  • Many dogs out there lack focus and engagement with their humans. This dog Sarge went from being one of the most distracted disengaged dogs to one of the most focused. Both the owner and I were shocked how much he transformed during board and train. This is just a sneak peak into some of the methods we use to shape better behaviors.

    I've never read a book so fast! th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU Learning about his dogs and experiences was just the icing on the cake - bed this book through and through. We're working with our new pup and Brandon's advise was just what I needed. Wish he'd just come and train for me haha but it's good for us and happy to have this new set of tools to use on our pup.

    I have an eight-week-old GSD female who is a wild child. She is so food driven that she won't look me in the eyes, no matter what I try to do, but is always watching my treat hand. Her attention span is about five seconds, and if she is outside forget about her coming when she is called. She has two speeds: full blast and sleep.

    It always amazes me the lessons within the lessons. Your ability to breakdown and simplify things/ explain behaviors, expectations, and what your trying to accomplish while training is truly master class. To become really good anything you have to master the basics. Your breakdown of what your trying to accomplish to the basics provides the insights how to set a path to succeed in training.
    Thanks so much!!

      At around seven or eight months a lot of dogs kind of get into a stupid stage. I think it's their hormones. But they will tend to lose focus and forget things that you've trained them. I've heard that eight months is the very popular age for dogs to get turned into the Humane Society. Friend of mine, a professional dog trainer, told me not to worry too much about the dog at seven and eight months because they turn stupid for a little while. Your dog was just growing up.

  • @PAULTHEAV8R

    We now have our first non-hunting dog, a German Shepherd. She's been with us for 9 days. The breeder already had her sitting on command w/treat reward and laying down (down command) and also crate/kennel command. All of which she's doing very well and we've been continuing that training w/treat reward. At 15 weeks she's very sloppy on other commands like here and sit/stay, she's still a puppy. In the past I've had hunting dogs, Labrador Retrievers. At 6-months I would begin e-collar training with only the buzzer for correction until 9-months and then the serious training would be in full swing, including shock correction. By a year those dogs could hunt with the best of them. This is our first Shepard and frankly, I'm in uncharted waters. We were behind the curve just a little bit by not finding her until she was already 14-weeks so she had probably a little longer adjustment time, but she's getting there. At what age do you introduce the e-collar on a Shepherd? And do you use a break-in period, like I have in the past, of a couple 3 months, for the dog to adjust to a collar that vibrates and makes noise?

    Perfect description of a GS. I've had my boy since 3 months now he's 2 and he's left the house about 5 times. He chases cats and God knows what else but he always returns about 24 hours later after his binger and plops down and passes out like a college student after a hard weekend lol. He's a lot better lately and sticks around since I've done more training with him because the last time his paws got hurt somehow pretty bad but he fully recovered.

    I found this channel when my adopted dog suddenly realized that she was a pitbull right around the same time we learned that's what she actually was. (Her adoption papers said she was something else entirely and we had to do a DNA test to figure out what she really was to better understand her and her needs) Anyway, thanks to this teaching series we learned what tools we needed and how to use them to train our Luna not to attack strangers as she walks down the street anymore or to chase delivery people when they step on our porch. This has helped to make our lives much easier and our dog a much better behaved pooch. We have plans to eventually adopt a GSD and we will use the same tools to train that dog as well but I will use them much sooner since I'll know much more before we bring our new family member home by then.

      @jessicagislason4855 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a coonhound out of Boat lines living in the suburbs. Coons are instinctively hunters you aren't going to have a ton of luck on reversing hunting skills, better to work with the skills they know, aka teach them to show interest in what you want. My girl loves skunks and possoms so we go on adventures tracking them down and getting pictures, as such she's learned to stop chasing cats and flipping out over dogs and people on bikes. Also a good idea to work them before they eat as they sometimes get lazy and decide to stop. Barnhunt, canicross and bikejorning or scent trials are all great ways to build obedience, commands, and bond while letting a hound be a hound.

