I used to use FreeStyler DMX software on a laptop (with USB-DMX dongle) to control my lights which were mostly 2 moving head spots with GOBO's and 2 7-LED PAR's. Along the way I picked up a far number of wireless DMX units like yours before completely downsizing to a boring all-in-one T-Bar like every other one you'd have seen with a foot-switch. I do still have all of that other gear and occasionally consider getting back into it, but since I bring the PA most of the time the extra load-out and low pay tends to make that unappealing. Always open to new ways to do this and if I get into backing tracks like you've put out so many great tutorials about this may be that "next level" thing to bring the show game up a notch. Cheers!
Thanks! And yeah, bring lights AND PA can be a lot for sure. Being in Colorado, anytime it’s in the mountains, the load in is always a nightmare. HI Scott, Could you possibly do a tutorial on programming chases with the operator 384, storing chase speeds and fade times and then programming in stagetraxx 3 a complete song switching between scenes and chases. I'm struggling to figure this out. Thanks
so much easier to use a preprogrammed Midi file when playing with backing tracks, I have the light colors printed on my keyboard keys and I just hit RECORD in Cubase and 'play the lights' to the song, done! That also makes the lights follow the song mood and it really enhances my show
Hey man, great video. I'm wondering why I might want to use/convert to a midi controller rather than just buying a DMX foot controller like the Eurolite DMX Move Bigfoot?
Hey Scott, I'm glad I found your channel. Pulling my hair out in trying to automate tracks with DMX from Mainstage. This video helped a lot. I could get the scenes trigged as I added notes on the MIDI track in Logic. When I export the track as MIDI point out the exact same channel that worked with logic, and load it in Maistage it doesn't work. As far as I know, Mainstage only sends the MIDI file once and when I change the patch. Let me know if you have any thoughts of what I am doing wrong. Thanks for sharing such a valuable content.
Interesting… I tried MainStage years ago and decided to go with ableton, so I’m not familiar with MainStage. Try using that midi file in different software and see if it’s a problem with MainStage or the midi file.
Haha love that you use my exact setup. I use the MC6 pro to control stage Traxx which sends midi to the ADJ in my rack with widi Jack to control my ape labs lights!
Just started doing this with my helix. I can change scenes, chases, switch from rhythm to lead tone, bypass or unbypass different fx all with a single foot switch press. I've got it setup with my snapshots as verses and chorus for each song.
Hi Scott, I use StageTraxx on Mac. Great videos BTW. I can't use midimittr on my Mac. Do you have any suggestions as I don't have a pedal or any other hardware?
Haha I’m working on a video right now about Maestro, so good timing! I have a call with them today for some setup stuff. And I’m interested in Photon 2 for sure 👍
Hi. Do you know QLab? Is it possible to control the light in QLab using a MIDI track written in Logic pro? If possible, how? What is needed for this? I have a DMX Box (Art-NET), Logic pro,4 LED PARs, QLab. And I do not know how to make them work.
Scott, is there a way to program/create a midi light show in Logic via DMXis software (alongside the backing track so it’s perfectly on time) and export the midi data to stagetraxx3 in the backing track file?
Hello Scott, thanks for the tutorial, really helpful ! Nevertheless I do have one question, I'm using the operator 384 as well, do you know if there is a way to control the intensity via midi ? From what I understood, via midi, I can only select bank, chase and scene, but I would like to have my red intensity fading, do you know if that's possible ? Cheers

I have an iPad Pro 12” that only has a USB C output. Is there a way to use my 1 iPad, to play tracks and control lighting simultaneously? Can you output USB-MIDI and mini Jack to a splitter, simultaneously, aswell as charging?
Interesting… I haven’t tried that. But you could use the widi master or widi jack to wirelessly send midi commands and still have access to the usb c port for other stuff 👍
Curious to see some of those new products. I've just been trying out Lightkey to send MIDI from my Ableton tracks, then from the laptop to Artnet. It seems to work well enough, but would love something easier to set up for a cover band sized catalog.
