    I like to swing my arm down because I feel swinging it across creates an opposite torque motion of my shoulders compared to the torque of my body, slowing my kick down. To compensate for the straight cross when lowkicking I like to ‘over’ turn my shoulder so my chin stays tucked behind it or move my left hand slightly diagonally up instead of straight up, keeping it at peek-a-boo height in front of my face with palm out, ready to parry and counter myself (also always keep the face of center line while kicking). Great video!

    Hi Shawn, Thank You for these informative videos while in quarantine! I trained at a gym where they taught us to push out with the lead hand almost like a block or palm strike to the face, rather than swinging it, where the move would look kind of like turning on a lawnmower. It looks similar to the 2nd example you showed. The idea is your chin is unprotected if you swing out your arm, whereas, pushing out with the hand protects the chin and blocks some of the opponent's view.

    Nice vid. as usual,soy dee,your a great nak muay,keep up the good work.I was taught (by Jan Plas(founder of mejiro gym Amsterdam/Dutch muay-thai kickboxing)
    that another reason for swinging the arm,apart from hip insertion,is that it functions as a counter weight,keeping balance,and speeding up the return of the hip and foot to the floor(on guard posotion),futhermore a well made kick should land outside of punching distance(not always possible,as the opponent movement plays a role)
    As to cover/defensive movement,we were taught to insert the shoulder and the hip as one,pointing towards the opponent upon landing,wich creates the oppertunity to tuck the chin on the inside of the leading shoulder/kickin'side(As with punching) In regard to the opposite hand,there are 2 options,1 circle upwards to the temple,to function as a strong defense against hooks/overhand,
    2 circle up and inwards,placing the hand on the shoulder of the kicking side,thumb down(pronated),Elbow up,covering the chin with the forearm(Same way you would when you kao long range,exept,instead of thucking the chin in the pit of the Elbow,it's thucked inside of the shoulder,as with the mechanics on 1) shelling the head so it limits the headmovement on impact of a counter punch,thus resonating the force through the body.
    Not meant as a comment,more so to add upon,sharing the knowledge.
    Nothin'but love&respect,khap khun khrab ;)

    The best advice I got from a teacher was -
    1. If you're throwing any kicks at a height where they can check it with their leg this means they still have free fists to counter back with the punch but
    2. If you are throwing above this height/mid section up they will generally be using their hands to block it so you will be free to then throw your hand down for the extra thrust. 🙏

    Our coach recommends to not guard your left cheek with you left arm when kicking. If we can we should bring it more to right side and cover the part of our face which is more likely to get hit when our opponent is countering with a punch. I hope you know what I'm training to say :D It seemed logical to me and it became a habit. Made me feel much safer as a beginner.

    It depends on the situation, I kick a lot without swinging the arm (I got used to the muay chaiya kick, even if it is very different from the muay thai kick, but that's another story), but in certain combos that I prefer to use a powerful kick, I swing the arm.

  • @karatechris6610
    @karatechris6610 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What I usually do is swing my left arm in front of my face, instead of to the left side of the face, to defend against a jab or cross. So my right arm follows the same path as yours (diagonally across and down at a 45 degree angle), but my left arm will swing the other side of my head to yours, i.e. to the right side of my head. I am actually swinging my left arm in the same sort of way as you, just to the other side of the head; and with the hip twist and shoulder movement it means that it ends up in front of my face to block a head counter. I usually finish with me left hand in front with an open palm to maximise the area of the block, but always just below the eye line so you can still see your opponent and protect the bridge of your nose and chin. If you are in close, you are unlikely to get countered by a round kick anyway.

    So, I'm a complete beginner, and I realised that if I don't swing my arm at this stage, I cannot do the roundhouse kick correctly, I cannot get the mobility for it. But as I'm aware that this is making me predictable and leaving a weak spot, I try to move my left arm across the face on the other side to compensate. But as I said I'm a total beginner and I have no clue what consequences this might bring. What do you think about this? Thanks! Super videos, btw!

    • @nagyb13
      @nagyb13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      axisludi that was my thoughts as well , if you able to block with it than can be useful, but you can easly get a hook if the other able to read that.how i learned it as swing your arms until you reach the point when you can do it perfectly than work on the defensive side for your head. Hope it was helpful for you, work hard, stay strong!

    I currently train in Sanda, and learned my kicks through Muay Thai (really your videos) and I have the habit of swining my left arm (non kicking) down and up to guard position when I kick, but my coach has criticized it for my left arm swing telegraphing my kick and not protecting my face enough. Any alternatives or should I work on speeding up and having that arm swing be very subtle to not be it telegraphed, or- is that left arm movement too fast to be telegraph a kick in general? Thanks for all the work Sean!

    • @seanfagan
      @seanfagan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're throwing your right kick then your left arm should be up by your face. Whatever side you're kicking with should be the arm you swing down - not the opposite - otherwise you're working against your natural body mechanics and stopping your full momentum. Does that make sense?

  • @juanhoffmann4096
