Kel-tec being a very good cheaper alternative. The 5.7 ammo is center fire and has a higher fps but the .22WMR is pretty close. But it also depends on the brand of ammo, I only use CCI And Hornady
Good video, thanks for sharing.. little correction ( I thought 1700fps, hornady 45 gr FTX as well) but it’s out of a rifle ..it’s 1000 FPS out of a pistol.. trivial? Maybe.. but it runs pretty good in my PMR30.. but I had to put 90 bucks in a upgrade kit from Mcarbo to make it run more reliable..
With my PMR30 the only issue was within the first 50 rounds. Not a single malfunction since that time. To date I have used Armscor for the first 100 rds and Winchester the rest of the time. Never anything under 40gr. Anyone that I have allowed to shoot this gun gets a grin on their face within the first 5-10rds. Super accurate!
Just a thought, Kel Tec recommends CCI Maxi-Mag 22 WMR HP 40 grain. They discuss the problems of using a 30 grain like you experienced with your test VS the Hornady 45 grain.
Just got one about 6mo ago. Have no trouble with the armscor 40gr. Not a single issue so far with Hornady , CCI, fiocchi, winchester varmint and a couple others. Have 4 mags, I loaded to 25 for awhile when all new, try to let it break in a little without to much pressure. I use the mag Lula loader and tap as I go. It’s so light and such a nice trigger , I really like it fro a hunting sidearm.
It's my carry gun. I wear a belly pac up on my right side. There's a lot zippers so I put a zip tie thru the one that accesses my KelTec. If I ever need it, I can get it out in a few seconds. I use the Hornady 45 gr with no problems.
I wonder, how many rounds had been run through your PMR-30 before the test? I know many semi-autos have a break-in period ie. 100/200 rnds. before they come to their true reliability. Also, did you clean the pistol before each ammo test? Thanks for taking the time.
i think the heavier grain of that hornady stuff makes the gun more reliable / also heavier CCI rounds will cycle better as well these guns tend to not run hollow points or anything under 40 grains very well
yep I,m a cci guy but got to give it to the Hornady . that thing was throwing the empties a long way's ...thanks I want one of those pistols but have been waiting for vid's like this because of the manufactures reputation ...
The PMR-30 with the CCI A22 35 grain ammo work great for me. Great penetration and expansion in wet newspaper. I have the extended barrel with flash supperesor as well.
Stuff is expensive is an understatement, hell you can't even find it. I haven't any shot my PMR 30 yet because I only 400rd or so. I do not like to shot any of my guns unless I have at least a 1000+ RDS on hand. but all in all great review I enjoyed the video.
just got one today in Bronze from point blank, Hodgkins IL, and a couple hundred rounds of CCI and Hornady which was actually cheaper. look forward to shooting it.
Hornady Critical Defense ammo in all Calibers is made for low muzzle flash, to keep your night eyes in that unfortunate time for someone else. Also if you are using night optics .
I finally broke a fireing pin thre other day,I've had mine several years now and have tried pretty much everything and still have feed issues,I see where KelTec is taking them in and redoes everything I see MCarbo has a rebuilding for like $350 I believe,,,,it's a shame you have to go through that with a new firearm,,, trying to keep it G rated 😠 😡 😤
Mine does nothing but jam with CCI and remmington..The cartridge is held up on the extractor while a new round is trying to rack. I had maybe 1 hangup with hornady. I also have installed the pro budlndle, so far I'm disappointed in reliability. Maybe gonna take several hundred more rounds.
that hornady ammo is made to function in handguns, i mean to have good ballistics from shorter barrels. it has a powder that burns a bit faster than most 22wmr ammo.
Have you put those Hornady's down a cronograph? Been trying to locate a video of someone who has. They seem like really hot rounds. My wife and I both can tell a difference when firing them out of her carry.
CCI ammo you are using has bullets under the recommended 40 grains and if you watch the video you can see it is effecting the ejection. However the heavier hornady ammo make it throw spent cases like an Olympian. Use 40 grain and higher ammo and the reliability will go way up.
I don’t recommend dry firing it after the last round as shown in the video. This gun has a very fragile firing pin. I’m on my second with less than 1000 rounds fired and it’s a MOTHER to change. Now, when I’m done shooting my PRM 30, I make sure that a snap-cap is the last thing to enter the chamber.
I run Hornady self defense for short barrel hand guns and it is almost flawless, I had one no feed out of 200rds,probably my bad for not tapping on the mag while loading.
You'll find that heavier grain bullets, of any brand, will run smoother through these guns. At least for the first 1000 rounds as it is getting good and worn in. My theory is with more bullet to push out you get a stronger recoil, ejection, and rechamber.
I have had many .22 semi auto pistols, none of them want to shoot hollow points, I get failure to feed issues just like he just did often, save your hollow points for your revolver!
I have a PMR 30 and was told you had to use CCI but I used Armscor with no problem. I'm going to get some Hornady 2200 FPS ammo for defense. I don't know if you have a fluted barrel or not, but the early PMR30's with the fluted barrel had a lot of chambering problems and Keltec will give you a new barrel for free if you have a fluted one.
that's sound great am watching some videos about the kel-tec 22magnun and this is the intonation what i was looking for i will get a kel-tec 22magnun difinally i like the gun just i was having disappointing information but now i have the right ammunition for the kel-tec 22magnun i like your videos you're the one whom got the right information to us
Mine was jamming junk from the start, and the front site keep falling out!!! KEL TEC has had it going on 2 months and said that it is defective and they can not find a way to fix it yet!!!
Good to know about the right stuff ammo.. strange watching the brass fly out some of it really sails out and some looks droopy, always wonder about that.
i believe it has two types of ejectors, i could be wrong. one is internal and the other is the hook that slips over the rim of the cartridge when charged
I run Armscor through mine and it's flawless. Placement for sure!!! Until it doesn't fir. I love mine but not trustworthy
Exactly idc what gun you have you will allways need bullet placement unless it's a 50bmg
Loading the magazine is the most important. No issues with critical defense

