The fruits are the only source of sweetness, and there is only a single layer of them on the cake. You cut off a big old piece from the kiwi section as you are practically drooling over it. You take a bite and... the entire cake tastes like it was made out of communion wafers. If you see 75% of a plain white cake sitting on a table, you can safely assume it was originally covered with fruit toppings, but they were all used to sweeten the quarter of cake that was eaten.

I thought Mortal Shell was great. Just wish it was about twice as long with more shells and character customization. I love your idea of a lantern or marker system so you can better navigate the world.
My favorite souls-like to date. Hardening is amazing, and I actually really liked all the bosses except for the end of the Obsidian area, and tbh the Mace-Staff absolutely rules. I also LOVE the environments past Fallgrim; the flame area has those huge statues of the veiled witch queens, and the winter area is super vertical and the transition from the graves to the underground winter area didn't make much sense (how do you get snow there), but I liked it. I also think that the fire area could have been longer, but I really liked that one the most. Overall I would give it a 9/10, but I really just like the imagery and the voice acting alot. In addition I didn't have as many complaints about the combat loop, I felt like it was very satisfying.
Honesty I think there is slight problem. The souls series started with Demon Souls and the combat despited being exciting was just a part of the overal thing. Dark Souls made it more focused and every subsequent souls or souls like game put some spin on the formula, but as far as I can see these types of games now come with some gimmic or two but never trully inovate. Guess I just think that this style was at the peak with DS 3 and now it is too stagnant to peek my interest.
@sgt dornan I didn't mean to imply that DS 1,2 or 3 were not guilty of it. I think that combat came into its maturity in DS 3 and of course Bloodborn. What I ment is that this style of games stayed stagnant for far too long and now, well it does not have the same appeal.
Peaked at dks1. Dks 1 had some features and much more world building that made it a nicer experience than DeS, dks2 was straight trash, dks3 had nice QoL upgrades but was less meaningful in plot and world building than Dks1.
Gotta say I loved Using Tiel and Martyr's Blade. It just felt nice to be an acolyte weilding a holy weapon putting all they have into their faith that this relic would grant them passage through the unforgiving world. I might have gotten a little TOO into it lol.
This is the most fairly priced game I have ever purchased. Great game and the $7 DLC is a must have. So much value, this is definitely a must have game for anyone that loves the "Souls like" play style.

Legit almost crying when you said "bunkum" 😂 haven't heard that phrase used in, I'd say a decade at least, and this reminded me what an amazing phrase it is and that I should use it more 😂😂
I really enjoyed this game, though it has to be said that hardening in the middle of a jump attack seemed to be a pretty powerful technique for kicking much ass. Look forward to what they bring out next: if Deck 13 can go from LotF to The Surge 2, these guys can surely also learn & grow.
I think this game got the familiarity system idea from Nioh. More of it will unlock more special traits and some of them can transfer to other equipment too.
exactly, sad that the game was too short and little bosses count. However it is a very very unique approach and innovative indeed. I actually had 2 shells maxed at the end of my first playthrough
Annihilation!! 🤌 one of my favorite books/movie AND score! Ugh 😩 And the fact that they had some Moderat at the end there just...🤌🤌🤌🤌 You, sir, have excellent taste. Thank you.
@@KirkWilliams300 I wish I could study it but unfortunately there are no tutors in my area. HEMA wasn't really a thing in my country until just a few years ago when they started opening schools in the major cities. As of now I only watch and read up on the subject, maybe one day I'll have the opportunity to actually try it.
I enjoyed the bosses. I'm not particularly great at souls like because my play style is more hack and slash. So the bosses gave me a good challenge. But I definitely see how they aren't too challenging for better players. But like you said with the items changing your play style, using the great sword, or whatever it's called, made me slow down a bit and time things more. So this game really changed my play style too.
I love the game, a bit short and i feeled like it can be done more, but then I think about the number of people in team that develop the game and its price, and I think it was nice. Maybe in the future, if this team make success we will see a more complex mortal Shell with all the stuff lacking in this one title
Enemy tracking is a nightmare, indeed. Enjoying the game so far, I'm so utterly hooked by its dark gritty art style though, I believe I would even say I'm ' liking ' it. However, hardening is really not my cup o' tea, I'm terrible at both parrying & evading, so I'm usually a ' shield guy ' in these games, so it's quite hard to get the hang of it here.
