To Be Clear: Like many other dog breeds, German Shepherds are renowned for their tight relationships with their human families and their capacity to create strong bonds with their owners. Even though every dog is different and could have unique preferences and personalities, there are a few things that can affect a German Shepherd's decision regarding a "favorite person." In this video, we will talk about how German Shepherds choose their favorite person, and by the end of this video, you should know how to become your German Shepherd’s favorite person. Let’s get started.
Number 1: Quality time and attention.
Spending quality time with and giving attention to someone is one of the most important ways a German Shepherd can decide who their favorite person is. Dogs are social creatures that benefit greatly from affection and human contact. German Shepherds may develop a greater attachment to a person who spends a lot of time with them and provides them with ongoing care and attention. This could be a primary caregiver or a family member who routinely walks, plays, and does other things with them. This regular interaction forges a strong bond in the dog's mind and might help to cement the relationship between the person and the dog. Additionally, because that person tends to the dog's everyday requirements, the dog will recognize and trust them more.
    Number 2: Training and socialization.
Training and socialization play a significant role in how German Shepherds select their favorite person. A German Shepherd that has received proper training and socialization is more likely to feel secure and at ease around other individuals, which can make them more receptive and affectionate to a larger range of people. This is so because dogs learn to trust their handlers and know that they will keep them secure and comfortable during training. Additionally, socialization teaches them how to connect positively with various people and animals. A German Shepherd who has had proper training and socialization will be more adaptive to new people and settings, increasing their likelihood of developing strong bonds with other individuals. Additionally, socialization and training can assist German Shepherds in overcoming anxiety and insecurity, which can be obstacles to developing close relationships with people. For instance, a dog who feels uneasy around strangers or strange individuals may be less likely to develop a bond with a new person. However, the dog can learn to feel more at ease and confident in these circumstances through training and socialization, which may present opportunities for developing bonds with new individuals. In general, a German Shepherd's ability to select a favorite person can be greatly influenced by their training and socialization. With a larger range of people, it can assist the dog develop their trust and comfort, which can result in stronger, longer-lasting bonds.
    Number 3: Consistency.
Another essential factor that can affect a German Shepherd's decision on a favorite person is consistency. Dogs enjoy stability and routine, and they may select their favorite person depending on their interactions and activities with that person. For instance, a German Shepherd might bond more closely with someone who is in charge of their daily care, such as feeding and watering them. The dog may come to regard this person as their favorite because they relate them to the reliability of having their needs handled on a daily basis. A dog may develop a stronger bond with a particular human if they share a regular schedule of walks, playing, and training sessions because they have developed a feeling of predictability. The dog experiences comfort and security as a result, which deepens their attachment with that human.
Number 4: Sense of smell and pheromones.
A German Shepherd can also select their favorite person by using their sense of smell and pheromones. Dogs' keen sense of smell can be very important in their social interactions and emotional connections. They might develop a preference for someone who smells better or is more recognizable to them. An individual who wears a particular scent that the dog finds comforting or familiar, such as a certain cologne or perfume or even the scent of their laundry detergent, for instance, may have a greater bond with their dog. Dogs might also be more drawn to a person who shares their owner's pheromones and body chemistry. The dog is drawn to this instinctively rather than making a deliberate choice. With the person they are attracted to, this type of attraction can help forge stronger bonds.

One thing you left out is the GSD's strong need for having a purpose/job. GSD's will often form a strong bond with the person with which they do their job, even if that person isn't responsible for its care or play . I have a very disabled wife and our dogs understand their job is to keep her company, despite this neither obtaining food or any physical activity. After a walk, play or whatever, they always return to the room she is in and check in with her. When they want to go outside, want food or whatever, they come find me....but quickly return to my wife once their immediate need is satisfied. They understand that being a companion to her is their primary job, despite her inability to do much for them from her hospital bed.

I was driving down a semi rural road and a German Shepherd ran out onto the road. By the time I stopped, I was quite a bit past and I didn’t feel it was safe to back up the hilly curving road. Because it was divided I had to drive a bit both directions to get back to where I saw her. I stopped and saw her on a bluff above the road along with a white dog, possibly a lab mix. When I got out of the car, the GSD immediately came down to me and got into my car. She was emaciated, massive ear infections and her ears were ragged with the cartilage broken on one ear so it flopped. She was a loyal dog to the end and had a very sweet but goofy personality. My female Siberian Husky was dominant and when we adopted other strays, she would intervene to defend the Husky. She had a complete checkup and was healthy but 6 months later she was filled with cancer. I still miss her.

