And they aren’t wrong considering how successful “haul” and “unboxing” videos are. I personally don’t care for them but those tend to get the most views. It’s beyond me.
It's actually super easy to forget how successful Jenna Marbles has been financially because her personality hasn't changed and her content is still down to earth and funny
It's likely very intentional on the part of Jenna Marbles to not flaunt her wealth. Of course, it helps that she usually makes actual content that isn't dependant on milking her everyday life.
Kylee Trenton I think she did in as much as she cared less about the fame as it grew and more about making herself happy and having fun. It’s something fairly unique to youtube in general I think, seeing how her success made her into a more genuine person because she isn’t trying to grow a channel anymore. It’s her beautiful plant that she can do whatever she wants with because it doesn’t need careful consideration.
I’d also like to add Cristine, or simplynailogical, she acknowledges that she makes a lot of money from TH-cam, but she encourages education. Like literally holding a contest every year to pay a semester of someone’s college tuition
I find it really offensive when these “influencers” act like it’s gross and sO hArD to work a 9-5 job or do “broke people things” like shop at Walmart.
i think a lot of youtubers like that never had to work to begin with. they either had wealthy families, or managed to get successful at a really young age so they didn't have to do a 'normal' job.
When you grow up poor it stays with you, and when you do get any amount of money it feels weird, like you shouldn't have it or don't deserve it. I feel like he's just trying to let people know that he didn't always have this and not flex on them and also maybe come to terms with the fact that he does have it. I mean he definitely missed the mark, but I think that's his mindset anyway
@@reecee2488 it isn't high quality like saf video where she goes into detail but it's exactly what people need Jenna to be. High quality video where you can shut down your brain and just enjoy it. It's low effort to absorb what's been told but it's high quality in that it's not filmed on a potato and doesn't give motion sickness
I feel like the fact that Jenna has a Masters degree in psychology would keep her not only grounded but aware of her actions as she knows how her actions affect others at a tertiary level.
Also explains why she took the fish episode very seriously, I love her so much for how professional she is when it comes down to it, a lot of youtubers and online personalities lack that rn
sapy i think she bought the wrong size fish tank or sum?? but she made a 30 minute apology about it and that fr shows how much she cares and takes issues seriously 🥺❤️
so true, she spends MONEY on making her videos but usually on supplies for crafts or things for her dogs and not on big ticket luxury goods for herself. definitely helps to prevent alienating her general audience while still using her wealth to create interesting content
everyone's talking about Jenna Marbles, How is she even entertaining? She uploaded a video with the title "Claire's makeover" and that got 6.5 million views, Tell me why would 6.5 million people want to watch that? What's so entertaining on watching someone who's 33! years old act like a toddler by dressing up like a child in a full on claire's makeover. All the videos about is Jenna Marbles buying a bunch of childish stuff from clarie's and giving herself a makeover with it. Where is the "Relatable" in that? I find it so dump to be honest. Even grown adults on TH-cam act like toddlers by the kind of content they still do. It makes them look 3 years old all over again.
And there werent 10 ads on a seven minute video and cats like keyboard cat or nyan cat ruled cyberspace But also really happy dogs are getting appreciated this decade
now people are doing it bc they have pay bills. mostt people want to stop doing youtube but they cant bc youtube is a major source of income bc without youtube they dont havre100,000 of thousands of dollars.
yes and before the algorithm changed to make TH-camrs have to put out content regularly for them to stay on top. I remember Tomska getting 10s of millions of views and only posting once every six months because everyone loved his animations. He could actually _take time_ to make quality content.
Nozomi Tojo masquerading as a poor person in my opinion is worse because it’s like if you are rich, embrace it, be grateful for it, don’t tru to act like you are someone you aren’t. Honestly I’d rather someone brag about being rich because at least they aren’t lying.
definitely being rich and trying to act as if they are poor,if you're rich and earned your success its not a big deal unless if you're one of those kids in my schools or pretty much everyones school who only brags about her parents fame that's very annoying
Yeah. I had to pause the video and stare at the wall for a sec. Like can you imagine being this baffled by the concept of normal people working normal jobs every day.

