Strength builds really seem like an afterthought, or niche. There are fewer weapons, you're not as effective, and it doesn't even level up as effectively as advance or dex.

Great review. I get the feedback but to me, most of them can be explained with them trying to make this game a little more accessible. Example the less confusing level design, stargazers after elites, freedom of playstyle, indicators for backstab or visceral, indicator for NPC update etc.
The thing I really don’t like is the red attacks. Not the aspect that you can only perfect parry and can’t just block or roll through them, but the fact that it is a super video gamey thing in an otherwise pretty atmospheric game. A lot of the attacks are long wind ups anyway so I understand they needed to indicate the difference but I just don’t love how the indication is the enemy turns totally red for no reason.
Great review ! The none linearity of the fromsoft games is what make them so explorable..that overwhelming feeling of finding yourself lost and losing control of a map is priceless, that feeling of drifting away further and further from the bonfire while holding onto your precious souls with no estus left only to finally end up opening a shortcut to that same bonfire . Or landing at a boss fight unwillingly 😅 its priceless as feeling .
This is definitely going to scratch that "soulslike" itch that hasn't been scratched since Sekiro. As much as I enjoyed my time with Elden Ring and Wo Long, I felt some aspects of those games (the open-world of Elden Ring, the dynasty warriors-ness of Wo Long) took away from the "tightness" I was really looking for in a soulslike I do wonder how are the outfits in the full game? Are they all just linens and breeches with the occasional waistcoat? Or, can we expect some diversity?
Good thing is, updates can always fix the s, adding hyper armor, perfect block timeframes etc. I’m loving this game so far. Lies of P is the Neosporin to my Soulsborne itch. Also can’t wait for Lords of the Fallen (2023) another soulslike.
The devs seems really, really invested in taking feedback, they've made a community its post about it. I'm sure with time the little things will be smoothed out nicely.

3:03 this is exactly how I felt playing the demo. My first run of the demo was strength build focusing on blocking & obtaining my health back. My second run focused on a parry build which the game turned into a cake-walk IF you are skilled enough to abuse the deflect window. I was able to defeat the 3 bosses of the demo without moving a single inch (except when dodging unblockables) just by standing still and parrying everything. Of course, this is my surface level opinion from somebody who hasn't played the full game yet. Gonna be jumping into the deluxe today, have fun everyone.
This i think is my provlem. I have beaten all soulsborne (except sekiro) but just never can parry. Just rubbish at it. And even in demo i am literally stuck at that first puppet boss guy. Its actually embarrassing 😂 But have no idea how to beat him. Any tips appreciated 😊
Thanks for the review man. Appreciate your content as it always get me through some tough time in the souls genre! Would be really amazing if you could make a full walkthrough of this one please.
Awesome... had high hopes for this game and you just confirmed them... thanks so much for picking this game up and for the review! Cannot WAIT to see your let's play!
Dude theres p organ upgrades towards a tank build, one reduce dmg while you use a charged attack or an art or reduce your guard lost. For heavy weapon you should go for motricity and capacity and advance or technique if you have elemental dmg, the game stas matter and how you build matter a lot, you can directly upgrade a weapon scaling by modifyng the handle without having to put a point in lets say advance or technique to increase elemental dmg, there are quite a few cubes that are quite strong, for me thats a great system that lets you play however you want.
Hearing the details about the perfect guard/block system really bums me out. I'm just not fast enough any more for those kinds of systems. Oh well. I'll enjoy watching other people play the game. :)
I appreciate developers that have a strong vision for their game re: difficulty, but I hope that "accessibility" options that let the user control timing windows for blocks become the norm in the future. I have money. I have time on my hands. I buy lots of games. But I don't have the reflexes I used to.

