I think the reaon there is so much hate is because forspoken had real potential to be the 'magic' game. And for many it did not fulfill. People had witcher expectations and got an in my opinion JRPG like game. Wich isn't for everyone and not for me either. So it's mostly just disappointment.

This review reminds me a lot of my experience for Midnight Suns. The story, writing and the dialogue were not great at all, but the game play and the card based battle system and all that got me hooked and that carried me through. Even part way through I just started skipping dialogue at the social system just to get back to the battles. I feel like that will be Forspoken for me, I replayed the demo after spending time away, and I enjoyed the combat a lot as well. Gonna grab it on sale for sure. Good review!
@@MemoryMori exactly! Not all games that get released need to be an 8 or 9 out of 10 to be considered a must play. Some 6’a and 7’s can just be enjoyable in their own right. Just like we need to praise more AA developers for giving us games that are just decent and don’t really need to reinvent the wheel. If you are having a good time with it, then that’s all that should matter.

You're probably one of the most underrated reviewers I know rn, your reviews are very much to the point and straight forward from the pov of somebody who plays AND enjoys various genres of video games. Most reviewers even TH-camrs these days don't seem like they enjoy video games and only play them for that sake of reviewing them.
Thank you for this review. I was really excited about this game but the demo and recent reviews had me questioning if the game was worth a playthrough. This definetly changed my mind. Knowing that the magic and parkour are pretty solid (even if it takes a while for it to come together) makes me look forward to playing it.

Seem like a fun movement and combat system, and a possibly simply platinum trophy to get. Im not buying it at full price but when the price drops I will for sure pick it up to try it out for myself. So many people are really just hopping on the hate wave just as they do the hype wave of other video games. I'm of the perspective that I dont need every game to be some master peice, I just care if it is fun. I would obviously prefer a master peice, and those are the games I would gladly pay full price for. But I honestly don't understand the extreme hate and over criticsim of this game. If you KNOW this is something that you're not going to like, why bother continuing to watch videos on it. Its a waste of your time that could be spent on doing someting that you DO like.

This review is so refreshing. As someone who has watched about the first 3-4 hours of this game, I'm genuinely baffled by the level of vitriol spiraling around Forspoken. (I feel like inherent bias and the lackluster demo come into play here.) It has very real flaws, but overall, a 7/10 score is still a fun game to play. Seeing what I have, I dislike the constant banter (providing an option to minimize it on Square's part was a smart move) and would probably be irritated by having to stop playing to watch cutscenes over and over, but the traversal and gameplay look enjoyable with a pretty average story. Also, your commentary on Frey being too cynical is spot-on when the world she's whisked into is a vast improvement from the life she was familiar with.

I mean she had a rough life of course she'll be abrasive and downright rude, Frey does grow as the story develops, similar to every arrogant and abrasive characters out there.
I'm not sure, but I think the reason most people are so upset about this game is because of how it was first introduced way back when the PS5 was first being announced. That whole "what next gen will look like" thing. Then the bad trailers with the bad cringe dialog came out and it just snowballed from there. My best guess anyway. Just finished the game on hard. It took me 18hrs for the story line. I really enjoyed it besides its many faults. The fighting system is just really enjoyable and made it worth it in my opinion.
A better baseball analogy for this game would be-imagine absolutely loving baseball, and looking forward to the biggest, most hyped-up baseball match of the entire series. So hyped that they charge almost twice as much as normal to get into see the game. Then, when inside, you're instead subjected to one of the most poorly played games of baseball that you've seen in the last decade. That is the Forspoken experience for many people.
Here before the premier: For the most part when they first announced the game I was partially excited by it being an Isekai game and the movement and abilities looked fun. But after witnessing more gameplay it did become clear it probably wasn't for me. The world looked empty and the story didn't seem all that interesting at all. Once I saw the combo system I checked out from personally playing.