I noticed a pattern with youtubers who have remained “relatable” like Sofia Nygard, Jenna Marbles, Pewdiepie etc. are often people who started their channel’s once they were adults and often already in their early 20’s. It makes me wonder if there is a correlation and if having a few years of adulthood and the struggles that come with it have allowed them to remain a bit more humble and levelheaded. This doesn’t necessarily mean that someone who starts their channel in their 20’s is automatically a better person, they just are more likely to understand the privileges that TH-cam stardom have awarded them. But it’s just a thought!
Hannah Koenig That actually makes a lot of sense! Another TH-camr who I think is still relatable is Colleen Ballinger, and maybe it was because she worked so hard as an adult to get where she is now. Maybe it is just a matter of maturity and whether you have been exposed to adult issues…
I think the reality of bills, and the insecurity of changing jobs a few times changes their opinion on spending money, whereas younger TH-camrs who've maybe had one part time job to have extra cash for shopping before they started blogging and then started making a large amount very quickly without ever really having to depend on their savings or being super frugal before.
The biggest shift you may see is a political shift as seen by Laci Green (left to right), Cult of Dusty (left to right to Communist) or myself split between PorygonFanatics and HammableOfCarthage (Ancap to Democratic Socialist/Chavista).
i love bestdressed as a youtuber because she doesn't pretend to be poor. she talks about saving money and thrifting and things like that, but she also states that she's in a privileged position and cannot relate to a lot of strugges people face, and she's super open about her privilege as well as her issues
@@audreywang3060 everyone changes over the years which is natural. It depends on how you view it. But I still like her. I think she is actually changing for the better because in LA she never got to be her true self. Also, she actually is caring for the pandemic and is just staying in her apartment ACTUALLY being safe so if I were in New York all by myself I would change a little bit as well. But my opinion tho
@Freedom Fighter dude yea she's made it clear before that she didn't grow up poor and that she's from a small suburban town in maryland. that is not a secret. and if she resells things she thrifts then it's cause she alters them and adds something to it. to say that she's never worked is a complete lie lol
@@nm541 But she said that she was gonna use them nevertheless. Perhaps she gave some to friends and family and use the rest. I may be wrong but she seems so sincere.
It def is wasteful and as someone aspiring to be in the environmental field its not ideal. However i am interested in the content and enjoy her personality
@@nm541 there's a flipside to that argument that safiya really invests in her videos. you can tell she comes from a "content producer" background, her stuff is always well made and she's usually got several videos in production at the same time. i think she spends that money knowing it's a good investment for her channel, she understands that it's a business and a brand. i don't agree with her spending so much on unethical produced stuff like on Wish, but at least with her makeup science stuff she ends up giving the end product back to her subscribers in giveaways
Delaney De La Torre Did you really just say Jeffree is humble? Are you people serious. He’s done several videos about buying makeup from Walmart and Walgreens... where millions upon millions of people shop and get makeup from. He was laughing the entire video and talking about how he hasn’t stepped a foot in one of those places in a long time. He is not relatable at all. You’re just a fan still, so you and many others don’t see it.
Honestly one of my favorite TH-camrs is Micarah Tewers. She's really fun and charming while also being somewhat educational. Her channel revolves around sewing and her daily life living in her RV.
Shane acts like he's poor but he's literally rich, obviously he doesn't have money like jeffree but he still has a lot of money compared to 9 to 5 workers.
I wouldn’t say he acts like he’s poor, but coming from a poor family to suddenly making more money than you’re used to, it’s difficult to come out of that “poor” mindset.
Jerom Maat no he isn’t if you see his series with Jeffree star he says how his salary isn’t that high from like from a a bit higher than normal paying job but way lower than other youtubers and ofc influencers too
Shamey Ames I’m talking about their money on their paychecks not what they save Jeffree gets paid millions of dollars as “paycheck” while Shane only gets a few thousand every week
I mean i can somewhat understand it. No he isn’t poor but growing up being really short on money i would believe that stays with you. Its a mindset more than an economical shortage at this point. Its pretty obvious he doesn’t use his money nearly as much as he could and he still seems very humble regarding his fame to be honest. Nevertheless he’s not poor and shouldn’t claim to be so but he can still be overwhelmed by others wealth without meaning any harm.

It's only really in context to him having a lot less money than someone like jeffree star, he knows he isn't poor because he has been in the past and joking around about it with for example jeffree star isn't a big deal as long as you remember the difference in their financial situations and get that's what he's referring to
Just blows my mind that so many wealthy youtubers, especially when they didn’t grow up or start off rich, start to take being poor as a joke as if that’s not one of the most stressful and depressing things people go through
ughhhh seeing the ace family "working" at the restaurant for "24 hours" made me cringe a whole lot. I currently work part time as a waitress and there was this "celebrity" who used to work for us (bcs the owner REAALLLYYY cares abt fame n publicity) and jesus christ never have I met a person so entitled to themselves before. Basically he intentionally took breaks when the restaurant was busy (the rest of us usually take breaks before or after our shift, but no he just stopped in the middle of the chaotic situation and said "kay im gonna eat lol"), and he told the chef to cook him this dish that takes a longer time to cook, and bcs the chef thought it was for a customer he cooked it only to find out that it was for our dear "celebrity." Not only did he slow down our work during busy hours by interrupting our chef, he literally took his fucking time eating his food until the crowd died down. And what's worse, the owner always sided with him, literally blaming me for not refilling water that was located outside the kitchen that the "celebrity" was conveniently standing next to when my job that night was mostly inside the kitchen prepping dishes. I don't care if you're rich or famous. And acknowledging the fact that other ppl would see u differently is important too. But if you start going around using that to ur advantage then ure a piece of shit.
TroyceTV used to get death threats and thousands of dislikes on his videos because he called out their BS years ago. I’m really glad people are starting to wake up. They exploit their child viewers into giving them money
I genuinely think Catherine might be a good person away from austin. Austin is the rotten apple except he’s super toxic and irritating and I think he brings down the rest of the family. I hated Catherine too until I saw a video of her “getting rid of” Austin’s jet ski and then having to use Elle as a shield because she looked scared of his reaction. I think he is really controlling and toxic. Plus she always apologizes when Austin fucks up and she is way too good for him.

the moment I realized Emma wasn’t relatable anymore was when she made a video with the Dolan twins and James Charles where they shopped for each other and they all spent like at least thousand like it was nothing
honestly now she doesn’t put much of her life with her friends on youtube, she seems more relaxed and like a weight has lifted. when she was with the dolan twins and JC, she almost HAD to be the “newbie to LA” who should be spending all their money and making original videos. but now she hangs out with her friends in private and doesn’t put it all on youtube. she also seems to have got her stuff together now. she has her own apartment and goes to the gym/ has a good diet/ spends fine with her parents/ etc. she also has two days, which sound silly to say, but she’s given herself some responsibility. honestly i think by the fine you become as popular as she is, it’s hard to be the same “relatable” person as you were 3 years ago. she lived in her moms house and then in an apartment with her mom she got stalked and it wasn’t safe for her (she had money and that made her a target for crime and stuff). not here to be sucking up to her i just think that sometimes it’s hard to be the same as you were 3 years ago when she grew up 😊
I feel like Aspyn used to be in the same category with like MyLifeAsEva, Bethany Mota etc. but now she is married, has a kid, and has just matured way more. She doesn’t try to be the “relatable teenager” anymore(which I am very happy about, by her content is enjoyable and not cringey)
Adison Lopez when she showed the group of people in that category I was so caught off guard seeing aspyns old content, completely forgot she was part of that kind of content! I like her content now. If I suddenly earned a lot of money, I’d definitely buy nicer things, move into a bigger house, etc. I think I’d be a bit hypocritical for calling someone else unrelatable for doing it. I think it’s a bit simpler than that. My theory: These people were always unpleasant. it’s just becoming more obvious to their audience the more they share about themselves.
I completely agree with you. It is hypocritical, and even then why is it so important for everyone to be relatable in the first place. It is bothersome if they still “act relatable” so I do get that. As someone who has grown up very very poor, it shouldn’t be competition of who is the poorest/ most relatable or deserving of nice things.
I don't think that's what it's about... It's not that that's unrelatable, like if you take Jenna Marbles, yeah she lives in a big house, has 3 dogs and buys a lot of useless items to carry out all of her weird videos... but people still enjoy them! It's because the essence of who she is as a person hasn't changed. She's still loud and funny and weird and people click with that because that's who she's always been (imo she's actually even gotten better with time because she's stopped giving a shit about whether or not her videos are going to fit the algorithm/be well received). It's more like if your content has always been relatable and people like you, and then you make a crap ton of money and this completely different lifestyle is suddenly your main goal, but you're still pushing the relatability thing - that's annoying. Not because you can't be proud of what you've got, but because that's all that matters to you anymore and you've lost touch with an audience that was primarily interesting in you because u were "just like them". Then it gets worse when and they can't tell why people are complaining about how entitled they're acting, or make weird "you changed" videos
i think that’s not the point of the video, there’s nothing wrong w making money, just that a lot of people let it affect their content in a way that’s detrimental to their original brand, creating a disconnect that makes them unlikeble to their original viewers
@Welcome To Poppy's World yes she built a mock farm where she would dress up in a silk milk-maid outfit and pretend to milk cows and pet perfectly groomed sheep. There's a reason she was guillotined.

