Helpful tip - make sure to double check your off position in the dip switch app. We were getting nowhere until we realized that our "on" and "off" direction was backwards. Once we changed that setting in the app and set the address, everything was working perfectly. Great video - thanks for the help, WLH!
Hey, thanks for teaching me how to do this. I'm actually working on doing this at our youth sanctuary cross lights, as sort of a senior gift to add them to the lighting system
Thanks for the guide. We use this to back light the cross in our sanctuary. Used our wireless DMX transmitter/receivers + Lightkey for Mac and it worked great! The tip for using Sprinkler wire to extend the led channels was a gem! Thanks again.
Any chance you can elaborate on this? Sounds exactly what I'm trying to do but not having any luck. I've basically used exactly the same equipment as the guy in the video. What fixture do I use with in Lightkey and how do I control it from there? Thanks
I'm going to follow your instructions as shown above. Looks like just what we need. MY QUESTION: what do you do with the "pins" on the end of the LED light strip?? Wrap it in black tape?? Cut it off?? Just leave it alone?? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.
That's brilliant! Newbie question, though: how do you control the decoder with the app? Do you need to create a LAN connection (from the iPhone to the DMX decoder) or else way?
I don’t think the app is to control the decoder. He didn’t explain it well, but I think the app is just a handy tool that tells you how to arrange the dipswitches on the decoder to assign it to a specific DMX address
can you use one decoder for say 4 led strips and also for some light fixtures combined? i mean do you have to daisy chain from the encoder to other lighting fixtures?
I don't know much about this stuff, but I watched your RGBW LED tape and fabric church stage design idea video. did you have to have a separate dmx decoder for each of the panels you guys made?
8E8Studios Sounds like someone found my notebook haha. Thanks so much. We are working on a new design for the stage you see behind me at the beginning and end and I am filming it all!
Thanks for the useful tips. Love the frames with tape light and string design. Do you have a "how to" for making those? Would love something like that at our church as well. Thanks again.
We are currently building a design very similar to install the first week of nov. I’m filming as we go to hopefully have a video for the cannel soon after! Thanks for watching
I'm creating a booth (2 of them total, one each) for our musicians that will have 6 rows of LED Strip lights across the front and sides. How many DMX Decoders and Power Supplies would you suspect I would need to order? We would be ordering these now for Easter.
Hello I'm so impressed and from UGANDA one of the local church in Adjumani, I would like to know how much it would cost me to get the DMX recorder in Uganda and the led lights
Very useful video. Unfortunately, in India we are not able to purchase these items from Amazon. Can you guide us to purchase this from a diffrent app/location? God bless you🙌🙌🙌
How many amps is the power supply in the video? The one from the link looks larger. Would like to get by with a smaller supply like the one in the video if possible.
I have the DMX decoder for my RGB LED light strips (4 x 5M) and It works great and your video really helped. I recently acquired the WS 2815 individually addressable LED and I have have some great sequences with them controlled by an Arduino. Do you know what I would need to put these into my DMX chain? (it would be some other kind of dmx decoder maybe 4 or 8 ports with a 1 channel with a dimmer function and 1 for power - Data Line In from the Led Striped) All I want to is add them to each scene for a controllable on/off when I need them to come in.
I have done something very similar. I have an Arudino Nano connected to a MAX485 that is accepting DMX input from QLC+. I can set static colours and have the ability yo trigger some of my own lighting effects/sequences that I have created using FastLED. Let me know if of interest...
Thanks great video. I just bought a decoder and strips on line, how many strips could I run on one decoder? Like could I extend the wires from a few different spots back to one decider and twist them together and then into the decoder?
how to control argb light with dmx controller.. there is an app named LED Strip Studio which uses DMX Controller to control cinematic style lights. can u make an viceo for this if possible???

What about those strips with only three wires, which individual bulbs can be controlled independently? You’ve got decoder for those kinda strips? I want them on my set.
@@WorshipLeaderHangout Yeah strips with 5 wires can only be controlled entirely, the 3 wire ones have individual LED control ability. So you can do animations or left to right and stuff like that.
Thanks for the guide... i followed the steps but i have found that when i turn them on i get a weird high pitched noise coming through the vocal microphone channels... any ideas on how to fix this?