Nice! The b beat video will be out next week. Definitely curious on checking on that MVP. My computer is too old to handle ALL the midi, tracks, lighting, and video for my live show haha
Hello, great tutorial, congratulations. Do you know Edvard Hansson? I would like to try creating a light show like he does with a visualizer such as Wysiwyg or Daslight, using only a DAW (Cubase in my case) before testing it with actual lights. Do you know how it works? Would you be able to explain it in a video? I have been desperately searching for someone who can explain it for at least 10 years, but I have never been lucky enough to find someone who can explain it to me...
@@ScottUhlMusic I haven’t played around with the wave generator, so I don’t know about it’s full potential. But if it’s possible, the waveform could modulate between CC values of 0 and 127. If you set the waveform duration for quarter notes, you could trigger lighting events to turn on precisely on the downbeats.
but you could help me out: tell me how I can program midi-commands to have a kind of "in between"-light (white) when a song ends and the next song starts. thanks in advance
problem is, I don't work with "scenes". I treat light like midi-notes. There are only 4 pitches for blue green red and white from C0-D#0 and I'd like to have (for example) white (D#0) to hold till the next song starts. I use Eurolite LED CLS-18 QCL RGBW. There is an app called MPS by miditool I use, that can do that when ever I stop the song (as it tuns off the reverb etc...) I even sucked out the midi-notes it sends for the "pause"-light, but if I send it from a different sequenzer-app like cubase/logic... it just doesn't hold it... but it is a windows device and therefor not very stable - having troubles with drivers all the time. So I search for a Mac or IOs - solution...
This is kind of a long shot, but I just got into dmx controlling and got a pretty basic controller. I got the hang of creating scenes and chases etc. I run into problems when trying to use midi controlling. I cant get the controller to recieve the midi notes, The setup is pretty simple, DAW (fl studio) -> USB midi to DMX -> DMX controller Im pretty sure the midi channel setup is correct, but Im kind of at a loss and cant figure out what Im doing wrong. Any help is appreciated :)
That could be so many things to be honest. My best guess is that it’s the way the computer is setup to output midi is off. That’s usually the issue. I would mess with FL to see if it’s outputting midi correctly 👍
My understanding is that this DMX controller can be used to send midi. But I’ve never done that personally…. And I would just get a midi controller for that purpose instead
@@ScottUhlMusic My disconnect in understanding here is why wouldn’t I want to use the controller that is already right in front of me? What is the benefit to sending the command with another controller? Wont that just add an unnecessary layer of complexity?
@@joeydego2 I need to look into it more, but I believe it either sends DMX or MIDI, but not both. I prefer Foot Controllers for MIDI, but definitely do whichever works best for your setup!
I purchased this same lighting controller. This works with a Widi jack only AFTER: You flip the polarity switch. This took a half hour out of my life. You have to power the Widi jack. The ADJ sends no power from the midi out. Other than that I’m up and running.
Just for documentary purposes if anyone else stumbles across this: the midi output jack WILL NOT power a WIDI device, such as a WIDI jack. The USB B jack will, however. Amazon USB B to USB C cable and problem solved.
After using the ADJ 384 controller a little more, I feel like the DMX implementation could have been better. When you select a scene and go to another bank and select another scene, it doesn’t shut off the first scene. If you go back to that first bank the scene will still be on. A scene should trigger the previous scene off.
Also blackout should have an all scenes off function. This way you can start a programmed song fresh. Changing songs around a list for different shows will create all sorts of conflicts between beginnings and endings.
Oooh interesting… although it seems like it says it changes the lights based on the incoming video and audio signals. I don’t know if it’s as programmable as I want it to be? Like can I send CC1 (or note 12 or whatever) and it loads what I’ve saved for scene 1?

Interesting… I haven’t tried that. But you could use the widi master or widi jack to wirelessly send midi commands and still have access to the usb c port for other stuff 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic I’ll give this a shot. Thank you Scott. Love the channel 👌🏽
Hi, can I control DMX mixer with MIDI program change or it is possible only with MIDI note?
It depends on the DMX controller
Hello, great tutorial, congratulations. Do you know Edvard Hansson? I would like to try creating a light show like he does with a visualizer such as Wysiwyg or Daslight, using only a DAW (Cubase in my case) before testing it with actual lights.
Do you know how it works? Would you be able to explain it in a video? I have been desperately searching for someone who can explain it for at least 10 years, but I have never been lucky enough to find someone who can explain it to me...
I haven’t heard of Edvard, but I’ll have to check it out 👍
Would using the wave generator on the MC8 help with the limitations you mentioned?