I’ve worked medium wage since I was a sophomore in high school and after watching this, I’m honestly so grateful to have that experience. I couldn’t imagine dropping out of high school to be a TH-camr and never even being able to relate to working a day in your life
Honestly, the thing that bothered me the most about the Hayley Pham trip thing was how she criticized Greece so harshly as if it was an amusement park. The only point I disagree with is that Jefree isn’t trying to be “relatable” when he’s eating Burger King, Taco Bell, etc. He just really really likes fast food
I agree I lost think that he is more relatable to a certain audience but not like the way of his lifestyle but the way he think and acts plus a lot of his audience watches him because he is funny and entertaining and for his credibility on make up that doesn’t mean they watch him solely for him being relatable
Megan Ealey ya I also think jeffree doesn’t try to be relatable at all. He just wants to show how far he’s gotten by working his ass off and being an entrepreneur. Aka he flexes. People watch him pretty much solely because of that, and because of the emotional shane content (which does make him emotionally relatable).
Megan Ealey and he’s not relatable just bc he likes greasy fast food either. It’s not relatable to eat Burger King in his private jet that’s ridiculous. Donald Trump eats McDonald’s everyday and he couldn’t relate to a “poor” upper class person.
You aren’t meant to be a brand. You are meant to be a person. Its hard to watch TH-camrs and celebrities turn themselves (personality, like-ability, daily activities) into a show for people to watch and buy into. Dangerous game. Especially when you are young and media savvy. Learn to live life without an audience. It’s okay to create but keep it separate from everything you are.
Shane Dawson’s only personality trait is “Being bRoKE” yet he is LITERALLY a multi-millionaire. Let me repeat that, MULTI-MILLIONAIRE. The cognitive dissonance that is required for him to even utter the words “I’m broke” is just...... whew. Can’t even imagine.
Chloe Wiley He has been poor for most of his life though. He only learned to really start spending more money (buying gucci etc) recent times. He still wears worn out shirts with holes in them, drives an old ass jeep, etc. He generally only talks about “being broke” when he’s comparing himself to someone waaaay wealthier like jeffree. I agree he sometimes says it and I go like “shut up” but I get why he says it.
Jenna is a humble queen and I love that she just enjoys her life and her success on the downlow. She deserves it. Her, Julien and the pups all deserve the world.
it’s wild because even watching jenna’s new house video just elicited feelings of pride and happiness for her. maybe because she’s been around and “in my life” for ten years and it’s like watching your hardworking big sis get something she deserves...or maybe because it wasn’t about how big and fancy it is but just the fact that they were proud of getting to own a home for the first time, together. idk but jenna is just so sweet and mindful and self aware and it’s easy to celebrate her successes with her.
I feel like what Jenna spends her money on is what *I* would spend theoretical money on -- no matter what my income is, I'm not going to wear Gucci slides, because I feel like they're ugly and wasteful. I would ABSOLUTELY buy a crateload of Halloween costumes for my 17 dogs. The mansion is okay because we all know it's mostly just for Kermit.