I'm sure a lot of people appreciate the focus on combat and the linearity. It's nice to have a game that doesn't require exploring through a huge open world map and I think that focus adds to the game.
Played for about 10 hours so far and god damn that parry window is tight. The animations don't help either as it's hard to figure out when to block. Loving the game so far otherwise though 👍🏻
Hopefully they will tweak the block timing for perfect block (guard) over the next month or so to make the timing more lenient. It is a single-player game, so there is less of a need to jump in at launch and I could see the play experience improving if the developers are listening to the player base, including streamers.
The poise/stagger (or extreme lack thereof) is horrendous. You can be staggered into oblivion but rarely do it to enemies...and like you said one hit completely negates AND depletes your fable attacks. Because of that, heavier weapons slower R2 attacks pretty much become useless. And I completely agree, the perfect block system needs some work. ESPECIALLY on some of the bosses that jump around the screen making it near impossible to time. Good game but needs some adjustments for sure. Also, the backstab window is TOO DAMN SMALL.
I hate and love this game. The world, the story, graphics, and especially the music for me were all absolutely perfect. Spot on. But notice I haven't said anything about the actual gameplay, and usually I'm the type to skip every cutscene and dialogue. Parrying does not feel rewarding, especially for the amount of times you have to perform them, AND the timings for them. Damage the player inflicts is way too low in NG+ and onwards due to really weird diminishing returns early 50s in stats. This low damage is against bosses with sometimes up to two GIANT health bars, and their own massive damage. Typing this, I just fought Laxasia in NG+2 and she could actually one shot in certain circumstances on my character. Now, my biggest issue with this game: Delayed attacks. I did NOT like Elden Ring because of the delayed attacks being its artificial difficulty. Nothing here is like Sekiro, fluid and reactable. Every boss in this game crutches this issue, and I do mean every boss. Even basic enemies do. Everything just loves to pull punches, and them BAM hit you when you thought it would have at least a little travel time. I believe the Sekiro parry system shouldn't have been here. Don't get me wrong, Sekiro is my favourite 'souls' game, but either a focus on dodging or a focus on parrying has to go to make things feel fair and not outweighed. Maybe that's just me.
Perfect guards seemed a bit inconsistent to me, definitely agree on the identity confusion point. There's also the thing where alot of your attacks require too much commitment, In Sekiro, you are able to go into block or attempt parries relatively quickly after doing an attack but that's not how it is here.
The only thing that disappoints me here is that the blocking and partying is more encouraged and viable than rolling. Definitely more of a Souls roll guy than a Sekiro party guy. Still haven’t finished that game
2h in I’ve died a lot but I love the fact that it’s not impossible to keep up with the mysteries. I don’t have to google how to move on or where to go. I love ds but I’m a Sekiro head n blood bourne is up there n I’d say this is fusion. As a Sekiro veteran the blocking scratches my itch 😅 Even the sound is the same ahh. Great review, can’t wait to get little help from your play though IF I need it. U literally held my hand so many times 😂❤❤
A big problem with the game is that a lot of essential mechanics and combat styles that you normally would have in general for any souls like, is locked behind a skill tree. i.e roll dodge when grounded, increase "estus flasks," the ability to dodge or block the red attacks. Still fun though, can't wait for Wizard of OZ sequel
This is a very good review.Thank you.Being linear isn't an issue .i don't have a lot of time for playing so i will have a game that will allow me to have some fun.
It's funny how you mention that you found it a little too linear. I'm currently on chapter 2 and I've been wandering around the city without a breeze of where I'm supposed to go. Totally lost.
Love the reviews and the points you make, all I would say is my understanding is this was intended to be a Souls-lite game for people. So the fact that the levels were linear was a good thing in that respect. But I completely understand why big Souls players wouldn't like that.
Heyyyy brother, cowboy. Your review for this game is absolutely perfect down to your wise calculated choice of words I knew this game is beyond our time when watching the trailer in ps store thank you!!! (It's like the game has a mind of its own) ❤😂

Let's try this again. Don't listen to me I'm a dumbass. Cowboys the one with the knowledge. After getting back at it the game is actually really good but damn it's hard. Just gotta get the feel of it and then it becomes enjoyable. But damn them first boss attempts will really kill you but if you stay at it the games well worth it
Not only the perfect guard is so tight but the handles with parry fables are a total different timing. But i am still loving the game the weapon system is so fun too

I've been quite obsessed about this game for weeks now (I'm just working on platinum on my ng+ playthrough). I just love the combat, it feels like sekiro + bloodborne, only way less punishing. The atmosphere and setting are also just brilliant, it's just so refreshing yet familiar. I agree that levels and progression are just too linear, I would have loved branching paths and hidden bosses. As far as I can remember the only optional boss is Mad Clown Puppet. As for legion arms? Never used them or even felt the need to.
Definitely mess around with the arms because they really do help a lot and I think if you try them, you’ll realize how beneficial it is to mix them in your play style