🤔 how would that work? I’m intrigued!
@@tangobasso Oh man that would be interesting for sure! I don't know if my ADJ controller responds to CC commands though.
but you could help me out: tell me how I can program midi-commands to have a kind of "in between"-light (white) when a song ends and the next song starts.
thanks in advance
You would just trigger a white scene between songs 👍 same way to you trigger any lighting with DMX
problem is, I don't work with "scenes".
I cant get the controller to recieve the midi notes,
The setup is pretty simple,
DAW (fl studio) -> USB midi to DMX -> DMX controller
Im pretty sure the midi channel setup is correct, but Im kind of at a loss and cant figure out what Im doing wrong.
Any help is appreciated :)
That could be so many things to be honest. My best guess is that it’s the way the computer is setup to output midi is off. That’s usually the issue. I would mess with FL to see if it’s outputting midi correctly 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic Turns out I connected the wrong MIDI cable into the DMX controller, should have checked it before doing hours of troubleshooting hahah
Will this lighting controller send midi messages for programming stagetrax?
@@ScottUhlMusicYou are correct. There is a switch on the back for DMX OR Midi, not both.
Thanks!
Anyway this is just an input to help. Maybe you can try to pre program the lights then use midi to sync the lights with the music tracks.
You, that would be a great way to use this 👍
Can you use midi to control rotating heads?
You can, but that would be pretty tough with something like this unless you were able to trigger scenes
Hey Scott….I was just wondering if you are familiar/used this or and similar unit….. Behringer C210 200W Active Column Speaker
With a speaker? Like a PA speaker?
Lol….this is just a random question….not pertaining to this particular video….have you every used these types of speaker systems
Oh lol. I was so confused haha. I have the EV evolve 50s and I love them!
I purchased this same lighting controller. This works with a Widi jack only AFTER:
You flip the polarity switch. This took a half hour out of my life.
You have to power the Widi jack. The ADJ sends no power from the midi out.
Other than that I’m up and running.
It’s always a half hour to figure out one switch needs to be flipped lol
@@ScottUhlMusic Can you verify if the ADJ 384 USB port provides power to a WIDI device?
Just for documentary purposes if anyone else stumbles across this: the midi output jack WILL NOT power a WIDI device, such as a WIDI jack. The USB B jack will, however. Amazon USB B to USB C cable and problem solved.
Bro which software do you use pc
I use a Mac 👍
@ i have windows 10
Name of the software
After using the ADJ 384 controller a little more, I feel like the DMX implementation could have been better. When you select a scene and go to another bank and select another scene, it doesn’t shut off the first scene. If you go back to that first bank the scene will still be on. A scene should trigger the previous scene off.
Also blackout should have an all scenes off function. This way you can start a programmed song fresh. Changing songs around a list for different shows will create all sorts of conflicts between beginnings and endings.
@@joeydego2can you recommend a better alternative?
Roland VC-1-DMX? YuanKanJu DecaBox MIDI to DMX Converter?
Holy shit that second one might be it!!!!!! Thank you for sharing. I’m going to look more into that 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Another option might be the doremidi midi to dmx box mtd-1014
Thank you
🤘
Shoulda known it would be wireless 🔥
Roland VC-1-DMX?
Oooh interesting… although it seems like it says it changes the lights based on the incoming video and audio signals. I don’t know if it’s as programmable as I want it to be? Like can I send CC1 (or note 12 or whatever) and it loads what I’ve saved for scene 1?
Actually… I watched a tutorial on it, it’s pretty wild! I think that other one you said would be better. Thanks for the suggestions!
Hey Scott thanks for your videos. Without your videos I would still be in the dark. Is there no solution from CME to drive midi dmx? May be the widi uhost? I want to use the M live b beat , to control two modeling amps and the light. Thx for your Help.
You should be able to use wireless midi from
CME to control lighting the same way it works in this video 👍
use freestyler with usb DMX interface! It is much easyer…
I’ll have to check it out, thanks!
So now I'm looking at my Helix, thinking 'this can send midi commands...'
Yup! It definitely would work for this!
MTD 1024
My next video is on that 🤘
What about this Bro
DORMIDI MIDI TO DMX
Working on a video now 👍
