Can we also take a moment to applaud the owner for being so open and understanding that SHE is the one that needed this training? she is wonderful, best of luck to her & Tigger!

Hardcore game and working line dogs often aren't the best for new handlers with children and it could have disastrous consequences. I'm glad she's getting the help she needs and hope she continues training him.

I agree. It hurts me when Tom tells the owners that they have a really shitty relationship w their dog, and is the reason for the problems. I think the dog deserves so much credit for his progress in a high stress environment. It took me almost a year to get my then 8month old AB rescue to be non reactive while out & obey recall when other dogs are in her sights. Patience & positive praise have been the key for our success. She's still super protective when strangers come into our back yard & only realizes that they're not a threat if I hug them {much to the relief & amazement of various workmen} lol. With commitment & love I've truly found my best friend & love her with all my heart ❤️
Owner ASKING him to heel and sit - rather than commanding him. Whew - no wonder... Great training video. She started to get better, yet needs lots of coaching. No room for error with that guy!
I admire the owner for taking on a project like Tigger. Many would have given up. She has a lot of work ahead of her and I thought she received the feedback well. It’s a lot to take in and think about in the moment.

Thank you for correcting Tigger's owner at 15:27. That patience and slow building up of skills is SO important, especially for reactive dogs. With our reactive dog, training was like this: sit inside the house, sit inside with the tv on, sit inside when someone is outside talking, sit inside when someone is outside talking and the door starts to open, sit inside while someone outside walks by the open door.... I think you get the idea. It was like that with every skill. I hope Tigger's owner gets that point now after your classes, and good on her for trying to learn and do right by her dog.
You have the ability to recognize discomfort, lack of discipline, fear, and frustration in both dogs & humans. You also are 100% ok calling them out and holding them accountable. Excelent trainer! I can see why both dogs and humans trust you to lead them 💙
Have you ever had to suggest to an owner that their dog may not be right for them? Hope she continues to improve and Tigger gets the leadership he needs!!!
Its tough when there is a strong willed dog, and a meek owner. Its hard to explain the problem is the owner not being able to control the dog. It's a lot like horsemanship. Hopefully she learns and improves in her handling of her dog. I wish her luck.
Man, I'm so glad to see you have reasonable boundaries with the dog at first instead of adding more stressors before they were ready. A lot of trainers have the mentality that they are boss and really make dogs severely uncomfortable.
some heros don't wear capes, they wear NBD merchandise lol! you're such a blessing to all of us Tom, I hope you know even half of the impact you've had on myself and my apbt Eddie price Jr 🥰
Perfect video! Training the owner is the majority of what I do, just like Tom. I've learned countless ways to remind people to stop saying the dog's name a million times and the commands a million times. And I'm always cognizant that what comes naturally for me, for Tom and for other trainers doesn't come naturally for many of my clients. 1:1 with a dog is easy. Me with the owner(s) is more work. I loved the first time this dog checked in with Tom. I loved the first time the dog relaxed into a down (not just crouch down with his feet under him and loaded to go). I hope this owner can continue practicing what she learned. If she does, she'll see some amazing results in my opinion. Kudos for her to realize that the prior trainers messed up and she needed Tom to fix things.
Great comment Ma'am. It's refreshing to see someone articulate in writing that they know what they're taking about when it comes to dog training. I've had the pleasure of getting to know a few people who have done training as a source of income and the two I know the best told me the same thing, the most difficult part of training client's dogs is the clients themselves. Training dogs isn't a profession of mine but I do/have helped people with their Dogs and I absolutely agree that the owners are more difficult to work with than the dogs. 😄
You read my mind with your first paragraph 😄! As a trainer, I try to help people learn how to think how their dogs think, so they can communicate better. The people who realize that I'm training THEM to train their dogs are the ones who succeed.
This is exactly how the 2 year old Akita I had a couple weeks ago was. Beautifully done and well taught. It was good to see Tom going into “drama mode” when he showcased pleading with a dog. Loved it lol dropping to the knees was a nice touch and the clients reaction was terrific.
I learned about appeasement & the rule of 3s after my adoption. I have learned so much from having a reactive dog, that appeared to be super sweet at adoption.
I‘ve been watching your videos for years now and i don‘t even have a dog! I am a highschool teacher and I learned so much from these videos, about being a clear and calm leader. Thank you so much.