For those who didn't play the demo: The deflection works like Sekiro's, it doesn't disbalance the enemy for a riposte like in BB. Standard block: recoverable hp loss (easy but costly) Perfect guard: no hp loss and build enemy's nonvisible stagger meter. eg. When the Watchman boss does a chain attack, chain deflections are needed. This is the core part of the game and everything else is built around it. The nerfed roll during lock on is to encourage deflection.
I definitely agree that there is an issue with the game leaning so heavily into the perfect guard system, while giving you a character that has very low reactivity. The reason this system works so well in Sekiro is that Wolf can cancel an attack to block at any time, with lightning speed, and in quick succession if needed. In lies of p, you cant cancel attacks, there is recovery time from any action, and the block itself comes out quite slowly. The perfect guard window is also pretty damn tight, as you mentioned. They needed to either dial this back to a playstyle option, like i m DS/ER/BB, or massively increase animation speed and reactivity.
Public service announcement: there is no way to pause the game. So, if you need to go to the bathroom or something, you won't be able to pause. Just saying, because I'm assuming this review will not mention it, like basically none of them do.
That’s because all Soulsborne games, which is the genre this game originates from, have no pause. It’s a non-issue that doesn’t necessitate being mentioned
@NoNo-eh2cu 1.) Sekiro has a pause button 2.) Elden ring sort of has a pause button 3.) the games where there truly wasn't a pause button had a strong multiplayer function, so it made some sense. Lies of P. doesn't
Thanks for the review, always good stuff. I am a big fan of Sekiro and Japanese themed games, but I think that's a pretty good soulslike too. Strength builds really seem like an afterthought, or niche. There are fewer weapons, you're not as effective, and it doesn't even level up as effectively as advance or dex.
I had nothing but fun with the demo. So I’m excited to play tomorrow
How are you playing it tomorrow?

For sure. Just finished DS1 for the first time a few days ago and this sounds like a perfect follow up.

Thank you for this review as well cowboy!
i respect fighting cowboy opinion, he never lead us wrong but lies of p maybe very linear isnt such a bad thing which is also understandable but if you look at god of war, its also very linear and gotten high praise how good it is. so lies of p being very linear shouldnt be a big deal but i do wish it had different paths you could've explored like in bloodborne fearing the unknown what's out there since its a souls like game after all
I’ve seen a few comparisons to god of war. That’s really disappointing cause that game sucked.

Souls likes are just peak action/rpgs . I hope they never go away . I love these games , excellent challenge, excellent customization , fantastic world/stories/lore , 2 percent (badass cutscenes) 98 percent amazing gameplay !
@@TrueGamer22887skill issue
I understand that linear levels can take away from the experience, but still be fun to play. I rarely got lost in DS3 and Sekiro.
what I also really liked was the 'earn an extra pull cell if you have none anymore' , keeps you locked in during the end of a bossfight
As much as I enjoyed my time with Elden Ring and Wo Long, I felt some aspects of those games (the open-world of Elden Ring, the dynasty warriors-ness of Wo Long) took away from the "tightness" I was really looking for in a soulslike
I do wonder how are the outfits in the full game? Are they all just linens and breeches with the occasional waistcoat? Or, can we expect some diversity?
I was hoping cowboy would cover this can't wait for the walkthrough
Good thing is, updates can always fix the s, adding hyper armor, perfect block timeframes etc. I’m loving this game so far. Lies of P is the Neosporin to my Soulsborne itch.
Also can’t wait for Lords of the Fallen (2023) another soulslike.
I agree. Everytime I mention this I get told to git gud. But I beat Malenia without leveling up, and I had an easier time with her than these bosses
The devs seems really, really invested in taking feedback, they've made a community its post about it. I'm sure with time the little things will be smoothed out nicely.
Most detailed review yet. Thanks Cowboy! Can't wait to play this next week.

This game shocked me with how much I liked it. That feeling of charging up a strong attack after a perfect parry for a stagger is just ooh
been following since you were doing your original bloodborne playthrough, much love and glad you're covering LoP!
@DMGamanda dude check Ong Bal's videos showing no hit boss fights in the demo. It really helps it 'click' in your brain what you're supposed to do.
Cowboy, you are truly one of the best in gaming. Thank you for this video.
Thanks for the review man.
Appreciate your content as it always get me through some tough time in the souls genre!
Would be really amazing if you could make a full walkthrough of this one please.
Hopefully they update it to expand the perfect deflect window
Awesome... had high hopes for this game and you just confirmed them... thanks so much for picking this game up and for the review!
Incredible work after completely mastering AC6. We salute cowboy
Hearing the details about the perfect guard/block system really bums me out. I'm just not fast enough any more for those kinds of systems. Oh well. I'll enjoy watching other people play the game. :)
Dont give up, Skeleton!
Don't you dare go hollow
Arise now, ye Tarnished.
Same, couldn't stand sekiro for the blocking bs on top of a limited weapon variety. Wo long was trash as well for forcing parries.
@@killthepain101 so you didn't like sekiro because of the best mechanic that the game has? 😂
I appreciate developers that have a strong vision for their game re: difficulty, but I hope that "accessibility" options that let the user control timing windows for blocks become the norm in the future. I have money. I have time on my hands. I buy lots of games. But I don't have the reflexes I used to.
Been excited for this one for months! Thank you, Cowboy! We can always count on you! ❤