I became my family’s German shepherd’s favorite person because I rescued him twice from life threatening situations. I had that dog’s total trust. He would do anything I told him to do and wasn’t afraid to jump anyone or any animal he thought was a threat. Best dog I ever had.

These beautiful dogs definitely choose their favourite person. One day I stood in a car park of about 30 people who were all talking. My GSD puppy at the time picked out my voice when I started to talk and looked for me. When Bear eventually saw me it was like I had been away for 10 years 😂 I miss him terribly and these dogs deserve more love and respect ✊

A strong word of advice. Never allow someone who is meeting your GSD for the first time, to stare into their eyes. Even the nicest GSD may feel threatened because trust has not been established. I’ve had several shepherds and two of them ended up biting the person doing the staring. I’ve also seen this recommendation in other videos about GSD’s.

My GSD is the best pet I have ever had in my life. He’s smart, loving, well trained and gentle with all other animals. He was given up by someone who had an aggressive French bull dog that didn’t like him. I don’t know how anyone could give up the most beautiful loving animal ever ….but if you can’t give them time, training and patience then find someone who will. I didn’t want a GSD originally as I’d heard negative things about them but I am truly so blessed he his in my life.

My German Shepherd ... When others tried to play fetch with him, the emphasis on tried. They threw the ball and he brought it back to me.. We had a great band together for almost 11,5 years. I miss him dearly, life's just not the same anymore. Without both my dogs, I also had a Golden retriever. We're quite a team together, and always together.

I fed my German Shepard exclusively for the first 3+ years of his life, and during university would feed him when I was home and took him on long walks. Also if I drove anywhere, 90% of the time he came with me. Then when I wasn’t home it was a mission to get him to eat, but he finally got used to my mum feeding him, and he’d go on car rides with her. Whenever I came home from university, he’d know I was being picked up from the train station and would go nuts! He’d also play fetch properly with me. Ironically, he was bought for my dad…..though my dad was home most of the time with him and was the one who walked him most and cleaned up his poop so it depended on the time of day who was my dog’s favourite person!

As someone who has been owned by nine GSD's (as has my wife, who also spent 25 years working for the largest guide dog training facility in North America and worked with dozens of teams using GSD's) one thing that I can say is that, as the video explains, Shepherds are extremely activity driven and will form their bond primarily along those lines, BUT it is very common for them to share their allegiance equally or nearly so within two or more members of their den. Dogs by nature (GSD's especially so) are "denning" animals and any members of a household will become their den. Interestingly, members of their den don't even need to live under the same roof. Family, close friends and basically anybody who their primary den-mates hold close relationships with and are in frequent proximity with, are considered part of the gang.
When it comes to exclusivity however, that becomes a much grayer area. Playtime, feeding or just sheer amount of time spent together can't always determine your Shepherd's favored companion. My wife's (who is blind) first Guide Dog, a female black & tan, was fiercely devoted to her but she always claimed that Rainey loved me more and was really "my" dog. I vehemently disagreed, but when she retired (early at 9 y/o), it became very apparent that she was correct, with Rainey spending her many retirement years very dutifully attached to me. Her next Shepherd Guide was also devoted to Kim but we could see that throughout her 15 year life, she split her love right down the middle between us.
The bottom line is, give them love, attention and care, and they will pay you back with uncountable interest. They do indeed choose their people, but always remember that Shepherds can be inveterate hoarders, and that includes people.

Love that puppy has bonded, As a G.S. fan, we have 2 G.S.D.plus puppies. They are high maintenance and deserve the best. All they want is to be around their families and will pick their favorite person, intelligence plus. They love you so and gaze into one's eyes with admiration. Consider one's decision carefully as they become so attached. G.S D will become morose if moved from pillar to post. Stability love and loyalty are their state of grace. Good to hear another fan of these intrepid canines.

My GSD was sick for the first 18 months of her life, making it very difficult to get her properly socialized. She's not over reactive and unfriendly, but she struggles with other dogs and people whom she has not met before. We do our best to overcome this by doing controlled introductions.

I don't know what her future will be like but I find out more in July after a cardiologist appt. I posted a few shorts videos of her on my page.