This video is great! An amazing mix and funny, informative a nice review that doesn’t rely on nothing but other game references/comparisons and quite “kid friendly” I guess? I would just like to say that I liked the map design and structure of fallgrim, more than anything in the game. Exploring it, finding all loot and learning the layout while clearing the mobs with starting gear was the most enjoyment I got out of the game. I honestly wish it was bigger.
@@keymash-aimciamciamalk8630 no real magic but you can upgrade your abilities. The hardening takes some time to get used to cuz it's not like a normal shield, but once you work it into your flow of attacks, you'll feel like a beast!!!.

The first hour or so is challenging, after that it becomes quite easy, considering how short the game is they couldn't maintain that challenge throughout the whole thing.
I guess that’s an issue that can be accounted to the general freedom of the game? Since players can do the shrines/crypts in basically any order it would be difficult to maintain a consistently increasing difficulty throughout
@@jackbassindale4336 Dark souls 1-3, Sekiro, Bloodborne, Nioh 1-2 can maintain their challenge for dozens of hours though, Mortal Shell had a very very small team of developers which is the real reason why it is really short and easy game.
"descriptions are unlocked by getting familiarity" transistor did this. Honestly, didn't really work, because it meant the pace and information on the story was decided by guesswork of which items would reveal what. Probably works better in a game where just tidbits of lore are revealed as opposed to character motivations.
Don't like this game. Tried several times to get into it. Thought it would be smiler enough to DS/Bloodborne to keep me interested.... but just got frustrated at too many features.
I would say that a lot can be forgiven since the developer is a smaller group of people. But hopefully this game does well enough that we can see a sequel with improvements to what they've learned making this game.
My biggest complaint so far is that all the of the weapons have exactly the same base damage even though the massive 2h sword is slower and heavier it still does the same damage as the starting sword, same with the other 2 weapons.
idk bro I managed to get the whole main area map in my head so it wasn't really a maze to me. I finished the game a month ago and I still remember the map. I know pretty much every mushroom locations to far without having to wait minutes for them to recharge because you just end up running from one to the last and restarting the loop. I'm currently playing demon's souls and it's a nice game but I like the combat in mortal shell a lot more especially because of the hammer and chisel and it's first L1 R1 special ability and then using parry and riposte on the bosses with soloman. Like not even joking with the combots and tactics I had I was doing 500 or more damage to the bosses in 10 seconds because you can pretty much be invincible 2 times, 1 during hardening and 1 during the special ability attacks
I'd argue that the bosses were a high point. Each of them was fairly unique. Fire guy was very tanky and hard to stagger, not leaving many openings on his own and being countered by hardening to squeeze in extra damage. Ice Martyr was very weak to parrying, as it gives both damage and a full stagger, yet he plays around with his timings to encourage you to be patient, all the while teleporting quickly around to discourage hardening. Crucix was... kind of awful, honestly. His second phase is super tedious, though his first phase is interesting in discouraging high-aggression by making it so his poise is easily broken but his younger brother puts him on the defense. In exchange, his offense is pretty easy to shut down with hardening and parrying, play defensive. The Final Boss feels like a culmination of all of these; with powerful but open attacks, moderate poise, high health, and unique mechanics that both set him apart and make it feel like you've mastered the game when you fight him. The addition of weak adds into the fight also help call upon the skills of spatial management most of Fallgrim teaches, especially since they're your Parry Heal in the fight and can be killed in one shot otherwise. The Dodge/Parry/Harden system was an absolutely INCREDIBLE design choice. It does aggression better than Bloodborne by allowing you to instantly become defensive for a short time. However, the timer on it heavily discourages reactive play, more encouraging you to learn enemy startups so you know exactly when to leap into the fray. My only complaints about the game are how annoying some of the level design and enemies are. The Greatsword Ghosts in the fire zone sucked to fight one on one, much less the 2v1 you get later. And the enemies are in general so tanky that you're better off just skipping most of them. However, I did like the open-ended progression of the game for the most part, leaving all enemies (roughly) scaling the same, and the lack of teleporting bonfires and dedicated healing, along with the Bonfires being spaced VERY far apart made every trek a difficult, but fair feeling struggle. Only near the end of the game did I feel that they just started randomly throwing enemies at you.
