    Had mine a few weeks now and put about 1400 miles on it, 300-350 miles per tank and if I had kids I would sell them to fuel it, can't stop driving it. Love it.

    Great video. Tells me that the cost of running a vehicle in the UK is significantly higher than in North America. I have had my C 63 for seven years and my cost per month (not including purchase price) has been significantly lower than yours and that includes insurance and gasoline. You are very brave as is anyone in the UK to own a C 63.

      Probably because of all the maintenance he did, he won't be doing that every year. If anything parts and labour for a MB are more expensive in the US than in the UK. It's the tax and fuel that gets you.

    I hv a C63s , I know it’s a luxury and it deserves to be treated well and looking after it is 100% the correct thing to do. It is costly but it gives me the best smiles per gallon . Incidentally I hv average 38.6 miles per gallon on a 360 mile journey but in general I’m getting between 22-28mpg. I drive it carefully but I do throttle it as well when safe to do so. I think it’s brilliant, my company car is a ID3 so very efficient miles but zero smiles .

    1 year, 3,500 miles is just simply not enough to get an accurate sample of the cost to own a hipo German car. You could just as well have a $5,000 repair as you could spend nothing but simple maintenance. It’s a crapshoot. Really need to average over 3-5 years and 30k-50k miles for true cost to own.

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I somewhat agree. My experience seems to be quite a typical one though. Going through my vehicles 9 years of service history, I would say my costs are on par with all of the other years. Respraying entire bumper because of a small scratch is crazy my man. You definitely couldve saved a lot more money on suspension noise issue, power steering fluid etc. I bet you can get it under 500 pounds per year just for servicing. Here, insurance is mental theyre not charging you for your age/driver profile etc but rather purely engine size and power so for example a 2L engine would annually cost 300-400 eur depending on power and year of production but as soon as you get to 3.0L you pay over 1k eur for insurance... That 6.2L engine would probably be around 1k eur just for insurance here.

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s very interesting, it could be because the USA is a much wealthier country than the UK. Just look at the difference between the average salaries. The national average salary is only £34,900 ($43,075) before tax. The UK average house price is £302,000 ($372,852).

    • @tedjohnson64
      @tedjohnson64 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CarThought That's a very insightful observation! I'd always thought of the UK as being more expensive, but I never actually looked at useful measures (salary, home price) to normalize the two. So I did a little experiment...
      Experiment results: turns out there's about a 3x multiplier (home prices, household income) b/n the UK and the USA (details below). I called a Mercedes dealer in Seattle and they quoted me $285/hour labor rate. Dividing by 3 (to normalize for UK vs USA) yields £95/hr labor rate. So a bit above your £70/hr labor rate estimate, but not a huge difference.
      More details: in Washington state, salaries and home prices vary widely (farmers in eastern WA, vs tech industry in the Seattle area), so if we just look at the Seattle area, the median home price is $850,000 (source: www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/King-County_WA/overview). And the median household income is $99,000 (as of 2020, per kingcounty.gov/en/legacy/independent/forecasting/king-county-economy-status/king-county-economic-indicators/household-income). So basically 3x higher in the US (vs UK) for both home price and household income.
      To find the AMG labor rate at a Mercedes dealer, I called Mercedes of Seattle's service department. They said that the labor rate depended on the model, the type of repair, and required a VIN. So I found a 2018 C63 S for sale on autotrader.com, and gave them that VIN, and asked for a quote for doing pads and rotors for the front brakes. Result $4,084 for parts (!), because the rotors are ceramic. And $570 for 2 hours of labor. Which means $285/hr for labor.
      To convert that $285/hr labor rate into UK prices, we divide by 3: $285/3 = £95
      Thanks for giving me the idea for this experiment, it was quite fun!
      BTW, the 2018 AMG C63 I used the VIN from is here: www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicle/712781457?listingType=USED&makeCode=MB&modelCode=C63AMG&newSearch=true&numRecords=25&referrer=%2Fcars-for-sale%2Fmercedes-benz%2Fc-63-amg%2Fs&sortBy=relevance&trimCode=C63AMG%7CS&zip=98004&clickType=supplemental

      @@CarThought (Resubmitting, as my original reply disappeared. Perhaps due to the source URL's I added for the cost info? I've deleted them now) That's a very insightful observation, as I'd always thought of the UK as being more expensive, or at least equally expensive. However I never actually looked at the (salary, home price) to normalize vs. the US prices. So I did a little experiment to see if I could make sense of the mechanic labor price disparity.
      Experiment results: turns out there's about a 3x multiplier (home prices, household income) b/n the UK and the USA (details below). Mercedes parts costs in Australia means that you have to sell a kidney. It's cheaper to buy from FCPEuro in Connecticut including freight. Where the value is over $999 you pay VAT (GST here) and Duty and even adding that it is still cheaper than Mercedes here in Perth. The Mercedes tax is a thing here.

    Cheap ! Very affordable in the UK
    In Taiwan, it's 2020 pounds a year just on taxes alone.
    Insurance would run you 200 quids a year depending on your options, but that's just third party liabilities.
    Which does not cover your own car if it gets damaged, a proper full coverage would run you 600 quids a year minimum.
    Gas prices on 98 Octane is about 79 pences per liter.
    Garage labor is better here, at around 40 quids per hour, parts price are on par globally.

    £80 for tracking...

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not sure if that’s cheap or expensive for you? The term ‘Alignment’ or ‘tracking’ is used excessively everywhere. And typically only refers to adjustment of toe in/out. I usually go for 4 wheel geometry, particularly on my old MX5 (roughly £120, with corner weighting) which adjusts caster, camber and thrust angle (if the car has capability for it). Most garages aren’t competent to perform a full geometry adjustment in the UK (even if they have the correct equipment for it). Just don’t get confused between adjusting your ‘tracking’ at Halfords for £40, and a full geometry set up 👍

      I think it’s great to say, and in practice I think it really depends on how much value you put on the V8 experience. I also think it largely depends on which country you live in (aka fuel prices) right now for premium in the UK it’s about $8.93/gallon.
      If you were daily driving a C63 in the UK it’s about the same as running a small apartment each month, apart from the apartment will be increasing in value much faster than the car.
