  • In this video, we are going over how to use MIDI to control your DMX lighting gear. So you can send midi commands to your DMX controlled lighting using a midi keyboard/controller/foot controller, or you can also use a tablet/computer to send MIDI to your lighting in order to sync up to the music. This is a fairly advanced tutorial, and you should understand the basics of MIDI and DMX programming before starting. If you need help, watch my beginner DMX guide here: and watch my beginner MIDI guide here: • MIDI Programming & Com...

You don't linger with inconsequentials, you're thorough and complete every idea presented from beginning to end. There are no other videos on YT about this subject that is this good. Great vid as usual. I do this with a Chauvet Foot-C2, which is a little more limited than a full controller, but is perfect for what I need and adds emergency foot control over the lights for instances of "technical difficulty" that inevitably arise. Thanks again for all you do!

    Scott: Within Logic, if you go into the drop-down menu entry "Settings... / Display...", there is a setting in the "Displays" section called "Display Middle C As:". By default, it is set to "C3 (Yamaha)". If you change this to the alternate setting "C4 (Roland)", your Note Names and MIDI numbers will align in accordance with those indicated in your DMX controller documentation.

    I used to use FreeStyler DMX software on a laptop (with USB-DMX dongle) to control my lights which were mostly 2 moving head spots with GOBO's and 2 7-LED PAR's. Along the way I picked up a far number of wireless DMX units like yours before completely downsizing to a boring all-in-one T-Bar like every other one you'd have seen with a foot-switch. I do still have all of that other gear and occasionally consider getting back into it, but since I bring the PA most of the time the extra load-out and low pay tends to make that unappealing. Always open to new ways to do this and if I get into backing tracks like you've put out so many great tutorials about this may be that "next level" thing to bring the show game up a notch. Cheers!

    • @ScottUhlMusic
      @ScottUhlMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! And yeah, bring lights AND PA can be a lot for sure. Being in Colorado, anytime it’s in the mountains, the load in is always a nightmare. I’ve had to take it up ski lifts (well, enclosed ones) before lol. It definitely made me want to downsize. I have a pretty small setup that actually does work quite well though!

    USELESS TRIVIA: Way back in the day when my brother and I first got midi controllable lights we showed up in the A.M. after a gig the night before and programmed every light and scene laboriously one at a time. We spent HOURS doing this, Until our sound guy came in and said "Why don't you just copy the horns track midi and send it to the lights?" Haha We were so pissed! It really was that easy with the gear we had at the time!
    Great video Scott. I'm amazed at how doable all of this stuff is today. Thank you for this video!

    Thank you for making great videos, I`ve learned a lot from them! I have been looking for a lighting/DMX setup that can be controlled by Stage Traxx and also supports fades, and I think I finally found a good solution using Stage Traxx app, Photon 2 app and a DMX King MAX 1 connected to a wireless router. I tested the setup live last saturday and it worked flawlessly. Earlier I`ve been using a similar controller to what you are demonstrating in this video, but I really wanted the possibility to program fades. Big thanks to you Scott and to CaliforniaCreedence, for making great and useful content!

    Hey Scott, I'm glad I found your channel. Pulling my hair out in trying to automate tracks with DMX from Mainstage. This video helped a lot. I could get the scenes trigged as I added notes on the MIDI track in Logic. When I export the track as MIDI point out the exact same channel that worked with logic, and load it in Maistage it doesn't work. As far as I know, Mainstage only sends the MIDI file once and when I change the patch. Let me know if you have any thoughts of what I am doing wrong. Thanks for sharing such a valuable content.

    • @ScottUhlMusic

      It depends on the DMX controller

  • @joeydego2
    @joeydego2 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    After using the ADJ 384 controller a little more, I feel like the DMX implementation could have been better. When you select a scene and go to another bank and select another scene, it doesn’t shut off the first scene. If you go back to that first bank the scene will still be on. A scene should trigger the previous scene off.

    • @joeydego2
      @joeydego2 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also blackout should have an all scenes off function. This way you can start a programmed song fresh. Changing songs around a list for different shows will create all sorts of conflicts between beginnings and endings.

    The setup is pretty simple,
    DAW (fl studio) -> USB midi to DMX -> DMX controller

    • @giarebig474
      @giarebig474 ปีที่แล้ว

      problem is, I don't work with "scenes". I treat light like midi-notes. There are only 4 pitches for blue green red and white from C0-D#0 and I'd like to have (for example) white (D#0) to hold till the next song starts. I use Eurolite LED CLS-18 QCL RGBW. There is an app called MPS by miditool I use, that can do that when ever I stop the song (as it tuns off the reverb etc...) I even sucked out the midi-notes it sends for the "pause"-light, but if I send it from a different sequenzer-app like cubase/logic... it just doesn't hold it... but it is a windows device and therefor not very stable - having troubles with drivers all the time. So I search for a Mac or IOs - solution...