Federal Game Shok 50 grain rounds work excellent in the PMR30.

Just how trustworthy is the rim fire nowadays I used a pump rifle and never had a misfire with the 22 mag. this was back in the 1950's.

My friend and I both did the Macarbo rebuild and we haven’t had any issues with any type of ammunition
Mine is stock, and runs good without the upgrades

PSA ran a sale on these $329 ...finally got to add it to my kt collection ...murica!!
I been using federal 50 grain and it’s been great. A very unique yet fun gun.
Armscore is also a good ammo for the PMR-30

40 Gr. is what they recommend, nothing lighter.
"Stays in the safe". If I had lived by that philosophy in the Army I never would have drawn my M16A1 or A2 from the arms room. lol
I've had the same issue with the CCI round it averages 3 to 5 malfunctions per mag for me in my PMR30.
Only 30 grains, they recommend at least 40 grain CCI
Kel Tec wants you to run a 40 grain round that could be the problem
Love Kel Tec's
I’ve run 1,000 rounds through mine with zero malfunctions. Good enough for me.
What kind of ammo do you use??

Hornady for the win. Looked like it must have been a little hotter most of them where really ejecting hard.

I wonder how the 50 grain Federal JHP would run in this gun...
Eventually I will try all the ammo for this pistol, it's hard to come by at a decent price
Not sure why but the CCI ammo had some muzzle blast fire but not every round and the Hornady didn't show any in the video ?
Bigger bullet, less powder not burning out the barrel
Wow those ammo prices are like today's ammo after the shortage!
KelTec recommends 40 gr. minimum

Expensive... where are you buying your CCI from? I'm getting it for the same price as my 9mm, $0.17/round from TSUSA.
I got one slightly used for $299 - Tax and ran 100 rounds 40gr. CCI NO PROBLEM. Now I want a CMR 30
just got one today in Bronze from point blank, Hodgkins IL, and a couple hundred rounds of CCI and Hornady which was actually cheaper. look forward to shooting it.

that hornady ammo is made to function in handguns, i mean to have good ballistics from shorter barrels. it has a powder that burns a bit faster than most 22wmr ammo.