I don’t mind if a TH-camr has money, but please don’t minimize your wealth, act poor, or patronize your non wealthy viewers. Shane: acts poor, but clearly has money. It’s obnoxious. I like him, but not a fan of the “I’m poor” line. Jeffree Star: clearly has money and is honest about how much money he has. I’m cool with it. He has earned it, worked for it, and doesn’t pretend he lives a modest lifestyle or patronize those who don’t. And that’s just his personality, so it works for his channel. Jenna Marbles: the personification of humility. I will never tire of watching her. Ace Family: I think there fast food worker video says it all. They are awful.
It’d be hard to live off more than about 50k a year if I was a TH-camr. You just never know when the gravy train will end, and if you get used to spending a million a year what do you do when you’re making 20k a year at Walmart because you have no other skills?
Jenna does good because she doesn’t try too hard, and she doesn’t try to act poor or rich, she acts like a normal person and that’s what makes her likable
I hate when Shane outright says he’s “poor” cuz he’s not obviously... But when he’s shocked by price tags I think it comes from growing up poor. He really doesn’t spend his money quite like other TH-camrs. Jeffree was the one who got him to spend on luxury items.
I think he just means he's not as rich as people think. Especially not compared to Jeffree, Tana, Jake.. etc. He did state he didn't want to come across as "pretending" to be poor because he knows he's not. He just doesnt want to use the money and flaunt. Maybe Im reading too far, bc Im a fan loool 😂 but I guess I get what you mean.
TrulyTaekook he doesn’t make more money that them. You don’t know this stuff. He doesn’t put adds in most of his videos anymore. He does make money yes, but we wouldn’t know weather he is making more money that the people you mentioned. Stop fishing for things you can say to prove your point.
He says “I’m poor when I’m with Jeffree,” not that he’s poor. He’s saying that comparatively to Jeffree, shane really isn’t that wealthy. This difference is especially reflected in the series when they discuss how much shane is going to make from the palette.
He grew up being poor and even tho he isn't, he may feel like he is. He most definitely doesn't mean it in a bad way and it's probably just something mental. He also said that if he admitted to being rich, he'd be scared that it all will go away.
My issue with Shane is that he hasn’t “grown” as a person. His personality still revolves around “oh look I’m ugly and disgusting and poor” which has been his shtick since 2016. I dunno, but his personality feels more like a character than somebody who wants to be taken seriously. It’s just boring now to watch him repeat the same gestures, faces, and jokes😐😐
Yeah it’s getting super annoying. I literally have to stop watching the video to process how weird it is that he has millions of dollars and is saying he is ugly when he looks perfectly fine
@@gnarlyghoul3203 This is the dumbest fucking comment I've ever seen. I love Shane, I've been watching him since 2009. I was there when Bree, Kat, Steve, Shanna and Britt made up his 'squad'. I mention all of this to convey the fact that I love him and support him, but he is not fucking poor. I cannot believe how fucking stupid and cringe-worthy his new wave of fans are. Don't get me wrong, I am so happy he's gaining traction and am ecstatic that he is so popular right now, but holy fucking shit are they all ignorant sheep. Just because he doesn't have the physical currency (he probably does) to show for his fortune doesn't mean he's poor. It's hilarious that someone would even try to defend Shane in regards to the subject. EDIT: Also, he's not fucking poor compared to other TH-camrs. He just makes jokes about that. In contrast to Jeffree he definitely has less money, but that's because he's a tactful businessman, who's miles ahead of your traditional TH-camr. Shane's level of wealth is in no way relatable or can even be considered poor, even at the comparison of other TH-camr's.
Y’all he makes poor jokes (or at least did before the conspiracy palette bacame a huge success) because, while he had nice things, he was in serious debt for them. He’s been upper middle class for awhile, but not rich. Even then it’s his personality that makes him relatable, not his bank account.

