As a lifelong resident of Appalachia, I can vouch the weird stuff that is just normal for all us that live here. It takes an outsider to point it out and then you stop and wonder why it never seemed strange before but...it's usually best not to think too hard on these things. Lol

I lived in West Virginia for about a year and I’m telling you there are things in those mountains. Once my mom was doing the laundry on our porch when she called me outside. “Look!”, she said pointing to the top of a nearby hill. I looked and saw what had to be the largest buck deer I’ve ever seen. The rack on it was at least six feet wide. I looked at my mom to ask her something, but I stopped. Her face went from Wonder to confusion to fear. “Let’s go in, I think it might charge us.”, she said looking back. I turned to take a last look and saw that the deer was standing on its hind legs. It the turned and walked into the woods on two legs.

My question is the same as the one before me. Where at in wv...if you don't mind? I live in Nicholas county wv. And I live in the "boonies." Which is "mountain talk" for deep in the mountains, the back woods, or the hills. But I have 4 babies so I like to know exactly what's out here... I have more stories from my time in WV. But, the scariest one I remember is the night before we moved back to Ohio. You see, over that summer we had “varmints” trying to get into our barn and chicken coop. Our dogs, two pit mixes, would chase them away. Once, a bear tried and my dad and brother had to go outside with their guns to help chase it off. But that night, I woke up to the chickens screeching in their coop. I looked over to see if my brother was going to get up, but he wasn’t there. I opened the bedroom door to find my dad and brother sitting by the front door on kitchen chairs with their guns in their laps. My mom and sister was on the couch trying to keep her baby quiet. I wondered why they hadn’t gone outside when I noticed the dogs weren’t barking. I listened close and heard them whimpering under the porch. Suddenly, one of the dogs yelped and started biting at something. Then there was a loud crack, then silence. Then I heard the other dog go through the same experience. I was about to ask what’s happening when I heard something step up on the porch. It started walking across as my dad and brother stood up and pointed their guns at the door. The knob rattled, but the door stayed closed. Whatever it was began circling the house. I ran into my bedroom and covered my head. I must have passed out because the next thing I knew, it was light outside. I went into the front room to find my mom and sister throwing everything we owned into boxes, bags and baskets. I looked outside and out porch and yard was covered with blood and assorted parts from out livestock and dogs. “ What happened? Where’s dad?”, I asked. “Get your clothes packed, we’re leaving!”, my mom yelled. It turned out that my dad and brother had gone into town to rent a U-Haul and to tell my uncle that the gardens and what was left of the livestock was up for grabs. We were back in Akron before nightfall.

The dog probably saved that bloke. He was driving after drinking in thick fog and dangerous conditions, and if he’d have taken that angry phone call involving his sister’s girlfriend while still driving in the tunnel he may have crashed. The dog stopped him just as the call came in. He should have headed back down to the river route the next day with some doggy treats and left them in thanks.

@@Bekawolf1 Do you think it could be a warning sign and people don't always listen to a warning sign, so instead it gets blamed for things? You're given a warning, you don't get it, you die - thus wrongful blaming. It just seems strange that it would look so scary though and make you so uncomfortable and practically have ptsd from it lol. But who knows, we can't understand. It does seem there's a chance it saved you though, so that's good. 🤎
(*Edit: Maybe that's legitimately what it looks like as it still is helpful. Unless you see what you need to see? It just seems unfair to be scared for so long I guess. Do you think there's any way your brain concocted it to save you or stress or anything? I've seen super weird things so I would believe you. Just curious what your opinion is.)

That's a cool interpretation. I'm impressed. :D Why do you think it seems to be so unnerving though in its vibe and appearance? Because I feel like it could stop you in other ways without scarring you for the rest of your life, lol. I mean a good experience can make you want to be careful moving forward as well. But who knows, maybe that's just what this thing looks like. 🤷‍♀️ Or maybe it looks like what you need to see? But still... It sucks to be scared of it for such a long time.

I'm surprised my story made it in. Typing it out last night nearly brought me to tears, the multiple grammatical errors i went back to and fixed were the result of that. What I experienced scared me off from hiking on that section of the AT for the foreseeable future, when I eventually do thru hike I'm planning to knock out that section in a whole day and get it behind me asap. Other hikers have experienced weird lights as well, notably in the North Carolina/Tennessee section in GSMNP, and one group a few years back woke up 50 miles north of where they set up camp in Maine. If anyone has had any weird experiences, please make them known.

These stories bring back memories of growing up in a town in NY in the shadow of Northern Appalachia. Such danger and such wonder the woods held, especially in Autumn when the deciduous trees created a full carpet of leaves on the ground. No telling if there were copperheads, mice, or other creatures hiding within.
Also, give that dog a treat for saving the first narrator's life. Drunk driving, distracting phone calls, and bad visibility are perfect for car accidents on their own; I would be counting my blessings for getting out of that one alive, even if dogs have always made me nervous. EDIT: Hey, it is Let's Read on the other end of the phone in the first story.

    • @Bekawolf1

I will say if I saw it again I would give it a treat. But I will say I wasn't drunk while driving(I wont say I didn't drink but those was 3 to 4 hours before my drive. I drank the the beginning of the party. As I knew I wasn't gonna stay long. Parties are not really my cup of tea), and the call from my sister was the only time I picked up my phone. As I tend to keep my phone in my jacket pocket or under my jacket in the passenger seat, to keep myself from using it while driving.

the Appalachians are considered a hotspot for unexplainable events, basically if ya wanna experience the unknown these mountains are a near sure fire place to do so .... why? maybe its on a ley line and taps into some supernatural power, maybe the barriers between dimensions are weaker there maybe it acts as a nexus between realities where portals appear and vanish regularly ... we may never know ..because those who find out are likely those who vanish into the mountains never to be seen again....

I once heard an Appalachia story, I won’t ever forget.
Burt Reynolds, Ned Betty, and a couple of their friends had planned a wonderful canoeing trip down a river. It started out innocently enough. While they were at the general store, grabbing a few last minute supplies, and taking care of a few of the final preparations. One of the group got into a guitar vs banjo duel, with a genetically handicapped boy. This trip went down-river from there, one could say.

Engrossing story and indeed scary. Second time lucky I must say, and thankfully it ended @ the second time itself, and didn’t go to the third time, great story and narration.
The creature in the second story at least didn’t harm the person and just went away. A nebulous phantom-like apparition who didn’t even bother about the human present there. That’s nice.
The last one steals the show!!.. sky changing colours, missing stars, mixed signals on the phone!!.. this is thrilling and oh so engrossing!!.. these are real suspenseful stories and make me lose the passage of time!.. great job of narration and excellent story!!..

The story of the forest ranger Mayer_Bear which he described as finding something similar in dutch folklore "die takman" or "Takkenman"... According to the internet (yea, quite the trusting source) Takkenman seems to be a modern folklore created on the forum in 2009.
However, my culture stems from Dutch, and Nordic cultures and as kids when we were naughty my parents used to scare us with "Takirr" (Pronounced Tak~e~RR) which in my language sounds like it could be related to this folklore and with very similar descriptions. Strangely enough this was carried down by my great great grandparents which would make this lore at least 130 years older than 2009.
Even though I'm not a believer in these supernatural creatures I do find the lore SUPER interesting.

I moved to Blairsville from Atlanta last July (my Mother grew up here). When I first moved, my neighbor prayed a hedge of protection over my property. One morning before dawn I saw a feline creature sitting at the edge of the property, staring at me. It was backlit so I couldn’t see it’s features. But it definitely was not any natural creature. It’s head was largely out of proportion to its body. I always thought it was demonic. It would not come over my property line.