The reason why so many people are so passionate about hating this game is because it was INSANELY hyped up, more so than the other games you mentioned.
Based on what I've seen so far from the Let's Play, I agree in general with Cowboy's review. The combat and movement of this game looks very smooth and fluid and a lot of fun, and I think the graphics are nice too. I also really enjoy Cuff's dialog; to me I find him very funny and amusing. Frey (the protagonist), however, I just really don't like her character. I keep feeling watching the Let's Play like she's just really annoying, like someone I wouldn't want to be or hang around, but I think Cowboy put it very well, how it feels like she just forces swear words in too often and she's just so cynical about things all time. She also seems at times like she's intentionally trying to be obtuse, like she expects everyone to understand her, her language, phrases, behavior, etc, but she just visibly gets annoyed by their behavior and customs. Overall, it looks to me like the good outweighs the bad, so I'd be interested in playing it, but I can't see myself paying full price for it.

I am 100% cool with aggressively average games, I kinda love them actually. Evil West was also aggressively average and had huge issues, I LOVED it. So this very genuine honest review makes me wanna give it a try even more because the combat looks so fun later on. I played the demo so my expectations were tempered prior to launch. "except the cat" I remember a movie in which someone believed that "It was just a f***ing [dog]" was a good candidate for famous last words. Pets are family. In Frey's case, it's the only actual family she had. I haven't seen the whole game yet, but to me, Frey didn't come across as unlikeable at all. Cynical, yes, but that's to some degree understandable given her past life. You don't switch that off like a light switch. Other than that, great review. I have a feeling I know why some people are so aggressive spreading hate about this game, but there's no need to go into that. In any case, it's clear that not every game can be a 10/10 or 9/10, and there's always going to be games out there who didn't reach their potential. But just because a game isn't what people hoped doesn't mean it's an abject disaster.
I'm baffled to the hate this game generates as well, agree with the take it's an AA game pretending to be a AAA game. I'll keep watching the LP since the combat looks fun and you're having fun with it. If nothing else this magic system should be refined/ copied by another developer or even this studio if Square doesn't terminate them.

As for the price, I really think being a new IP along with a few other things, they should have listed it at $60. However I used some reward points and a gift card so for $34 I decided to pick it up. Otherwise I probably would've waited for a sale because this is one I definitely feel I'll enjoy but regret spending full price on. Shit, by the time Amazon actually ships this it might be on sale. Still pending shipment despite pre-ordering it. FFXV was a dam good game. The problem was that it only revolved around Noctis and not the party members who's stories, if I recall, were sold as DLC. This game kind of found itself in the middle of a weird intersection of being really mediocre, having strange marketing, and off the back of lots of mediocre SE releases, SE studio sales, and just baffling SE strategy decisions in recent years. If it wasn't an SE game I don't think it would get anywhere as much heat. Also $70.
I feel like most people are missing the point, this is not just an average game, it's an average game that is trying to force the 80 euro/dollars price point as standard. It's not revolutionary, it's not master-fully crafted, it's just a normal game. Enjoyable? Yes. Worth 80 bucks? No. Price-value isn't there, thus, the negative experience. Stop buying over-priced average before it beco es the norm.

I bought because I really enjoyed the combat in the demo. Slight buyers remorse but whatever. Its combat is fun...there are some goofy quests though..like a tour in the opener. And the story and dialog really feels like your supposed to fill it with bits of your imagination..I dunno. I like it though..the magic is so cool and fun

As someone whose played around 5 hours so far.... I'm enjoying it actually and agree with around the 7 rating. I love the combat! The graphics are pretty good. The story is mainly simple and generic like you said so far. The world is pretty empty but enemies are everywhere. Overall I'm happy with my purchase I mean I've bought way worse for 70$ so I won't complain

Its on the shorter side, so will probably give it a go at some point over a longer weekend and get it on sale. Absolutely not paying 80 (!) euros for this. That is just bonkers. I can get 2 - 4 great games for that price.

Based on what I've seen so far from the Let's Play, I agree in general with Cowboy's review. The combat and movement of this game looks very smooth and fluid and a lot of fun, and I think the graphics are nice too. I also really enjoy Cuff's dialog; to me I find him very funny and amusing. Frey (the protagonist), however, I just really don't like her character. I keep feeling watching the Let's Play like she's just really annoying, like someone I wouldn't want to be or hang around, but I think Cowboy put it very well, how it feels like she just forces swear words in too often and she's just so cynical about things all time. She also seems at times like she's intentionally trying to be obtuse, like she expects everyone to understand her, her language, phrases, behavior, etc, but she just visibly gets annoyed by their behavior and customs.
Overall, it looks to me like the good outweighs the bad, so I'd be interested in playing it, but I can't see myself paying full price for it.