cristine and ben take such a mature, level headed approach to the whole youtube thing that's so rare on yt. sometimes it feels like they're the only adults on here hahaha
Tbh, most Asian content creators who are successful from TH-cam moved on to another venture or are super lowkey about the wealth they possessed. Idk if it's a cultural thing but so far Asian creators like Wong Fu, Anna Akana, Ryan Higa and RHPC, JK party, and family vloggers (they're a lot) to name a few don't exactly strike me to have this whole "not relatable" issue.
This reminds me of bunny aka graveyard girl hiding her mansion, closet and cars bc she didn't want to flaunt. As a longtime viewer I was surprised that she's basically living a double life
strabababerry yeah like tiffany said, Just don’t obnoxiously flaunt it/flex on us all, don’t try to lie to people or hide that shit and say that you’re not rich. That’s just being disingenuous..
@@randomalienfrommars0567 I think it would only be disingenuous if graveyard girl pretended she was poor, and pretended she didn't live in a mansion? Like, atleast IMO there's a difference b/w hiding something b/c you just don't want to flaunt it, and purposely hiding it *in order to* push forward a completely untrue agenda (i.e "pretending to be poor"). i haven't seen graveyard for a hot minute, so ignore me/correct me if im wrong lol. Jenna Marbles is such an excellent example I think. We know she's rich, and that she has a great house, etc- but she never for one second makes a point to show her wealth, but that doesn't mean her life is a lie, right? idk idk. pls ignor me lol
I feel like I have trouble unsubscribing or “letting go” of youtubers that I used to relate to once they become out of touch or tone deaf. It’s like breaking up with a friend (who has no idea you left lol) For me it’s not that people have money but when that becomes their personality it’s hard to watch. I feel like even people that aren’t rich like to have nice things and save for pricey stuff but it’s not their whole personality.
I agree. By the time a youtuber has become rich and their channel is at 10 million subscribers, you yourself have been a subscriber for that 6 year journey so it isn't easy to unsubscribe. I think youtubers forget that. I think they forget that by the time that youtuber has made it big, it took them 6 years to get there so the same normal people have followed them that entire time and invested time and their emotions into connecting with the youtuber that the subscriber can't just walk away. And during that 6 year journey, because they have maintained being relatable for so long that these channels may not necessarily be picking up other rich young people as new subscribers. The content is changing, but not the viewers.
i'll unsubscribe if someone makes one video i don't like. youtube is parasocial. they're not your actual friends you're not going to hurt their feelings. i like how bo burnham put it when he said, 'Stop sticking with artists through thick and thin. If I stop entertaining you, kick me to the curb.' Actually the entire Make Happy special has a lot to do with the concept of performance and relatability it's a good supplemental viewing to this video.
I often unsubscribe when I didn't enjoy the last 5,6 videos. And when their videos in my subscription box make me cringe instead of happy. But will probably still check the channel once in a while.
Omg its the same for me with Trish shes completely wack. But i just cant leave her somehow. Now i decided to unsubscribe to her. But still come for time to time ....
The thing with Jeffree is that his entire channel is based on his elusiveness so if he appears unrelatable, it's an intentional effort. With him, I don't mind the extravagance. I have a problem with the people who try to appear relatable but aren't or those who actually built their channel on being relatable.
And it is funny that Jeffree seems much more relatable than those other youtubers who try too hard to seem relatable :D Like Tiffany said in the video, probably because of his personality. What I love most about him is a) he is a damn scorpio, b) like majority of the scorpios, he doesn't forget where he came from, he keeps it real.
I agree but I also think that there is a blatant shallowness and willful ignorance about his purchases (recently saw a documentary on how African immigrants are being exploited in leather tanneries in Italy to produce handbags for all of the luxury brands). He mentions once in his videos that he donates to an LGBT cause but he doesn't seem to educate himself with other causes like the impact his lifestyle has on the environment (cars, flights, junkfood, leather goods etc). When you are that rich you have a responsibility to inform yourself and change the world with your power and influence. You are one of billions who is lucky enough to do so- and I say this from a place of admiration given that he is a self made millionaire.
Yeah! I was scrolling through Zoella's Channel and her views have increasingly dropped. She went down from 1.8 million views on one video to 4.6k(ish) views on one video. I was really shocked.
She's still so down to earth and so humble. The best thing about her is her ability to accept critisism with grace and take accountability and apologize meaningfully when she makes a mistake. She is just such a great person.
@@permanentstateofawe6544 she and Julien also apologized for reading r/nosleep posts on their podcast when they didn't realize it was not allowed and it's also a very good apology. No theatrics. No manipulation. Just "this was shitty of us. Don't defend us. We are so sorry and we are doing everything we can to make this right with the authors, and we've taken all the podcasts down."
I do think that Drew Gooden did a great job covering how TH-camrs often get famous for being relatable and then they lose their relatability and become less likable with that. That being said, regardless of Ellen's behind the scenes personality, I watched her "Relatable" stand up special and it was hilarious because of how absurdly unrelatable it was.
When a youtuber I like makes a “moving to LA” vlog/video, that’s pretty much when I start losing interest. There’s nothing wrong with moving to LA but most of the youtubers I watched, once they moved there all their videos became way less relatable. *There’s obviously some that live in LA that I still watch and still find relatable or they make content that I enjoy. Like Sierra Schultzzie lives in Cali with her husband but I love her body positivity content and she is more relatable with her personality and such.
I live in LA and HAAAAAAAAATE a lot of LA based youtubers. They all go to the same places, do the same things, eat the same foods it makes me sick. I really avoid it like the bubonic plague.
Samantha Louise Reyes exactly! They obviously move there for the content and because it’s where all the TH-camrs go to live. So they all start doing the same exact stuff and go to the same places and it starts to feel like I’m watching the same videos over and over but with different people in them.
One of my favourite TH-camrs, Bestdressed, is a really good example of how you can make money and still be relatable. She started TH-cam as a very poor college student and based a lot of her content around thrifted fashion- she still thrifts a ton because she lives in expensive places, so her cost of living is much higher. But she also recognises the fact that she's no longer struggling with 5 roommates; she explicitly said that it's why she stopped making jokes about being poor: she no longer felt like she was in a position to do that. A lot of her content is also relatable regardless of income, things like self-image, sex-positivity, and trying to plan for what you want out of life.
Sebastian Lugo yessss! Ashley is so relatable because she isn’t afraid of taking about the real-life problems she has faced. Watching her videos is like talking to a good friend :)
Ashley's dad clears $327,000/year as of 2017--his salary is public information because he's employed by the state of Maryland. He's the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs for UMBC. She's never been poor. She's always had the luxury of her parents' safety net.
im in the age category that has seen the "girly girl exaggerated" content (even though I was a little late) and also the "white girl who will probably move to la" era that's happening/winding down? and it's really just shocking. they really are so different but it seems like other things follow suit, (musically->tiktok) (Instagram changing) (vidcon->playlist) and I guess the new "relatable aesthetic" content creators are changing a lot and it's very interesting to see how they are going to change a new wave of social media culture. (I think it's kinda already going downhill with aesthetic culture kinda turning to flex and unrelatable culture with some creators) but overall how this is going to change.
bestdressed is easily one of my favorite youtubers who stay humble & actually have a good personality (& content). i even remember her saying that before youtube she was genuinely broke in a college student way but because of youtube, she isn’t anymore. would 100% recommend her channel. also i see you wearing her earrings ;)
she also CONSTANTLY verbally acknowledges her privilege and acknowledges if something that she is doing is unrealistic which is so refreshing to see in a youtuber :)))
yes!!! ashley is so real and down to earth even though she's obviously extremely successful she never forgets to mention her privilege and her content makes it feel like she's talking to a friend
I WAS JUST ABOUT TO MENTION ASHLEY IN THE COMMENTS ! I just think Ashley does a good job of being relatable and acknowledging the privileges she has had in life, while not discounting the hard work she's put in to get to where she is. She's so down to earth and sweet and even if she spends ungodly amounts on clothing (which she also acknowledges bc it's a part of her job) and travels and goes to events, she's still just big sister Ashley and talks about boys and being a girl in America and growing up and periods and stuff
@@maqicool I absolutely agree. I saw, how her channel grew, and I think she definietly "kept" her relatability, because her new money didn't change her personality at all.
@@maqicool Yesss!! She still seems authentic. And even though she buys alot of clothes, she goes for style over just flexing luxury brands. She loves Reformation but still doesn't go crazy shopping their clothes.
There's also a huge difference between making content focused on relatability and making contents about your daily life. If their channel leans toward sharing their privileged life its not alienating their audience rather it's just how life has been going on for themselves and some people enjoy those type of contents, their rawness, although it might look ignorant to some but we just got to accept what they really are
I love your videos. They’re always intellectually stimulating!! It’s the type of content that’s interesting without being pompous which is rare on this platform !!
Right after Haley’s complaining about her vacation, I completely unstanned. edit: she apologized for her behavior lately and it seemed genuine so she’s ok for now! acknowledging your mistakes is growth, right?
to me it was as soon as she moved out, the first couple of videos were still really good, and then slowly she just changed and I couldn't watch anymore..
I was kinda sad when she got really popular because I liked her, like right before she blew up on social media, and inspired me as a dancer, but now... :/
I feel Like Jenna Marbles is the only sincere youtuber i know of that’s down to earth. When it comes to apology videos, other youtubers just say sorry but Jenna oH jEnNA she apologizes like heck (made no sense but o well) home girl made like a forty minute video apologizing for buying the wrong fish tank and recently apologized for reading reddit posts on her and her mans podcast. Not to mention she doesn’t flex and her content is just trying to be happy with her life and spoil the fuck out of her dogs
arcadiagay Eh, it’s pretty obvious Shane’s not a superficial guy. And he doesn’t try to hide his wealth either. It never feels like he takes any of it for granted. He treats everyone with kindness. Those specific jokes maybe not relatable but he overall is.
He just doesn’t have as much money as the ppl he’s around at the moment so he can’t relate but yeah no he has plenty of money and if he says the same thing after this palette.... 😬😬
Sure, but maybe a lot of their money might go to paying the mortgage and other Bill's? I think when he says that he means he doesnt have money to spend on things he doesnt need
it annoys me how hes always like "omgg you live in a mamsion i could NEVERRRR" like hunn. you have a mountain basically. but tbh at this point im glad hes finally started wearing clothes that arent covered in likw food and holes
That’s complicated. Most people don’t do it consciously. There’s a few different reasons we follow creators and influencers: they make interesting content, they make content you can relate to and/or are themselves relatable, they have lived you can aspire towards, or they have the type of personality that your friends typically do.
This "era" of youtubers feels like when the The Hills actors were already $rich n famous$ but still acted like they had to work 9 to 5 and live normal lives until the inauthenticity of it all killed the show
I know, recklessly buying a Tesla before she even has a license... yikes And that video she took following Emma Chamberlain around Whole Foods while playing some immature song...
Yep she is relying on that TH-cam money to keep flowing in but if she continues down the path she’s going she’s going to be broke before she realizes what happens. Hopefully she can turn it around.
I feel like Jeffree is more liked because he has that kind of “don’t forget where you came from” energy. He has that kind of started from nothing vibe, I like it.
G M i don’t like jeffree but no it’s because he doesn’t make many videos specifically to flaunt what he has. yes he does show off what he has but it’s hardly ever the main topic of the video. he also knows he’s extremely rich and doesn’t try to act relatable or poor.
G M totally. that whole “the world of jeffree star” series really opened my eyes up to how humble he really is, even if his wealth is apparent. he flaunts it cuz he’s proud of it, & knows how much work it took him to earn it
as strange as it may seem, I think JF is relatable. he totally gets the fact that his lifestyle is crazy rich and talks about it openly, he had nothing to start out with, so he knows the value of money.
yeah i respect that dude. 10 years ago he was homeless & turning to prostitution to eat. hes maintaining a rlly financially stable life just like everyone could if you put in the work and motivation. his flaunting of his expensive items doesn’t bother me because Jeffree came from nothing and worked hard for everything. quite inspiring really
people think spending money is content
Ellie Scott they claim it as a business expenses
But it is, and i LOVE
It's basically spending money to get it back. It's all about it, that's quite sad actually.
And they aren’t wrong considering how successful “haul” and “unboxing” videos are. I personally don’t care for them but those tend to get the most views. It’s beyond me.
only mr beast can make that work
It's actually super easy to forget how successful Jenna Marbles has been financially because her personality hasn't changed and her content is still down to earth and funny
Kyleigh Caicedo YES!!
Yeah even when her videos weren't great, she never jumped away from who she was - which is admirable. Her views never dropped as a result.
It's all for the dogs; the dogs deserve that house
It's likely very intentional on the part of Jenna Marbles to not flaunt her wealth. Of course, it helps that she usually makes actual content that isn't dependant on milking her everyday life.
a slut for sabrina spellman sorry, but your username 😍 samee
Jenna Marbles is a perfect example of someone who doesn’t let fame get to her head
She's the perfect example of everything honestly.
She’s just a perfect example of a good person and youtuber
i agree. i love that she still makes the same sort of content and hasn't 'sold out' at all.