What software are the running to control the lights, can the light key app run? I’m new to this game and trying to find a simple setup. Thanks for the great content.
If you have Mac, even access to an old MacBook DEFINITELY use lightkey. It is the most amazing to use and beautiful lighting software out there, and if you are running most of you fixtures to do the same thing, you can set them all to the same channel and maybe even pull of just using the free 24 channel trial lightkey mode.
Does this mean each each decoder dip switch settings will control only one color? What if you want the strip connected to the decoder change colors ow do you do that?
If you wanna be anal about it, why not just replace the terminal's standard screws with ones that have a good point on them? That way you can just leave the wire contained within its jacket.. 😉
So I was just wondering, if we were to buy the same exact set up as your but with a smaller light controller (obey 4) would I have the same address as you? If not, how do would you find the address?
DMX works on a 512 block grid. Each fixture takes up space on the grid starting at any available block. For example these strips take up three blocks on the grid and you can only address them in available block where you can fit three side by side. If you already have fixtures taking up blocks 1 - 50 then you would start one of your strips on block 51. It will take up 51, 52 and 53 but you only need to address it to 51. Your next strip will start at 54 and so on. I hope this helps. (you can address yours the same as mine as long as you have the available "blocks") Thanks for watching. Great worship leaders are always learning. 9 years ago I would have had no idea what I was talking about, but with lots of exposure and time with DMX and stage lighting I have learned a ton. Hope you will do the same.
I’m sure you’ve moved on but for the record this is actually compatible, you just won’t have white, obviously. Just don’t connect anything to the white channel, and you’ll just have a dead channel on your DMX Universe. For anyone looking, I highly suggest doing a setup with rgbw as quickly going to white when a chorus goes ‘big’ has an incredible effect.
If we have two decoders with the same setup do you just chain the two in order to have the same colors for separate strips? Or does it automatically chain wirelessly through the app when both decoders are set with the same code? Hopefully that makes sense.
Ok so I like to have a different dmx address for each decoder so that I can program a different color for each strip. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching!
Question. So my church is getting ready for Easter. And we have this background that we want to attach these acrylic tubes to it with the led lights inside. Can I cut the strip little by little or would it be easier to have the one long led strip?
Yea I believe you can use the given connector on the opposite side or splice them together. I would use a different decoder so that you can have more options in color arrangements.
Worship Leader Hangout I am having trouble getting the dmx decoder to work with the led lights. I have plugged in all wires into their corresponding channels and the led lights do not turn on. I made sure to turn on the dmx decoder and nothing. I’m using an rgb led strip, the same dmx decoder from the video, and a power supply of 12v 5a. What am I doing wrong? Please help.
If you are sure you have power and everything is connected correctly then I would double check your DMX address on your dip switch. Make sure it is set correctly. The last dip switch on these decoders need to be off to use with your lighting software/board. On mine it’s labeled “fun” anyway, that needs to be off. It’s hard to troubleshoot through a comment so, I hope this helps.
We are running a three channel DMX system being controlled by the Chauvet Obey 3 rgb. All the fixtures are set to master/slave mode. Trying to connect one of these led strips powered by the decoder in the DMX loop but not having any luck getting them to follow the other fixtures. Any idea what dip switch patter is master slave mode?
Patrick Sanders I would look at your first led fixture to see if it is indicating a DMX channel. If so the put that number into your dip switch cal. then match it to your dip switch on the decoder. Make sure the fun switch is off. Otherwise I would change your other led fixtures to the exact dmx number you want instead of doing a master slave function on them. You could even start to change them and allow for them to be used separately to create more interesting light scenes. We always patch all of our lights separately on the dmx universe. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much for your reply, I'm still not having any luck. Changed the setup a little bit to try to get it to work, these LED strips are the only fixtures connected to this controller (Chauvet obey 3 www.chauvetdj.com/products/obey-3/ ). I cannot find the dip switch setting on the decoder to allow the obey 3 to control them. They are working not connected to the controller using the built in controls in the decoder. Or if there is a simple controller that you might recommend that you know works with it, that would be great!
Jesse Pierce I use DMX and/or XLR cable purchased in bulk. Most of your production companies and pro sound/lighting companies will be able to sell it to you by the foot. DMX is ready to go combining 4 wires in one housing and is perfect for extending these strips.
Just FYI there are two types of dmx cable a 3 conductor and a 5 conductor. To go from control box to the strip you need the 5 conductor and you just use 4 of the wires and cut off the 5th wire.
I need to install 6 panels. How can I plug all 6 led panels to one decoder and Which power box can I use to power the up the 6 panels from one decoder box?
if i wanna run 10 strips independently like one meter long led strip making a design, would i need 10 decoder or a multi channel decoder with multiple output could act the same ? so i can run 10 strips on its own or multiple at once via sowftare or dmx table
A multi channel decoder will work well. I used individual decoders to so that i didn't have to run as much extension wire from each strip. I did however use more DMX cable. So, it's kinda personal preference. Just to give you some insight, I will be using several multi channel decoders on my next project later this year.
I know this is late, but we used to use these exact controllers, and we ran Ethernet cable (Wire colours are perfect, and what we had available) from each set of strips (a square, bar etc) and back to a controller, where you just screw in both sets of wires. We found this way was better than having everything daisy-chained, as the brightness wouldn’t suffer as much, and it was easier to set up. We ran a 12v 30A transformer (AliExpress) to each controller, and that ran the lights fine, you can probably run about 12m on a single controller this way without them starting to be noticeably dimmer than sets that are less long.
Helpful tip - make sure to double check your off position in the dip switch app. We were getting nowhere until we realized that our "on" and "off" direction was backwards. Once we changed that setting in the app and set the address, everything was working perfectly. Great video - thanks for the help, WLH!

A multi channel decoder will work well. I used individual decoders to so that i didn't have to run as much extension wire from each strip. I did however use more DMX cable. So, it's kinda personal preference. Just to give you some insight, I will be using several multi channel decoders on my next project later this year.
Can you add multiple LED strip lights and connect them together and just use one DMX decoder?
Jordan Sunnasy yes. I had to for our current design and it works great for me. Thanks for watching.
How do you pull off a "daisy chain" with multiple LED segmants but still maintain adequate power supply? @@WorshipLeaderHangout
And how do you do that? How do you connect them all?
I know this is late, but we used to use these exact controllers, and we ran Ethernet cable (Wire colours are perfect, and what we had available) from each set of strips (a square, bar etc) and back to a controller, where you just screw in both sets of wires.
We found this way was better than having everything daisy-chained, as the brightness wouldn’t suffer as much, and it was easier to set up.
We ran a 12v 30A transformer (AliExpress) to each controller, and that ran the lights fine, you can probably run about 12m on a single controller this way without them starting to be noticeably dimmer than sets that are less long.