This makes me think of my oldest German shepherd. He is like this with everybody and other dogs, but the handful of people and dogs he knows and trusts. I wish I had someone like this to work with, so other people could see how sweet and loving he really is.
I believe you can achieve whatever you want from your dog, it's just going to take plenty of time, effort, and as I tell everyone I can, the #1 thing in dog training is patience. Patience for your Dog, Yourself, and eveyone else involved in the process. Given that you watched this video, that's a great start. Mr. Davis is a very acute man and that is PARAMOUNT when it comes to dog training. I could go deep-down the rabbit hole with you about the process but I'll make some simple suggestions, watch his videos and legitimately take notes. You'll see the formula within a few videos. My next suggestion is joining the online network he mentions in his videos. Although I'm not a member and have no knowledge of it, other than the fact that it exists, I would say it's an invaluable resource if you are willing to make the effort in helping your GSD be the dog you would like it to be. I don't mean this to come across as an insult but the slogan of his company, "No Bad Dogs," is demonstrated in every one of his videos of I've seen. The dogs aren't the problem, the owners are. There's another VERY well known trainer that has the same same slogan but in different words. "I rehabilitate dogs, I train people."- Cesar Milan Dog training is psychology. Some call it conditioning, some call it behavior modification. Between trainers the methods and terminology may differ but to achieve the desired results there are things that will be similar. I'll end it with that and I wish you the best.
Tom's training can be summed up in one very important message that he uses ALL the time. "Hold the dog accountable for making a bad decision"!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing seeing Tiggers progress so far from your help in such a short time! Thank you again for all your videos, they’ve been super helpful for our Husky as well! 🙏
Amazing video. I feel like anyone with a dog who has behavior issues probably faces the same issues as this owner a lot. We feel like we ARE doing the commands and corrections, but in the end we need someone to watch us and train us on what to react to and how to best react and lead.
what a great owner, way to own what you did/are doing wrong and start fresh with your dog! i hope tigger will live a long happy life with his family xx
I applaud her for realizing she needed the help for this dog. He is alot of dog and he made good progress but tons more is needed. Keep up the great work.
This has got to be my favorite video yet! The owner was gracious, understanding and accepting of not only taking direction for the dog, but for herself as well. When training, is it a transaction between dog and owner that has to work. The fact that it was brought home that this is only the beginning of the training, and that just because the dog does it a few times, does not mean perfection is there. Lots of work still to be done! Love it! Thank you so very much!!
The fact that the he called the huge distance between Tigger and his dog while training CLOSE gives me a lot of hope for my reactive dog. Thank you so much for all the education
You helped Tigger's parent! I've seen this time and time again, and each time it fell back on how much that parent understood the training so the dog could be helped! She has to stay on her game with Tigger! He's strong in every way! She was willing to do whatever it took to train him! I wish her all the best! My comments are one year later! I hope all is well with them both!
I'm so glad to see this video. For the first time, I'm experiencing a dog similar that just does not like me! This is very helpful. Thank you very much!
I love this video and how Tom gradually won the dog over with his precise methods. The owner had trouble realising that she was the problem. But I think she was up to it
I really am enjoying your videos. I am a 59 year old female. Last summer I had a stroke. I have an 8 year old neutered male Australian Shepherd who is really dog reactive. I’m currently am walking him daily in my driveway on a daily basis to get him some exercise. I am afraid to walk him because of his reactivity. I am beginning to feel a little bit better about my ability to maintain control. Before my stoke we were walking about 2 miles daily. He isn’t terribly reactive to people, except for the mailman. I spent a lot of money for a year’s training, but that company went out of business. He was able to attend group classes without too much reactivity.
That’s me with my German Shepherd, actually I think mine is worse. My heart goes out to her, it’s so so much work. Learning how to lead and handle our dogs, is not only a necessity for our dogs sake and everyone around us, but a priceless transferable life skill for us as a person.