I think that shane thinks that being “humble” means acting poor
Yeah it’s almost annoying
When you grow up poor it stays with you, and when you do get any amount of money it feels weird, like you shouldn't have it or don't deserve it.

Really good point! They had already formed their personalities possibly?
The biggest shift you may see is a political shift as seen by Laci Green (left to right), Cult of Dusty (left to right to Communist) or myself split between PorygonFanatics and HammableOfCarthage (Ancap to Democratic Socialist/Chavista).
That makes sense

More money than a 9 to 5 worker?? That dudes probably a millionair, he's been at it for years
I wouldn’t say he acts like he’s poor, but coming from a poor family to suddenly making more money than you’re used to, it’s difficult to come out of that “poor” mindset.

Shane Dawson saying he's poor is like spitting in the face of poor people
I mean i can somewhat understand it. No he isn’t poor but growing up being really short on money i would believe that stays with you. Its a mindset more than an economical shortage at this point. Its pretty obvious he doesn’t use his money nearly as much as he could and he still seems very humble regarding his fame to be honest. Nevertheless he’s not poor and shouldn’t claim to be so but he can still be overwhelmed by others wealth without meaning any harm.

ughhhh seeing the ace family "working" at the restaurant for "24 hours" made me cringe a whole lot. I currently work part time as a waitress and there was this "celebrity" who used to work for us (bcs the owner REAALLLYYY cares abt fame n publicity) and jesus christ never have I met a person so entitled to themselves before. Basically he intentionally took breaks when the restaurant was busy (the rest of us usually take breaks before or after our shift, but no he just stopped in the middle of the chaotic situation and said "kay im gonna eat lol"), and he told the chef to cook him this dish that takes a longer time to cook, and bcs the chef thought it was for a customer he cooked it only to find out that it was for our dear "celebrity."
Not only did he slow down our work during busy hours by interrupting our chef, he literally took his fucking time eating his food until the crowd died down.