The game is amazing. I hate the cursing because my daughter would love this game. By the way....this is part of my theory that SONY took lost soul aside and stripped it to make about 4 different games. This is one of them.

Did I enjoy it enough to go back and platinum it? SURE DID! All the people review bombing this really got me mad too like, I just didn’t get it! I am 100% cool with aggressively average games, I kinda love them actually. Evil West was also aggressively average and had huge issues, I LOVED it.
So this very genuine honest review makes me wanna give it a try even more because the combat looks so fun later on. I played the demo so my expectations were tempered prior to launch.

Fun fact: anyone who says “ps2 graphics” to a game released in the last decade, has never played a ps2. Good review man. I feel ya its like if a games not 9/10 then its automatically garbage. I personally love Outriders its my favorite lootershooter, thats a 7/10 critically

I haven't seen the whole game yet, but to me, Frey didn't come across as unlikeable at all. Cynical, yes, but that's to some degree understandable given her past life. You don't switch that off like a light switch.
Other than that, great review. I have a feeling I know why some people are so aggressive spreading hate about this game, but there's no need to go into that. In any case, it's clear that not every game can be a 10/10 or 9/10, and there's always going to be games out there who didn't reach their potential. But just because a game isn't what people hoped doesn't mean it's an abject disaster.
I'm baffled to the hate this game generates as well, agree with the take it's an AA game pretending to be a AAA game. I'll keep watching the LP since the combat looks fun and you're having fun with it. If nothing else this magic system should be refined/ copied by another developer or even this studio if Square doesn't terminate them.

As for the price, I really think being a new IP along with a few other things, they should have listed it at $60. However I used some reward points and a gift card so for $34 I decided to pick it up. Otherwise I probably would've waited for a sale because this is one I definitely feel I'll enjoy but regret spending full price on. Shit, by the time Amazon actually ships this it might be on sale. Still pending shipment despite pre-ordering it.
FFXV was a dam good game. The problem was that it only revolved around Noctis and not the party members who's stories, if I recall, were sold as DLC. In terms of the game I had a blast playing it, though. Just wasn't enough FF to feel and be a FF game imo.

You too tend to air on the side of unbiased, have common sense, etc. Simply put I feel we can both objectively view something for what it is. We look at what is is objectively and give an honest, unbiased opinion on something. Something that is clearly lacking in todays world of clickbait, hater-aide fueled opinions.

This game kind of found itself in the middle of a weird intersection of being really mediocre, having strange marketing, and off the back of lots of mediocre SE releases, SE studio sales, and just baffling SE strategy decisions in recent years. If it wasn't an SE game I don't think it would get anywhere as much heat. Also $70.

I feel like most people are missing the point, this is not just an average game, it's an average game that is trying to force the 80 euro/dollars price point as standard.
It's not revolutionary, it's not master-fully crafted, it's just a normal game. Enjoyable? Yes. Worth 80 bucks? No.
Price-value isn't there, thus, the negative experience.
Stop buying over-priced average before it beco es the norm.

I bought because I really enjoyed the combat in the demo. Slight buyers remorse but whatever. Its combat is fun...there are some goofy quests though..like a tour in the opener. And the story and dialog really feels like your supposed to fill it with bits of your imagination..I dunno. I like it though..the magic is so cool and fun

As someone whose played around 5 hours so far.... I'm enjoying it actually and agree with around the 7 rating. I love the combat! The graphics are pretty good. The story is mainly simple and generic like you said so far. The world is pretty empty but enemies are everywhere. Overall I'm happy with my purchase I mean I've bought way worse for 70$ so I won't complain
My god, thank you for this. It was needed and then some. You picked the words right out of my brain. Like you, I have no idea what's going on. Between people complaining for some f-bombs while Gears is fine and even FFVIIR's Barrett gets no hate? This whole "woke" thing? C'mon now. Even Karak who I respect wholly for reviews, I give him the benefit of doubt because I think he just didn't like it plain and simple. Forspoken won't likely be on anyone's GOTY list but so much around this game is ridiculous. I'm having fun despite all the issues it does have and you know, that's all that matters in the end.