The compassion and understanding of the dog is absolutely amazing, best trainer in the world as far as im concerned. Been watching Tom since the day we brought our new pitbull puppy home, has helped so much.. also want to mention the owner of that pitbull, the fact shes getting toms advice shows true love of that pup.. most people just give up and get rid of or put the dog down .. kudos to her
All of us who 'get it', and who are nodding along while Tom explains, are like "Why aren't the owners 'getting it?'" We forget sometimes that our instincts are better and we have more experience than your average dog owner. I applaud this woman for making multiple efforts and her commitment to getting the best help possible for her dog rather than just abandoning it.
Thankyou for saving these dogs' lives by training their owners in how to help them properly. I only started looking at your channel today and one thing stands out, there are ineffectual and yes dangerous dog trainers out there. Ugh, dog owners waste their time and money and some probably end up rehousing the dog, perpetuating or escalating the dogs behaviour and where will that dog end up? It's not only the owners who need training...some of the dog trainers need it too.
What a great video. The owner thought she could handle her dog and the dog was the problem, but gradually, with the help from Tom the dog started to improve. Thanks a lot.
Hay Tom. my name is Arye, a dog trainer in Israel for almost 30 years, military, police, live-stock protection dogs & herding. I'm trying to make my way into the pet dog world. I like the way you communicate with the owners. I struggle with that, especially with an opinionated owners. I don't see any content on this topic any where. It will be awesome if you do something like that. thanks
I love seeing progress you make for these dogs! It's so important even just to show that dogs that people think are a lost cause can be helped. Dogs can't tell us how they feel but dogs that people give up on must experience so much pain and confusion. Every dog rescued through behavior therapy like this is a saved life
Wowzzza! Really difficult case. A lot of progress was made. I'm concerned about the owner truly understanding her role in the process, and being able to make the necessary changes for long term success. She certainly came to the right trainer! I commend your commitment to helping both the owner and the dog, Tom! This would make an interesting case for a follow up video. I really hope they are successful!
I'm a new subscriber and am so grateful for your channel! My adopted dog was abused and neglected and has been leash reactive for majority of the time I've had him. It got worse during COVID when we spent all day everyday together. I've applied some of your basic foundational training techniques (this video has been specifically helpful) and applied them which is showing positive progress in the last couple weeks. Thank you so much for the work you do and for not giving up on animals who are misunderstood. 🙏❤️☀️🦋
Hot dogs across the room for an hour 😳, sorry, that made me laugh out loud when she said that. The best thing about Tom is how honest he is with the owner and how he explains everything. There is so much in this video, a couple of things I really noticed that I do and need to adjust with my own tone. Loved it.
I wish I lived in America. My 3yo male AmStaff is very much like this, and would LOVE a training session with you, Tom. I will be studying this video and practicing these moves with my boy. Fingers crossed, and keep up the good work, Tom!
I really Love what you do. I find there are few dog trainers I like but you are one of my top faves. I love how respectful you are with your clients and their dogs. Loved watching Tigger progress! Kudos to Tom for being willing to work with a dog that many trainers would not even go near. So hoping his owner continues her progress as a trainer too. I wish we could watch how they continue their training!
Thank you so much for these videos, they r life changing for Zoey and I ! I rescued Zoey 2 yrs ago and she is perfect but she was never socialized, and very leash reactive. I cant even take her for walks rite now due 2 a medical condition I have. But I have learned so much and I apply what I learned in our everyday routine and I see a difference !!! So thanks again!!! Oh and she is a pit bull !!!
This is such a good video, showing how important tone of voice is. Praise tone, assertive tone for do smtg and obey, and correction tone + timely move like a pop. Timing and tone are everything. I still haven’t gotten that right. When Tom does it, it looks so easy…
I really enjoy these videos. I have a friend , she is an OTR driver and she has recently gotten a Gorgeous German shepherd. She claims she used to raise and train these dogs back in her youth. When she calls and talks with me on almost a nightly bases she generally has to yell at the dog to stop barking or get out of her lap. She has also claimed she had trained her dogs with the Keater method(?) Not sure I spelled that correctly , and as well said it's an d method not very many have heard or remember. But I have shared many of your videos with her and she says she has tried to work with him(Gizzard, aka Gizmo) , but she LACKS the follow through. I told her next time she is in she and I will work him by using your videos so she can better handle him instead of the other way around. This woman is 66yrs old and been driving off and on for 20 some years. I know now I have to TRAIN her in order for her to follow through with her dog. Thank you so much Tom.