Ace family is pure trash
TroyceTV used to get death threats and thousands of dislikes on his videos because he called out their BS years ago. I’m really glad people are starting to wake up. They exploit their child viewers into giving them money
Exactly what I was thinking too
I genuinely think Catherine might be a good person away from austin.
@@anikachaturvedii he gives me narcissistic vibes. He seems unable to care about other people but himself and seems to be quite manipulative. I feel for his daughters as they are gonna have a hard time being balanced in the future.
the moment I realized Emma wasn’t relatable anymore was when she made a video with the Dolan twins and James Charles where they shopped for each other and they all spent like at least thousand like it was nothing
some day she’s still not funny or relatable so
i have never watched a vid of her the only thought that comes to my mind is balloney from Phineas and Ferb
Is everything about money in your lifes? Like wth
honestly now she doesn’t put much of her life with her friends on youtube, she seems more relaxed and like a weight has lifted. when she was with the dolan twins and JC, she almost HAD to be the “newbie to LA” who should be spending all their money and making original videos. but now she hangs out with her friends in private and doesn’t put it all on youtube. she also seems to have got her stuff together now. she has her own apartment and goes to the gym/ has a good diet/ spends fine with her parents/ etc. she also has two days, which sound silly to say, but she’s given herself some responsibility. honestly i think by the fine you become as popular as she is, it’s hard to be the same “relatable” person as you were 3 years ago. she lived in her moms house and then in an apartment with her mom she got stalked and it wasn’t safe for her (she had money and that made her a target for crime and stuff). not here to be sucking up to her i just think that sometimes it’s hard to be the same as you were 3 years ago when she grew up 😊
And do you want her to not spend her well earned money just so you guys can feel good about yourselves
She has been able to mature her content along with herself, cool to see a successful content transition like that

I like your theory of "they sucked all along"
If that's what you do after getting a lot of money, then you're bad with money.

The only point I disagree with is that Jefree isn’t trying to be “relatable” when he’s eating Burger King, Taco Bell, etc. He just really really likes fast food
Megan Ealey I think she met that in comes off as relatable not that he’s trying to be
Megan Ealey 100% Jeffree has ALWAYS LOVED TACO BELL

Iamjellibell She FLEXED her turning into a chevron patterned chair skills, too!
it’s wild because even watching jenna’s new house video just elicited feelings of pride and happiness for her. maybe because she’s been around and “in my life” for ten years and it’s like watching your hardworking big sis get something she deserves...or maybe because it wasn’t about how big and fancy it is but just the fact that they were proud of getting to own a home for the first time, together. idk but jenna is just so sweet and mindful and self aware and it’s easy to celebrate her successes with her.

I hate when Shane outright says he’s “poor” cuz he’s not obviously...
But when he’s shocked by price tags I think it comes from growing up poor. He really doesn’t spend his money quite like other TH-camrs. Jeffree was the one who got him to spend on luxury items.

Y’all he makes poor jokes (or at least did before the conspiracy palette bacame a huge success) because, while he had nice things, he was in serious debt for them. He’s been upper middle class for awhile, but not rich. Even then it’s his personality that makes him relatable, not his bank account.

Tourism is our biggest source of income and we are in desperate need of it. Please don't let our instability stop you from coming!
i am really saddened about what happened with syriza. i hope you are doing well, and can continue the labor struggle.
Jenna Marbles and Simplynailogical are 2 youtubers who though they are rich, they are SO down to earth and act normal and do not flex unnecessarily.
dumbbrowngirl and the content is always enjoyable I love them both
Kailani Capelouto ugh same! Every video is funny of theirs
simply is the loml
cristine and ben take such a mature, level headed approach to the whole youtube thing that's so rare on yt. sometimes it feels like they're the only adults on here hahaha
and cristine has a job outside of youtube as well!
why is no one talking about ryan higa literally the most down to earth youtuber ever
THANK YOU I was searching for a comment mentioning him
Yessssss nigahiga was my first favorite TH-camd back in the old TH-cam days
I love him so much for being original til now
RIGHT!!
As a longtime viewer I was surprised that she's basically living a double life
@@user-wp5cf4uf3b same here, but I think it also felt weird that she was actively hiding it.
@@strabababerry It's her private life that she doesn't have to share with us and choose not to until the Shane Dawson series with her.
@@GhostBritt of course! She doesn't have to openly explain all that she has now, I just felt it was weird how she so actively hid it.
strabababerry yeah like tiffany said, Just don’t obnoxiously flaunt it/flex on us all, don’t try to lie to people or hide that shit and say that you’re not rich.
We know she's rich, and that she has a great house, etc- but she never for one second makes a point to show her wealth, but that doesn't mean her life is a lie, right? idk idk. pls ignor me lol
your third eye was really open when you predicted the fall of Ellen
your third eye immediately rested with Shane and Jeffery tho
LOL
Ellen has been known to be rude for years... People just glossed over it.
"Guys, we are LITERALLY working right now!" Lolololol, this is the height of being privileged, xd.
I knooow😭😂
germankiwigal “do you understand how cool that is??” No no I don’t
I sell weed (legally) for a living and I say this line to myself almost everyday. It's so unbelievable lol
And it is funny that Jeffree seems much more relatable than those other youtubers who try too hard to seem relatable :D
Like Tiffany said in the video, probably because of his personality.
If his channel was based on exclusiveness would it not itself be exclusive?!?!
Exactly!!! Sam with Gabi. Whereas Emma Chamberlain thinks and attempts to be relatable but her lifestyle just isn’t anymore.
Like shane dawson lmao he cried about not being on the TH-cam forbes list in his balenciaga hoodie in his million dollar hollywoos hills estate
You were on the Ellen train waaay before everyone else was.

