I'm glad I could watch a video of the RS4 without the usual "Its crap because it won't drift" view. Benefits of 4 wheel drive shown here by the much slower Audi beating the AMG in wet conditions by a large margin! Nice video guys!

C63 in the UK is good for about 8 months of the year. The RS4 you can go fast in and have fun year round. No brainer for me!

Ian Davidson The A, The C, the B has "tablets". The E, S has a larger built in screen in the dashboard. I have driven the A250 sport, and ive spent time around the C-class, and honestly, its not a thing you notice unless you want to have something to dislike. In a fairly little car (compared to the S&E) a bigger screen would be almost a comic thing.

You could hear the Audi's cam chain starting to rattle more and more through the video. Let's hope Audi fixes that!

Very interesting test, I personally much prefer the look of the RS4 but also the feel of the atmo engine, well the Mercedes may quicker, but how would it behave in the snow, people in Europe are often driving to go skiing.

what were the dry times? Not suprised the merc is quicker, so much more power and torque these days. Just cant do NA anymore.
So is it just me that notice that on the rs4 lap when they were changing the camara angles the window wipers were on and then off in other shots but yet they classed it as the same lap
I think it's not a continuous video…because the viper works more in the view of hood camera and the viper works less in the view internal shoulder camera…
Which one sounds better, C63 or RS4?
The Audi is on a 8+ year old platform at this point, the C63 spanking new. In 6 months you might get to pit the new RS4 against the C63. Given the advancement in the Audi B9 platform I'd imagine the RS4 will be the car to beat, in the dry or wet. the new S4 is almost as quick as the outgoing RS4 (and actually felt quicker when I tested it) and far better balanced. Its got a hideous tablet on the dash too however!
why are the saloon version compared ?

I believe that these cars, even though track worthy, are never designed for somewhere like hokkenhiem or any other track, these cars are designed for the real world and in the real world, I believe the Audi would cream the Merc (even with the AWD) simply because if there is one thing Audi knows how to make, is a fast estate car and they've been at it for decades!.
I remember when the C6 RS6 came out, everyone hated it but on real roads, no M5 or E63 could ever hope to come close, let alone keep-up with the beast. If you want a super-fast estate car and you buy anything other than an Audi, frankly you're a bit of a fanboy.

I agree about the RS6, it's the craziest wagon out there and Chris Harris loves it, but the E series AMG is pretty mad too, and RS6 are not available in all market...

If M5 cant get close to something on a public road, you need to slow down ffs. In the end you can't use these cars on the limit, and since the differences are discovered only on the limit, you choose the one you like, perfomance be damned.

Even before watching I knew the RS4 would be quicker but that C63 has to be one of the most stunning estates in the world and let's face it how much track time are either of these cars ever realistically going to see. It might not be quite as quick but my money would go on the beautiful Merc...if of course I had the moeny. ;-)

hahahaha this is brilliant, "at the end of the day when it was dry the Merc beat the Audi..." er ok, by how much? Bearing in mind a 1.5 second difference to the Audi (in the wet) and the Merc having a mostly dry/mildly damp track. I think the RS4 is the proper choice for the UK, you're not gonna be having "fun" in the car on the road anyway, sliding a big long estate car around... nah not gonna happen and they're aren't going to see a track unless it's a special occasion lol. Practically permanently greasy UK roads, I think it's safe to say the Audi all day long. Plus, why didn't you film the dry laps? If the reasons were based on what it was like in the cabin for the Merc and the way it drives normally then fair enough seeing as how they're apparently "equal" in terms of track times. But saying the most "fun" is a bit of a cop out in my opinion. I'm not hating here, it just seems like a contradictory result to me to what we actually see in the video, especially when you're praising the atmospheric V8 and it's revving out etc.