    My dog takes about 2 or 3 seconds to lose focus. It's incredibly difficult because she's also high energy so she doesn't just wander off, she takes off and then notices she's far and gets excited and starts running fast in circles and well she's just a nightmare. I have to practice come several times every single day we go out. If I don't practice there will be regression immediately, within 3 days I will see it. She is 3.5 and I have had her since a puppy and I am exhausted. I am an experienced dog owner and there is something with this dog, she seems to genuinely be special needs and I try to remember that and be gentle and kind to her but she has a gold fish brain and it's very hard. I would like to not pay her unless she comes properly but I have to pay her for coming to me even when she flies by (every single f'n time) otherwise her recall within a couple days is so poor it is unsafe. When she does come she will have so much speed she goes another 15 feet before slowing down enough to come back and will do this 1 -3 times before finally coming to me to get the treat. I feel like the dog you have in this video that is so frustrating for you is about 10% of what I deal with. I have considered using an e-collar the way you are, for training, I think it might break through to her more than my voice when she is insane, do you think that could be true? And do you have a training video, or can recommend one, for e-collars?

    I understand each dog is different, but curious to know what your primer setting was for Gunny, and then what you bumped it up to after a couple reps and if he took his paws off the plate?

    I gotta say your channel is an invaluable resource, thank you for sharing all of these. I am a little overwhelmed and having some difficulty in navigating as you have so many videos. Pardon my ignorance, is there a reason you bring the food to your face becore giving it to the dog?

    I'm going to have to do this I have the same problem with the add and the fly by but she does about 2-3wide circles after the fly by. I have followed all your tips and methods and had amazing success with leash behavior and obedience using the prong. Even when doing recall on a long lead she is 100%. But off lead I struggle to regain focus and obedience. I have no issues with the e-collar it's my wife that thinks it's cruel and barbaric. Even our vet has tried to explain it to her that's it's a tool in the tool box and it's how the handler chooses to use it. With the prong when I can't get her attention back to me verbaly when she sees a squirrel or something the lightest tap brings her back and engaged. I really think an e-collar will be the correct tool for off lead work.

    If you call this ADD, not sure what sort of mental craziness would you call my dog. He is 100x worse and I am paying him for every look, yet he usually is so distracted that he does not care about food or toys. He does not care about rly significant corrections on prong caller either. I had a problem with an e-collar as even so tight that I cannot possibly slip a finger under it, the e-collar contacts were unreliable or inconsistent. I will shave off some fur and go your route. Thanks for the great video! I really appreciate the "no bullshit" trainers and there are not many of them on TH-cam, you sir are great exception! I just hope you read it :)

    I just got my service dpg prospect, a 12 week old working line GSD with wonderful drive and disposition, my only issue with her is lack of food motivation and focus, I know she's very young and im trying out a prong inside out to just get used to it, (im experienced with prongs) but i might switch to the prong side so she'll understand that its a correction. But based on this video I might consider e-collars!

      Check out our online courses at DIYK9.com We discuss lack of food drive and how to build it in "Obedience 101" which is all food luring, but our "Leashed" course can help when there's no food drive as well.

Sometimes she still tests my patience with it matter of fact. I do have to find different treats for reinforcing her recall this long weekend ❤

    My Belgian Malinois absolutely loves to fake stretch when I tell tim to do something and he doesn't want to do it. He's 6 months old, starting to be disobedient, talk back - officially hit his teenage phase 😂. He'll still absolutely work fabulous if there's food involved, but he used to work great hell even 3 weeks ago without food involved. I got myself a proper HS prong collar but he's just as ADHD as this dog. When we're playing outside and I call him he absolutely does thot top gun flyby 😂😂. It's fun when we're playing because he's on a long line and i want him to run, but it's a learned bad behavior that has to be corrected. I'm considering an ecollar but they're so expensive.

    My gsd pup is 14 weeks old. He’s starting to lose his focus on me as him and my collie became close friends. I need to step up the frequency of training him properly but being a full time business owner, it becomes easy to find excuses not to train the dog enough

    • @AmericanStandardK9
      @AmericanStandardK9  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Be very careful how much time you let your puppy spend with another dog especially without you there. It's impossible for you as a human to compete with another four-legged animal in terms of fun and engagement and interaction. It's okay for them to play a little bit here and there but if they spend 12 hours together and you only spend 30 minutes one-on-one with the dog then you cease to be that interesting for the life of the dog. In other words your dog is bonding with his pack which is the other dog. You will end up just being some guy that comes around and delivers food every once in awhile. I sometimes say that letting your puppy play with another dog is like letting them smoke crack. You then have a crack addict and is very hard to top the dopamine Rush that they get any other way than smoking the crack

      @@AmericanStandardK9 well that certainly just reinforced my thought! That’s the last thing I want to happen. I’ve been letting him out of the cage far more because he behaves but they do play a lot. Nobody has ever given me this but of info so thank you 👌🏻👌🏻 it astounds me how many dogs aren’t trained these days, don’t come when called at all.