    Every word is correct here.
I raised one male "Thor" from puppyhood, and a year-old female "Elke" initially for breeding, but mostly as great pets. The GSD is an amazing, very trainable, most protective family pet there is.
After the divorce, my ex kept a GSD "Titan" for our son. Then my sister owned him. When I lived with her, you could tell that THAT dog treated me like I was my son. There was a bond that was unmistakable.

As i was in my teens we had 2 gs as as a family. My mother fed them, but they listened only to me giving orders . I think they respect clarity and authority more. They choose their leader based on inner sense if leadership and order. I noticed they were confused by the way my mother would talk them into doing something, and would end up not doing what she wanted. I would give them a short order and they would execute it immediately 😁

I'm a long time GSD owner. And, I've owned dogs (different breeds for close to 35 yrs). You want to know what causes a German Shepherd (GSD) to bond with someone? When that someone shows the GSD that they honestly love it. And that goes w/any dog. Think about it -- you get a dog. How many times/day do you talk to it, pet it, play w/it? I have four dogs, and my hands are constantly on them. I walk past them, I pet them. I'm near the "cookie" jar, they get a treat. I talk to them. Pick up a scattered toy and throw it to them. Then, if possible, I take the for rides in the car, go to stores that allow dogs, etc. THAT"s how your dog KNOWS you love them.

All I can say, six minutes later, is DUH! Anyone who actually didn't know everything in this video is NOT qualified to have a German Shepherd! I appreciate the effort, but this may just encourage unqualified people to go get a GSD. This is why GSDs end up in shelters or rescues, and short of the owner's death, this should NEVER happen. GSDs deserve better.

    All very true.
However, in general, male GSDs tend to bond with an Alfa Male, or the Man of the House, while female GSDs tend to bond with a Woman, more specifically, the Mother of the Family.

@@denisedecker7330 at a minimum dogs have to get their shots, have to take their heartworm medicine, and have to have accommodations so they don't get eaten up by insects over the summer. They like to explore, and can get into all kinds of eventual trouble doing that. Food expense for each dog cost about $90 every 3 months. They make super friends, but they do come with expenses.

    • @denisedecker7330
      @denisedecker7330 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@davidh7799 That is one of the costs that I incur... Is a test for heartworm every 6 months. It takes 6 months for the larvae that are in the blood to become an actual worm. If my dog's ever test positive then the treatment is the same as the preventative.
I'm not going to randomly give my dog's poison. I wouldn't take something orally that would only kill something that bit me. The reality is the mosquito, flea, or tick has already injected anything that they have into the animal's blood to be killed by a pesticide that you give your dog orally.
I use rose geranium essential oils for ticks. I usually dilute it with water and spray it on my dogs along with citronella and neem. That covers everything. I went on a 2-hour hike with my dogs this summer... They were clear when I got home but I had two ticks on the back of my neck. I've never had one pick up a tick with the spray I is.
I only vaccinate puppies. I use a live parvovirus because it overrides mom's immunity and then I don't have to guess if the shots effective... neopar. I also use a live ditemper virus.
I mean as a child I had a set of polio shots. I have never revaxinated myself. I see no reason to vaccinate my dogs if they've already achieved immunity either.

@@denisedecker7330 good post. Obviously you know a thing or two about keeping your friends. I'll only add that rabies vaccines are required by law. Incidentally, I'm very careful about ticks. I was infected by Rocky mountain spotted fever, had a 2-week hospital stay, and almost died.

@@davidh7799 I got a waiver for the rabies vaccine. In California if your vet feels that your dog is too weak or had a reaction or and their opinion it would not promote good health a veterinarian can waive that requirement if they have had at least one rabies vaccine.
I have a very progressive vet that is amenable.

I have a gsd. I hate my dog. I wouldn't recommend anyone getting one. They are not as smart as they say. Hight maintenance and and expensive because they need constant vet care. Worse mistake I made other then getting married. Had mine since 3 mo old almost 2 yrs now. Had other dogs. This one is the worst. I do love my dog but it's been a long hard road...

    • @martawilson6177
      @martawilson6177 ปีที่แล้ว

If you hate your dog you shouldn't have it. Find a home where it will be loved and not hated just because it's not as smart as you thought it would be. Your dog doesn't deserve your hate. You sound like a miserable person anyway. Go hate in something that can defend itself instead of an innocent animal.
