C63 AMG - The true cost of ownership..

  • So here is the video that everyone has been asking for.. How much does it cost to run a W204 Mercedes C63 AMG as a weekend toy? Well.. for me.. it worked out at around 1.62 per mile in 2021. This cost would probably decrease with the more miles that you did, as the servicing would be offset the further that you drove the car, I don't think the fuel would have that much of an effect. Is it what you expected?

    Had mine a few weeks now and put about 1400 miles on it, 300-350 miles per tank and if I had kids I would sell them to fuel it, can't stop driving it. Love it.

    Great video. Tells me that the cost of running a vehicle in the UK is significantly higher than in North America. I have had my C 63 for seven years and my cost per month (not including purchase price) has been significantly lower than yours and that includes insurance and gasoline. You are very brave as is anyone in the UK to own a C 63.

      Probably because of all the maintenance he did, he won't be doing that every year. If anything parts and labour for a MB are more expensive in the US than in the UK. It's the tax and fuel that gets you.

    I hv a C63s , I know it’s a luxury and it deserves to be treated well and looking after it is 100% the correct thing to do. It is costly but it gives me the best smiles per gallon . Incidentally I hv average 38.6 miles per gallon on a 360 mile journey but in general I’m getting between 22-28mpg. I drive it carefully but I do throttle it as well when safe to do so. The W204 C63 is a great GT car, an M3 would leave it in chassis terms, but that 6.2 V8 is immense, and is a better engine, than anything the 3 & 4 series BMW M can muster.
    Running costs are very high, I get between 11 to 14mpg round town.
    On a Run its about 27mpg, with a very light foot, the most ive got to a full tank, is 260miles. And the least was 170miles, which is £105 a tank, and Super only!
    I drive everywhere in Comfort, SP+ just makes you drive fast, and its always straining at the lead to go, which is bad, because it's to fast for UK roads.
    Performance is strong, Ive reeled in a 600cc bike from the traffic lights, I didnt gain on him until past 100mph, but he was only about 3 car lengths in front from the lights.
    More than fast enough for anyone, and the noise never gets boring.😎

    70 pounds per hour for labor? How is that possible? That’s only $86 (US dollars). VW labor rate is a lot cheaper than Mercedes, but in the Seattle area, VW labor is $193/hour.

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s very interesting, it could be because the USA is a much wealthier country than the UK. Just look at the difference between the average salaries. The national average salary is only £34,900 ($43,075) before tax. The UK average house price is £302,000 ($372,852).

    • @tedjohnson64
      @tedjohnson64 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CarThought That's a very insightful observation! I'd always thought of the UK as being more expensive, but I never actually looked at useful measures (salary, home price) to normalize the two. So I did a little experiment...
      Experiment results: turns out there's about a 3x multiplier (home prices, household income) b/n the UK and the USA (details below). I called a Mercedes dealer in Seattle and they quoted me $285/hour labor rate. Dividing by 3 (to normalize for UK vs USA) yields £95/hr labor rate. So a bit above your £70/hr labor rate estimate, but not a huge difference.
      More details: in Washington state, salaries and home prices vary widely (farmers in eastern WA, vs tech industry in the Seattle area), so if we just look at the Seattle area, the median home price is $850,000 (source: www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/King-County_WA/overview). And the median household income is $99,000 (as of 2020, per kingcounty.gov/en/legacy/independent/forecasting/king-county-economy-status/king-county-economic-indicators/household-income). So basically 3x higher in the US (vs UK) for both home price and household income.
      To find the AMG labor rate at a Mercedes dealer, I called Mercedes of Seattle's service department. They said that the labor rate depended on the model, the type of repair, and required a VIN. So I found a 2018 C63 S for sale on autotrader.com, and gave them that VIN, and asked for a quote for doing pads and rotors for the front brakes. Result $4,084 for parts (!), because the rotors are ceramic. And $570 for 2 hours of labor. Which means $285/hr for labor.
      To convert that $285/hr labor rate into UK prices, we divide by 3: $285/3 = £95
      Thanks for giving me the idea for this experiment, it was quite fun!
      BTW, the 2018 AMG C63 I used the VIN from is here: www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicle/712781457?listingType=USED&makeCode=MB&modelCode=C63AMG&newSearch=true&numRecords=25&referrer=%2Fcars-for-sale%2Fmercedes-benz%2Fc-63-amg%2Fs&sortBy=relevance&trimCode=C63AMG%7CS&zip=98004&clickType=supplemental

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it’s great to say, and in practice I think it really depends on how much value you put on the V8 experience. I also think it largely depends on which country you live in (aka fuel prices) right now for premium in the UK it’s about $8.93/gallon.
      If you were daily driving a C63 in the UK it’s about the same as running a small apartment each month, apart from the apartment will be increasing in value much faster than the car.
      No matter whether you’re bothered about costs or not.. it’s not the wisest decision to own one here (if you actually want to use it all the time).

      @@CarThought in my personal opinion and with the experience of owning one I think is a luxury car that can be use as a daily drive but is too expensive for that I was spending nearly £50 a week just in petrol and not doing long miles in comfort mode i still have it and I love it but currently I am using it only average 4k miles per year as I have a business van so is mainly my weekend car so is great for that. Is a expensive car to run and I think is the reason not many people keep it for long I was going to sell it but after see the new c63s i thought I will keep it I think you made a mistake selling yours as that coupe model will be a future classic and will be keep value . I have a white c63s coupe tune and with downpipes and is eu unrestricted as it is a 2016 model so loud not far from w204 except when in in race mode i think sound beast .I am planning to keep it as won’t be anymore c63s v8 .

    £80 for tracking...

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not sure if that’s cheap or expensive for you? The term ‘Alignment’ or ‘tracking’ is used excessively everywhere. And typically only refers to adjustment of toe in/out. I usually go for 4 wheel geometry, particularly on my old MX5 (roughly £120, with corner weighting) which adjusts caster, camber and thrust angle (if the car has capability for it). Most garages aren’t competent to perform a full geometry adjustment in the UK (even if they have the correct equipment for it). Just don’t get confused between adjusting your ‘tracking’ at Halfords for £40, and a full geometry set up 👍

    • @RyanKingLogue