I think “you’re not relevant anymore” would be a very good video concept
Yeah! I was scrolling through Zoella's Channel and her views have increasingly dropped. She went down from 1.8 million views on one video to 4.6k(ish) views on one video. I was really shocked.
check out Hadassah Cordoba. She has done that video series in a great way
yes watch Hadassah! i loveeee her videos!
Logan Paul, jake paul, zoella, ricegum, Alisha Marie, and lastly Roi juice guava juice roi
Angelika Oles already has a series like this, its called "road to irrelevancy"!
queen of staying relatable despite immense success is jenna marbles
She's still so down to earth and so humble. The best thing about her is her ability to accept critisism with grace and take accountability and apologize meaningfully when she makes a mistake. She is just such a great person.
She's the only one I feel people can actually relate too, like most of her videos are staying at home and just doing funny stuff, unlike others.
She's a BABE
@@dangernoodle9961 yeah, her apology for her goldfish was way more genuine and sincere than all those other 'apology' videos combined
The worse part is they are moving to LA for all the wrong reasons :/
I live in LA and HAAAAAAAAATE a lot of LA based youtubers. They all go to the same places, do the same things, eat the same foods it makes me sick. I really avoid it like the bubonic plague.
Samantha Louise Reyes exactly! They obviously move there for the content and because it’s where all the TH-camrs go to live. So they all start doing the same exact stuff and go to the same places and it starts to feel like I’m watching the same videos over and over but with different people in them.
I would openly refuse to move to LA. It catches on fire.
Plz stop moving to california. There are too many people here and in n out is overrated.
And her videos are very pretty, which is a plus, I love her!
Ugh Ashley is great
Ashley's dad clears $327,000/year as of 2017--his salary is public information because he's employed by the state of Maryland. He's the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs for UMBC.
She's never been poor. She's always had the luxury of her parents' safety net.
@@tmolusable how do u know that
Joanna is so humble like she she films on her phone and a camcorder
Hanna Why having a camera is not humble?
Emily Norris I’m not saying it’s not but she has millions of followers but dosent choose to buy expensive equipment
Hanna Isn't it trying too hard? Like "hey look at me, I'am a super successful youtuber but I still choose to film in my phone!"
Emily Norris i mean you have a point
@@EmyN Joanna doesn't film on her phone anymore, she bought a camera like ages ago. She films on both.
im in the age category that has seen the "girly girl exaggerated" content (even though I was a little late) and also the "white girl who will probably move to la" era that's happening/winding down? and it's really just shocking. they really are so different but it seems like other things follow suit, (musically->tiktok) (Instagram changing) (vidcon->playlist) and I guess the new "relatable aesthetic" content creators are changing a lot and it's very interesting to see how they are going to change a new wave of social media culture. (I think it's kinda already going downhill with aesthetic culture kinda turning to flex and unrelatable culture with some creators) but overall how this is going to change.
You know you lost touch with reality when being poor becomes an internet challenge.
bestdressed is easily one of my favorite youtubers who stay humble & actually have a good personality (& content). i even remember her saying that before youtube she was genuinely broke in a college student way but because of youtube, she isn’t anymore. would 100% recommend her channel.
also i see you wearing her earrings ;)
she also CONSTANTLY verbally acknowledges her privilege and acknowledges if something that she is doing is unrealistic which is so refreshing to see in a youtuber :)))
yes!!!!!
ava I noticed the earnings too !! I was looking for a comment about them !
yes!!! ashley is so real and down to earth even though she's obviously extremely successful she never forgets to mention her privilege and her content makes it feel like she's talking to a friend
I LOVE ASHLEY
I love how she's wearing besstdressed-Ashley's earrings!
Was just thinking that!!!!!! I wasnt sure tho so pretty ahhhh
😍
@@maqicool Yesss!! She still seems authentic. And even though she buys alot of clothes, she goes for style over just flexing luxury brands. She loves Reformation but still doesn't go crazy shopping their clothes.
There's also a huge difference between making content focused on relatability and making contents about your daily life. If their channel leans toward sharing their privileged life its not alienating their audience rather it's just how life has been going on for themselves and some people enjoy those type of contents, their rawness, although it might look ignorant to some but we just got to accept what they really are

Iv been binge watching your videos lately love ya
Right after Haley’s complaining about her vacation, I completely unstanned.
edit: she apologized for her behavior lately and it seemed genuine so she’s ok for now! acknowledging your mistakes is growth, right?
Yes yes yes
"Ugh this place doesn't look like all those instagram pics 😭😭"
to me it was as soon as she moved out, the first couple of videos were still really good, and then slowly she just changed and I couldn't watch anymore..
same
I was kinda sad when she got really popular because I liked her, like right before she blew up on social media, and inspired me as a dancer, but now... :/
The "Flex culture" all around, not only on TH-cam is disgusting to me.
Seriously. Like stop?
It's worse now
I feel Like Jenna Marbles is the only sincere youtuber i know of that’s down to earth. Not to mention she doesn’t flex and her content is just trying to be happy with her life and spoil the fuck out of her dogs

shane playing poor is always disrespectful no matter who hes hanging out w, honey ur house has a courtyard so can u Not.
arcadiagay Eh, it’s pretty obvious Shane’s not a superficial guy.
TheKaurK I agree, but it’s still such a slap in the face for people who are genuinely struggling :(
Sure, but maybe a lot of their money might go to paying the mortgage and other Bill's? I think when he says that he means he doesnt have money to spend on things he doesnt need
it annoys me how hes always like "omgg you live in a mamsion i could NEVERRRR" like hunn. you have a mountain basically. but tbh at this point im glad hes finally started wearing clothes that arent covered in likw food and holes
am I the only one who watch youtubers just because I like to watch them and not because I want to relate to them.
Right?
Right?
Exactly
That’s complicated. Most people don’t do it consciously. There’s a few different reasons we follow creators and influencers: they make interesting content, they make content you can relate to and/or are themselves relatable, they have lived you can aspire towards, or they have the type of personality that your friends typically do.
Honestly!
This "era" of youtubers feels like when the The Hills actors were already $rich n famous$ but still acted like they had to work 9 to 5 and live normal lives until the inauthenticity of it all killed the show

And that video she took following Emma Chamberlain around Whole Foods while playing some immature song...
Yep she is relying on that TH-cam money to keep flowing in but if she continues down the path she’s going she’s going to be broke before she realizes what happens. Hopefully she can turn it around.

G M
i don’t like jeffree but no it’s because he doesn’t make many videos specifically to flaunt what he has. yes he does show off what he has but it’s hardly ever the main topic of the video. he also knows he’s extremely rich and doesn’t try to act relatable or poor.
G M i could never like that dude
you literally forget how rich jenna actually is because of how humble of a person she is, and how her content stays the same.