I also have a terrier who is reactive and feel just how this person does, I just found your channel and looking forward to learn and try some of these things with him.
I teared up watching Tom work with Tigger, knowing that Tom could have changed the trajectory of Tigger's life if he'd met him MUCH earlier. Tigger seems like the sum of many, many people's bad decisions, and consequently, HE has become a living-breathing-biting bad decision on four legs. I fear this poor dog will harm someone if he is not rehomed to a more well-trained, assertive & CONSISTENT person. Sometimes love is not enough to "fix" a problem like this behavior disaster. Much love & respect for Tom💗, because HE SAVES LIVES.
I’ve encountered dogs like this when I’m out walking my dog. It’s terrifying when you know an owner has no control over a power house dog. Kudos to the owner for doing something about it. Tom, you are fantastic with holding owners accountable.
Thank you so much for doing this. I'm always amazed but never surprised at the quick progress in these wonderful dogs. Teaching owners to take responsibility for their animals is key to everyone's happiness and safety.
Amazing work. You are very fare with him. She has to get the dog to trust her and to let her be in control. He’s over the top protecting her as he wants to make sure he keeps his home. He’s still on his toes as I call it. When he can relax into her and can listen then I would relax. I would massage my dog everyday to teach him the word relax. It got to the point I could touch him tell him the word so he knew I was in control and the outcome would be good.
GREAT JOB TOM!! Owner did ok too..so glad she came to you !! Your Expert Dog Communication skills at their finest! Knowing how to read an animal comes from experience not books !! From how she said..he was fine with her and good with her kids in the car..and at home. when she first got him....Sounds like the issues began with her energy...when the other people came..They rushed him and overwhelmed him into meeting new people too soon......and then her becoming nervous and anxious she was probably excited too..And he was probably told it was OK and given affection rewarding him....The Trainer and "behavorist" showing fear and them rewarding him again !! Geez! No wonder why he's confused!!! Really really good video!! Excellent advice as always !!!!!
You hit the nail on the head when you said that knowing how to read an animal comes from experience, not from books. You can learn some of it from books, but until you actually work with dogs and observe them carefully, it's just pictures and words on a page.

This really helped, thanks so much for putting these on TH-cam. I left for college and all the work I did with my rescue was gone. But just within two days she's already doing better than with my parents. This will be even better to build her confidence around people and dogs.
Love this video! I am helping a friend with their Mastiff one year old and going to use this video techniques to help with walks and reactivity! Thank you!
You are a wizard with communicating with dogs! I wish you could come up north to where I live! I’ve caught wind of something called the “Pelly Puppy Roundup” and what that is just disgusts me. People have these unfixed dogs running loose 24/7 and every spring, they hire someone to shoot and kill all the puppies and roaming dogs because they’ve become such a danger to people. We do our best to pick up these dogs and take them to the shelter for rehoming but not all of them get this chance. It breaks my heart to see this and I know these dogs deserve another chance to find a new home. There really are no bad dogs. All these animals have been horribly mistreated and need help.
Terrific video all round here. Tigger's improvement despite being so nervous was incredible. The owner seemed to take every bit of advice on board and acknowledge it is on her (not easy to do). The handling skills will come with time and practice but acknowledgement is the first step. Loved this video Tom as it is so realistic and shows how much work is needed to get even the smallest improvements and that a case like this will always require management throughout that dogs life. Really enjoy the way you coach the owner as well. I find I can get really good results when I handle a clients dogs but being able to coach them to do it is still something I am learning to do so it's a privelege to see it done so well. Love from the UK.
I agree with your process 110% You have to train the owners to control their pets no different than they control their kids! After 152 GSDs I would say 99% of all aggressive dogs can be correctly trained. I have only had 2 of all the dogs I have worked with that I could not turn around! And, that broke my heart each time!
Tom I’ve been following you since the beginning I want to congratulate you for all your hard work and helping people to have a better relationship with their dogs . I have shared your videos to people I see struggling with their dogs because you break everything down that all levels of people can understand where their at with their training. You have helped me with my Swiss White shepherds that are a reactive breed I have fine tuned so much with your techniques I can walk all 3 in public. I hope one day you come to Australia as many trainers here only do positive training and their are a lot of dogs (people) 😂 here with issues and dogs are getting dropped of at the pounds put down or rehomed and bounce from home to home , vets also heavily medicate dogs here it’s seems to be their go to we really need you The dogs need you!