I enjoyed the game for what what length it had - it is a nice entry into the genre of "Soulsborne loveletters", although the few environments and what I felt like lack of engaging world building made me like it less than it probably deserves. Having the "story" told through items and interactable objects isn't a bad move, I just think it lacked the framing mechanism of the Souls games, where the basic premise at least in some regard is explained at the beginning of the game (ie. the tale of Demons/Fire/Beasts) and the game itself then proceeds to expand upon it through in-game lore. Mortal Shell by comparison is more like "This is you and stuff happens for some reason" which isn't really expanded much upon throughout the game. It's pretty neat how the shells have their own story lines, but I never really figured out the reason why we were a pasty humanoid parasite, why we were supposed to defeat the "big bad", why things seemingly have gone to shit and why the world can change into a nightmare version of itself. Combat was "ok" though once I learned to use hardening properly, the enemies didn't really stand a chance unless they managed to get me into a position where moving around and waiting for the hardening cool down to end was impossible. I found that every fight could basically be won by baiting an attack sequence, hardening the last or a slow strike, counter attacking and then dodging away, which combat quite repetitive. The basic flow is not that different from other Souls games, but the complete invincibility of hardening on NG and the ability to dodge as well just makes it really easy to exploit. Also, the "parry" timing felt a bit off to me to a point where learning to parry just became annoying and only used when I really needed a health regen and I also never used the other Sigil modes because of this. Graphically it's pretty nice although the Obisidian area did cause my FPS to tank a bit with all the reflective surfaces in the courtyard area. I also found the various areas kind of small and inconsequential like they were just random props to fight enemies in rather than actual places with a purpose in the world. Ie. why do the catacombs suddenly lead to an ice or fire area? Why is the Obsidian temple built as "not really a temple" but more like a barren courtyard?). All in all the designs looked good, but apart from the Shells I just didn't really feel like there was a lot of thought put into making me care about why I'm fighting these enemies, what their purpose were except being there and being murderable and why I wanted to do what I ended up doing. I'd probably put at 7/10 or 8/10 because it does look good, it does play decently and it did entertain me for about 12 hours in total, which is decent for the price asked.
This would of been the only game where prism stones would be useful

Keep up the grind Lightningblade
Much love
Every time I start my ps4 up I check for dlc or updates, I enjoyed this so much I'm gutted there's not more,I'm sure I'm not the only fan that feels like this, please make moooooooore ,we want more.its brilliant!!!
Well wish granted it finally have a dlc
Legit almost crying when you said "bunkum" 😂 haven't heard that phrase used in, I'd say a decade at least, and this reminded me what an amazing phrase it is and that I should use it more 😂😂
Gotta bring back the classics :D
@@SunlightBlade 100% agreed 👏👌
Thank you.
Sadly even with the sensoring the final boss was spoiled for me but I will definitely still play through the whole game great vid
Exactly what I needed during quarantine
I loved the best-friends-forever ending.
love this format! gg man
I loved how good at the banjo you could get. Some of those songs were really cool.
This was great, please consider doing more
Seeing Half sword and Murder strokes was really a treat, definitely fun to recreate the move sets for these weapons in real life
If only he would unscrew and throw the pommel the end his enemy rightly.
CidGuerreiro1234 the hallowed sword has some retractable spikes so I mean I’ll take this as a substitute
@@KirkWilliams300 Based on your comment I knew you'd get the reference. Cheers.
CidGuerreiro1234 yep yep bet same to you, you study HEMA?
First video i watch, 100% genuine meme energy. Subbed.
Claptrap twaddle is my new curse words near children lmao.
I want it to be on steam so i can get acheivements. It feels like if i would do a no shell run and have nothing to show for it, it never happened.