I'm sure a lot of people appreciate the focus on combat and the linearity. It's nice to have a game that doesn't require exploring through a huge open world map and I think that focus adds to the game.
Thanks for the review. Your videos work well with my brain. As a side note your Elden Ring walkthrough got my through the game! Very grateful!
Eres el indicado cuando ocupamos ayuda en cualquier souls like. Eres grande vaquero!
Great game....thanks for the walk through videos. Helped alot with the final 2 bosses!
The only review I've been waiting for.
The only thing that disappoints me here is that the blocking and partying is more encouraged and viable than rolling. Definitely more of a Souls roll guy than a Sekiro party guy. Still haven’t finished that game
I also still haven't...but I'm damn determined to finish this one. 🎉🎉🎉
Sekiro is absolutely amazing u must play it
2h in I’ve died a lot but I love the fact that it’s not impossible to keep up with the mysteries.
I love cowboy reviews man, always so informative and just eargasmic
A big problem with the game is that a lot of essential mechanics and combat styles that you normally would have in general for any souls like, is locked behind a skill tree. i.e roll dodge when grounded, increase "estus flasks," the ability to dodge or block the red attacks. Still fun though, can't wait for Wizard of OZ sequel

(It's like the game has a mind of its own) ❤😂
Finished this game yesterday and while it has some camera issues and boss fights that just feel like punishment that fun, I really enjoyed my time with it
13:20 not against that clown in the wine cellar basement, ive never wanted to run pass a mini boss so hard in my life, double hit box attacks super agro i had to cheese him by running back the way i came from and he’ll start to slowly walk away backwards looking at me and you’ll be able to get some hits on him without him attacking

Definitely playing this what I’m hoping they eventually reveal is multiplayer coop (instead of only summoning a specter) and/or at least some PVP. I’m also curious how the WoLong crossover will turn out- that is so random. We shall see.
I think it’s just a weapon. But I’m glad wo long is getting some love. Super underrated IMO
Sorry to come in eight months late 😓 but I just finished my play through and the whole time I was like why tf is there an outfit and weapon from Wo Long here 😭 completely forgot collabs were a thing. You just gave me the lightbulb moment 👍
You going to do a full walkthrough? Please say yes?
Somewhere in his Updates, Cowboy said he's gonna do the walkthru. I'd say it's very probable since he scratched the idea of doing the Armored Core Walkthru.
I would be surprised if he didn't
Honestly not sure if it's needed. Because of how linear the game is a walkthrough doesn't really feel necessary.

I've been wanting a borne-like for so long I'm so happy
Great review, I agree with your point of weakness for design and combat.
Keep this play through review format. Definitely unique
Love you Cowboy, love you as a person, honest and smart one, love you as incredibly skilled player. Totally trust your opinion. Keep up excellent work!
*Lies of P is a very good game that is similar to Bloodborne and Souls games. Also Lies of P is similar to SteelRising video game.Lies of P keeps on getting 8 out of 10 from most reviewers on TH-cam and even sometimes 9 out of 10 from some reviewers on TH-cam.*
For those who didn't play the demo: The deflection works like Sekiro's, it doesn't disbalance the enemy for a riposte like in BB.
Standard block: recoverable hp loss (easy but costly)
Perfect guard: no hp loss and build enemy's nonvisible stagger meter. eg. When the Watchman boss does a chain attack, chain deflections are needed.
This is the core part of the game and everything else is built around it. The nerfed roll during lock on is to encourage deflection.
The problem with that is the deflect window is way tighter than Sekiro, it should’ve been around .5 seconds or so like Cowboy suggested.
Your comment is on every single lies of p video...do something new lol
i noticed the exact same thing about the parry like u mentioned while i was playing the demo.
Everyone else complaining that its just bloodborne reskinned as Pinocchio.
Me super excited its bloodborne reskinned as Pinocchio
Lies of P. doesn't
the only person i bin waiting on. im here when that walk through is ready.
Thanks for the review, always good stuff. I am a big fan of Sekiro and Japanese themed games, but I think that's a pretty good soulslike too. I've already pre-ordered lords of fallen because dark fantasy is a bit more appealing to me and I've got cyberpunk dlc and like a dragon gaiden too. Jeez, so many good games and not much time to play them
finally found someone that critic about the parry window, had a lots of review about the game, and swear non of them wanna touch on the negative part of this game..
Yeah the deflect timing and the easy bosses prevent the game from being a 10/10 as opposed to a 9/10.
Well if anything "Soulslikes" are getting more polished and diverse which is good for the ecosystem.