That's my job! :)

Dangerous breed. One just randomly attacked my small poodle- owner said he was friendly....usually is. Not that day.
You have the ability to recognize discomfort, lack of
discipline, fear, and frustration in both dogs & humans.
I wish her luck.
he’s soooo cute when he lays down with his legs behind him. high hopes for his future, you can see his potential.
Every dog needs a Tom in their life
❤
Man, I'm so glad to see you have reasonable boundaries with the dog at first instead of adding more stressors before they were ready. A lot of trainers have the mentality that they are boss and really make dogs severely uncomfortable.
THANKS!
some heros don't wear capes, they wear NBD merchandise lol! you're such a blessing to all of us Tom, I hope you know even half of the impact you've had on myself and my apbt Eddie price Jr 🥰
Thanks, Cheryl!
This is exactly how the 2 year old Akita I had a couple weeks ago was. Beautifully done and well taught. It was good to see Tom going into “drama mode” when he showcased pleading with a dog. Loved it lol dropping to the knees was a nice touch and the clients reaction was terrific.
Thanks so much!!
I hope this dog and his owner continue getting better and better! I can tell this was a tough case!
Thanks, mo!
Depends how old he is, how does that saying go?
"I rehabilitate dogs, I train people."- Cesar Milan
Dog training is psychology.
He’s making me better at handling my Dutch. If it works for me, it’ll work for you. Thanks for sharing such precious content.
Amazing seeing Tiggers progress so far from your help in such a short time! Thank you again for all your videos, they’ve been super helpful for our Husky as well! 🙏
Yes, thanks so much, Michelle!
My favorite part is how you teach people to read and understand their dogs. Loving your videos!
Best training channel on TH-cam! Tom brings it!
Amazing video. I feel like anyone with a dog who has behavior issues probably faces the same issues as this owner a lot. We feel like we ARE doing the commands and corrections, but in the end we need someone to watch us and train us on what to react to and how to best react and lead.
love that he made a point to use the flat collar & telling why! it just proves he actually respects the dogs he works with!
what a great owner, way to own what you did/are doing wrong and start fresh with your dog! i hope tigger will live a long happy life with his family xx
I have a Pitty that occasionally reacts to her pup family. This video has helped me so much!!
The fact that the he called the huge distance between Tigger and his dog while training CLOSE gives me a lot of hope for my reactive dog. Thank you so much for all the education
I’m just watching this now and the moment he engages with Tom despite being stressed is just beautiful.
Thank you so much for getting your clients a microphone, so helpful! Love these videos so much. Keep up the awesome work Tom!
I'm so happy you were able to help Tigger.Hes such a beautiful boy.
I'm so glad to see this video. For the first time, I'm experiencing a dog similar that just does not like me! This is very helpful. Thank you very much!
Hope this helps!
I love this video and how Tom gradually won the dog over with his precise methods. The owner had trouble realising that she was the problem. But I think she was up to it
Owner refreshers are such a good idea. Train the owner and the dog will follow!!!
This video is a must. It's a faking masterclass to watch over and over again...so many details to pick up!
Thanks so much, Jose!
I love how clear you make the training and teaching owners accountability. Really well done . 👏
Been watching Tom since the day we brought our new pitbull puppy home, has helped so much.. also want to mention the owner of that pitbull, the fact shes getting toms advice shows true love of that pup.. most people just give up and get rid of or put the dog down .. kudos to her
Such valuable knowledge in each video. No beating around the bush with every aggressive case. Raw, real life all guts no glory DOG TRAINING
Taking the time to change the behavior. His and you as the owner and leader. No Bad Dogs!
Hay Tom. my name is Arye, a dog trainer in Israel for almost 30 years, military, police, live-stock protection dogs & herding. I'm trying to make my way into the pet dog world. I like the way you communicate with the owners. I struggle with that, especially with an opinionated owners. I don't see any content on this topic any where. It will be awesome if you do something like that. thanks
I appreciate your professionalism and your patience.
I now have much more of an understanding of your state of mind and the way it can affect your dog. Tom explains this so clearly that it's transparent.
Loved it.
I'm SO happy they found us!
