So in essence, the devs chose to limit the scope of the game and properly polish the content within that scope, instead of spreading themselves too thin? Sounds like a good choice for a game selling for relatively cheap; highlight the experience and leave people wanting more, rather than having more to do but have less fun doing it. Looking forward to watching the LP!
more bigger game companies need to take that approach, i'm definitely gonna get this game myself, i love Dark souls and if this game is a sort of homage to dark souls then i'm all for it, plus it's easy to see the devs of this game really put time, effort and care into it so i would like to show my support
Definitely not biting more that they can chew and I think we can all appreciate that and support them. Excited to see what they can do with proper budget and time on a bigger project.
Well... *assets* are polished in this game. There's a lot in this game, like mechanic coherency and level coherency, that don't feel good *at all* to me personally.
From what I can tell they basically pulled an “outer worlds.” They released a game that showcased what they can do and placed themselves within the view of their audience. Now they can do something a big bigger and more ambitious while knowing that the fan base is on the lookout for them.
Tbh it's still not polished. Hitboxes are janky, combat is floaty, and sound design is pretty bad. I would say it's about the same as lords of the fallen, but with only 3 greatswords and a dual weapon
Considering this being a release from a group of 15 devs is really screaming that this game will have a sequel within next few years. The souls community will surely embrace this game.
I really liked this review because you went in detail as to what the different classes, weapons and shells mean for a person who has no idea what this game is about which other reviewers were lacking and now I am pretty excited about this game.

I’ll pick this up tomorrow, price is fair and to be honest there’s some hidden gems in these smaller experiences just look at hellblade Senuas saga it was so in scope only a few areas and things like that but I really enjoyed the experience and so did a lot of others as it’s getting a bigger and badder sequel on the new series x, I can see the same sort of things for these guys because they’ve done really well with what they had, small team, small budget (presumably) and it still looks great 👍 wish these guys all the best in their next endeavour here’s hoping the souls community can get behind it.
I love your channel, walkthroughs, and opinions. When it comes to a game, I go to you and ACG on whether I make a purchase or not. Thanks for both of you for not being bought out. ❤️
I'm loving this game. Demons souls is my fav souls game and this is the first one I've played (that's including even FromSoft games) that feels like it got the same atmosphere that demons souls had 🙂
Thanks for the uploads and honest reviews. I definitely will be purchasing-I like to support a good effort and help a up and coming studio get some grounding to have more backing for future releases. Who knows they may even release some DLC later-especially if they realize that there’s a fan base building.
I think a big reason they were able to keep their team small is because they outsourced much of their art. The artists and animators required to make a modestly sized game like this would be around 15 or so. Art outsourcing has become a much more common thing in gaming in recent years and really benefits smaller studios looking to give their game a slick coat of paint.
This game really did come out of nowhere, and im even more surprised to learn that the dev is only team of 15 ppl. Thats very impressive i wonder how long this took them to make
I definitely ended up liking this game a lot more than I expected! It wasn’t until I started playing for myself that it changed and lined up so much better. It isn’t as frustratingly hard as I expected-if you played the souls games and sekiro This will be at times even easier than that.
Awesome review and good shell and weapon breakdown. I actually really like the special attacks. I do hope this team gets picked up by a bigger studio and we get a more fleshed-out sequel, as you said. This is an awesome proof of concept for a bigger game.
I'm actually surprised that this game doesn't have a spear/halberd/scythe weapon. Maybe in a dlc or sequel I guess. I've been looking forward to this game and I will be picking this up.
My biggest disappointment with this game has to be the game length. I think that would be because this is a small studio and they are banking on the fact that they can make decent money with this game so that they could hire more resources and possibly make a much bigger sequel. A $30 price does make sense as it is not a big game. If it were some other greedy AAA studio they would have charged $50+ for this much content, so props to the makers of Mortal Shell for this.
Re3 remake was $60/£50 for a 3 hour game at best 🤣 50mins once you know how to speed run it and that was a AAA capcom game. I’m sure these guys will be just fine way back to when the devs first spoke out they always said from the start that it’s not the same scope and size as a ds game and they were honest props to them for not trying to sell fake hype.
Probably people who cant see a good thing for what it is. They were hoping for dark souls clone with new paint. Personally I think this game looks fresh compared to some other souls-likes. While according to cowboy its shorter than expected ,thats probably due to budget. I imagine that if this does well a sequel could be bigger in scope.

I found out about this classic last year but never tried it until today. The combat feels very realistic, similar to Dogma, and the way the enemies react is similar to Tsushima, not as brutal and epic but very similar.