I just got one a few weeks ago. Armscor runs fine but it's a dirty round. CCI runs great.
Did you clean the gun between shooting the CCI and the Hornady?
I run Hornady self defense for short barrel hand guns and it is almost flawless, I had one no feed out of 200rds,probably my bad for not tapping on the mag while loading.
Am I seeing a price tag for $26.95 on those CCI's? Holy shit, are they made of platinum or gold?

the spent hornady brass seems to come out ejected with more UMPH than the CCI.
I said Hornady, I meant Speer Gold Dot
You'll find that heavier grain bullets, of any brand, will run smoother through these guns. At least for the first 1000 rounds as it is getting good and worn in. My theory is with more bullet to push out you get a stronger recoil, ejection, and rechamber.
Those CCI's were only 66% of the mass of the Hornadys.
They have the critical defense at my local shop going to have to grab some for my CMR30
Its the best I've found so far.
Mine likes Federal 50 grain hollow point Game Shoks.
Update - After owning it 10 weeks the firing pin broke.
@@Skfoster64 they have a revised firing pin now...did you dry fire a lot
No. I’ve now replaced the firing pin twice.
@@Skfoster64 really? How many rds before breakage?
I have a Ruger Mark iv target Stainless . It is very ammo sensitive unfortunately . CCI MIN MAGS work the best in it .
i run american quality 40 GR JHP,not a problem
Remington seems to be the most reliable in my PMR30 but it's also the most difficult to find.
Ejection is all over the place with the Hornady
I have had many .22 semi auto pistols, none of them want to shoot hollow points, I get failure to feed issues just like he just did often, save your hollow points for your revolver!
Well the 22 magnum is a much more reliable round than 22lr or short
Good to know!
Sweet gun just ordered one
I have a PMR 30 and was told you had to use CCI but I used Armscor with no problem. I'm going to get some Hornady 2200 FPS ammo for defense. I don't know if you have a fluted barrel or not, but the early PMR30's with the fluted barrel had a lot of chambering problems and Keltec will give you a new barrel for free if you have a fluted one.
Jim Jakosh
Hornady CD chronos at 1370fps from my pmr at 6' from muzzle. 2200fps maybe in a 20" barrel.
shannon shull Exactly. They put those numbers out but never say how they came up with them.
that's sound great am watching some videos about the kel-tec 22magnun and this is the intonation what i was looking for i will get a kel-tec 22magnun difinally i like the gun just i was having disappointing information but now i have the right ammunition for the kel-tec 22magnun i like your videos you're the one whom got the right information to us
The CCI will run, but you can't load it to more than 27-28, and you need to slap the mag about every 10 rnds. Hornady CD is the money shot though.
Mine was jamming junk from the start, and the front site keep falling out!!! KEL TEC has had it going on 2 months and said that it is defective and they can not find a way to fix it yet!!!
Try CCI 40 grn my PMR and CMR runs great in both no problems.
That hornady make em move like a baby 3.80
Good to know about the right stuff ammo.. strange watching the brass fly out some of it really sails out and some looks droopy, always wonder about that.
Heavier bullet, more time in the barrel, more blowback, more powder burned, see no flame out of the end of the barrel. End of story! LOL
i believe it has two types of ejectors, i could be wrong. one is internal and the other is the hook that slips over the rim of the cartridge when charged
I had a hot.shell casing go down the back of my shirt. Odd looks from other guys at the range while I was jumping around.
How much is expensive 4 years ago? I’m finding them 41 cents a bullet during shortage end of 2020.. in bulk..
No cool muzzle flash with the Hornady ammo.It must have a faster burning powder which increases velocity and bingo.Winner, winner chicken dinner.
I had a lot of misfires w cci yesterday I’m going to try something different
I hope to God u didn't pay almost $27 plus tax for that box of maxi mags. Bless your heart if you did. 😱
That thing makes some nice fireballs. The barrel must be red hot after a mag of that high octane ammo. I just sent you a top secret message.