And I have never seen you hurt a dog when working with them. I have been watching for a couple of years now and I am always inspired watching you work.
It’s always wonderful to see Pittie owners getting help for their dogs. Great job! Would love an update on Tigger!💯🖤🐶
You are One of the best instructors I have seen...I've seen Many.
But your Mastery of the smallest communications to your owners is remarkable, you see a number of things happening at once. But ability to communicate that, to these owners is truly your gift in my opinion. That's a gift, and your remarkable at it.
God Bless you and your staff at the all important job of giving these partnership skills to both owners & dogs.👏👏👏
Your sharing of this information at no cost to owners is Invaluable. Thank-you for your Service Sir. I will be sharing your site with as many people as possible.
Loved watching Tigger progress! Kudos to Tom for being willing to work with a dog that many trainers would not even go near. So hoping his owner continues her progress as a trainer too. I wish we could watch how they continue their training!
Great honesty with the owner. It needed to be said.
Was glad to hear that she would come back for a refresher if needed.
Bruh, id say u need a show, but lol ur longer youtube vids are basically full episodes! Love these
I love the way you work with dogs! And the way you train their owners! I SO wish I could come, myself!
Thank you so much for doing this. I'm always amazed but never surprised at the quick progress in these wonderful dogs. Teaching owners to take responsibility for their animals is key to everyone's happiness and safety.
On the contrary, I found her to be too stubborn in her ways ... somewhat of a "know it all"... but that's like... just my opinion dude ...
@@cherylschaeffer7832 exactly!!...I had someone argue with me ..went on and on,about a comment I made on 2 females fighting in a home....I suggested she spay the dog.... some person...said 2 vets and 2 behaviorist said spaying an intact female won't help aggression..hormones have nothing to do with it....that its documented ???? crazy!!...I know very few vets who have ever studied a pack of dogs let alone live with them....Degrees from books mean nothing..not to me anyway!! Im 67 now been doing this close to 50 yrs... Glad you agree!!! 😊
@@KathgoKat I'm 60 years old and I've been working with dogs for over 50 years. Initially I learned by doing and watching. Only later did I read up on dog body language and learn the words to what I already knew.
And you got it right about the lack of experiential learning.
@@cherylschaeffer7832 me too ! We only had a few good training books in those days. Jennifer Strickland..etc and.. Barbara Woodhouse lol. and the Volhard 8 track !! You got it GF !!!..Experience matters !!!
@@KathgoKat best book I've read was the 2 volume Canine Body Language by Brenda Aloff.
Hi. Hopefully she follows through and contact you guys on a regular basis. People get dogs and don't know nothing about what a dog is. Unfortunately people get puppies and rescues thinking they are helping, but instead they are doing damage mentally. Stay safe.
This really helped, thanks so much for putting these on TH-cam. I left for college and all the work I did with my rescue was gone. But just within two days she's already doing better than with my parents. This will be even better to build her confidence around people and dogs.
The progress really speaks for itself here and I hope the owner continues to really work hard on her training for Tigger. #nobaddogs
Yes, thanks Ashley!
You’re a brave man
I had a dog like that once. Good luck. Do not give up. He can be rehabilitated. Patience, slow down his world by 75 percent.
Again Tom you shown us that there is NO BAD DOGS thanks for the great videos 👍
This training is very helpful. Thanks Tom for your aggressive dog videos
I agree with your process 110% You have to train the owners to control their pets no different than they control their kids! After 152 GSDs I would say 99% of all aggressive dogs can be correctly trained. I have only had 2 of all the dogs I have worked with that I could not turn around! And, that broke my heart each time!
You know your work Tom.Well done.
Great Job! We are aways learning. Sincerely, The Old Dog Trainer, All Of The Best, Dave Byer
Peace Buddy ✌️🇦🇺💕🐶🐶🐶
I wish I was closer to you to have a session with my dog. He’s 95% great, but that 5% is really inconvenient! Nice job with this pit bull.
15:38 thats a clear sign of a relaxed down :D what a great moment
You are an angel.
I LOVED THIS VIDEO!!!!!! The best realistic training of the owner. Amazing Tigger went from wanting to get to you, to allowing you to work him. I will say a prayer for the owner and Tigger.
Tigger is a beautiful dog! Nice job reading his eyeballing.