0:50 Nice Terroriser reference, made me laugh several times
I love the game, a bit short and i feeled like it can be done more, but then I think about the number of people in team that develop the game and its price, and I think it was nice. Maybe in the future, if this team make success we will see a more complex mortal Shell with all the stuff lacking in this one title
playing it today. thanks for the review
Like I’m all for swearing and adult/crude humour however to have a breathe with some good jokes and a nice review that isn’t relying on only crude vocabulary!
Hope these guys open a patreon or some other donation website/resource
Have a great day you true blue individual
Wake up babe new lightning blade video
This game really reminds me of a game still not out yet called scorn, from the character design to the creepy ambient music and sound design
really good review! ty sunbro
Have you seen new demons souls remake gameplay? I haven't played it, and im excited. What did you think of it?
Looks great buddy imo just a few minor changes needed but cool as fuck
Very excited!! 😁
I would just like to say that I liked the map design and structure of fallgrim, more than anything in the game. Exploring it, finding all loot and learning the layout while clearing the mobs with starting gear was the most enjoyment I got out of the game. I honestly wish it was bigger.
I do know what you mean, in some ways I really liked it but felt letdown by poor implementation of tunnels and lack of landmarks
the learning more about items as you use them is similar to elder scrolls alchemy. you learn what ingredients do when you consume then.
Came for the review, stayed for the baguette
You should review all the souls games, only just noticed weve never really gotten your opinion on each one yet
For a $29.99 game (or now included on Game Pass) this game far exceeded it's value!! Loved it!!
I think I might pick it up from gamepass I'm a big fan of ds3 but I mostly play mage so is there any magic in it?
@@keymash-aimciamciamalk8630 no real magic but you can upgrade your abilities. The hardening takes some time to get used to cuz it's not like a normal shield, but once you work it into your flow of attacks, you'll feel like a beast!!!.
@@hansolo916 hey as long as its fun lmao I'll probably download it tomorrow then
@@keymash-aimciamciamalk8630 definitely fun, especially if you like the Souls type genre. And since it's on Game Pass, what do you have to lose.. hope they expand this title
Most western game is more focus on graphics. While eastern is more focus on story and progress.
Wow a Hot Fuzz outtake? You Sir are a true man of culture
But hopefully this game does well enough that we can see a sequel with improvements to what they've learned making this game.
annihilation music fits pretty well to this game
Love the editing
The trailer featuring Rotting Christ is what sold me to try Mortal Shell.
Appreciate you blurring the final boss, but even without playing this game ever, I recognized him as the old prisoner.
Good video though!
I love whatever that first couple seconds of opening music was. Sounded like the soundtrack to the lighthouse scene in annihilation
My biggest complaint so far is that all the of the weapons have exactly the same base damage even though the massive 2h sword is slower and heavier it still does the same damage as the starting sword, same with the other 2 weapons.
Its smart in a way, prevents meta and forcing a player to go for damage and instead "what are you comfortable using".
@@oldmatedave2382 although it does create a meta because the faster weapons would have a higher dps making them the ideal pick.
The games was awesome.I cant wait for Mortal Shell 2.Just make it at lease 15 hours long.
Yeah really my only gripe with the game was it's small size. But it really, and I mean really packed a punch for me! 9/10!!!
really awesome review! i need to try this gem now :3
I'm hardening just remembering my playthroughs of this game!!!!
idk bro I managed to get the whole main area map in my head so it wasn't really a maze to me.
That mysterious annihalation track in the beginning always gets to me.
That was an amazing terrorizer sound clip you used 🤣
I'd argue that the bosses were a high point.
The optional Rotting Christ music really improves the bossfights:)
your videos always
get better and better
Thank you thank you, I know I take a little bit longer than others to put out content so i always try my best to make it good! :D
I watched this video with the audio off. Thanks for recording.
I love this game. Need more content in it though because Ive beat it about 4 or 5 times now
I enjoyed the game for what what length it had - it is a nice entry into the genre of "Soulsborne loveletters", although the few environments and what I felt like lack of engaging world building made me like it less than it probably deserves.
I gave it a 4 or 5 out of ten