Kinda makes me happy that the company isn't greedy and realizes the game shouldn't be marked at $60 due to the length of the game. I'll be picking this game up next week.
Was hoping the Riposte Animation was going to get corrected at release... oh well. Hopefully they will finish the animation later on. Right now, the riposte animation is good at the start but as the animation finishes, the character just gives up and results back to his default stance almost as if nothing significant even happened. I was hoping the devs would have went back and added a few more key frames which made the animation look like the character is pulling weapon out of the enemy and then returning back to the default position.
After playing the beta for mortal shell, I knew I would be buying the full game. I'd like to jump in today but I'm in the process of moving. I'm sadly going to have to put it on the back burner for a few weeks. At least I'll be able to count on cowboy's walk through if I get stuck.

This kind of scenery is probably the only I thought bloodborne lacked, I want a forest level like this with the foggy green atmosphere, I would love to have that in bloodborne 2,if that ever comes out.

And I thought what the hell and purchased Mortal Shell on Xbox as it looks awesome and hopefully the studio will do well with this release (small devs need more help these days especially) and produce a sequel, that irons out the small wrinkles I see mentioned.

I’m excited for this game it got my interest the beginning of this month when I saw the beta gameplays... picking it up tomorrow for PS4 & probably a physical copy on XB1...
this was a fun game. an homage to dark souls but with just enough mechanical changes to remain fluid while also lulling you into a false sense of security that will get you killed a good amount of times.
The Beta was awesome. Pre ordered it straight away. I've been playing Hellpoint which is another budget souls like that is pretty good fun but can't wait to get into Mortal Shell.
12:36 question with music: possible spoilers, possible spoilers, possible spoilers, Does Gorf the Frog impact music and the soundtrack? I haven’t tried it but online I believe I read he toggles music on and off?

I'm going to now pay I think it's $7 dollars for the extra content. I usually don't pay for extra content but with this game I think it's worth the $7 especially after I got it with pass for "free".
So the resolve is like the battery charges from The Surge? Im def interested in this game. It looks like it borrowed all the right things from all the soulsekiroborne games while still being its own thing.
I mean it looks like I'll enjoy the combat but the zones look really drab. I'm interested in the hardening concept and the elemental weapons. The parry moves seem like they connect weird with the enemies, maybe its just this video. I may check it out eventually.
Played the demo ,enjoyed it quite a bit and gonna play the full product tomorrow. That being said ,I can't help but feel a little dissapointed by the lack of variety in all aspects of the game.Personally I'd like just a little bit more rpg in my soulsborne games ( one reason I could never get into Sekiro).Combat and animations look great but more shell diversity ,or at least more interesting skill trees for them ( not just passive effects and stat increases) would have been great .The same goes for the weapon variety. The game plays great and I'm sure I'll have fun with my playtrough but this looks more of a one and done type of deal rather than a lasting gaming experience.Part of the fun and replayability is games like DS3 ,Nioh (both) and Bloodborne was I got to play around and experiment with different builds, shame this is not the case here.Still gonna support the devs as I believe its a fun game for what it is ( and that is an action game more than an rpg) and in the hopes that one day we'll get a Darksouls senior rather than a junior :).
Hey Cowboy!!! First my greetings, I always follow your channel! since I saw the trailer for this game, and the involvement I'm crazy to play, I'm a big fan of the style and genre that the souls saga popularized, I live in Brazil, including, the game will be located in Brazil in subtitles, but until now , nothing. neither on PlayStation nor on Xbox. I usually play more on PlayStation, because it is in my room, and I saw that the game is 40 GB, you already have it in your hands, right? what size does it occupy on the hard drive, and when will I be able to purchase? and most importantly, the price, they didn't say anything, they just spoke on the 18th and that's it. I'm even half-faced with that, because I'm looking forward to the game. greetings from Brazil!
Just played the game and beat it while watching the let's play and I really enjoyed the experience a few small gripes here and there but all in all I loved it up there with bloodborne Wich is my favorite one.
$30 is pretty good, fuck man I’d pay more just so the devs made more money to hire more people, and grow as a company, put out more solid games, and improve their chops as developers.
the healing mechanic is probably gonna be problem for me i like my Estus usually to be ready on demand on those kind of games this makes me more comfortable but with this it looks like even healing items you gonna have to farm i'm not so sure how to feel about that

“Ohh Elden ring, I doubt you could even imagine it”
Hey Cowboy!!!
$30 is pretty good, fuck man I’d pay more just so the devs made more money to hire more people, and grow as a company, put out more solid games, and improve their chops as developers.
the healing mechanic is probably gonna be problem for me i like my Estus usually to be ready on demand on those kind of games this makes me more comfortable but with this it looks like even healing items you gonna have to farm i'm not so sure how to feel about that
This game looks worth getting.
I wonder if the Devs will be added anything down the road via updates or DLCs?