Honestly though, who takes either of these cars out on the track? What really matters is every day usability and fun. And I think the C63 with its turbo V8 wins that category. What I miss from this test is how these cars handle B-roads and city streets. As well as interior quality, space and usability.
Well said at the end of the video, we'll take the one that makes you smile, but I mostly smile on these occasions: 1. during the winter when I'm overtaking cars on slippery uphill or when they are stuck, 2. when I see RWD drivers desperately trying to be perfect driver and pull out most of the RWD grip on the corners, and eventually spin, 3. Traffic light to light racing, in normal city traffic roads, not on those cleaned from the dust and oil and everything else ones like on the track. I have driven RWD myself, they are really fun, but an expensive one.

I love both so much. However the na v8 engine and Quattro in the rs4 just takes the cake, especially in the uk with our crappy roads and weather. Although between the b9 rs4 and the c63 estate; That’s the easiest decision on the planet. C63 estate all day
Serious question, who is really buying these high performance luxury wagons? Is it for space or ride quality? I can't imagine shelling out for one of these over a saloon, coupe, or suv. So what's the ace in the whole for these things? Do people actually like the way the look?
The distinguishing factor between these two cars is not so much about which one is the fastest. Their performances are pretty much similar. What matters is personal preferences to the exterior styling, interior design and badge. A Mercedes Benz fanatic will likely be biased against Audi even though Audi may edge the Merc in some aspects, and vice versa.

Lap in RS4 was done in the rain but the wipers weren't on in 1st person view, when every other view had wipers on...... understand you need footage for the video but it got very annoying.....
though you mention in the end about a dry lap , i would like to say something to auto express team . something that is a rule and must always be followed. WE DON'T TEST RWD CARS WITH AWD CARS IN THE WET ! NEVER !!!!!!! is it wet ? the test will take place the day after . again wet ? the other day etc until its fully dry !

I wonder if Audi will ever change the look of their cars, the a3 the a4 the a5 the a6 and the a1's front end all look the exact same. Ok the a7 looks slightly different but not dramatically at all.
i understand you statement but i believe it is what they want to creat in there cars. as you probably know, audi's are well known for being sleepers, they pass by and you don't even notice them but when you take the time to look at it, you see how beautiful they are. and this is why i love them so much. and i live benz because they go a bit more crazy in the styling of there cars. if you want people to look at you, take the mc but if you want to be unseen, get the audi.
The RS4 is getting on a bit now.
I highly doubt they'd ever be driven on public roads like they got driven on that track. So I'd go with the car that is slighly mad and fun. God help the C63 drivers if it's pouring with rain.

If anything it would be just as quick. Remember that all of that torque and hp is going to 2 wheels, not 4 like the rs4. I personally think that rs4 should be retired and audi needs to focus only on their glorious rs6. Now that's the one to beat when it comes to estate vehicles.
Now imagine the RS4 being brand new and having 400ho just like the C63!
Or imagine the RS4 turbo charged !! What then ????

Mechanical clutch? That's why M is better with its electronic clutch. Mechanical clutch works as torque vectoring, eLSD can be programmed rather work as a lock diff or a torque vectoring. ///M>AMG.
Well, oversteer is better than understeer in terms of quick. Is like on TG track, the M3 beat RS5 coz TG tracks are mostly fast corners where low end traction doesn't require that much.

What the hell Steve? Why don't you memorize a script or something. RS4 B4? Don't you mean RS4 B5 (2.7L V6 biturbo) the first RS4 launched in 2000 (or the previous RS4 B7 4.2L V8) the B4 is the RS2 , based on the Audi 80.

just saying, the C63 has beautiful traction in the dry. however, in the wet, 510 horsepower on a traditional rear drive set up will never be faster than the equivalent 4 wheel drive. just the truth.

Great both cars,but I think the new RS4 with 4,0TT will smash Amg on the wet and dry and drag race everything,like new RS3 kill all now;)
POWER!! Audi wins the short drags. Dry, wet whatever. 4WD is just better off the line. The Merc just has the charisma, and the extra touch on the interior that makes it a FINER car, design and interior wise. The Audi other than the sound is not exiting in any way. in my opinion :)
